        Historia de los hechos del Serenissimo Señor Don Juan de Austria, en el principado de Cataluña. Parte I @[all published].

      Zaragoza, Diego Dormer, 1673. - Elegant woodcut initials and factotums. Large woodcut head- and tailpieces. Engraved portrait, (1 blank, 5 ll.), 458 pp., (1 blank l.). Folio, contemporary vellum, originally limp (board stiffeners, new endpapers and leather ties recently added), spine gilt, text-block edges sprinkled red. Browning to a few leaves, a few early marginalia. A crisp, wide-margined copy, in fine to very fine condition. Stamp of the Casa de Cadaval in blank portion of title. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this extremely detailed account of D. Juan of Austria's campaign in Catalonia to 1652, with information not only on military maneuvers but on debates over strategy and tactics. It includes transcriptions of many letters and documents plus a summary of events from early 1640, when Catalonia first revolted. The promised second part, which would have included Mortara's actions, never appeared.D. Juan of Austria, illegitimate son of King Philip IV, was sent to Catalonia in mid-1651 to oust the French. After Barcelona surrendered in October 1652, the French were left with only frontier outposts in Catalonia; but in the meantime, Portugal had seized her chance to secede, and military efforts on these two fronts had a disastrous effect on Spain. D. Juan of Austria was defeated by Schomberg at the battle of Ameixial in 1663, and led the 1677 @golpe de estado that wrenched power out of the hands of Valenzuela, favorite of D. Carlos II.The author served for twelve years as D. Juan's secretary. He also published a massive 5-volume work on the Turkish wars, Madrid 1684-1690.@Provenance: Next to the royal family, the Dukes of Cadaval are the most distinguished in Portugal, with close ties to the ruling Bragança family; they trace their lineage back to D.         Il giornale de Letterati per tutto l'anno 1673

      Nicolò Angelo Tinassi, Roma 1673 - In 8° - pp.176 - Senza legatura - 12 riviste mensili rilegate insieme - Capilettera, testatine e finalini.

      Frontis. containing a scene of a library (outer margin carefully strengthened on verso). L (incl. the frontis.), [10], 336, 387-733 pp. 12mo, cont. vellum over boards. Bologna: Manolessi, 1673. First edition of the very rare catalogue of the books donated by Aprosio to the library which was to bear his name. "Angelo Aprosio of Ventimiglia was in correspondence with most of the learned men of his day, and they sent him many books to read. Aprosio's catalogue of 1673 is a small duodecimo list of these gifts in alphabetical order of the donors' names. The purpose of such a fantastic method of arrangement was presumably to attract more gifts; but the printed catalogue goes no further than the letter C...This catalogue became celebrated as a picture of the learned world in Aprosio's day, and it was translated into Latin by J.C. Wolf at Hamburg in 1734."Pollard & Ehrman, pp. 262-63. Very good copy of an extremely rare book. Brunet, I, 325"Ouvrage rare." Grolier Club, Bibliography, 67"Although the work ends with the letter C, and remained incomplete, the large number of entries makes it one of the earliest and most comprehensive select bibliographies of Italian literature. It enjoyed great popularity among scholars as a reference work." Peignot, p. 77"fort rare." Taylor, Book Catalogues, pp. 5-6, 105, 110, 144, 181, & 207. .

        Articuli Pacis et Confoederationis inter serenissimum Lusitaniae Regem ab una, & celsos ac praepotentes Foederati Belgii ordines ab altera parta conclusae

      Brazil and the African dominions go to Portugal, whilst the Far East and South East Asia colonies go to the Dutch. 1673. Hague. Hillebrandt van Wouw. In 4to (197 mm x 154 mm). 12 ff. Unbound. Excellent copy.First edition. The Dutch-Portuguese War was an armed conflict involving Dutch forces in the form of the Dutch East India Company and the Dutch West India Company, against the Portuguese (1602 ?" 1663). During the conflict, Salvador de Bahia for instance, would change hands back and forth twice; raids and acts of privateering were common as well. The result of the war was that Portugal won in South America (Dutch Brazil) and Africa (Angola and São Tomé), and the Dutch were the victors in the Far East and South Asia. The war was concluded in 1661, and the terms were settled with this treatise; it´s importance for both the West and East Indies was considerable, and translations soon were prepared. The result of the treatise shaped the future of Asian and American colonies for about a century, with remnants of their colonization present to-date in architecture, language, etc. "This treaty between Portugal and the States General relates to Brazil" (Sabin).Rare, no copies have appeared at auction in the last 30 years.Sabin 2154b. Muy buen estado, encuadernación con alguna perdida principalmente en el lomo. Marius Mercator o Mario Mercátor. Teólogo romano del s. V, m. después del 431. No llegó nunca al sacerdocio. Probablemente desde Roma, envía (418) a san Agustín dos de sus obras contra los pelagianos para que le diese su parecer. En el 429 se encuentra en Constantinopla para dar a conocer al Oriente lo esencial de la herejía pelagiana y a Occidente la herejía de Nestorio. Aquí se dedica a refutar nestorianos y pelagianos a la vez que traduce al latín buen número de obras y autores, tales como Teodoro de Mopsuestia, Nestorio y Cirilo de Alejandría. Como teólogo tiene poca originalidad; como antipelagiano depende de san Agustín y como antinestoriano de san Cirilo de Alejandría.

      MATTEO CADORINI, PADOVA 1673 - Legatura originale in piena pergamena, titolo e fregio manoscritti al dorso, tagli azzurri, note manoscritte al contropiatto anteriore e alla carta di guardia: bella antiporta con stemma araldico inciso a piena pagina; frontespizio con titolo e fregio tipografico, timbro di biblioteca estinta; 30 pagine non numerate per dediche, indici ed epigrammi, con numerosi fregi silografati; Un bel ritratto dell'autore inciso e fuori testo; (in totale 18 carte); 328 pagine numerate con testatine e capolettera nel testo; da pagina 1 a pagina 203 tratta la storia civile di Ascoli divisa in quattro libri; da pagina 203 all'ultima, il Liber Unicus, (il quinto, secondo Farsetti), che tratta della storia ecclesiastica della città, le ultime due carte sono dedicate a una Mantissa ad Historiarum Asculanam e a dei versi. Il testo, suddiviso in quattro libri, rappresenta la sua opera maggiore. Fu lasciato dallo scrittore senza una completa revisione a causa della sua prematura scomparsa. Cercarono di completarlo e correggerlo i nipoti materni, i quali dichiararono apertamente di non sentire di avere l'adeguata preparazione. Il Liber Primus tratta delle Antiquitates. In questo volume l'autore riporta la descrizione della morfologia del territorio di Ascoli, le origini storiche della città, aggiungendo riferimenti alle leggende tramandate sulla sua fondazione, notizie sull'allargamento territoriale del Piceno, l'interpretazione ed il possibile significato da attribuire allo stemma municipale, gli usi e costumi degli ascolani, le divinità adorate in città ed il culto particolare per Ancaria , oltre all'origine del toponimo. Nel Liber Secundus riferisce la storia di Ascoli includendo il periodo preromano e romano arrivando fino a quello della guerra sociale. Nel Liber Tertius tratta della guerra dei socii italici contro la città di Roma coprendo l'arco di tempo compreso tra il 90 e l'88 a.C. Il testo contiene, inoltre, notizie della storia patria fino all'anno 1426 . Nella stesura l'autore riserva un particolare risalto alle figure di Gaio Vidacilio, valoroso condottiero ascolano che si uccise alla presenza dei suoi concittadini per onore, e di Publio Ventidio Basso Nel Liber Quartus raccoglie le testimonianze sulla storia delle personalità ascolane più illustri. Lo storico le elenca con sistematicità e le suddivide secondo categorie di appartenenza, come: santi, beati, vescovi, giureconsulti, letterati, medici, scienziati e militari. In questo volume è stato dedicato ampio spazio al primo vescovo di Ascoli sant'Emidio e ad altri esponenti consacrati a vita religiosa, tra i quali i più noti sono: il beato Corrado, papa Niccolò IV, san Giacomo della Marca. (Wikipedia). Rarissima prima edizione non adulterata. Piantanida: " E' la più importante storia di Ascoli e tra le più caratteristiche edizioni di questo genere che siano state stampate nel secolo XVII. Quasi tutti gli esemplari furono adulterati. Il Manzoni P.2°, pp. 105-105, scrive: .Il Marcucci nota che gli esemplari di questa storia non adulterati sono di estrema rarità, poichè bollendo nella città le fazioni sulla nobiltà del Consolato e delle Preture, ottenne quest'ultima dai nipoti dell'autore di sopprimere e adulterare tutti gli esemplari che si fossero potuti ritirare; quindi in gran parte di essi mancano le carte 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 195, 196, 197 e 198 che furono ristampate con cambiamenti in Ascoli con carta più grossa." L'esemplare in esame non risulta adulterato in nessuna parte, sfuggendo con evidenza alla censura. Tanto il Manzoni che il Lozzi (189), giudicarono "rarissima" questa edizione anche quando adulterata. Le opere dell'autore sono da sempre apprezzate ed accreditate come solida fonte di riferimento per la conoscenza delle vicissitudini cittadine, spesso corredate anche da numerose citazioni epigrafiche. Menzionato tra i più illustri scrittori nazionali dal Mazzucchelli e dal Tiraboschi. Esemplare in discrete condizioni conservative [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        THE WORKS OF FRANCIS OSBORN Esq;

      London, printed for R. D. and are to be sold by Allen Bancks, 1673.. London, printed for R. D. and are to be sold by Allen Bancks, 1673.. Divine, Moral, Historical, Political. In Four several Tracts. Viz. 1. Advice to a Son, in two Parts. 2. Political Reflections on the Government of the Turks, &c. 3. Memoires on Q. Elizabeth and K. James. 4. A Miscellany of Essays, Paradoxes, Problematical Discourses, Letters, Characters, &c. This is the first collected edition of Osborn's works, despite the general title page which states 'seventh edition', each part has separate title page dated 1673, except "Advice to a son. The second part." which is dated 1672; pagination and register are continuous. Small 8vo, approximately 180 x 110 mm, 7 x 4¼ inches, pages: [12], 127, [17], 145-250, [12], 263-408, [18], 409-466, [16], 467-547, [25], 549-602, 503-566, 667-695, 694-695, [1], irregular pagination in final section is common to all copies, bound in modern quarter calf over marbled sides, raised bands, blind rules and gilt lettering to spine, old marbling to edges. Title page dusty and slightly worn at fore-edge with a couple of tiny chips, name on blank reverse of 2nd title page, some page edges lightly browned, small ink blot on 1 page with loss of 6 letters, occasional small pale stain, 2 lower margin corners missing, small chip to 1 margin. Binding tight and firm. A very good copy. Francis Osborn (1593-1659), was born to a Royalist Bedfordshire clan but after the outbreak of the Civil War he broke with his family's politics and was granted several offices by the Long Parliament. His brother-in-law, William Draper, served as a parliamentary colonel and as a Visitor to Oxford University. Osborne himself moved to Oxford in 1650 and launched a career as an essayist and political theorist. His aphoristic advice book, "Advice to a Son" (1656) proved one of the most popular of the age, going into 5 editions in two years despite the misogynist passages. Osborn supported the Interregnum regimes and served the Commonwealth as a minor official. Between 1651 and his death in 1659 he also lived for a time in London where he got to know Thomas Hobbes. John Aubrey rated him as a 'great acquaintance' of Hobbes. Osborn, as a defender of the new learning and a humanist wit devoted to the likes of Bacon and Machiavelli, was precisely the sort to provide Hobbes with his 'learned conversation'. The essay on the government of the Turks is followed by brief 'discourses' on Machiavelli, Luther, the King of Sweden's descent into Germany, the death of Nero and other historical subjects. Osborn's collected works were reprinted in 1682, 1689, 1700, 1701 and 1722 but first editions are scarce. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. POSTAGE AT COST.

        Der von Christi Geburt an, biß auf diese unsere Zeit, regierenden Könige in Schweden Leben, Regierung, und Absterben, aus den bewehrtesten Schwedischen Geschicht-Schreibern hervor gesucht und zusammen getragen, auch mit ihren wahrhaftigen Bildnüssen, so viel deren zu bekommen gewesen, gezieret von Joh.

      Christoff Beern. Nürnberg, Johann Hoffmann, 1673. 8:o. Grav. extra titel,+ (10),+ 658 s.+ 52 grav. porträtt,+ 1 utvikbar grav. plansch. Enstaka småfläckar. Samtida pergamentband. Ur Axel Widstrands bibliotek, med hans exlibris. Det extra titelbladet eventuellt isatt från annat exemplar. Warmholtz 2520 för 1675-års upplaga. Fint exemplar av första upplagan av detta populära arbete, som trycktes om flera gånger, ännu in på 1700-talet. Johann Christopher Beer (1638-1712) från Nürnberg skrev även motsvarande arbeten om kungarna i Frankrike och Spanien. Publikens förtjusning över boken delades dock inte av Warmholtz som ansåg att den ej förtjänade nya upplagor och inte heller att porträtten ökade dess värde. Beer följde inte helt den gängse samtida svenska kungalängden utan börjar "först" med Erik, (som traditionellt kommer efter Magogs son Gog) och hans första porträtt föreställer Bräntemunder (Brautamundus). Den utvikbara planschen visar Karl XI:s kröning 1672

        Rare 17th century mezzotint portrait engraving before letters

      . 164 x 112 mm. Half-length, within an oval border. The composer is depicted holding a heavy chain in one hand from which hangs a medal, possibly denoting an honor received. With early manuscript annotation to mount. Without text within oval border to portrait or to area below portrait as is present in later issues; laid down to early mount.. This first state of the print is very rare. Diepenbroick-Grüter 23086, 1/11. C.P.E. Bach Portrait Collection I catalogue, p. 168, plate 244 (a later issue, with letters). "Schmelzer is historically significant in two areas: as the major Austrian composer of instrumental music before Biber he influenced the development of the suite as well as the sonata in Austria and south Germany; and his appointment as the first Austrian Kapellmeister at the Habsburg court in the 17th century initiated the ever increasing reliance on native rather than imported talent that was most evident in the first half of the 18th century." Rudolf Schnitzler in Grove online Schmelzer was given the honorary title of "von Ehrenruef" by the Emperor in 1673.
