Io. Baptistae Pignae Carminum lib. quatuor, ad Alphonsum Ferrariae Principem. His adiunximus Caelii Calcagnini Carm. lib. III. Ludovici Areosti Carm. lib. II

In 8vo (cm 16); legatura del XVII secolo in piena pelle, taglio marmorizzato (dorso rifatto); pp. 312, (16). Marca tipografica al titolo. Ex - libris B.A. Chassagne. Q. Breen, Celio Calcagnini (1479 - 1541), in: "Church History", vol. 21, nr. 3, settembre 1952, pp. 225 - 238). Folio (373 × 253 mm). First edition, with an appealing near-contemporary French provenance: bookplate and ownership inscription of Hieronimus (Jérôme) Beausire. The Beausires were a famous French architectural dynasty - our Beausire may be Jérôme (1708-1761) architect and son of Jean Beausire, chief of public works in Paris under the Sun King and Louis XV. "The draughtsman and engraver Grégoire Huret (1610-1670) - an academician who was also close to the king - took over Bosse's lectures at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. In 1670, Huret published Optique de portraiture et peinture (Optics of portraying and painting) in which he expressed great concern about the state of the art, particularly criticising Bosse's book from 1665 [On the practices of geometrical planes and perspectives] and previous publications... Huret claimed that his book should be seen as a contribution to the education of the young, especially to teaching them useful rules for drawing perspective... Huret was well read and discussed books on other subjects than perspective. Naturally enough these included general works on painting, but also Desargues's and Pascal's works on projective geometry... Among the more productive passages in Huret's book one can find a presentation of the construction and use of an angle scale. He also dealt with a point most authors avoided, namely the use of scaled lengths in perspective constructions. In this connection he presented the technique for applying a reduced distance in a distance point construction - without reducing the actual distance - that 'sGravesande applied later" (Andersen, the Geometry of an Art: the History of the Mathematical Theory of Perspective from Alberti to Monge, 2007, pp. 465-66).

Hinderlassenes Denckmal Neapolitanischer Unruhe Deß Verstorbenen Hertzogs von Guise. Von Ihm selber in Frantzösischer Sprach auffgerichtet. 2 Bl., 1040 S. Mit gestoch. Frontispiz. 12°. Pergamentbd d. Z. (oberes Kapital ergänzt) mit handschriftl. Rückentitel.

Frankfurt, Joh. Georg Schiele, 1670. - Seltene erste deutsche Ausgabe. – Gestoch. Exlibris von Breitenbauch. Etwas gebräunt. Seit über 35 Jahren nicht im JAP. – VD17 3:300465N. Nicht bei Fromm. [Attributes: First Edition]

Winters regarded Greville as a poet who 'should be ranked with Jonson as one of the two great masters of the short poem in the Renaissance'" (ODNB).Sound and attractive copy of this collection of the subversive verse treatises of Fulke Greville (1554-1628), courtier and author, and friend and champion of Sir Philip Sidney.         THE COUNTER-SCUFFLE. WHEREUNTO IS ADDED THE COUNTER-RAT WRITTEN BY R.S

London: Printed By J.C. For Andrew Crook, 1670. Rebacked over earlier marbled boards. Notes in an old hand on front pastedown regarding research of the book. Title-page has been repaired quite some time ago with 1" chip from the free edge. Title-page vignette and full-page illustration preceding the "Counter-Rat". Edges were trimmed at some point long ago with loss of a few headliners. (See photos). It employs octosyllabic triplets with intermittent trisyllabic lines and numerous doggerel tricks. The story of a food fight during Lent supper in the Wood Street Counter or Compter (a debtors' prison in London) related in a raucous mock-heroic style. See Raylor, "Cavaliers, Clubs, and Literary Culture", pp.126-27, 1994. Also cited in Wing S 4895. A scarce piece of 18th century English printing. . Later Edition. Half Brown Calf.         Tracts . The Cosmicall Qualities of things. Cosmicall Supititions. The Temperature of the Subterraneall Regions. The Temperature of the Submarine Regions. The Bottom of the Sea. To which is Præfixt, An Introduction to the History of Particular Qualities.

Oxford: Printed by W.H. for Ric. Davis 1670 - FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, without the blank H8 as usual, last gathering in Subterraneall Regions somewhat soiled and the last 2 leaves with clean tears across the text, the latter laid down, some damp-staining, oddly distributed, pp. [v], 42, [ii], 27, 28, [i, longitudinal title], 43, [iv], 21, [i], 16,[bound with:] Boyle (Robert) Tracts Consisting of Observations About the Saltness of the Sea . London: Printed by E. Flesher for R. Davis, Bookseller in Oxford, 1674 (1673). FIRST EDITION, bit of marginal worming at the end just touching 3 letters, and some damp-staining at the end, pp. [v], 51, [i], 6, [i], 5, [ii], 11, [ii], 39, [ii], 5, [ii], 11, [i], 27, [ii], 14, 8vo, contemporary panelled calf, rebacked, preserving original spine, sound The volume is usually known by the title of the first listed tract, the Cosmicall Qualities, but the ‘Præfixt’ tract is the most important, ‘considerably in advance of . The Sceptical Chymist [and] Formes and Qualities and it may well be looked upon as one of the important milestones in the history of the theories of chemical combination’ (Fulton). Elsewhere Boyle is in humourous vein, and he also reports on the invention of a submarine by an unnamed Swede.‘In discussing the submarine regions, Boyle notes that there have been no experiments, and very little written, on the subject. He states that his information comes from those who have dived both with and without apparatus.‘He says he questioned closely a man who earned his living by diving, and whose apparatus Boyle describes elsewhere, and whose exploits in Sweden and off an island in another location were recounted elsewhere. This man [Rochford?] recounted that the water became considerably colder the deeper he went. Another person confirmed that the same was true in North America, and another in Africa.‘To contest the argument that water has no gravity on itself, he performed the experiment of lowering a glass into water with the mouth down, and observing the height to which the water rose, a result confirmed by two divers who had dived in a bell in northern seas and off Africa.‘He notes that a diver recounted to him how the sea can be affected by strong winds at the surface, but not at the bottom’ (Nigel Phillips, forthcoming bibliography of diving). On Saltness of the Sea Fulton remarks: ‘none of [Boyle’s] works illustrates his versatility of mind more strikingly.’ (I. Fulton 83, citing the 1670 title-page as a variant rather than as the first issue, as demonstrated by Madan; Madan 2851; ESTC R29050. II. Fulton 113; Madan 3005, a ‘very untidy book’; ESTC R17503)

Trevigi, Padova & Bassano: [ca. 1670]. 12mo (156 x 80 mm) 72 pp. Title woodcut vignette of a plump hand holding a flower. Quarter olive calf and green marbled paper boards, untrimmed; upper joint repaired.*** Zingharesche were traditional gypsy songs, assembled for recitation at carnivals. The form enjoyed a literary vogue in the seventeenth century. True to the genre, this collection consists principally of love poems, but includes as well a poem predicting the future ("cingaresca astrologica"), based on reading the lines of the hand (hence the title cut). All editions are rare; the earliest cited is 1611. Of the present edition ICCU lists one copy (Padua); there are also copies at the BSB and at Harvard; the latter appears to be the only copy of any edition in a US library. Cf. Black, Gypsy Bibliography (1914), p. 173 (1611 edition).

The monies exchanged amounted to considerable sums and the network of trade extended throughout Italy. Variants of the names Vitta and Vitta di Vitta (e.g., Vitta della Vida), appear in accounts of Jewish inhabitants of Mantua and Ferrara in the 18th century (cf. Urbani & Zazzu, The Jews of Genoa, II, p. 925, items 1975 & 1976, documents from the 1770s mentioning several members of the Della Vida or Vitta family residing in Mantua and Ferrara). References to Ferrarese places, institutions and names support the localization of this manuscript to Ferrara: among the creditors are a Ferrarese institution, the Ospedale de Battubianchi (f. 72, i.e., the Ospedale dei Battuti Bianchi), the Marchese Franc. Estensi, one Beccaria di Quartesano (a neighborhood of Ferrara) and so on. Entities or individuals from other cities are so identified, for example on fol. 53 is a list of transactions with various individuals including Pietro Cattan di Bologna and Sinibaldi di Roma. Early modern account books by Jewish merchants or moneylenders seldom appear on the market. This is a fine example, in a typical and handsome stationery binding.

PRODROMO ovvero saggio di alcune inventioni nuove premesso all?Arte Maestra.

With 19 wide margin copper engravings etched by Israel Silvestre. Period grey paper wrappers with a brown ink note in Italian on top of the front wrapper. Wrappers slightly soiled and creased, plates slightly age toned, but overall a very good collection of bright sound engravings. This beautiful collection of engraved views of French palaces, mansions and gardens from the time of Louis XIV was published by Nicolas Langlois in the series of "Veues des Plus Beaux Lieux de France et d'Italie & Les Places, Portes, Fontaines de Paris & Veue de Rome et des Environs" (Paris, ca. 1670-1680, ca. 251 plates). Our plates assembled together under period paper wrappers include views of the Palais-Royal in Paris, palaces and parks in Chaville and Meudon (both near Paris), Liencourt (Nord-Pas de Calais), Conflans-sur-Seine (north-eastern France); Château de Clagny (near Versailles), Colbert's house in Sceaux (Bourg-la-Reine near Paris), Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte (Seine-et-Marne), Château d'Ancy-le-Franc (Burgundy), Château de Madrid (Bois de Boulogne) and Château de Richelieu (Touraine). "An extensive series of engravings depicting the major French chateaux and gardens, including Versailles and Fountainebleau, and Parisian views and architectural landmarks. It appears to have been issued by Mariette and N. De Poilly, in addition to Langlois" (Christies). "Gabriel Perelle was a French draftsman and printmaker of topographic views and landscapes. A pupil of Simon Vouet, Perelle specialized in classical landscapes not dissimilar to those of Francisque Millet, although more obviously decorative. He founded an etching workshop, and his sons Nicolas and Adam assisted him. Perelle was also a pupil of Daniel Rabel and produced several hundred engravings both from his own drawings and from those of his competitors Israël Silvestre, Paul Bril, Jacques Callot, Michel Corneille the Elder, Pierre Asselin, Jacques Fouquières, Corneille Poëlembourg, and Sébastien Pontault de Beaulieu. These engravings in the etching and intaglio mainly depict landscapes of the Paris region, including views of castles, where he introduced the variety by adding ruins and various accessories" (Wikipedia). Titel, gestoch. Titelvignette und 29 ganzseit. Textkupfern. Ohne den Kupfertitel. Pergamentbd d. Z. (etwas fleckig, oberes Kapital mit kurzem Einriss) mit handschriftl. Rückentitel.

Amsterdam, Kristian von Hagen, 1670.. . Jahrhunderts" (Wolfskehl in Slg Manheimer). - Exlibris.         LETTERA DI FRANCESCO REDI GENTILUOMO ARETINO, SOPRA ALCUNE OPPOSIZIONI FATTE ALLE SUE OSSERVAZIONI INTORNO ALLE VIPERE. Scritta alli Signori Bourdelot, Sig. di Condè e di S.Leger e Alessandro Moro.

Nella Stamperia della Stella 1670 Prima edizione. Cm.24,3x17. Pg.48.
