Arnoldus Montanus
Amsterdam: 1669. If the goods are shipped to countries outside the European Union, the recipient bears the transport risk. Ich bin privater Anbieter. Daher ist Garantie, Rüc … [Click Below for Full Description]

LOWER, Richard
Londini: Typis Jo. Redmayne impensis Jacobi Allestry, 1669. 8vo, 8 leaves, pp. 220, (20), 7 folding engraved plates. Complete with the initial blank A1. Contemporary French speckled calf, gilt arms on sides (see below), very neatly rebacked preserving the original spine. FIRST EDITION, second issue (see below) of "the most important contribution to circulatory physiology after William Harvey's De motu cordis, published three years before Lower's birth. Nobel Laureate André Cournand considered Lower's book to be one of the most important texts in the history of physiology because of the nature of its observations, the rigor of its experimental design and demonstrations, and its simple and convincing form of presentation... "Lower entered medical practice in London in 1666 and continued experiments he had begun in Oxford on the motion and color of the blood and on transfusion. His observations on these subjects were summarized in Tractatus de corde. "Lower made important observations on the structure of cardiac muscle, the quantity of blood in the vascular system, the velocity of blood flow, and the effects of aeration of blood as it passed through the lungs. He was impressed by the complex arrangement of muscular fibers in the heart and felt their unique arrangement was responsible for the contraction of the ventricular cavities in systole that propelled blood into the vascular system. In a series of experiments performed with Robert Hooke, Lower showed that the red color of arterial blood was due to its contact with 'fresh air' in the lungs. His book also contained observat … [Click Below for Full Description]

LA MOTHE LE VAYER (François de)]
Paris, Louis Billaine, 1669. [Click Below for Full Description]

Rare edition of the collected works of Luis de Camões, including Os Lusiadas and three Rimas. In the same year, Antonio Craesbeeck published another edition with the same title but with less content and with a different frontispiece. This collection of works is made up of separate publications.Os Lusiadas is the great epic poem of Portuguese exploration, in the original Portuguese, a monument of Portuguese literature that gave a Homeric aura to Renaissance voyages of discovery and colonial conquests, here together with the other works of Camões. Camões's work was first published in Portuguese at Lisbon in 1572. In the early 1530s the great Portuguese historian, João de Barros, most famous for his Decadas de Asia, had called for an epic poem of Portuguese exploration and discovery. Luis de Camões (1524-1580) answered that call four decades later. Camões was educated in a monastic school in Coimbra, and produced poetry and plays at an early age. In his early twenties he was banished from Lisbon after producing a play considered disparagi … [Click Below for Full Description]

VISSCHER, Roemer.
With engraved emblematic title-page, an emblem on the back of A5, and 193 engraved emblems by Claes Jansz. Visscher, in text. With 2 engraved emblems pasted on first blanks (including a repeat of the emblem on A5). Contemporary vellum, green ties. [10], 196, [4] leaves. Third edition of a popular and witty Dutch emblem book written by Roemer Visscher (1547-1620). The work consists of three series of 60 emblems, each with a motto in Latin or Dutch, a two-line verse below, and a short explanation on the facing page. The emblems are typical for the Dutch engraver Claes Jansz. Visscher (1586-1652): instead of the usual mythological iconography of traditional emblems, Visscher takes simple objects or subjects from daily life and sets them in their natural environment, in a city house or in the country, and with a perfectly chosen arrangement or action he directly comes to his point in a clear, yet entertaining way. Visscher's work was epoch-making: he was one of the first artists to depict the typical, natural Dutch landscape, breaking with older conventional images. With armorial bookplate on paste-down. Slightly browned, but otherwise in very good condition. Binding also very good, ties only slightly frayed. Landwehr, Emblem and fable books 874; De Vries, Emblemata 56; cf. Praz 530 (first edition).

Several new chapters have also been added, on the pricing of diamonds according to size and quality, on the pricing of pearls, two chapters on alchemy and tables of the fineness of silver and gold. This material, not included in the 1661 edition gives the present second edition its greater value: "In terms of substance, this [second] edition is considerably superior to the first; both are rare" (Sinkankas). With a … [Click Below for Full Description]

RUSSIA. Miege, Guy (bap. 1644 – d. ca. 1718)
London: printed for John Starkey, 1669. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION (A French-language version appeared at Amsterdam in the same year.). Octavo:. Bound in contemporary polished calf, rebacked preserving original spine, corners bumped, light wear. Complete with the two engraved portraits of Charles Howard, First Earl of Carlisle (1628–1685) and Tzar Aleksey Mikhaylovich (1629-1676), just shaved at fore-edge. Title a little dusty, clean tear to margin of Z1 (not entering the text). Fine. First edition of this eyewitness account of the official English embassy to Russia, written by Guy Miege, under-secretary to the English ambassador Charles Howard, earl of Carlisle. The book provides a fascinating window on the intricacies of Russian diplomatic protocols, ceremonial customs, and the hospitality bestowed upon high-ranking foreign dignitaries at the Russian court."Carlisle's main responsibilities were to reciprocate the honor that Tzar Aleksey Mikhaylovich had shown to King Charles II in sending his diplomats to London, as well as to build the promising momentum in their relationship by negotiating the trade privileges that the English hoped to restore. It can safely be concluded that Carlisle's diplomatic mission resulted in a great failure. Ceremonial disputes and diverging economic interests precipitated a decline in Anglo-Russian relations and left the two monarchies in a state of mutual resentment."(Hennings)Guy Miege obtained appointment as under-secretary to Charles Howard, earl of Carlisle, in his embassy to Muscovy, Sweden, and Denmark, and in July 1663 joined an entourag … [Click Below for Full Description]

With an engraved portrait of Anne Marie Louise d'Orleans facing the dedication. Contemporary gold-tooled, mottled calf. [8], 152 pp. Second, enlarged edition of a rare work on precious stones and pearls found in what the title calls the East and West Indies (but including the Gulf region). It is most important for the author's new information on diamonds, pearls and pearl fishing, this last with considerable detail on the various pearl fishing sites in the Gulf. The extensive chapter devoted to pearls and pearl fishing notes the Persian Gulf as the most important source and names specific sites: "on pesche les perles en divers endroits du monde. (p. 68). The present second edition includes an entirely new 17-page appendix on the history of the Spanish conquest in the New World with further remarks on pearl fisheries, natural history and trade.

The "Mensa Isiaca" was a bronze table with Egyptian inscriptions of probable Roman workmanship also called "Tavola Bembina" from its first owner, Pietro Bembo. Discovered among the ruins of the temple of Isis in Rome in 1525, or perhaps in 1527, it became one of the best known Egyptian artifacts of the time, it came to by owned by Cardinal Bembo, who allowed Pignoria to examine it. This famous artifact was the subject of many studies: in addition to the Pignoria one, Kircher also tried to decipher the hieroglyphs. The 11 folded plates, created by Giacomo Franco, retaking those engraved by Enea Vico in 1559, together make up the entire Isis Table … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Glauber, Johann Rudolph.
Amsterdam Janssonius, 1669. (15 x 9 cm). 60 (4w) S. Rückenbroschur in moderner Leinwand-Kassette. Einzige Ausgabe. - Stellenweise leicht stockfleckig bzw. gebräunt, sonst wohlerhalten. - VD17 1:641041W; Gugel 28; Dünnhaupt 31; Duveen 259; Rosenthal BMP 368; Neu 1653; Krivatsy 4778; Brüning 2196 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Skinner's Case, the name usually given to the celebrated dispute between the House of Lords and the House of Commons in the Parliament of the United Kingdom over the question of the original jurisdiction of the former house in civil suits. In 1668, a London merchant named Thomas Skinner presented a petition to Charles II asserting that he could not obtain any redress against the East India Company, which, he asserted, had injured his property. The case was referred to the House of Lords, and Skinner obtained a verdict for £5,000. The company complained to the House of Commons which declared that the proceedings in the other House were illegal. The Lords defended their action, and after two conferences between the Houses had produced no result the Commons ordered Skinner to be put in prison on a charge of breach of privilege; to this the Lords replied by fining and imprisoning Sir Samuel Barnardiston, the chairman of the company. Pièce de titre de basane brune mouchetée. Une fente en tête. Une tache blanche en queue. Frottements. Bon exemplaire. [Click Below for Full Description]

HOLLAR, WENCESLAUS
Rare depiction of the Battle Against Pirates off Cadiz [London, c.1669], 375 by 420mm (14.75 by 16.5 inches). Description Engraving and etching, list of ships upper left, letterpress text below. Hollar was on board the Mary Rose and this engraving is an eyewitness account. The battle of Cádiz of 1669, was a naval engagement fought 18 19 December 1669 [in the waters near Cádiz between the English fourth-rate frigate Mary Rose under the command of Rear-Admiral John Kempthorne, escorting several merchantmen, and a group of seven pirate ships operating out of Algiers. The incident was recorded and drawn by the engraver Wenceslaus Hollar, with an engraving appearing in John Ogilby s Africa. On a calm sea six pirate ships in line are passing to windward of the two English warships and firing broadsides in turn. The English ships are protecting three merchantmen to leeward. In the lower left corner a French ship is sailing away, and on the horizon another pirate vessel pursues a solitary merchantman . Hollar, who reportedly sat on deck of the Mary Rose sketching during the action, later produced this etching of the battle. The picture shows the Algerine line engaging the Mary Rose and the Roe, while Rose Leaf chases King David to the southeast, the French merchantman escapes to the northwest, and the other merchantmen shelter behind the Mary Rose. Willem van de Velde s oil painting based on Hollar s etching of the Mary Rose engagement is in the Royal Collection, where it has been held at least since 1687, and is currently (2013) on public display in the Queen s Private Dining Room … [Click Below for Full Description]

The book is complete except for the blank leaf that precedes the title page and leaf U8 which contains six short verses from the Progress of the Soule. A very thin stub of this leaf is visible in the gutter of the book. A little toning to early pages but a clean and attractive copy of an important work overall. The 1669 edition of Donne's poems which begins with his son's preface, signed 'John Donne' is the most complete seventeenth century printing of Donne's poems. It begins with Donne's great early erotic poems from the 'Songs and Sonnets' followed by his Elegies and Satires. It is always a thrill to encounter Donne's verse in an early edition of this kind if for no other reason … [Click Below for Full Description]
