It was reprinted again in 1673. La Fontaine's CONTES ET NOUVELLES EN VERS were published in successive editions, with additions, from 1664 through 1674, and consist of "tales drawn from Ariosto, Boccaccio, Machiavelli, and other sources, mostly light licentious tales . devoid of serious thought, told with grace and charm. They have been gravely censured on the score of immorality, but they did not offend contemporary readers . La Fontaine, when converted in his old age, made a public disavowal of the CONTES" - OCFL. This printing, as well as that of the preceding year, are institutionally rare, with two locations of this printing in OCLC: at Princeton and at the Morgan Library. TCHEMERZINE VI:372.         Paradise Lost

This one of the original 1,200 first edition copies printed in 1667 by the publisher Simmons. Simmons issued the first edition over a few years, adding a different title page from time to time. By the time the 1200 copies of the first run had sold out, seven different variations of the title page has been produced, bearing dates of 1667, 1668 and 1669. There is no known relationship between when a given copy of the TEXT itself was printed, and the title page it bears. Thus, the first printed copy of the 1200 copies could just as easily have a 1669 title page as one dated 1667 or 1668. It was just a matter of what copy the publisher pulled out of the original pile, and attached a title page. In addition, the bibliographer Hugh Amory argued convincingly that the 1668 title page was probably issued earlier than the one bearing the date 1667. In this case the title page bears the full name of the author and the year 1669. In addition, this copy includes the important preliminary matter that Milton added during 1668 after the first copies were issued. These include "The Argument," in which Milton describes the program of each of the ten books, and "The Verse," in which Milton defends his choice of using blank verse rather than rhyme. Very good condition, in leather binding and gold gilt-edged pages, housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase.

1669. London, 1669. 3rd ed. London, 1669. 3rd ed. Early Edition of Coke's Second Institutes: Includes Coke's Landmark Commentary on Magna Carta Coke, Sir Edward [1552-1634]. The Second Part of the Institutes of the Lawes of England. Containing the Exposition of Many Ancient, And Other Statutes; Whereof You May See the Particulars in a Table Following. London: Printed for A. Crooke, W. Leake, A. Roper, [et al.], 1669. [x], 745, [41] pp. Folio (11-3/4" x 7-1/2"). Contemporary paneled calf, raised bands to spine, early repairs to front board, later repair to foot of spine. A few minor nicks and scuffs to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, a few minor chips to board edges, corners bumped, hinges mended. Light toning to text, occasional (very) faint dampstaining to lower margins, edgewear and light soiling to title page. A handsome copy. $850. * Second edition. The Second Part of the Institutes, an exposition of "many ancient and other statutes" including Magna Carta, was published by order of the House of Commons after the author's death. It is a landmark work because it offered a novel interpretation of Magna Carta. Reflecting contemporary struggles between the king and Parliament, Coke presented the charter as the ancient constitution of England, one that established the fundamental rights of Englishmen and placed royal power under the laws of the land. Perhaps the most famous section is Coke's commentary on the 29th chapter, in which he traced the origins of trial by jury and the right of habeas corpus. English Short-Title Catalogue R30266.

Amsterdam Janssonius 1669 - (15 x 9 cm). 60 (4w) S. Rückenbroschur in moderner Leinwand-Kassette. Einzige Ausgabe. - Stellenweise leicht stockfleckig bzw. gebräunt, sonst wohlerhalten. - VD17 1:641041W; Gugel 28; Dünnhaupt 31; Duveen 259; Rosenthal BMP 368; Neu 1653; Krivatsy 4778; Brüning 2196 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Sthlm, I. Meurer, 1669. 8:o. Extra grav. titelblad,(27,1 blank),112,(2) s. & 1 stor utvikbar grav. plansch.
