1667. A true and faithful account of the several informations exhibited to the honourable committee appointed by the Parliament to inquire into the late dreadful burning of the city of London - published 1667 The book is reasonably firmly bound in quarter leather with brown cloth boards and simple gilt lettering and decoration to the spine, the binding probably dates from the early nineteenth century, it is quite bumped and rubbed with minor staining. The text block is quite browned and stained with some damage to page edges, writing to the bottom of the first page and page numbers added in ink indicating that it was once part of a larger volume, the title page is consequently lacking and has been supplied in manuscript, there is a rather handsome armorial bookplate to the front endpaper and some notes. A coloured engraving of a "View of part of London as it appeared in the Great Fire, 1666" has been tipped in by way of a frontispiece and there is a large folding engraving of The Monument to the Great Fire, which is quite browned and marked with repairs at the folds. The text itself is complete in 33 pages. Incomplete but with additions that more than compensate.

Nostradamus, Michel.
Chez Daniel Winkeermans,, Amsterdam, 1667. Collation: [1], *8, **2, A-H12 I1. [Lacks blanks]. Pagination: [22], 186p. Modern antique back, blind stamp floral to spine with gilt ruling, gilt title on label, over marbled boards, 19th c. marbled endpapers, binders tan cloth, matching at inner hinges, no affect, text block marbled. Leaves are clean and crisp, few of them tightly trimmed at outer margin, with no affect, overall a near fine copy. Text in French. Scarce early Amsterdam edition. A rarity to find any early edition in this fine of condition. Michel Nostradamus (1503-1566), physician to the cities of Aix and Lyons during the plague and claimed prognosticator, believed himself to be inspired and so began to record his visions in centuries of quatrains. His fame as a prophet particularly gained after his "prediction" of Henry II's death from a wound suffered during a tournament. Nostradamus remains one of the most famous fortunetellers today, aided by the fact, no doubt, that his quatrains are vague enough to be applied to several different events. This work contains the preface of Nostradamus to Caesar, life of the author and observations on his prophecies, epistle to Henry II, Centuries I to XII, and Presages. Citations: Chomarat: 137. KIRCHER, ATHANASIUS
Amsterdam: Jansson, 1667. FIRST EDITION. One of the grandest and most important works on China up to its time, Kircher s China Illustrata (China, Illustrated Through Its Monuments, Both Sacred and Profane) inaugurated the late 17th-century age of European fascination with China. This first edition is in Latin; the book was quickly reissued in Dutch, English, and French. Kircher s wide-ranging and magnificently illustrated work covers Chinese language, history, religion, government, architecture, mechanical marvels, and natural wonders. The work brought to the attention of large numbers of Westerners the wonders and curiosities of the Far East including foot binding, Confucianism, the Great Wall, lacquer, bird s nest soup, and tea. One of the most distinguished German scholars of the 17th century, Kircher (1601-1680) is sometimes called the last Renaissance man. He made wide-ranging contributions in oriental studies, geology, and medicine. He attempted to collect and catalogue the world s knowledge, employing a vast network of correspondents to gather information. This book represents a milestone in the study of Chinese language. Kircher learned from missionary Michael Boym of the now-famous Nestorian inscription at His-an fu, which showed that Christian missionaries reached China in A.D. 781. The transcription and transliteration of the His-an fu inscription, printed here for the first time, make up the first Chinese vocabulary ever printed in the West . . . the standard text for the study of Chinese until the nineteenth century (Merrill). This is a very handsome, fresh cop … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

PHILALETHE, Eiraeneus.
Joannemm Janssonium, Amsterdam, 1667.

Dimensioni in cm. 34x24x3.5.

(Aesop). Phaedrus; Laurentius, Johannes, ed.
Amstelodami: Apud Johannem Janssonium à Waesberge & Viduam Elizaei Weyerstraet, 1667. 8vo (19 cm, 7.5"). Frontis., [60], 462, [204] pp.; illus. Sole edition of this annotated, indexed, and illustrated version of Phaedrus's classical fables. Phaedrus (ca. 15 bc – 50 ad), originator of the expression generally translated as "adding insult to injury" (book V, fable III in the present collection), was the first to put Aesop's fables into Latin verse, adding a number of his own Aesopian-inspired pieces. The editio princeps was published in Troyes, 1596 and regularly reprinted thereafter. Here, in => the first illustrated edition printed in the Netherlands, Johannes Laurentius provides copious annotations in both Latin and Greek for each fable, as well as variant readings and indices of topics and morals.    The volume opens with a copperplate frontispiece signed by Chr. Hagens, and almost every fable is graced by an in-text copper engraving. There are => two instances here of the correct illustration being mounted over the one actually printed on the page (pp. 133 and 205) — while => the risqué engraving for fable XIII, on p. 276, sometimes found obscured or removed, appears in this copy in crisp and uncensored form. Schweiger called this vignette, a brothel scene, "sehr anstössige," but Dibdin opined that fewer owners removed the offensive image than claimed to have done so.    The type of this edition is quite small; the engravings, on the other hand, are quite large, at half-a-page each!    Binding: 19th-century quarter green calf with later cream paper–cov …

Ottima copia genuina.
