Biography From a family from Ávila in Spain, who had supplied several constables to the kingdom of Cyprus, Enrico Caterino Davila was brought early to France, where his father enjoyed the favor of King Henry III and Catherine of Medici (in memory of which he received the names of Henri and Catherin). It was first page, then took service under Henri IV during the civil war, and distinguished himself in Honfleur and before Amiens (1597). After peace, he returned to Padua, which he was forced to leave in 1606 following a duel, and settled in Venice, where he resumed arms and rendered great services to the Republic. He died assassinated near Verona in 1631. Since his return from France, Davila had not stopped working on a History of the civil wars of France since the death of Henri II (1559) until the peace of Ferrois (1598); he published it in 1630 in Venice in Italian (it appeared for Bouillet editions very preferable, in Paris, 1644, and in Venice, 1733).
[Puebla: Viuda de Juan de Borja y Gandia, not later than 1666]. Folio extra (43 x 31 cm, 16.875" x 12.125"). [1] f. <br><br>The collection of tithes in the bishopric of Puebla was a serious concern of Biship Osorio. In 1662 or 1663 he had issued a broadside reminder to inhabitants of Puebla that they had to pay church tithes on farm products and produce. Distinctions were made between tithes expected of Spaniards, as well as all others "que no fueren Indios" ("Mestiços, Chinos, Mulatos, Negros"), as opposed to Naturales" (i.e., native Americans). Tithes due from the first category of inhabitants include just about anything one can imagine, including grain, corn, chick peas, pine nuts, cocoa, fruit, butter, milk, cheese, sugar, honey, vinegar, maguey, vanilla, and chilies, as well as fish, beef, cattle, chickens, doves, pigeons, and tobacco, hides, cotton, mules, silk, etc. "Encomenderes" owe a tithe on all maiz, mantas, and other "frutos de la tierra" which the Indians pay them in tribute.<br> Products listed that were subject to tithes to be paid by "Indios" were also wide ranging, but somewhat less extensive. Finally, there was a list of products on which native Americans were exempt from paying tithes, including cotton, cacao, chilies, vanilla, pulque, maguey, etc. => These lists provided a vivid picture of products available in New Spain at mid-17th-century.<br> In this follow-up publication, Bishop Osorio implements the appointment of individuals to sell the items received as "in kind" tithes (i.e., corn, butter, etc.). Substantial text articulates the qualities … [Click Below for Full Description]

SORBIERE (Samuel)]

[Click Below for Full Description]

VOSSIUS (Isaac)
paris: 1666. "With the growing importance of maritime trade and exploration there was considerable speculation about the cause of tides. Vossius rejected the influence of moon, stars, or occult forces, arguing that the sun's heat was the single cause of tides, winds, and ocean currents. He explained that between the tropics the tides followed the sun, and winds blew in the same direction. But the continents formed a barrier to this movement and so the water was deflected north and south, which accounted for the ocean currents" (ODNB).

[Puebla: Viuda de Juan de Borja y Gandia, not later than 1666]. Folio extra (43 x 31 cm, 16.875" x 12.125"). [1] f. The collection of tithes in the bishopric of Puebla was a serious concern of Biship Osorio. "Encomenderes" owe a tithe on all maiz, mantas, and other "frutos de la tierra" which the Indians pay them in tribute.    Products listed that were subject to tithes to be paid by "Indios" were also wide ranging, but somewhat less extensive. Finally, there was a list of products on which native Americans were exempt from paying tithes, including cotton, cacao, chilies, vanilla, pulque, maguey, etc. => These lists provided a vivid picture of products available in New Spain at mid-17th-century.    In this follow-up publication, Bishop Osorio implements the appointment of individuals to sell the items received as "in kind" tithes (i.e., corn, butter, etc.). Substantial text articulates the qualities of charac … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary vellum boards. Browned and foxed in places, a few minor edge-tears. Vellum worn and marked, spine backstrip entirely lost but stitching and cords sound, no front flyleaves. Small area of title-page and verso of engraved title-page showing remains of a removed inscription. The second edition of an important work first printed in 1641. Johann Vesling (1598-1649) was professor at Padua and in this textbook he &apos;aimed to explain the parts of the body as they were encountered during dissection and to avoid discussion of theoretical matters in order not to create confusion. However, he departed from his stated purpose to give a clear picture of the circulation of the blood and action of the heart based on Harvey&apos;s research. His descriptions of the lymphatics and assertion that four pulmonary veins normally empty into the heart&apos;s left auricle are of particular scientific significance&apos; (Heirs of Hippocrates). This copy is complete with the portrait of Gerard Blaes, sometimes missing. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Very shortly thereafter, in an effort to rebuild London in a safe manner, the King issue various directives as to how the city would be rebuilt. This text takes nearly half of the back page with a few portions including: "In the first place, upon the desires of the Lord Mayor...He is pleased to prohibit the hasty building of any edifices till such speedy care be taken for the re-edification of the city as may best secure it from the like accidents, & raise it to a greater beauty and comeliness than formerly it had...required to pull down what shall contrary to this Prohibition be erected...no person erect any house or building but of brick or stone...strongly arching their cellars by which divers persons have received notable benefit in the late Fire. That Fleet Street, Cheap-side, Cornhill, and all other eminent streets, be a breadth to prevent the mischief one side may receive from the other by fire..." with much, much more. The text essentially created an early form of a "building code" to prevent similar disasters in future. Great to have this report in the London Gazette, and from less than 2 weeks after the fire ended. Complete as a single s … [Click Below for Full Description]
