Chereau, Jaccques
Chez J. Chereau, Paris, 1666. Hand-colored print New York harbor and based on the caption below, possibly attempting to show the English takeover of New Amsterdam, soon to become New York, in 1666. This engraving was issued as a vue d'optique, but the upper title with the lettering in reverse was cut out of this copy, which was trimmed so there are no blank margins remaining. As typical of the genre (vue d'optiques), the depiction of New York harbor bears no resemblance to the actual place, then, or ever, as the artwork was done by someone who almost surely never set eyes on the place he was conjuring up. The print is comparatively scarce, with no copies located on OCLC First Search other than what appears only an internet resource at AAS. N.d., circa 1770s, when Chereau was active and issuing other prints relating to New York. 26.5 by 38 cm. Printed on a thick paper, which is now pasted onto a limp card. Condition: light soiling and age toning. Minor close tearing and edge wear. Flattened creasing down center.

"Valsalva's treatise is not only a worthy companion to Duverney's work but far surpasses it in richness of content and in a rare combination of precision and conciseness. The treatise deals with the anatomy and physiology of the organ of hearing and also contains chapters on the pathology of the ear" (Politzer). The Italian anatomist Antonio Maria Valsalva (1666-1723) was "without doubt, the most eminent scientist of the transitional period from the 17th to the 18th century" (Politzer) and his specialty was the anatomy of the ear. The treatise, first published in Bologna in 1704, was republished by Valsalva's pupil, Giovanni Battista Morgagni (1682-1771), who added his own work De aure humani tractatus, along with the anatomical letters that constitute an extensive commentary on Valsalva's work. Lootsman-- Theunis Jacobsz
SEA CHART OF THE CARIBBEAN "Pascaert van de Carybes, Nieu Nederlandt, Brazil, de Flaemsche en Soute Eylanden ende landen daer omtrent gelegen." Copper engraving published by Theunis Jacobsz Lootsman in Amsterdam 1666. This progenitor chart covers the American shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The objective of the map was to present in atlas form the most desirable information from the "West Indische Paskaert" maps of Willem Blaeu. These charts had previously been sold as loose sheets. To accomplish this, Theunis Jacobsz concentrated on the waters between the Cape Verde islands and Azores, and removed the Gulf of Mexico. New Amsterdam is identified on the map as "Amsterdam". The map is decorated with the family emblem of a sailor holding a lead and line, and the official coat of arms of the Dutch West India Company. This chart was copied by Colom, Doncker, Goos, De Wit and others. Literature: Koeman IV, p. 223-226, Jac 1; Burden 298 Price: Euro1.350,- (excl VAT/BTW).

FABRICIUS, Hieronymus
Lyon: Jean-Antoine Huguetan, 1666. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Hieronymus Fabricius, also known as Aquapendente, was a 16th-century Padua surgeon known as the 'Father of Embryology'. He published a number of important medical treatises, all of which were important in the development of medical sciences in Italy. His writings, especially those on surgery, included detailed surgical techniques, types of incisions, preferred tools and instruments, and when to perform certain operations. His anatomical research yielded important, lasting results. He found valves in human veins and discovered important features of blood flow. Perhaps his influence on William Harvey, his most famous student, was what propelled Harvey and his research on systemic circulation. According to 'Heirs of Hippocrates' on Fabricius's 'Surgery Works', This work "described techniques entirely new for that age. It was reprinted many times, even into the 18th-century.".

Nieuhof, Johannes (Johan Neuhof)
Amsterdam. Jacob van Meurs. 1666. First German edition. Quarto. Hardcover 19th century binding. Poor: a working copy only. 452 Pages, richly illustrated with engraving, many double paged. Map. Text in German. A poor copy of what is regarded as the difinitve account of the Dutch embassy to Peking. As purser of the VOC-embassy to Peking Johan Nieuhof in 1655 had special instructions to observe all "farms, towns, palaces, rivers, ... [and other] buildings" that he might pass by, drawing them "in straight form and figure", as well as remains of the historical victory of the Tartars that brought an end to the reign of the Ming dynasty. Nieuhofs brother Hendrik produced an ample study of China, with many images, text and explanation of the latest events resulting in this publication. The 150 pictures encouraged chinoiserie, which became especially popular in the 18th century. Many artists and architects based their designs on the pictures in Nieuhof's books. The original pictures were rediscovered in 1984 in the collection of prince Roland Bonaparte, an anthropologist who collected material about Madagascar, Lapland and the Native Americans. Unfortunately this copy has extreme wear, notible losses and should be considered a working copy only. The engravings are perhaps the most interesting aspect of this copy!.

With an engraved frontispiece. Contemporary sheepskin parchment. 315, [4], [1 blank] pp. Rare first and only edition of a book with entertaining riddles in prose and verse, for use within the family or at social parties, by the popular author Petrus Croon IV (1634-1682). He states in his preface, that because his earlier published book Moy-al was so graciously received, he presents his readers with another collection of riddles and epigrams, to feed both their lust for pleasure and their lust for learning. All riddles are presented to Philoxenus, a lover of guests, and are told by Conviva, an invited friend. The riddles are given in verse and the answers are afterwards discussed in dialogues, with the solutions hinted at but not bluntly given, because Croon believed it would keep interest when the answer was not fully known. Included at the end is a section containing the solutions to all riddles and emblems of the Moy-al.With library stamps and bookplate. Frontispiece and title-page closely trimmed, but without loss of the image or text. Rebacked, lacking last flyleaf. Overall in good condition. 1666. Johannes de RAEY : Clavis philosophiae naturalis Aristotelico-Cartesiana. Editio secunda aucta opusculis philosophicis varii argumenti, quibus errores scholarum passim deteguntur, ac veritas philosophiae, quam Cartesianam vocant, confirmatur. Amsterdam, Daniel Elzevier, 1677. Nombreus … [Click Below for Full Description]

Arca Noae. Sive historia imperiorum ex regnorum à condito orbe ad nostra tempora.Leiden & Rotterdam, Petrus Hackius, 1666. 12mo. With engraved title-page by Wingendorp. Contemporary sheepskin parchment. [32], 545, [43], [1 blank] pp. One of the two first editions published simultaneously of a historical work written by the German historian Georgius Hornius (1620-1670). "In the dusk of his life, he moved to universal history, an endeavor that culminated with his Arca Noae, which comprised the chronicles of Europe, alongside descriptions of the cultures of China, Egypt, Assyria, ancient Greece, Rome, and pre-Columbian America, and surveys of their religion, art and literature" (Kowner). Entitled "Noah's ark", it contains the history of the world from its creation to the 17th century. It successively deals with all the great empires and kingdoms and their important founders and rulers. It contains narratives about the founding of Damascus, the founding of Arab kingdoms by Ishmael and Isaac, the caliphates, and the Turks. Besides sections on the Middle East, the book discusses Chinese and American history, struggling with sources that predate the biblical sources. With an old shelf mark on spine and a library stamp on flyleaf. Browned with some small spots throughout, engraved title-page slightly thumbed, a water stain on leaf *2 and a small tear in leaf *3, and frequent wormholes, slightly affecting the text near the end of the book. Bookblock only loosely attached to binding. Otherwise a good copy. Alden & Landis 666/75; R. Kowner, From white to yellow (2014), 9; Sabin 33013.

Silvestre, Israel (1621-1691)
Paris, 1666. [Click Below for Full Description]

He died assassinated near Verona in 1631. Since his return from France, Davila had not stopped working on a History of the civil wars of France since the death of Henri II (1559) until the peace of Ferrois (1598); he published it in 1630 in Venice in Italian (it appeared for Bouillet editions very preferable, in Paris, 1644, and in Venice, 1733).
[Puebla: Viuda de Juan de Borja y Gandia, not later than 1666]. Folio extra (43 x 31 cm, 16.875" x 12.125"). [1] f. <br><br>The collection of tithes in the bishopric of Puebla was a serious concern of Biship Osorio. In 1662 or 1663 he had issued a broadside reminder to inhabitants of Puebla that they had to pay church tithes on farm products and produce. Distinctions were made between tithes expected of Spaniards, as well as all others "que no fueren Indios" ("Mestiços, Chinos, Mulatos, Negros"), as opposed to Naturales" (i.e., native Americans). Tithes due from the first category of inhabitants include just about anything one can imagine, including grain, corn, chick peas, pine nuts, cocoa, fruit, butter, milk, cheese, sugar, honey, vinegar, maguey, vanilla, and chilies, as well as fish, beef, cattle, chickens, doves, pigeons, and tobacco, hides, cotton, mules, silk, etc. "Encomenderes" owe a tithe on all maiz, mantas, and other "frutos de la tierra" which the Indians pay them in tribute.<br> Products listed that were subject to tithes to be paid by "Indios" were also wide ranging, but somewhat less extensive. Finally, there was a list of products on which native Americans were exempt from paying tithes, including cotton, cacao, chilies, vanilla, pulque, maguey, etc. => These lists provided a vivid picture of products available in New Spain at mid-17th-century.<br> In this follow-up publication, Bishop Osorio implements the appointment of individuals to sell the items received as "in kind" tithes (i.e., corn, butter, etc.). Substantial text articulates the qualities … [Click Below for Full Description]
