        Paradise lost

London: Printed [by Samuel Simmons], and are to be sold by Peter Parker, Robert Boulter, and Matthias Walker,, 1667. A Poem Written in Ten Books By John Milton. Quarto (181 × 133 mm). Early 20th-century full crushed red morocco by Riviere & Sons, sides with double frame in gilt and blind enclosing central gilt cartouche, spine lettered gilt in two compartments, others with gilt motifs, blind and gilt rules either side of raised bands gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Red morocco-backed folding case. Without initial blank. The C. W. Clark?-Silver?-Webster copy, with the book label of Paul Francis Webster. Joints expertly restored, front free endpaper reattached at inner margin. Ownership inscription washed from head of title, title leaf with very slight loss at outer top edge not affecting printed area, text faintly and evenly toned throughout, a very good copy. First edition, first state title-page. The contract for the publication of Paradise Lost between Milton and the stationer Samuel Simmons is the earliest agreement between an author and a publisher for which there exists documentary evidence. Sealed on 27 April 1667, it specifies a first edition of 1,300 copies. The first edition did not finally sell out until the spring of 1669, and six successive title-pages were used to promote its sale in that time. These are traditionally described as six distinct issues, though there is no discernible relationship between the states of the titles and the settings of the preliminaries, and so "issue" is over-specific. The present is the traditional first state title-page, dated in the year of publication: Simmons registered for his copy on 20 August 1667 and the book was published late in October or early in November. This copy has the earliest setting of the preliminaries, without the note The Printer to the Reader.

Umbra in Luce: Sive consensus et dissensus religionum profanarum, Judaismi, Samaratanismi, Muhammedismi, Gingis-Chanismi, atque Paganismi

Jena: Bauhofer, 1667. Small quarto, with nine woodcuts throughout the text and a folding plate; title a little stained and narrowly shaved at bottom margin, final leaf repaired with small loss of text at one corner, single leaf V3 supplied in facsimile; a good copy overall in modern gilt ruled mottled calf, leaf of manuscript notes dated 1718 pasted to front blank endpaper. Esoteric idols and child sacrifice. Scarce comparative study of non-Christian religious practices (the so called religionum profanum), containing a striking assemblage of woodcut plates depicting exotic idols from the Middle East and Asia. This esoteric book on comparative religion was authored by Johann Ernst Gerhard, orientalist and professor of theology at the University of Jena. Johann Gerhard clearly identifies his own faith as a Christian of Jena (indeed, he was the son of the notable seventeenth century Lutheran theologian of the same name). This is a work of some scholarly and linguistic breadth, surveying the beliefs and practices of Judaism, Samaritanism, Islam, and paganism This final category includes Chinese and Hindu deities, as well as the ancient gods of the Mongolian steppe ('Gingis Chanismi'). Gerhard's book is in sympathy with the universalising tendency of seventeenth century scholarship, where parallels of belief such as fertility goddesses and trinitarianism are proved among disparate cultures. Nonetheless, the legitimacy of pagan belief is consistently denied in the light of Christian monotheism.A challenge for any printer of the seventeenth century, the text comprises a range of typefaces including Arabic, Hebrew and Greek. It includes a smattering of truly exotic and probably fanciful words printed using woodcut inserts (Tibetan and Elamite being two such examples). The woodcut images and folding plates are visually arresting, and include the flaming bronze idol of Moloch, purportedly the site of child sacrifice in ancient times. Other images present a Mayan glyph, Toman coins, and a Hindu god. The folding plate depicts a Javanese shadow puppet. With an early nineteenth century bookplate of the Linonian Meeting, a secret society founded at Yale University in 1753.

Historia de las islas de Mindanao, Jolo, y sus adyacentes

One of the earliest and most important Works on the Philippine Islands, the strikingly rare first edition. 1667. Madrid. Herederos de Pablo del Val. In folio. 12 ff. + 567 + 3 ff. Original vellum, a little soiled, else fine. Title page with marginal restoration affecting a few letters, some foxing spots but generally a very fresh and clean copy.First edition. The Combes is, by any consideration, one of the single most important works on the Philippine Islands of the 17th century. "Preciadisima obra . . ., el mejor que existe sobre Mindanao y Joló, y uno de las más notables de . . . la Bibliografía Filipina", "con la rareza, que es mucha, de esta obra magistral, compite su importancia, es la más antigua y circunstanciada historia de las islas del sur [its rarity, which is considerable, of this magistral work, competes with its importance, it is the oldest and most remarkable history of the islands of the south]" (Retana). Combes (1620 ?" 1665) was a Spanish missionary born in Zaragoza; in 1640 he travelled to the Philippines where he stayed for 25 years, giving him time to get well acquainted with the natives, their social and cultural reality, he travelled profusely. Death found him in Acapulco, en route back to Spain. "This History has always been considered one of the most valuable pearls of Phillipine literature, for Combes was an uncommonly intelligent observer who personally visited most of the localities which he describes, while occupying himself a high position in his order, so that he not only wrote but made history. His book and that of Forrest were made up to the time of Semper?s travels, the authorities followed by all geographers. It is improbable that more than a few ever saw Combes? original, of which, in all Middle Europe, only one example is to be found (Chamisso?s copy given to the Prussian State Library in Berlin). Especially interesting are the notes on the Negritos, showing that two hundred years ago they were comparatively common in localities in Mindanao, where they have now entirely disappeared. "The zoologist, too, will be interested in Combes? statement that wild elephants were then to be found in the Islands."---Translation from Blumentritt." (Maggs, 1923). "Obra bien trabajada y clásica por excelencia" (Palau). The work contains some of the first ethnographical descriptions of its inhabitants, as well as comments on the native tongs and costumes. Of extreme rarity in the market, only one copy in the market in the last 30 years according to Americana Exchange. Retana ?"arguably Philippines´ foremost bibliographer- had a reprint made, out of the great scarcity and importance.Palau, 57910. Medina, Filipinas, 193. Retana, 15.

Shilhavtiyah [Hebrew] or, the burning of London in the year 1666

Commemorated and improved in a CX discourses, meditations, and contemplations. Divided into four parts, treating of: I. The sins, or spiritual causes procuring that judgment. II. The natural causes of fire, morally applied. III. The most remarkable passages and circumstances of that dreadful fire. IV. Counsels and comfort unto such as are sufferers by the said judgment. The folding plate is a dramatic picture of the Fire (London's fier began September the second, 1666). It depicts a view of London in flames as seen from the south bank of the Thames. There is a maze of houses in the foreground, London bridge crossing a river teeming with small boats (two on fire) and the burning city of London behind with St. Paul's cathedral in its midst.Samuel Rolle (or Rolls), (ca. 1628-1679/80), was a Church of England clergyman, born in London but having enjoyed various preferments outside the city itself. In 1665 it was reported that Rolls "liveth in or near Kingston upon Thames and practiseth phisick". Rolls was elected chaplain at Bridewell on 20 October 1669, was ordained in 1677 but never got on with the Bishop of London. From 1664 until his death Rolle was a hospitaller at St. Thomas's Hospital in Southwark.Rolle was far from being alone in using the fire as an excuse for preaching that it was nothing less than God's condemnation of a sinful London. The book is, however, not simply a rant against social decay. It also contains vivid eye witness material on the plight of homeless Londoners forced to camp in tents in Moorfields, and on those, such as carters and landlords, who profited from the catastrophe. The author also describes the dangerous state of ruined buildings, whose tottering walls threatened to collapse on to passers-by. Rolle's book also reveals some interesting observations about the fire, how people felt about it and its effect on Londoners: how some nearly died of fright, the losses that were suffered, how some got lost among the ruins and could not recognise even their own street. He voices his disgust at opportunists profiting from the fire, landlords in the areas not affected who raised their rents, carters who charged extortionate fees to carry away people's belongings, and thieves who looted people's possessions.8vo., with a large folding engraved frontispiece of the fire, (26) + 128 + (4) + 220 + (4) + 144pp., possibly wanting a half-title, skilfully rebound in old-style half calf over marbled boards, flat spine with gilt lines and label.       Louis Pequineau, Au Mans 1667 - In-8.

Reginae Christianissmae Iura in Ducatum Brabantiae, et Alios Ditionis Hispanicae Principatus

1667. No place, 1667. Titlepage, (iii),293pp. Contemporary mottled calf. A beautiful wide-margined copy of this work. The War of Devolution (1667?-1668) saw Louis XIV's French armies overrun the Hapsburg controlled Spanish Netherlands. Louis's claims to the Spanish Netherlands were tenuous. His wife, Maria Theresa, the daughter of Philip IV, had renounced her rights of a Spanish inheritance in return for a large dowry at the time of her marriage. The dowry had yet to be paid, however. When Philip died in 1665, Louis' lawyers justified Louis's possible claims by arguing that, while Spanish laws of succession meant the throne of Philip IV would pass to his son Charles II, ancient laws of Duchy of Brabant ruled that the Spanish Netherlands could "devolve" to Philip's daughter from his first marriage, Louis's wife. France pressed the claim in 1667 and the present work was a kind of war announcement. The Latin edition was published the same year as the French one.

The Island of Candia [Crete] with Candia capital city of the Island of the same name. "Candie ville Métropolitaine de l'isle de même nom " & " Isle de Candie

Greece: Paris P du Val. " Chez l'Auteur, en l'Isle du Palais , sur Quay de l'Horologe, au coin de la rue Harlay." 1667. Copper engraved map and town plan of Crete and Iraklion, by Pierre du Val from his Atlas " Cartes De Géographie Les Plus Nouvelles Et Les Plus Fidèles." Modern colour; verso blank. 2 on 1 plate. A scarce sheet from du Val's atlas, the upper plan showing the fortifications of the city of Iraklion; the map showing the divisions of the island with the islands of Milos, Sikinos, Folegandros, Ios, Santorini, Anafi and Astipalea, to the north. Compass rose to sea. Good impression; odd spots; dampstain to edge of upper margin; remargined to sides with paper of the same atlas; numerous folds and creases; lower map with long crease through island with some holes, backed at some time with old paper [ the description of Candia from the same atlas, but sadly with the text face down so verso blank]. Condition not perfect but acceptable for such a scarce map. Pierre Du Val (1619-1683) was one of the most influential and prolific mapmakers and publishers working in Paris in the third quarter of the seventeenth century. He was the nephew of Nicolas Sanson, the leading French mapmaker of the period, and Geographer to the King of France from 1650. He was also responsible for providing maps for other Parisian editors of the period; Jollain, de Fer and Berey amongst others. The early years of Du Val's career were devoted to his atlas projects, while later in his career he was to concentrate on separately published, and often multi-sheet, maps. His first atlas was the Cartes Geographiques Methodiquement Divisees published in 1654. This contained only a few of Du Val's own maps with the others comprising those of Sanson, Briet, Boisseau and even those of the earlier Dutch mapmakers, Mercator, Blaeu, Hondius and Jansson. The atlas was re-issued in 1655 and 1667, and the title was altered to "Cartes De Géographie Les Plus Nouvelles Et Les Plus Fidèles." These later issues contained more of Du Val's own maps but were still very much supplemented by the maps of other makers. Du Val also specialised in producing parlour games, games designed to teach geography and even snakes and ladders! Small sized works also formed part of his output as did geographical tables, genealogies and chronologies. Other early works by Du Val included La Geographie Francoise, La Geographie Universelle, Cartes Pours Les Itineraires and Cartes Des Provinces Eschues A La Reine amongst others. After his death in 1683 the business was continued first by his widow Marie Desmaretz and then by his daughters. ( United East India Company)in 1633 he died in 1638. leaving the company to his sons Joan and Cornelius Of Cornelius little is know; his name appearing on in the prefaces of books and atlases only until c1645. Dr Joan Blaeu [ 1596-1673] who had studied at Leiden took over the management of the business and established its fame. He was also appointed Hydrographer to the V. O. C. ( 1638), but his interests leant more to geography than maritime cartography. His aim was" a full description of heaven, earth and water" ( Koeman) which was unachievable. but his work produced the magnificent "Atlas Major" and the Town books of the Netherlands and Italy; works unsurpassed in history and modern times. The "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum " or "Atlas Novus" Willem Blaeu's great project enlarging the "Appendix" was advertised in 1634, was first published in a preliminary edition in 1635.
