[Europe and Middle East Travel Journal].
No place, 1666/1667.. 4to. French ms., ink on paper. 54 pp. of text, with pen and pencil illustrations of monuments, coins, church plans and details to thirteen pages (2 with added flaps): a total of thirty leaves; later blanks (watermarked 1818) at rear. Early 19th century royal blue morocco with giltstamped spine title. All edges gilt.. An anonymous manuscript journal of a trip from Rome to Jerusalem (illustrated with a skyline view) and Egypt undertaken in 1666/67, at the same time as the well-known and published Palestinian voyages of Barthelemy Deschamps, Franz Ferdinand von Troilo, and the Jesuit Michel Nau. The traveller carefully prepared his journey by prefixing useful information to his manual: the manuscript begins with glossary of Neapolitan terms ("paniello - pain", "fratiello - frere", etc.) The note of the phrase "un filiolo de vingt une niene" (for "un garson de vingt-un ans") suggests that this is the traveller's own age, placing his date of birth around 1645. This glossary is followed by two pages of coin sketches (gold and silver currency valid in Naples at the time, including Maltese currency). After these preliminaries, he begins the account of his voyage, obviously penned during the journey itself, rather than in hindsight: the traveller departs from Rome on 21 December 1666 in the company of two fellows, one from Oostende and two from Conde. The description of Naples includes a lengthy account of the antiquities of Pozzuoli ("Poussole"), which the author visits on 4 January 1667, waiting for a favourable wind to speed him to Sicily. Having reached the … [Click Below for Full Description]

GOOS, Pieter
Amsterdam, 1666. unbound. Map. Uncolored copperplate engraving. Image measures 17.5 x 21.5". This sea chart depicts the British aisles with North oriented to the right. The map extends to include the English Chanel and coastline of Normandy. In addition to port, the index also includes soundings, sand bars, fishing banks and navigational hazards. Each region is adorned with a decorative coat of arms, and embellished compass roses appear at the top and bottom of the map. This map was published in Goos' "De Zee-Atlas Ofte Water-Weereld" and remains in its original uncolored state, which allows Goos' intricate line work to shine. It is in good condition with foxing, soiling, and off-setting, but overall an attractive copy. Small tear on lower right margin not affecting the image. Pieter Goos (1616-1675) was a Dutch cartographer, engraver, publisher, printer, and print-seller based in Amsterdam. He belonged to a noted family of cartographers, headed by his father Abraham, who prepared plates for many maps published in the important atlases of the time. His pilot guide, the "Zee-Spiegel," provided some of the first charts of newly explored regions in the West Indies and Western Africa, and his "Zee-Atlas" is considered one of the best sea atlases of its time. This map is a fine example of Goos' high quality, visually appealing sea charts.
