CORTESE Giulio Cesare
In 24, pp. (10) + 96; 130 + (2b); 96; 71 + (1b); 84; 72. Legatura in p. pg. coeva. Brunet, II, 313. NEWTON, Isaac.
An exceptionally fine copy, in contemporary Cambridge-style paneled calf, of arguably the most important paper in the history of optics. Dibner 144; Horblit 79a; Evans 29.

"This was Newton's first scientific publication and one of his most important, leading to his brilliant work in optics. In this he recounted how he placed a glass prism in the path of a ray of light entering his darkened chamber thru a window-slit. Instead of a circular pattern of light upon the opposite wall Newton saw an oblong spectrum. A second, inverted prism restored the refracted light into a white ray. He concluded that sunlight (or white light) was composed of a mixture of light of many colors, each having its own degree of refrangibility and that none could be converted into another. This paper led to extended controversies with Hooke, Huygens, Linuc, Lucas, Pardies, and others" (Dibner).

"Newton had encountered the problem of colors during his years of discovery as an undergraduate, and very early he had entertained the idea that colors do not arise from the modification of homogeneous light, as the prevailing theory held, but from the separation of a heterogeneous mixture of rays each of which causes a different sensation of color. Near the beginning of 1666, he first performed his basic experiment of projecting a spectrum with a prism...On 6 February 1672, Newton mailed to Henry Oldenburg, the Secretary of the Royal Society, a summary statement of the theory he had expounded with far more detail and experimental support in his [Lucasian] lectures. Bible. New Testament. Turkish. -Nogai)
Oxford: H. Hall, 1666. FIRST EDITION, Latin title, followed by Turkish title and text in Arabic script, slightly browned around the edges, a few spots, including rust spots with the occasional loss of a letter or two, tear in lower margin of 3h3, not affecting text pp. [iv], 160, 600, small 4to, contemporary blind ruled calf, a bit worn at corners, skilfully rebacked, Macclesfield bookplate and blind stamps, with a number of corrections to the text in a contemporary hand, very good. 'In December 1655 Seaman was appointed secretary of the trade committee (which met at Westminster) at a yearly salary of £100. Some years later he became involved in an international project of evangelization of the Levant, originating in the circle of Samuel Hartlib, whose millenarian convictions included belief in the imminent conversion to Christianity of the Muslims and a determination to hasten the process. In England the plan was fostered by Hartlib himself, Henry Oldenburg, John Durie, and above all Robert Boyle, with Edward Pococke and John Worthington taking a marginal role. It obtained even more support in the Netherlands, thanks mainly to the Bohemian scholar Jan Amos Comenius and the French refugee Petrus Serrarius. A fundamental role was to be played by the translation of the Bible into Turkish. The Dutch, who relied on a Polish convert to Islam in Constantinople, were slow, however, and only the Old Testament was completed. Boyle then turned to Seaman, who had already translated the Johannine epistles into Turkish in 1659, asking him to translate the entire New Testament. By 1664 S … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jose de Carabantes
1666. Seville. Imprenta de Juan Gomez de Blás. In 4to (202 mm x 147 mm). 19. Blue wrappers. First folio soiled with marginal tears eventually touching a few letters, foxing, corners dog-eared. One of the few documents available on the progress of the Capuchin Missions in Venezuela; the imprint contains valuable and rare notices on the manners & customs of the natives (mainly Caribes, Guamonteyes, Chaimas, Tapies, Azaguas & Cores) and with notices of the happenings and relations of Carabantes´ voyage to the region. Carabantes (1628 ? 1694) was one of the first Capuchin missionaries in America; although his name was Velazquez, he changed his name for that of his home town in 1645, when entering the order. In 1657, he arrived in the Island of Margarita (Venezuela), from there he went on to Caracas and Cumana, where he was able to evangelize the Caribes, a tribe notorious for its cruelty and ferocity. As often, the missionary learned the natives tongue and wrote subsequently a vocabulary for the missionaries. His stay in the region lasted for 9 years, after which he had to travel back to Spain to defend his fellow missionaries; after that, he planned to return to the Americas, but his superiors decided to keep him in Spain, where death found him short after. It is attributed to him the conversion of five ?caciques?. The same year, three editions were made, two in Seville (one by Gomez de Blás and one by Francisco Sanchez) and according to Maggs, one in Granada, also by Francisco Sanchez; we found no bibliographic reference to the Granada edition. [Click Below for Full Description]

Goos, Pieter:
Amsterdam. 1666.. Copper engraving with period outline color. Sheet size: 17 3/4 x 22 1/8 inches. Very good. One of the finest and most beautiful 17th-century charts of the Northeast of America, from DE ZEE ATLAS OFTER WATER-WEERELD. The 17th century was the Golden Age of Dutch mapmaking. As the world's greatest trading nation, marine cartography was a particular specialty, and no one produced more lavish sea charts than Pieter Goos. Finely drawn and engraved, printed on top quality paper, and beautifully colored, they were intended more for the merchant collector than the practical mariner. Goos' ZEE- ATLAS was the companion marine atlas of choice for Joan Blaeu's famous terrestrial atlas, the ATLAS MAIOR. This is the general chart of New Netherland from the ZEE- ATLAS. It covers the Atlantic coast of America from Cape Cod to Cape Hatteras. The emphasis is on the Dutch colony of New Netherland. New Amsterdam (the future New York) is shown at the tip of Manhattan Island. Many other place names of Dutch origin appear, including "Staten Eylandt," "Lange Eylandt," and "Vlysingen" (Flushing). Along the Delaware River a number of Dutch settlements are shown, including Fort Casimir, Nassau, and Elsenburgh, as well as the Swedish Fort Christina. The Schuylkill River, site of the future metropolis of Philadelphia, is also located. In New England, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are shown with their present names, and several early English settlements, such as "New Plymouth," are located. The delineation of the Chesapeake Bay is also quite good, with Jamestown locate … [Click Below for Full Description]

[FESTIVAL BOOK / FIREWORKS / LEOPOLD I]
Vienna, 1666. Soft cover. Very Good. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Folio [28.5 x 19.5 cm], (5) ff., including engraved frontispiece signed Melchior Küsell. (3) ff. of double-leaf folded plates also signed Küsell. Bound in patterned green wrappers. A fresh copy with excellent strikes of the plates. Very rare first and sole edition of the official festival program illustrating the firework display that marked the start of the month-long celebration of Leopold I's marriage to the Spanish Infanta Margaret Theresa, held in Vienna in the gardens of the Imperial Palace in December 1666. As the frontispiece and 3 double plates illustrate, and the accompanying text explains, the fireworks were arranged into an elaborate symbolic narrative, with fire representing the ardent love of the wedded pair, as well as the monarch's love for his subjects ("the Phoenix. consumes itself out of love for its people as the model of His Majesty"), their love for him ("ignit[ing] the flames of their most humble submission") etc. A re-creation of Mount Etna with the forge of Vulcan stands on one side, Mount Parnassus with the nine muses on the other, framing, in the foreground, two arches bearing hearts inscribed with the pair's initials, and set ablaze by the god of marriage. In our experience, firework displays accompanied by human figures forming tableaux are unusual. The text provides not only a very detailed description of each different kind of firework-including 'star fireworks', 'fire pumps', 'star grenades', and 'rockets'-but also describes the display in such a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Euclid
London: T[] R[] impensis Joh. Martyn ... , 1666. First edition edited by Nicolaus Mercator. 12mo. Engraved additional title page by William Faithorne, and 12 engraved geometric plates. [8], 136 pp. A-F12. Contemporary calf, recased, preserving original front endpapers with early gift inscription; rebacked with tan polished calf, red leather spine label. Rear free endpaper missing, covers a bit scuffed, text and plates quite clean and fresh. New Wing E3391 . The First edition of the Euclid to be edited by the great mathematician and astronomer, NICOLAUS MERCATOR (ca. 1619 - 1687), published in the same year as his election as a fellow of the Royal Society. Mercator's (not to be confused with the map-maker Gerhardus Mercator) contributions to astronomy were numerous and important, and his first book during his thirty year sojourn in England was HYPOTHESIS ASTRONOMICA NOVA (1664). Isaac Newton used Mercator's astronomical works "to fill gaps in his rather shaky knowledge of planetary and lunar theory ... [but] Mercator is remembered above all as a mathematician ... " - DSB. The publication of Mercator's small book LOGORITHMOTECHNIA in the year following his Euclid, is regarding as his most important achievement. His anonymously edited Euclid was published a second time by Martyn in 1678 -- but this First edition is very scarce: ABPC reports no copy at auction in the last 35 years
