LA FONTAINE, Jean de.
XIV, [2], 268, [2], 16; VIII, [2], 306, [8], [2 blank] pp.Beautiful, splendidly illustrated copy of the tales of La Fontaine in the so-called fermiers généraux edition. Originally published in 1665, La Fontaine's "lighthearted and bawdy yet literary and poetic" (Adams) short stories were reprinted numerous times in the following century. The licentious tales were officially frowned upon in France, but publication was tolerated as long as it was suggested that the book was printed outside of the country. France outsourced the collection of customs and taxes to the fermiers généraux, and when the philosophes criticised it sharply in the 1750s and 1760s for the luxurious style of living of its members, they reacted by commissioning an edition of La Fontaine's tales. With this luxurious and decadent publication, gifted to influential people over the next decades, the fermiers hoped to win over powerful patrons to their cause.Although bearing an "Amsterdam" imprint, the two volumes were in fact printed by the respected Parisian publisher Joseph-Gérard Barbou (1723-1790?). The text, identical to previous editions, was prepared by Jean-Baptiste Séroux d'Agincourt (1730-1814), who was himself a fermier. The superb illustrations were provided by Charles Eisen (1720-1778), who according to the dates on several images had begun working on them in 1759, and were engraved by several prominent engravers. "Of the eighty plates which were initially engraved, twenty or more were rejected, though we do not know by whom. Some were judged to be of inferior quality, in that the characters show … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert May
1665. The Accomplisht Cook or the Art & Mystery of Cookery by Robert May THE FIRST SUBSTANTIAL ENGLISH RECIPE BOOK AFTER THE RESTORATION. The Accomplisht Cook "looked back to a golden age of generous hospitality and magnificence, but also recognized more recent developments... May's work was a longer and more complete collection of recipes than had appeared before in English, and made use of illustration in a way that had not yet been seen. Cookery was still a closely guarded trade mystery, which May desired to make accessible to all, though admitting that not every reader could afford his most extravagant dishes." Egid Schor (Innsbruck 1627-1701 Innsbruck):
(1665). Pen, brown ink and watercolor on paper; Image: 261 x 343 mm; Sheet: 270 x 355 mm; several marginal tears, small marginal losses. This drawing is a copy of a design by Egid Schor, which today locates in Berlin. There exist two comparable copies in Vienna and Munich. Christina Strunck assumes that the Berlin copy is an early design by Egid for the Galleria Colonna, and the other three drawings (including the present one) are „ricordo" copies which Egid commissioned from his workshop. The Berlin drawing may be one of the earliest designs for the Galleria. It already includes the sirens, the lush draperies, as well as the supporting motifs that were later used in the Galleria Colonna. The present drawing, as well as the two previous designs, confirms Egid’s decisive role in the design of one of the most important Italian ceiling paintings of the 17th century. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Entwurf einer Eckdekoration für das Deckengemälde in der Galleria Colonna. Egid Schor (attr.) (Innsbruck 1627-1701 Innsbruck) or Philipp Schor (attr.) (Rome 1646 - 1701 Naples) und after Pietro da Cortona (Cortona 1596-1669 Rome):
ca. 1665. Pen, brown ink and watercolor on paper; 201 x 275mm. The present drawing is a copy after a design by Cortona for the ceiling painting at the Galleria Pamphilj. It is of significant importance as Cortona’s original draft is lost. The design bears important differences regarding the actual fresco. It is a solution for a corner decoration which was not executed in the end. Instead, most of the incorporating themes were used in quite similar compositions at the long side of the fresco. The present drawing suggest that the layout for the fresco was a different one in the beginning, with some similarities to the earlier finished salon ceiling painting at the Palazzo Barberieni. Cortona worked more than three years on the fresco of the Galleria Pamphilj and even drew the wrath of the pope on himself. This long time span could indicate a possible rescheduling of the original layout. As is known, the Galleria Pamphilj was one of the models for the ceiling painting at the Galleria Colonna. In this context, the present drawing could be linked to Egid Schor’s (1627-1701) designs for the Galleria Colonna, which came from the same album. Supposing, the present drawing was made as a template for the Galleria Colonna, Egid as well as Philipp Schor (1646-1701) could be held as potential draftsmen. The collaboration of both for the work at the Galleria Colonna is well documented. Also, the present drawing is definitely comparable to already known works of the two artists. This drawing belongs to a small group of drawings that can be related to the ceiling painting at the Galleria P … [Click Below for Full Description]

Madrid: Joseph Fernández, 1665. [38] (of [40]), 188 pages; lacks preliminary 2¶1. Duodecimo (5 3/4" x 3 3/4") bound in nineteenth-century gilt and blind-stamped sheep with decorative edges. Translated from the Latin by Esteban de Aguilar y Zúñiga. (Lust 445; Palau 156356; Streit V, 2321) First Spanish edition, originally published in Latin (1654).Martino Martini was an Italian Jesuit missionary, cartographer and historian, mainly working on ancient Imperial China. He set out for China in 1640, and arrived in Portuguese Macau in 1642 where he studied Chinese for some time. In 1643 he crossed the border and settled in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, from where he did much traveling in order to gather scientific information, especially on the geography of the Chinese empire: he visited several provinces, as well as Peking and the Great Wall. He made great use of his talents as missionary, scholar, writer and superior. Soon after Martini's arrival to China, the Ming capital Beijing fell to Li Zicheng's rebels (April, 1644) and then to the Manchus, and the last legitimate Ming emperor, the Chongzhen Emperor, hanged himself. Down in Zhenjiang, Martini continued working with the short-lived regime of Zhu Yujian, Prince of Tang, who set himself up as the (Southern) Ming Longwu Emperor. In 1651 Martini left China for Rome as the Delegate of the Chinese Mission Superior. On his way to Rome, he met printers in Antwerp, Vienna and Munich to submit to them historical and cartographic data he had prepared. The works were printed and made him famous. In 1658, after a most difficult journey, … [Click Below for Full Description]

WOODWARD, John.
1665. XI, [5], 496 pp.First edition, one of two simultaneously published issues, of the French translation of an essay regarding natural history and geology by the English naturalist John Woodward (1665-1728), translated by Pierre Noguez. "An important figure in the history of geology, Woodward proposed that a universal flood had once disintegrated all the stony and mineral matter forming the earth's crust along with animals and plants, . Fossils, he asserted, were definitely the remains of once living animals or plants. This essay had a wide effect in Great Britain and Europe" (Hoover). The folding plate shows a cross-section of the earth at a scale of about 1:90,000,000, with a four-layer crust surrounding a water core. The essay is followed by Woodward's response to Camerarius's critique on Woodward's theory. Included at the end are letters written by or to prominent scholars and some extracts from texts supporting Woodward's theory, mostly dealing with fossils.Endpapers waterstained. Binding worn along the extremities. Internally in very good condition.l Zittel, pp. 29-30; STCN (6 copies); cf. Hoover 896-897; Ward 2362; for Woodward: DSB XIV, pp. 500-503. London: W. Kemp, 1665. The last page (back cover) is detached. The pages are tanned, more deeply near the edges, with signs of wear along the edges. The text, regardless of the tanning, is easily read. The overall condition of the book, considering its age, is very good. The World is currently suffering with an active pandemic that has the world's political and medical leaders searching for solutions. The concerns of detecting, treating and curing the victims of this pandemic bring to mind the similar concerns that faced the populations in earlier times when unexpected plagues, or pestilences, that decimated the population fell upon them. In 1665-1666, for example, the Great Plague of London (which killed an estimated 100,000 people - almost a quarter of London's population - in 18 months) attacked England. W. Kemp, a medical practitioner at the time, decided he could best help the City of London fight this plague by publishing his recommendations in A Brief Treatise of the Nature, Causes, Signes, Preservation From, and Cure of The Pestilence. London: Printed by E. Cotes, for Henry Eversden, 1665. Sole edition, 8vo, (xxx), 184, (16), 92, (4) pp, lacking the half title, and with two leaves of the preliminaries (imprimatur and advertisement) bound at the end. Engraved coat of arms of the Royal Society, title and subsequent leaf with some chipping to the edges, the latter with some staining, mostly mild marginal browning throughout. Contemporary sheep with blind stamped rules, neatly rebacked. A reply to Thomas White's "An Exclusion of Sceptics from All Title to Dispute", published the same year, which was itself a reply to Glanvill's own "The Vanity of Dogmatizing" (1661, of which this title is a reworking). The book was presented to the Royal Society in December 1664 and Glanvill was elected a member the following week. A Church of England clergyman who had rejected his own family's Puritan beliefs, Glanvill contributed some minor researches to the Society and published widely on science, witchcraft and religion, sparking some lively exchanges of pamphlets, including one with a Puritan minister, Robert Crosse, which led to Crosse composing ".anti-Glanvill ballads to be sung in alehouses" (ODNB). Engraved map (plate size 46 x 55.5 cm) on a single sheet of laid paper (49 x 57.5 cm), hand-coloured in outline, with the title in a cartouche at upper left and a scale at lower left. Very rare engraved map of central Europe by Hugo Allard (1624-1684), father of the prolific Carel Allard, showing Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and parts of France, Denmark, Poland, Hungary, Austria etc. Another, later state of this map is known, signed by Joachim Bormeester (d. 1702) in the cartouche and with added latitudes and longitudes, which is equally rare. "82" [=74], [2] pp. First edition of the journal of the Dutch warship Spiegel, which served as the flagship of Michiel de Ruyter (1607-1676) during an expedition to the coast of Africa, the Caribbean and Newfoundland. At the head of a squadron of twelve ships, the Spiegel had officially been sent to the Mediterranean as a martial exercise against the Barbary pirates. However, its real destination was the coast of West Africa, where the Dutch West India Company (WIC) and the English Company of Royal Adventures were fighting to control the trade in gold and ivory. In an expedition that was secretly planned by anti-English members of the States General, De Ruyter was to recapture the lost African possessions. After a diversion along the Spanish coast, the Dutch set sail to Africa where, aided by local soldiers in service of the WIC, De Ruyter retook all lost possessions. For the next mission, he was ordered to recapture Nieuw-Nederland (the New Netherlands: parts of modern New York, New Jersey and Delaware), which had recently been captured by the English. The squadron sailed … [Click Below for Full Description]

RAPIN, René.
Hortorum libri IV. cum disputatione de cultura hortensi.Paris, Imprimerie Royale (colophon also naming the printer Sébastien Cramoisy), 1665. 4to. With an engraved frontispiece; the engraved arms of Louis XIV on the title-page; 2 engraved armorial headpieces; 5 further engraved headpieces with pictorial scenes; 3 large engraved tailpieces with baroque decoration; 7 engraved decorated initials. Early 18th-century gold-tooled tan calf. [26], 219, [1 blank] pp. First edition of a poem in praise of gardens and garden art in the age of Louis XIV, written in Latin verse in the manner of Virgil's Georgics by the French Jesuit René Rapin (1621-1687), tutor to the children of the dedicatee Guillaume de Lamoignon. Louis XIV began the work of transforming the old royal hunting lodge at Versailles into his royal palace in 1661 and was not to complete the first phase until 1678, so Rapin's work both reflected its influence and influenced both the palace itself and the fashion for garden art internationally. The poem itself is divided into four books, the first devoted primarily to flower gardens in the first decade of the 17th-century, particularly in France under Henry IV and his queen Maria de' Medici. While this book mostly follows tradition concerning the construction of gardens and myths about various flowers themselves, the second book on parks and trees introduces new ideas where the garden becomes a stage that transports one into a formally arranged world of geometrical patterns, mazes and meticulously trimmed hedges to display the gardener's art. Curiously Rapin exempts the oak … [Click Below for Full Description]

[DRAWINGS].
[Grotesque heads].[Germany or the Netherlands?, ca. 1665/85?]. Folio (13 x 21 cm; mounts 40 x 30 cm). 10 grotesque heads drawn in black ink on paper with blue watercolour washes, some with scrollwork decoration and each in a double circle drawn in red pencil (about 16.5 and 18 cm diameter). Each drawing in a passe-partout with a circular window. [10] ll. A set of ten ink drawings with blue washes (light and dark) skilfully executed in a consistent style, each showing a single grotesque head, a few with scrollwork decorations attached. One has devil-like horns that look like they are formed from his own hair, another has ram-like curled horns, many have beards, nearly all have very large ears (sometimes faun-like), some show folds of fat while others are thin, and they show a wide variety of noses and lips (with mouths open or closed, some showing teeth). They may have been drawn as models for architectural or other ornamentation. One can see similar images in Stephen King's Nightmares in the sky: gargoyles and grotesques. Most of the heads are about 14 or 15 cm tall. The grotesque style became popular in the 16th-century, first in Italy and then throughout Europe, influenced in part by the discovery of the Emperor Nero's ca. AD 64 Domus Aurea, with its remarkable frescos. With minor foxing, mostly in the margins but slightly affecting one drawn image: still in very good condition and with the margins only slightly trimmed (retaining all tranchefiles). An excellent set of ten grotesque heads drawn with great skill, artistry and humour. For the general style and its history: F … [Click Below for Full Description]

[MAP - CENTRAL EUROPE]. ALLARD (ALLARDT), Hugo.
Tabula Germaniae.[Amsterdam?, ca. 1665].
