RAYNAUD Theophile
1665 [18 January 1645]. Typographic ornament throughout. 8vo (150 x 97mm). [16], 296, [2]pp. Contemporary vellum, title in MS on spine (vellum a little grubby). Avignon: Iacobi Bramereau, 1665 [18 January 1645]. First edition of this study of the discovery of a miraculously preserved female corpse underneath a cathedral; no copies found in US libraries. Discovered in the vaults of Carpentras Cathedral in Provence, in 1642, the cadaver's extraordinary state of preservation, with no sign of decomposition, is here described by controversial Jesuit theologian Théophile Raynaud (1583-1663) as the consequence of incorruption. Rather than natural causes, deliberate embalming or, indeed, demonic influence, the miraculous state of the body he attributes to divine intervention. Incorruption, or lack of decay was perceived by the Catholic Church to be a symbol of the body's holiness and a promise of resurrection, although in this case Raynaud advises erring on the side of caution -- the corpse should be kept aside in its own chamber and kept an eye on for any changes, to see whether ultimately the woman's soul is heading for damnation, or to Paradise. The discovery of the body was a local sensation, and contemporary accounts credit the intervention of the local bishop and rector with avoiding the outbreak of fanatical foment and further scandal. Raynaud's involvement came after he received a letter from Horace Rollery, a surgeon based in Carpentras who was one of the first to examine the body on its exhumation and who was subsequently keen to consult the 'plus grandes lumières' of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

May's work was a longer and more complete collection of recipes than had appeared before in English, and made use of illustration in a way that had not yet been seen. Cookery was still a closely guarded trade mystery, which May desired to make accessible to all, though admitting that not every reader could afford his most extravagant dishes." Monroe, Comenius and the Beginnings of Educational Reform” Shortly after ‘Janua Linguarum Reserata’ was first published in 1629, it was translated into nearly every European language. In fact, by the 1630s, it was the second most read book in Europe, second only to the Bible. This textbook by Johann Amos Comenius was simply a text of Language, as the English title suggests, “The Door of Languages Unlocked.” ‘Janua’ comprehends the elements of all the sciences and arts – from the origin of words to the mind and its faculties.” (Monroe, 126). It was written with 1,000 short sentences comprising of roughly 8,000 words. In all, there have been over 100 editions of this book printed! Comenius is now remembered as an innovator, who first introduced pictorial textbooks written in native languages rather than Latin. This Elzevier edition was published by Daniel Elzevier after Louis Elzevier’s original 1643 printing. (Willems). It contains the Latin, Greek, and French versions, but does not contain the indices that are in previous editions. (Goldsmid). Item number: #11301 Price: $750 COMENIUS, Johann Amos J.A. FIRST EDITION of Grimaldi's only publication, the discovery of optical diffraction. In this important and celebrated work Grimaldi describes his discovery of the inflection of the solar rays near certain bodies. He was the first to declare that the diffusion of light was instantaneous. The diffraction experiments which Grimaldi describes show "that a new mode of transmission of light had been discovered and that this mode contradicts the notion of an exclusively rectilinear passage of light. Diffraction thus gave prima facie evidence for a fluid nature of light. The name 'diffraction' comes from the loss of uniformity observe … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Béthune's treatise was the work of a man at the end of his career who had served the monarchy at home and abroad through the bumpy years of dynastic transition and who, thanks to his longevity, had witnessed the crisis of the religious wars as well as France's slow rise from the ashes thereafter. He brought to bear his wide knowledge and experience of French government but also his thorough acquaintance with Rome and Italy, and both informed the political ideas he mobilised in his treatise" (Reinhardt, p. 56). Le conseiller d'Etat ran to five editions between 1632 and 1665, testament to its profound influence at the time. AUSTEN, Ralph.
Oxford: Printed by William Hall, for Amos Curteyne, 1665. Oxford: Printed by William Hall, for Amos Curteyne,, 1665. Original trade binding, preserving longitudinal half-title Duodecimo (148 x 95 mm). Contemporary trade sheep, covers ruled in blind. Head of spine and extremities a little worn, sheep stripped in places, pastedowns lifted, contents a little toned, else a very good copy. Third edition, first published in 1653. The third edition includes the text of Austen's observations on Francis Bacon's Sylva Sylvarum, which he had published in 1658. The life of the horticulturist Ralph Austen (1612-1676) was an odd mix of Anabaptist radicalism and gardening. "Austen contributed to three areas which, in the millenarian atmosphere of the period, he saw as a single manifestation of godly 'light and reformation'. He was a practical nurseryman who greatly increased the range and output of gardens in the Oxford area; he was a radical puritan, rejoicing in the overthrow of the Anglican establishment; and he was a self-taught scientist, who regarded horticulture and fruit-growing as the key to establishing the kingdom of heaven on earth. Like other reformers in the circle of Samuel Hartlib, Austen believed that the nation's problems could be solved by a state-sponsored programme of plantations—supplied by his nurseries and guided by his textbooks. His correspondence with Hartlib served to convey messages from London to other Oxford experimentalists, and also to engage influential statesmen on behalf of these schemes and to publicize his research into new crops and methods of prod … [Click Below for Full Description]

Good condition. See pictures. 1665 Greek Septuagint Bible. Old Testament only. Complete as published 755 pages. Darlow & Moule Ref #4701. Printed by John Field. Original brown leather binding with gold gilt. Size: 3" x 5 1/2" X 1 1/2" thick. See pictures. The Greek Old Testament, or Septuagint (from the Latin: septuāgintā, lit. 'seventy'; often abbreviated 70; in Roman numerals, LXX), is the earliest extant Koine Greek translation of books from the Hebrew Bible, various biblical apocrypha, and deuterocanonical books.[1] The first five books of the Hebrew Bible, known as the Torah or the Pentateuch, were translated in the mid-3rd century BCE; they did not survive as original translation texts, however, except as rare fragments.[2] The remaining books of the Greek Old Testament are presumably translations from 200 BCE to 50 CE.[3][4][5] The full title (Ancient Greek: Ἡ μετάφρασις τῶν Ἑβδομήκοντα, lit. 'The Translation of the Seventy') derives from the story recorded in the Letter of Aristeas that the Hebrew Torah was translated into Greek at the request of Ptolemy II Philadelphus (285-247 BCE) by 70 Jewish scholars or, according to later tradition, 72: six scholars from each of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, who independently produced identical translations. The miraculous character of the Aristeas legend might indicate the esteem and disdain in which the translation was held at the time; Greek translations of Hebrew scriptures were in circulation among the Alexandrian Jews.[6] Egyptian papyri from the period have led most scholars to view as probable Aristeas' dating of the tr … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

DU VAL, Pierre.
Paris, 1665. Original outline colour. 365 x 520mm, with a rare letterpress description. A map of Algeria engraved by François Lépine (Lapointe) published as France was taking action against the Barbary Pirates based in Algiers, aided by England. After the pirates had attacked the coast of Provence Louis XIV ordered the Duke of Beaufort to capture the port of Djidjelli and create a European fortress to threaten Algiers. The duke took Djidjelli in July 1664 but had to withdraw in October because an outbreak of plague in Toulon left him without new supplies and reinforcements. Naval action continued: in August 1665 Beaufort captured a corsair ship that had been fitted with the guns he had left behind at Djidjelli. The text sheet, although primarily geographical in purpose, includes a paragraph on the expedition to 'Gigeri'.

Early design for the Galleria Colonna - Egid Schor (Innsbruck 1627-1701 Innsbruck)
(1665). Pen, brown ink and watercolor on paper; Image: 261 x 343 mm; Sheet: 270 x 355 mm; several marginal tears, small marginal losses. This drawing is a copy of a design by Egid Schor, which today locates in Berlin. There exist two comparable copies in Vienna and Munich. Christina Strunck assumes that the Berlin copy is an early design by Egid for the Galleria Colonna, and the other three drawings (including the present one) are „ricordo“ copies which Egid commissioned from his workshop. The Berlin drawing may be one of the earliest designs for the Galleria. It already includes the sirens, the lush draperies, as well as the supporting motifs that were later used in the Galleria Colonna. The present drawing, as well as the two previous designs, confirms Egid’s decisive role in the design of one of the most important Italian ceiling paintings of the 17th century. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Entwurf einer Eckdekoration für das Deckengemälde in der Galleria Colonna. A design by Cortona for the Galleria Pamphilj - Egid Schor (attr.) (Innsbruck 1627-1701 Innsbruck) or Philipp Schor (attr.) (Rome 1646 - 1701 Naples) und after Pietro da Cortona (Cortona 1596-1669 Rome)
ca. 1665. Pen, brown ink and watercolor on paper; 201 x 275mm. The present drawing is a copy after a design by Cortona for the ceiling painting at the Galleria Pamphilj. It is of significant importance as Cortona’s original draft is lost. The design bears important differences regarding the actual fresco. It is a solution for a corner decoration which was not executed in the end. Instead, most of the incorporating themes were used in quite similar compositions at the long side of the fresco. The present drawing suggest that the layout for the fresco was a different one in the beginning, with some similarities to the earlier finished salon ceiling painting at the Palazzo Barberieni. Cortona worked more than three years on the fresco of the Galleria Pamphilj and even drew the wrath of the pope on himself. This long time span could indicate a possible rescheduling of the original layout. As is known, the Galleria Pamphilj was one of the models for the ceiling painting at the Galleria Colonna. In this context, the present drawing could be linked to Egid Schor’s (1627-1701) designs for the Galleria Colonna, which came from the same album. Supposing, the present drawing was made as a template for the Galleria Colonna, Egid as well as Philipp Schor (1646-1701) could be held as potential draftsmen. The collaboration of both for the work at the Galleria Colonna is well documented. Also, the present drawing is definitely comparable to already known works of the two artists. This drawing belongs to a small group of drawings that can be related to the ceiling painting at the Galleria P … [Click Below for Full Description]

*** [English translation available upon request. AUSTEN, Ralph.
Oxford: Printed by William Hall, for Amos Curteyne, 1665. Duodecimo (148 x 95 mm). His correspondence with Hartlib served to convey messages from London to other Oxford experimentalists, and also to engage influential statesmen on behalf of these schemes and to publicize his research into new crops and methods of production. Although the government never rewarded Austen's many appeals, the publication of his Treatise of Fruit-Trees in … [Click Below for Full Description]
