Paris: Jacques Dallin, , 1665. Quarto (252 × 183 mm). Contemporary full calf, raised bands to the spine, compartments gilt with floral lozenges within double ruled panels, presentation gilt stamp to the upper board, "Aux Capuchins de St. Honoré". Engraved map of the topography of the Nile to the text, title page vignette, historiated initials, engraved head- and tailpieces. Light browning, a little rubbed on the boards and chafed on the joints, but a very good copy. First edition, for the first time published separately, previously included in his Pensées of 1634 and 1662, uncommon, just six copies on OCLC, only three of them in the US. Cureau was Louis XIV's doctor, the monarch apparently having been impressed by his ability to judge character from outward appearance. A precursor of Lavater, Cureau's was indeed best known for his work in the area of physiognomy, but he also published on physics - the nature of light, on rainbows - the occult, and philosophy, the final paper here being a study of study of the Divine in Platonic philosophy. The critic Jean Chapelain, his contemporary, said of him; "C'est un excellent philosophe, et dont les écrits sont purs dans le langage, justes dans le dessein, soutenus dans les ornements, et subtils dans les raisonnements." This could perhaps be a presentation copy, as in addition to the gilt supralibros there is an inked inscripton, "Pour les Capucins de St. Honoré" to the title page. The Capuchin convent adjoined the Tuileries gardens. The Blackmer copy with bookplate to the front pastedown.

        LEX REGIA

Uncut, large paper copy bound in later red halfleather with goldlines on spine and large leatherlabel on frontboard. Spine with damage. Kongens geheimearkivar, Frederik Rostgaard, stod for udgivelsen. For at undgå eftertryk lod man loven kobberstikke. Lex Regia, the Danish constitution, was published 44 years after its issue. The model was a magnificent manuscript, written by the code's real author Peder Griffenfeld. In order to avoid reprinting the book was engraved. This way of producing books was well-known abroad but had never before been applied in Denmark. Because of its elaborate typographical get-up it is regarded as a corner-stone in Danish history of the book. The book was limited to c. 500 copies and used as presents for noble people.

Small 4to. (12), 188 pp. With engr. coat of arms of the dedicatee Luis de Vasconcelos e Sousa (1636-1720), 3rd Count of Castelo Melhor. Contemp. sprinkled calf, rebacked with original gold-tooled backstrip laid-down, red sprinkled edges.. Rare first (and only early) edition of Manuel Godinho's account of his return trip from India to Portugal in 1664, particularly important for its observations on India and the Middle East. "Leaving Bassein in 1663, Godinho travelled to Daman and Surat, then sailed to Bandar Abbas, travelled overland to Kung, and then by sea to Basra. Rather than wait for a boat to Baghdad, or a desert caravan, he set off by horse with three companions and three Arabs to Baghdad, then to Ana, Rahab, Thaibe, Aleppo and Alexandretta. After taking a boat to Marseille, he proceeded overland to La Rochelle and there caught another boat to Cascais, at the mouth of the Tagus. His entertaining account of his rush to Europe contains observations of the customs of the Hindus and Muslims, as well as descriptions of the places visited" (Howgego). One of the earliest and most interesting Jesuit accounts of India, a classic of Portuguese travel literature dating from the very end of Portuguese domination of the country, written shortly before Bombay was ceded once and for all to the English in accordance with the Anglo-Portuguese peace treaty of 1661. - An unobtrusive restoration and some spots on the title-page, a single smudge, a few wormholes and evenly browned throughout. A good copy. - Macro 1048. Slot, The Arabs of the Gulf, p. 414. Howgego G54. Lach & Van Kley III, 354. Salva 3777.

Ratsma, Historische plattegronden ... deel 2 Rotterdam, pp. 53-55. The view shows Rotterdam as seen from the Nieuwe Maas with several prominent buildings, including the Prinsekerk, the Grote Kerk, the City Hall, brewery "De Twee Leeuwen" (the two lions), the Oostmanspoort, Schiedamse Poort, Westpoort, etc. The foreground shows the Nieuwe Maas with several ships, including the Eendragt, the flagship of the United Provinces that was lost in the Battle of Lowestoft during the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665).Jacob Quack (ca. 1622-1668), postmaster of Rotterdam, published the view together with an additional map of the Meuse, 6 views of neighbouring cities, an engraved title (in Latin) and a letterpress description of Rotterdam by Joachim Oudaen to form a huge wall map. No surviving copy is known that was assembled at an early date. The present view, arguably the finest 17th-century view of Rotterdam, rarely comes on the market. With some small defects in the paper, but overall in very good condition. A rare large panoramic view of Rotterdam in 1665.

        Artificiall Embellishments

Oxford: printed by William Hall,, 1665. Or Arts best directions How to Preserve Beauty or Procure it. Octavo (147 × 90 mm). Contemporary sheep, ruled in blind, neatly rebacked and relined to style. Ownership inscription of Mrs L. H. Musgrove at head of text and dated 1820 to rear free endpaper. Two leaves (sigs. C2–3) with scorch marks at head, a few marks elsewhere, a very good copy. First and only edition of this manual of cosmetics. The author, Thomas Jeamson (or Jameson) was educated at Wadham College, Oxford, where he became a fellow. He proceeded bachelor of medicine at Oxford 12 October 1664, and doctor of medicine 9 July 1668. He was admitted a Candidate of the College of Physicians, 26 June 1671. He published this work anonymously but his publisher failed to keep the secret, and he was greatly ridiculed in Oxford for it. The text has an interesting selection of recipes for makeup, deodorants, depilatories, shampoos, and remedies for minor ailments, but there is an undeniably comic mismatch between the treatment of pustules and dandruff and the author's adopted tone of high-flown gallantry. A rare book.

This 1665 edition is itself rare with only six copies in ESTC, at the British Library, Harvard, Huntington, University of California Davis Library, University of California W.A. Clark Memorial Library and the Beinecke. There was a Fifth Edition, with additions, in 1684 (British Library, Bristol Central Library, Folger and Yale Sterling Library) and a Sixth Edition published in Bristol in 1764, "by Mr Standfast Smith, Apotheoary, Great Grandson of the Author" (British Library and Yale Seeley G. There is an early ink inscription on the front pastedown by Peter Pickup: "This book has lost two leaves in the later part following the 30 page but yet it is of very great value particularly for the first part". The second part is also rare with only six copies in ESTC (British Library, Harvard, Huntington, University of California Davis, University of California Clark and Beinecke). There was one earlier edition, London 1660 (British Library, Cambridge, Peterborough Cathedral Library, Huntington and Beinecke) and a further edition in 1711 (British Library, Aberdeen University and Bodleian). The two works were also published together in 1665 (Wing S.5213A, Harvard and Clark, noted as imperfect) and 1684 (Wing S.5214, British Library, New York Public Library, Library of Congress, Clark, University of Illinois and Yale Sterling Library). Surriæ Comitatus Continens in Se Oppida Mercatoria VII. Ecclesias Parochiales CXL.

1665 - London: John Overton, c.1665. 385 x 485mm. Narrow margins as issued, otherwise a very good example, dark impression. A close copy of John Norden's map of Surrey, but on a larger scale. It is one of a collection of twelve county maps drawn by William Smith and believed to have been engraved by Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam in 1602-3. On the map Smith has marked the major roads, something which did not become a feature on other county maps until after Ogilby's 'Britannia' in 1675. The other counties were never engraved, possibly because Hondius dropped the project in favour of Speed's atlas. About 1650 the plates came into the possession of Peter Stent, who added 'Printed andd Sould by P.Stent' bottom left; this example comes from the third and final state, with 'Sould by Jo: Overton at the white horse without Newgate neere y fountaine tauern' centre bottom.

In Padova: Per gli Eredi di Paolo Frambotto, , 1665 In Padova: Per gli Eredi di Paolo Frambotto, 1665 First edition of this comprehensive introduction to the principale branches of mathematics, designed for the use of students at the Accademia Delia in Padua. Nineteenth-century half vellum over marbled boards, title in ink on spine. . Quarto. With three folding plates and three folding tables, plus numerous illustrations and tables in the text. Minor wear, some browning and staining in the first few gatherings, ownership signature and notation on title-page partially blotted out at an early date. A very good copy. The Accademia Delia was founded in 1609, in order to provide a mathematical grounding to young noblemen who were training for a military career. Its founder, Pietro Duodo, was a friend of Galileo and when the position of lecturer in mathematics was advertised in 1610, Galileo drew up the curriculum, which was to include basic arithmetic, geometry and stereometry, mechanics (including the use of machines and instruments), artillery, the use of the compass and measuring instruments, perspective, military architecture and fortification and the defence and attack of fortresses.By the time Bonvicino (d. 1667) came to write the present course a half century later, the curriculum had changed in some ways, but remained broadly similar. Here we see six treatises on arithmetic, practical geometry, trigonometry, fortification, the use of artillery spheres, and geography. In the last of these, we find the principal cities and rivers of most European countries and of the known parts of the new world. All that is known, we are told, of California is that it is an island
