More (Henry)
J. Flesher, 1664. FIRST SEPARATE EDITION, woodcut diagram in text, perforated stamp to title (John Crerar Library) and other marks of this provenance, some damp staining, pp. [ii], 45, 8vo, modern calf-backed marbled boards, sound. Although entitled 'an introduction to the whole of Cartesian philosophy', and ostensibly a defence of Descartes against accusations of atheism, the work marks the beginning of More's opposition to mechanistic materialism which later led to his attack on Boyle's hydrostatics. Born at Grantham, the site of Newton's schooldays, More knew Newton well at Cambridge. 'It has long been suspected that the young Newton was much influenced by More and his friends . Koyré has argued that More gave 'to the new science' . some of the most important elements of its metaphysical foundations. Two such ideas are echoed in much of Newton's thought. One was his claim, against the Cartesians, of the existence of an infinite void space. More also objected to the mechanical world of the Cartesians in which bodies moved only under the impact of other bodies' (Gjertsen, Newton Handbook, 369-70). It was Newton's belief in an infinite void which led him to the concept of action at a distance. The work was originally published as an appendix to More's Epistolae quatuor ad Renatum Des Cartes in 'A collection of several philosophical writings' (1662). 'V.C.' has traditionally been identified as the physician, controversial writer and poet William Coward (1657-1725), but other scholars believe that the work is more likely addressed to a Continental correspondent. [PRAETORIUS, Johannes]
Large engraved vignette on title. 16 unnumbered leaves. Small 4to, attractive modern marbled boards. Leipzig: C. Kirchner, n.d [1664 or 1665]. First edition of this most uncommon account of the 1664 comet, visually the most impressive of the 17th century. It was observed by many of the greatest scientists of the period including Cassini and Borelli in Italy, Auzout and Petit in France, Hooke in England, and Samuel Danforth in North America. In this work, Praetorius uses the pseudonym of Johannes Richter, "astrophilo." Praetorius (1630-80), "had an open eye and a sharp ear for all wonder stories, witch tales, and accounts of ghosts and sorcery current among the people. He indefatigably collected all information on remarkable subjects and happenings, and was fond of popular gossip."-Faber du Faur, German Baroque Literature, pp. 199-200-(who describes related items but not this work). The fine and large vignette on the title depicts the course of the comet with the constellations in the background. Praetorius was clearly familiar with the early and contemporary literature on comets and astronomy because of the many references he makes in the text. He describes the appearance, size, and path of the comet. Fine copy. ❧ Lalande, p. 265. Waibler, "Johannes Praetorius (1630-1680).

The last member of that line, Louis of Teck, Patriarch of Aquileia since 1412, died in 1439.On 18 November 1705, John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough was made Prince of Mindelheim by Joseph I, Holy Roman Emperor. Marlborough was invested at an Imperial Diet in Innsbruck on the 24 May 1706. Mindelheim had been bought by an Elector of Bavaria in the 16th century. It was confiscated from Elector Max Emmanuel in 1704 for his treachery, and effectively occupied after the Battle of Blenheim. The King of Prussia, through his representative the prince of Anhalt-Dessau, moved that the title should descend successively to all the heirs of Marlborough?s body. But the princes were opposed. The lack of a male heir would prevent the Churchills becoming hereditary princes of the empire, and was essential to their agreement. Thus no special remainder was provided.Marlborough visited Mindelheim in late May 1713, receiving princely honours from his subjects. But the fate of the principality, and of Marlborough's effective territorial sovereignty, depended upon the ultimate peace treaty. 'THIS FIRST METHODICAL STUDY OF SNAKE VENOM MARKS THE BEGINNING OF EXPERIMENTAL TOXICOLOGY. Redi determined experimentally that, contrary to popular belief, a viper's venom has nothing to do with its bile but was manufactured in two glands and stored in the sheaths concealing the snake's fangs. He studied the effects of snake poison, discovering that it was effective only if injected into the bloodstream, and recommended making a tight ligature above the wound in cases of snakebite to prevent the poison from flowing to the heart' (Norman 1810). * We have compared our copy with a copy at the Lilly Library of Benedetto Castelli's Della misura dell'acque, which is almost identically inscribed by Borelli ( … [Click Below for Full Description]

JUVENALIS, Decimus Junius et FLACCUS, Aulus Persius.
Lugd. Batav et Roterod [Leyde et Rotterdam]: ex officina Hackiana, 1664. In-8; [xvi], 604p. [42p. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

SCHOTT, Gaspar.
FIRST EDITION. This work is a huge compilation of scientific instruments, mechanical technology, and physical curiosities, in fact every aspect of anything technical that Schott could discover. It includes descriptions of Guericke's experiments with the air pump, a very full survey of the history of diving apparatus, a large section on clocks and clockwork, and much else. It gives a very comprehensive account of the state of technology up to the beginning of the Scientific Revolution. As with most of Schott's works, it is richly illustrated.
