Innen die letzten 6 Seiten Register oben mit Wasserfleck, sonst tadellos erhalten./ Inside the last 6 pages register above with waterstain, otherwise in very good condition, perfectly preserved. Dutch Language. Complete. Emanuel van Meteren or Meteeren (6 September 1535 ? 11 April 1612) was a Flemish historian and Consul for "the Traders of the Low Countries" in London. He was born in Antwerp, the son of Sir Jacobus van Meteren, Dutch financier and publisher of early English versions of the Bible, and Ottilia Ortellius, of the famous Ortellius family of mapmakers, and nephew of the cartographer Abraham Ortelius. As a historian Van Meteren was special in that he was not merely a chronicler of the events of his time, but also a powerful and wealthy man who influenced those events. The van Meteren family...had fled the Netherlands for religious reasons. Van Meteren?s father, Jacob, played a key role in the publication of the first English Bible in the 1530s, and the family established itself as a pillar of the Protestant refugee community in London. As an adult, Emmanuel lived on Lime Street, became the consul for the Dutch merchants in London, and occupied the all-important office of postmaster. Reliable mail service was an essential component of any natural history network, since specimens ranging from tulip bulbs to rhinoceros horns needed to circulate between interested naturalists. [WALDENSIANS].
Recit de ce qu'il y a de plus considerable aux affaires des eglises reformées des vallées de Piedmont, depuis les massacres de l'année 1655. [Amsterdam, Abraham Wolfgang(?), after 1663]. 4to. Contemporary wrappers. [4], 60 pp. Rare copy of a pamphlet on the massacre of the Waldensians in Piedmont in 1655. It is probably a second edition as the title-pages mentions: "Jouxte la copie impriméé à Haerlem 1663", though no copies from this previous Haarlem edition are known. The Waldensians are a Christian movement with its origins in the later Middle Ages in France and they were persecuted as heretics from the 12th century onwards. From the early 17th century they were considered as early forerunners of the Reformation. In 1655 the Duke of Savoy commanded the Waldensians of Piedmont to attend Mass or leave in 20 days. The remaining Waldensians were massacred, causing indignation throughout Europe. Some waterstains in the upper margins; wrappers with slightly rubbed edges and spine restored with cello tape. Otherwise a good copy of this rare pamphlet on the Piedmont massacre. Bibliografia Valdese 1672; STCN (1 copy); Tiele, Pamfletten 5035; WorldCat (3 copies); not in Knuttel.

With a woodcut on title page, nearly full-page woodcut on its verso and 2 engraved and 4 woodcut illustrations in the text. 19th-century brown cloth. 48 pp. Rare edition of the famous account of the circumnavigation by Olivier van Noort (1559-1627) in the years 1598 to 1601. Van Noort was the fourth to circumnavigate the globe and the first Dutchman to do so. His predecessors were Magellan, Drake and Cavendish. He left Holland in 1598 with four ships and orders to attack the Spanish and Portuguese and harass them in any way possible. After many adventures Van Noort returned in 1601 with only one ship and only a few dozen of his crew. Those few had survived numerous skirmishes with the Portuguese and Spanish, and attacks by natives at Puerto Deseada and Tierra del Fuego, the former described here as "zeer groot van gestalte" (very large in stature) leading to tales of giants. They suffered from scurvy and survived on penguin meat and ostrich eggs. Van Noort's story was extremely popular and as the first Dutchman to sail round the world he was revered out of national pride, even though his voyage accomplished little. With a 19th-century owner's name on an endleaf and an occasional word underlined. Andries Stokram tells the colourful story of how a fleet of seven East Indiamen on their way back from Batavia got caught in a terrible storm. Four ships sank, only the crew of the Aernhem managing to get away in an open boat. After a week without food they managed to reach Mauritius. "When they were finally taken on board a Dutch privateer, Stokram had been living for eight months the way Robinson Crusoe would a century later, in an environment Daniel Defoe knew from descriptions such as Stokram's" (Nieuwenhuys). Stokram was put a shore on St. Helena and made his way to the Netherlands. Somewhat browned and the fore-edges restored (not touching the text), otherwise in good condition. Knuttel 8758; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 418 note; Nieuwenhuys, Mirror of the Indies, pp. 14-15; STCN (4 copies).

PUTMAN, Eduardus and Abraham Lenertsz VROLINGH.
Putmans manuael, dat is een kleyn pest-boecxken ... gecorrigeert ende vermeerdert ...Antwerp, Marcelis Parijs, 1663 (colophon: 1662). 8vo. Later boards, covered with decorated paper. [2], 71, [8], [1 blank] pp. Third edition of a handbook on the plague, by Eduardus Putman, enlarged and improved by Abraham Lenertsz Vrolingh. The first edition was published in 1603 in Amsterdam, a second in 1646 in Zaandam. The present edition was most likely designed so that it could also be bound with Der matroosen ghesontheyd, an account of scurvy by Vrolingh. In the preface Vrolingh states that by joining the two works both sailor and soldier would benefit from the knowledge.Putmans manuael seeks the cause of the plague in astrology, holding Mercury responsible for the illness in the whole body and other planets for specific regions of the body, such as behind the ears (Saturn and the moon), in the armpits (Mars and the sun) and in the groins (Venus and Jupiter). It also discusses the influence of the four elements: water, fire, earth and air. Other subjects covered are the plague in pregnant women, and a description of various symptoms such as headache, heart palpitations, thirst, fever and diarrhoea, followed by suggested treatments, selected from experience. Most of the medicines (pills and powders) are made from plants and herbs, such as nettle, rhubarb, rosemary and camomile. With the bookplate of Van der Hoeven. Owner's manuscript note on flyleaf. BMN I, p. 209; Dijstelberge, "Plague and print" 1663/8; STCN (3 copies); STCV (1 copy); cf. Krivatsky 9325 (1603, Amsterdam & 1646 Zaanda … [Click Below for Full Description]

Voetius was one of the frontmen of the Dutch Second Reformation. He wrote influential scholastic works (against Arminianism), served as a delegate to the Synod of Dordrecht in 1618/1619 and established himself as a write of practical piety. For thirty-six years, he served as a preacher and pastor in addition to carrying a full teaching load at the Academy of Utrecht as a professor of systematic theology, ethics and church polity. Though he did not create a new theology, Voetius was a competent systematizer who influenced thousands. He was instrumental in training hundreds of ministers who followed him in striving to maintain harmonious union between orthodox doctrine and vital piety. This extensive work contains material on church polity which provides a fine representation of the ecclesiastical ideals of the Dutch Second Reformation.)

DAPPER, Olfert.
1663. First edition of Dapper's renowned account of two VOC trade missions to China, following in the footsteps of Niehof's Gedenkwaerdig bedryf, which described an earlier mission. Dapper details the two embassies, led by Jan van Kampen and Konstantijn Nobel, and Pieter van Hoorn respectively, in the first and second parts. The third part, Dappers general description of China (Beschryving des keizerryks van Taising of Sina) is mentioned on the general title-page, but has its own title-page, pagination and signatures so that it could also be sold separately. The volume further includes an account of Balthasar Bort's expedition along the coast of southern China (1663-1664).Bookplate and bookseller's ticket on paste-down. Some browning, some plates reinforced, the title-page slightly dirty. The binding in good condition, but the front hinge cracked and the binding structure visible between frontispiece and title-page. A celebrated work on China, well-illustrated.l Cordier, Sinica, col. 2348; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 544; Lust 507; Tiele, Bibl. 304. [Attributes: First Edition]

Vossius, Isaac
Ex Typographia Adriani Vlacq, Hagae-Comitis [The Hague], 1663. FIRST EDITION, 4to, pp. [xii], 123, [1]. Contemporary vellum, boards bordered in gilt with a central gilt tool. Lightly toned and soiled. Rebacked to style, hinges neatly relined, boards soiled and marked, ties lost. One of Vossius's 'more scientific tracts. [which] attracted considerable attention among his contemporaries' (ODNB): he sought to explain the motion of the tides, a question of increasing interest, with reference to the heat of the sun exclusively, instead of the stars, the moon, or other forces. At the end he also discusses the use of a mercury barometer for predicting storms at sea. The following decade the text was translated into English to help it reach a wider audience.
