Uppsala, H. Curio, 1664. 8:o. (6),98 s. Interfolierad. Bakre inre falsen sprucken men häftningen håller ihop. Titelbladet lite solkigt.

CASSINI, Giovanni Domenico.
First editions of these two exceptionally rare Cassini publications on the comet of 1664-5. Cassini observed the comet "in the presence of Queen Christina [to whom the first work is dedicated] and formulated on this occasion a new theory (in agreement with the Tychonian system) in which the orbit of the comet is a great circle whose center is situated in the direction of Sirius and whose perigee is beyond the orbit of Saturn." (DSB).<br/><br/> Cassini's detailed observations of the comet were made with a powerful new telescope. "Through his friendship with the famous Roman lensmakers Giuseppe Campani and Eustachio Divini, Cassini, beginning in 1664, was able to obtain from them powerful celestial telescopes of great focal length. He used these instruments-very delicate and extremely accurate for the time- with great skill, and made within several years a remarkable series of observations..." (ibid). In the preface to the work Cassini describes the telescopes, and the first observations made with them.<br/><br/> The large engraved plate depicts the course of the comet in the southern celestial hemisphere from December 13 1664 through the middle of January of 1665. It also shows the appearance and direction of the comet's tail in a series of nightly dated observations. <br/><br/> The great comet of 1664-5 was observed my many astronomers, including Auzout, Borelli, Fabri, Hooke, Hevelius, and Petit.<br/><br/> The second work, addressed to the archaeologist Falconieri, presents further observations on the comet, and Cassini remarks about the observations made by Auzout and Hev … [Click Below for Full Description]

Levanto, Francesco Maria
Genoa: Francesco Maria Levanto, 1664. unbound. very good(+). Sea chart. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 15.75" x 20.5". This incredible 1664 map of Corfu, the second largest Greek Island in the Ionian Sea, was issued by Captain Francesco Maria Levanto. The maritime map or sea chart includes the islands of Corfu, Paxi and the western coast of Greece with north oriented towards the left. Numerous rhumb lines, coastal features, depth soundings, anchorages, shoals, and banks surrounding the islands are noted and serve as a useful guide to the mariner. The island of Corfu was known to be the bulwark of the European States against the Ottomans and was one of the most fortified places in Europe. The Old Venetian Fortress of Corfu (la Citta di Corfu), identified here, successfully repulsed the major Ottoman sieges of 1537, 1571 and 1716. This map appeared in Levanto's "Prima parte dello specchio del mare..." (Mirror of the Sea). The atlas was largely based on the work of Anthonie Jacobz and later Pieter Goos (who bought the plates from Jacobz in 1650). Levanto's atlas is the Italian translation and was one of the earliest Italian nautical atlases. The map is in good condition with minor aging along edges. Paper is clean and bright. Increasingly rare Italian map and a fine example of Levanto's work.

"This is the first edition of the earliest extant bibliography of bibliographies (despite the 'curis secundis auctior' on the title). It is basically an alphabetical list, arranged by authors' first names, followed by eight intricate subject indices, among them one of publishers' and booksellers' catalogues. Appended is a very useful numismatic bibliography. The work enjoyed three later editions during the seventeenth century and provided the basis for Teissier...Labbé (1607-67), one of the most learned polymaths of his time, was a Jesuit professor of philosophy in Paris."-Grolier Club, Bibliography, 62.
