Titlepage +(14pp Preface) +(12pp To Reader) +637pp. BOUND WITH THESES seu Assertiones Catholicae de Incarnatione .. (same publisher & date with further titlepages) Titlepage +[22pp] +Titlepage +[6pp] +Titlepage +[17pp] +154pp (recte 156). Art Nouveau bookplate of Haut on pastedown and slightly faded name at top margin of title. Endpapers earlier than the rebinding, as they and the first few preliminaries have matching worming but all but one single hole have disappeared by the first page of text. The last two leaves of the end of the second item have one worm hole in the gutter margin. There is some foxing & browning but the paper is supple and strong and entirely readable and there are no tears or signs of use. *This is the second Latin translation of Pascale's work written to defend the Jansenists from the attacks of the Jesuits and which has the additional Theses bound in. As with the French edition, so also this Latin translation of Pascal's was condemned by Pope Alexander the seventh and supposed to be Publicly burnt. It was psudonymously translated from the French into Latin for wider dissemination at Port-Royal (ee also PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN 140).

Under sin tid som militär i Jämtland blev han alltmer upptagen av religiösa frågeställningar och kom till slutsatser som utmanade kyrkans officiella hållning. Han kallades därför 1663 till förhör inför domkapitlet i Härnösand där i synnerhet hans relation till den religiöse tänkaren och pacifisten Paul Felgenhauer (1593-ca 1677) synades i sömmarna. I förhören var Kempe försiktig, men när han året därpå befann sig i landsflykt i Amsterdam var han mer frispråkig. I "Probatorium" förnekar Felgenhauer treenigheten och i efterord och kommentarer passar Kempe själv på att angripa bl.a. prästerskapet. About a dozen pages with marginal worm track disappearing into a single marginal hole, one marginal tear without loss and the last page with small cut corner no loss to printed area. *A practical marriage guide laid out in short pity advice and interspersed with short stories from examples including historical unhappy marriages of saints. The author seems to have been slightly unusual in Jesuit circles in having also written another practical book advising that buckling down to work with your hands is also a way to salvation.

Fioriture, bruniture e aloni sparsi; velature a lavori di tarlo non lesivi del testo presenti alle prime decine di cc. Printer's device on title, elaborate ornamental woodcut head-pieces incorporating medallion of the royal arms, large historiated initials. Contemporary calf, with royal arms in gilt on front and back cover. Two works collected together. The second work, Les Stratagesmes de Frontin, (p347) has an additional short treatise De la Bataille des Romains (pp497-512). The books consist mainly of proverbs and sayings attributed to the Greeks, Romans and Spartans; philosophers notably are cited and various famous individuals; some short tales are included where a particularly apt or pithy comment has concluded a dialogue. Nicolas Perrot (1606-64) was a translator and man of letters, noted for the excellence of his style; his free method of translating was applauded for capturing the essence of the writer. Deux tableaux gravés, un en fin de chaque volume, fournissent une vue synoptique du contenu. L'ouvrage fut mis à l'index en 1677. Victorinus Bythner (?1605 - ?1670) was born in Poland but took up residence in Oxford in the 1630s and lectured on Hebrew at Christ Church.
