BECKER (VON HERVORD), Peter.
Rare Dutch translation of a work on fortification giving a very detailed description of the mathematical problems encountered in designing and building fortifications. It was originally published in German in 1664 by the German military engineer Peter Becker. The translation is dedicated to Prince William Hendrik of Nassau. The engraved title-page shows workmen with tools and plans facing a female figure, while a child or putto and an ape sit drawing. The ape may be a joke alluding to the informal Dutch name for a pantograph, which translates as "drawing ape".A very good copy. Jordan 0208 (5 copies); Hoogendoorn BEKP01D (6 copies, incl. 1 incomplete); Sloos, Warfare 08049; STCN (3 of the same copies); cf. Jähns, p. 1207.

Francesco Maria LEVANTO (Attivo intorno al 1664)
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Francesco Maria LEVANTO (Attivo intorno al 1664)
The Martyrs of Gorkum were a group of nineteenth Dutch Catholics who were hanged on the 9th July 1572. They were hung in the town of Brielle during the sixteenth century religious wars, by militant Dutch Calvinists. The event that led directly to these events was the Dutch Revolt against the Spanish rule. In 1572, the Netherlands were in open revolt against the Spanish rule, and there was internal rivalry in the country within the Protestants denominations, with the Calvinists eventually suppressing the Lutherans. In June, Gorkum fell, and nine Franciscans were captured by rebels, as well as two lay brothers from the same friary, and the parish priest and his assistant. Later, more people were added to those captures. They were transferred to Brielle, and on the journey the nineteen were exhibited to the curious for money. They were all interrogated … [Click Below for Full Description]

VERMAARSCH, Joost.
Richly illustrated second edition of an architectural manual compiled by a master mason, first published in 1664 (the first edition was also reissued in 1667). Although the title-page calls it the first volume, Vermaarsch never published a second. He openly borrows from architectural classics, naming Scamozzi, Palladio and Viniola on his title-page. He discusses mathematical projection, architectural decoration, the five orders of columns of classical architecture, and more specifically the theories of Scamozzi, Palladio and Vignola, each treated in a separately paginated chapter. As a practicing master mason in Leiden the author's views are of special interest when he discusses the design of decorative brick and plaster work for bases and capitals of columns for doors, gateways, windows, etc., freezes, ceilings and other works of masonry. He notes that all these designs can be constructed with only the very simplest measuring tools. The plates clearly illustrate his points and provide numerous models for brick and plaster decorations. Very good copy with generous margins, with printed memorial label on the pastedown, stating that the book was presented to the mathematical society "Mathesis Scientiarum Genetrix" after Isaac La Lau's 1849 death by his son J.G. La Lau. Both were leading members of the society.l Bierens de Haan 5021; Cat. Rijksmuseum III, p. 22; STCN (5 copies); cf. Berlin Kat. 2225 (1667 issue of 1664 ed.); not in BAL.

[DRAWING – OTTOMAN PORT]. [PEETERS, Johannes (Jan) (after)].
A detailed ink drawing of the harbour of and fortifications of Edremit, an Ottoman port city on the west coast of Turkey. The drawing is made after Johannes Peeter's print Ladimistri nel' archipelago, originally engraved by Lucas Vorsterman the younger and first appearing 1664/65 in the series Diverse vis te[!] delli Dardaneli del' dtrecio come delle città e castelli nel archipelago. The series was published by Jacob (Jacques) Peeters (1637-1695), and the prints were engraved after drawings by his brother Jan (Johannes) Peeters (1625-1677), best known for his drawings of city views engraved by Merian. Johannes Peeters was a pupil of their eldest brother Bonaventura Peeters, a well-known painter and draughtsman, and specialized in maritime scenes.Slightly browned and with a few small and mostly marginal stains. The foremost canon appears to have lost some of its ink, but the drawing is otherwise in good condition. The corners are damaged or discoloured from a previous mounting, far outside the border of the drawing.
