Antoine BIET
First edition. Contemporary brown calf, spine in six compartments with blind-ruled compartments and gilt fleurons, remains of a manuscript title label. All edges speckled red, binding skillfully restored. Tear to lower margin of title skillfully restored, a few tiny stains.  The work is divided into three parts: the first relates the establishment of the colony and its journey to Cayenne, the second is a collection of observations on the 15 months spent there by the author and the last is concerned with the country's climate, the fertility of the soil, and the customs and dress of the indigenous peoples. A last part is made up of a Franco-Amerindian dictionary, which is the very first appearance of a lexicon of the Galibi language. Some chapters also refer to Guadeloupe, Barbados and Martinique.Chaplain to the 700 colonists of the expedition sent to Guyana on the 18th May 1652, Antoine Biet gives a precise account of the second attempt at colonization. The attempt failed, and the hundred surviving colonists were forced to flee Cayenne for Surinam in January 1654 (and from there to Barbados), having suffered tropical illness and fierce resistance from the Galibi Indians. According to Boucher de La Richarderie, "no account other than Biet's sheds so much light on the natives of Guyana; he describes them in all their primitive simplicity. The vocabulary of their language is carefully assembled," (Bibliothèque universelle des voyages, 1808).Manuscript ex-libris on front endpaper: "Ce livre appartient à Mr. Adam de Saron [This book belongs to Mr Adam de Saron]."  Chez François C … [Click Below for Full Description]

PEETERS, Johannes (Jan) (after)].
1664. A detailed ink drawing of the harbour of and fortifications of Edremit, an Ottoman port city on the west coast of Turkey. The drawing is made after Johannes Peeter's print Ladimistri nel' archipelago, originally engraved by Lucas Vorsterman the younger and first appearing 1664/65 in the series Diverse vis te[!] delli Dardaneli del' dtrecio come delle città e castelli nel archipelago. The series was published by Jacob (Jacques) Peeters (1637-1695), and the prints were engraved after drawings by his brother Jan (Johannes) Peeters (1625-1677), best known for his drawings of city views engraved by Merian. Johannes Peeters was a pupil of their eldest brother Bonaventura Peeters, a well-known painter and draughtsman, and specialized in maritime scenes.Slightly browned and with a few small and mostly marginal stains. The foremost canon appears to have lost some of its ink, but the drawing is otherwise in good condition. The corners are damaged or discoloured from a previous mounting, far outside the border of the drawing.

waesberge amsterdam, 1664. Third volume only of this important work, previously owned by the Guinness family,Mariga (the former Princess Marie Gabrielle of Urach. Present to her son Patrick. Velum cover. "Socinianism: “sulcken schrikkelijcken ende grouwelicken qua- edt” [this terrible and dreadful evil] No single movement has been as controversial in seventeenth-century Europe as Socinianism, named after the Italians Lelio (1525-62) and Fausto Sozzini (1539-1604). 1 In the eyes of established Christendom this radical- liberal strand of Protestantism was an unprecedented theological and socio- political menace. This was not only the case in Poland, where until their expulsion in 1658 the Socinians had their spiritual and administrative center in Raków, but also, and especially, in those countries where Socinianism was favorably received: in Germany, in the Dutch Republic, and in England. 2 Socinians (they called themselves “Brothers” or “Christians”, and after 1650 “Unitarians” or “Polish brethren”) were strongly rationalistic. Faith should be consistent with reason; believing was a matter of assensus (consent) rather than fiducia (trust); although the Holy Scriptures contained truths that were supra rationem (beyond reason), these were not contra rationem (contrary to reason). Dogmas of which the biblical foundation was considered doubtful were rejected, i.e. those of the Trinity, the divinity of Christ and of the Holy Spirit, original sin, unfree will, expiation, infant baptism, God’s foreknowledge ( praescientia ) and predestination ( praedestinatio ), a life in Hell afte … [Click Below for Full Description]

[PEETERS, Johannes (Jan) (after)].
