Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg.
Amsterdam: c1664. Size: 530 x 380 mm. Fine condition Copper engraving. Original colour. An attractive map of Kent by the famous Dutch cartographer Blaeu. This English county map is highly decorative with figurative cartouches and heraldic family coats of arms as well as ships on the sea. The map is very detailed and gives many place names, smaller villages or settlements. Rivers, lakes, mountains and woods are also indicated. Jan Blaeu (1596-1673) was a son of a famous Dutch cartographer, Willem Janzoon Blaeu, and he shared his father's passion and continued his work. His Atlas Maior is one of the most extraordinary work within this category ever produced. It is known for its exquisite engraving, calligraphy and colouring as well as heraldic detail, pictorial work and the intricate cartouches, which all amounted to the appeal of this work. In fact it is argued that some of the maps produced by Jan were considered to be the finest published anywhere in the seventeenth century.

WILLIS, Thomas.
London; Strasbourg: Typis Ja. Flesher, Impensis Jo. Martyn & Ja. Allestry; Eberhard Welpen, 1664. First edition. First edition, an exceptionally fine copy in contemporary armorial binding, and with outstanding provenance, of the "most complete and accurate account of the nervous system which had hitherto appeared, and the work that coined the term 'neurology'" (GM). "With this contribution, [Willis] was entitled to be a member of the notable group of seventeenth-century anatomists that included Valsalva, Malpighi, Leeuwenhoek, and others" (Lilly). "Dissatisfied with the imperfect and fragmentary descriptions in earlier accounts of the brain, Willis devised a comprehensive and comparative program of brain dissections, which he carried out with the aid of his pupils Christopher Wren, Richard Lower and Thomas Millington -- one of the earliest examples of collaborative scientific research in England. Willis classified and described ten pairs of cranial nerves, six of which are still recognized, and was the first to grasp the physiological significance of the "circle of Willis," the circle of anastomosed arteries at the base of the brain by which full circulation to all parts of the brain can be maintained even when the carotid or vetebral arteries are blocked. From his observations of animal brains, Willis hypothesized that the convolutionary complexity of the human cerebral cortex is correlated with man's superior intelligence, and that the cerebellum, a similar structure in all animals, is the source of involuntary action. Willis also coined the term "neurology," which made i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antoine BIET
First edition. Contemporary brown calf, spine in six compartments with blind-ruled compartments and gilt fleurons, remains of a manuscript title label. All edges speckled red, binding skillfully restored. Tear to lower margin of title skillfully restored, a few tiny stains.  The work is divided into three parts: the first relates the establishment of the colony and its journey to Cayenne, the second is a collection of observations on the 15 months spent there by the author and the last is concerned with the country's climate, the fertility of the soil, and the customs and dress of the indigenous peoples. A last part is made up of a Franco-Amerindian dictionary, which is the very first appearance of a lexicon of the Galibi language. Some chapters also refer to Guadeloupe, Barbados and Martinique.Chaplain to the 700 colonists of the expedition sent to Guyana on the 18th May 1652, Antoine Biet gives a precise account of the second attempt at colonization. The attempt failed, and the hundred surviving colonists were forced to flee Cayenne for Surinam in January 1654 (and from there to Barbados), having suffered tropical illness and fierce resistance from the Galibi Indians. According to Boucher de La Richarderie, "no account other than Biet's sheds so much light on the natives of Guyana; he describes them in all their primitive simplicity. The vocabulary of their language is carefully assembled," (Bibliothèque universelle des voyages, 1808).Manuscript ex-libris on front endpaper: "Ce livre appartient à Mr. Adam de Saron [This book belongs to Mr Adam de Saron]."  Chez François C … [Click Below for Full Description]

PEETERS, Johannes (Jan) (after)].
1664. A detailed ink drawing of the harbour of and fortifications of Edremit, an Ottoman port city on the west coast of Turkey. The drawing is made after Johannes Peeter's print Ladimistri nel' archipelago, originally engraved by Lucas Vorsterman the younger and first appearing 1664/65 in the series Diverse vis te[!] delli Dardaneli del' dtrecio come delle città e castelli nel archipelago. The series was published by Jacob (Jacques) Peeters (1637-1695), and the prints were engraved after drawings by his brother Jan (Johannes) Peeters (1625-1677), best known for his drawings of city views engraved by Merian. Johannes Peeters was a pupil of their eldest brother Bonaventura Peeters, a well-known painter and draughtsman, and specialized in maritime scenes.Slightly browned and with a few small and mostly marginal stains. The foremost canon appears to have lost some of its ink, but the drawing is otherwise in good condition. The corners are damaged or discoloured from a previous mounting, far outside the border of the drawing.

waesberge amsterdam, 1664. Third volume only of this important work, previously owned by the Guinness family,Mariga (the former Princess Marie Gabrielle of Urach. Present to her son Patrick. Velum cover. "Socinianism: “sulcken schrikkelijcken ende grouwelicken qua- edt” [this terrible and dreadful evil] No single movement has been as controversial in seventeenth-century Europe as Socinianism, named after the Italians Lelio (1525-62) and Fausto Sozzini (1539-1604). 1 In the eyes of established Christendom this radical- liberal strand of Protestantism was an unprecedented theological and socio- political menace. This was not only the case in Poland, where until their expulsion in 1658 the Socinians had their spiritual and administrative center in Raków, but also, and especially, in those countries where Socinianism was favorably received: in Germany, in the Dutch Republic, and in England. 2 Socinians (they called themselves “Brothers” or “Christians”, and after 1650 “Unitarians” or “Polish brethren”) were strongly rationalistic. Faith should be consistent with reason; believing was a matter of assensus (consent) rather than fiducia (trust); although the Holy Scriptures contained truths that were supra rationem (beyond reason), these were not contra rationem (contrary to reason). Dogmas of which the biblical foundation was considered doubtful were rejected, i.e. those of the Trinity, the divinity of Christ and of the Holy Spirit, original sin, unfree will, expiation, infant baptism, God’s foreknowledge ( praescientia ) and predestination ( praedestinatio ), a life in Hell afte … [Click Below for Full Description]
