Digby, Kenelm.
Frankfurt/Main, Balthasar Christoph Wust, 1664. (2), 123, (7) SS. (2), 82, (6) SS. "In 1657 his increasingly poor health led Digby to take the waters at Montpellier, where he gave his famous account of the 'powder of sympathy', which cured wounds by being rubbed on the weapon that inflicted them. It was a strong solution of vitriol (copper sulfate) in rainwater, which could be improved by drying in the sun and by mixture with gum tragacanth" (DSB IV, 95). "The discourse on the powder of sympathy, one of the most famous of Digby's productions" (Ferguson VI, 22), erschien zuerst 1658 in Paris (in französischer Sprache), dann im selben Jahr in London auf Englisch und hernach in der Übersetzung von H. Hupka auf Deutsch. Biet, Antoine
1664. Paris. Francois Clousier. 4to (230 x 170 mm). 1 [blank], 12 ff., 432, 1 [blank]. Excellent contemporary calf, raised bands to spine, lettered and tooled in gilt, gently worn. Scattered foxing and light browning, else fine.- First edition. In 1652 Father Biet sailed towards Cayenne to visit the French settlement under the command of Royville (and most immediately the Abbe de L' Isle-Marivault, although he never reached his destination, leaving Biet as head of the Spiritual mission), the expedition consisted of 600 men. During his time abroad Biet made trips to Barbados, Martinique and Guadalupe. The work is divided into three parts: the first deals with the journey to Cayenne and the French settling of the colony; the second with the 15 months of the duration of the expedition, the richest in details on the experiences of the settlers; and the third with the natural history, fertility of the land, and ethnological aspects of the natives, their costumes, language and manners. On pp. 339 - 432 there is a dictionary of the Galibi language. The work is rather hard to find, and much sought after as a fundamental source of information, virtually unparalleled by contemporaneous reports. Leclerc, 165. Sabin, 5269. Chadenat, 18. JCB, 664/15.

[GASTRONOMY - CARVING].
Bibliotheca Gastronomica 6508 (4 copies); Bitting p. 530; Landwehr, Ned. Kookboek, 17.2 (this issue) & 17 (1664 issue); STCN (4 copies). Rare first edition of a charming little book on carving at the table, describing and illustrating the more refined ways of carving, the order of serving, and the handling of food: poultry, hare, rabbit, pork, veal, lamb, mutton, venison, ham, lobster, fish, artichokes, cakes and sweet and savoury pies. It is one of the best and most extensively illustrated early books on culinary carving. The frontispiece shows a gentleman at dinner, with his servant carving a fowl in the Italian manner, where one holds it aloft with the fork and carves it in mid-air for all to see. The anonymous author, in the preface, notes that this is not the normal manner in the Netherlands, so he discusses both it and the normal manner of carving on a platter. The plates illustrate several carving techniques and include a large folding plate with forks and carving knifes. The book appeared 13 years before Joseph Moxon's better known deck of cards with illustrated carving instructions. With early owner's initials. With a tear in the folding plate repaired but otherwise in very good condition, with only an occasional minor stain or smudge. The slipcase is somewhat rubbed, but the binding itself is in fine condition. A rare and charming handbook of culinary carving, clearly and extensively illustrated.

One of the foundations of neuroanatomy, and the birthplace of the term "neurology." Dissatisfied with the imperfect and fragmentary descriptions in earlier accounts of the brain, Willis devised a comprehensive and comparative program of brain dissections, which he carried out with the aid of his pupils Christopher Wren, Richard Lower and Thomas Millington. Willis classified and described ten pairs of cranial nerves, six of which are still recognized, and was the first to grasp the physiological significance of the "circle of Willis," the circle of anastomosed arteries at the base of the brain by which full circulation to all parts of the brain can be maintained even when the carotid or vetebral arteries are blocked. From his observations of animal brains, Willis hypothesized that the convolutionary complexity of the human cerebral cortex is correlated with man's superior intelligence, and that the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. Bije M. De [After M. Gerards the elder]
Amsterdam, Nicolaes Visscher, 1664. 16 engravings, each measuring ca. 15.0 x 11.7 cm (size of the printing plates, excluding 2-4 cm margin), and passe-partouts of ca. 28 x 26 cm. They are numbered 1-16 in the lower right corner outside the printed area. The first engraving with title inscription, date, and the names of the illustrator, engraver, and publisher. A complete suite of sixteen detailed and lively images of a brown bear (Ursus arctos) in a natural landscape and in different positions: walking, eating, drinking, sleeping, etc., seen from various angles. The images were engraved by Marcus de Bije [or De Bye] (1612-1670) after etchings by the Flemish painter and engraver Marcus Gerards (or Gheeraerts) the Elder, who lived from ca. 1520 to about 1590. Gerards was among the first engravers in the Low Countries to experiment with etching techniques. This seems to be the second state, fide Hollstein, 61-76: the title page carrying both the year 1569 for Gerard's design, and 1664 for De Bije's engraving. This suite was published by Nicolaes Visscher in Amsterdam (spelled Nicolaus Visscher on the first plate). All the plates are framed (one frame being slightly larger); some images have a circular stamp on the verso, slightly shining through. Otherwise the images are clean and generally quite strong. In all, still a good, very rare, and attractive suite. Bartsch I.86.61; Hollstein 61 II. Very good.
