DESCARTES, René.
Paris: Michel Bobin & Nicolas le Gras, 1664. First edition, an exceptionally large copy (10 mm wider than the Norman copy), of Descartes' first account of his influential system of physics based upon vortices, written in the early 1630s. His great achievement was to develop a system of physics based on a simple theory of matter and a few simple laws - very similar to Newton's laws of motion - which also allowed him to account for all the known properties of light. "Descartes's first attempt to explain the formation of the physical world was composed during the 1630s but suppressed, like L'Homme, after Galileo's condemnation. In it Descartes gave his account of cosmogony strictly in terms of matter in motion, making the laws of motion the ultimate 'laws of nature' and all scientific explanation thus ultimately mechanistic" (Norman 629). "Descartes' achievement in the Treatise on Light [i.e. Le Monde] is two-fold. In the first place, his vortex theory explains the stability of planetary orbits in a way that presents an intuitively plausible picture of orbital motion which requires no mysterious forces acting at a distance: the rapid rotation of the Sun at the centre of our solar system, through its resultant centrifugal force, causes the 'pool' of second matter to swirl around it, holding planets in orbits as a whirlpool holds bodies in a circular motion around it. Moreover, it explains this motion in terms of fundamental quantifiable physical notions, namely centrifugal force and the rectilinear tendencies of moving matter. In other words, the heliocentric theory is derived … [Click Below for Full Description]

Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 184 … [Click Below for Full Description]

GIRAFFI, Alessandro
London : Printed for R. Lowndes ., 1664. - 1664 History of Masaniello Revolt in Naples Italy Giraffi English Habsburg Spain A fine English translation of Alessandro Giraffi’s “An Exact History of the Late Revolutions in Naples.” This first-hand account of the revolt against Habsburg Spain in Naples in 1647. Masaniello, a local Italian fisherman, led a revolt which ransacked armories and prisons in Naples – a historical event that has been retold, painted, and argued for centuries. Masaniello was described as, ".a young man of twenty-seven, beautiful and graceful in appearance, his face was brown and somewhat burned by the sun: black eyes, blond hair, with locks that ran down his neck." (St. John., 68) This fine book, finely rebound in Moroccan red leather, includes a full-page woodcut portrait of Masaniello. This book is considered very rare. The translator, James Howell, was the ‘author of the most curious volumes in English literature’ (Hawkins, Library Catalog, 1990) Item number: #602 Price: $950 GIRAFFI, Alessandro An exact history of the late revolutions in Naples; and of their monstrous successes : not to be parallel'd by any ancient or modern history.
