A newly discovered design for the ceiling painting at the Galleria Colonna - Egid Schor (Innsbruck 1627-1701 Innsbruck)
1664. Design for the ceiling painting at the Galleria Colonna. Pen, black ink and watercolor on two pieces of paper mounted together 252 x 448mm. Johann Paul Schor (1615-1674) was engaged as a painter of the Galleria Colonna. From 1665 he frescoed the complete north side of the vault. His son Philipp was also involved in the elaboration of the fresco. The present newly discovered drawings prove that Johann Pauls brother Egid Schor was likewise involved in the execution. Thus, the north side of the ceiling painting in the Galleria Colonna were obviously a joint project of the Schor family. Egid Schor came from a well-known Tyrolian artist family. He was the elder brother of Johann Paul and followed him to Rome. In his Roman years, Egid worked with Johann Paul on several projects, for example at the Quirinal Palace and the Villa Chigi in Formello. He came in contact with Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Pietro da Cortona and was able to study the work of Andrea Pozzo. In 1665, he returned home. During the following years he worked as a decoration painter in Salzburg, Linz, Vienna, Munich, Nuremberg and Augsburg. After Egids return to Innsbruck, Charles V, Duke of Lorraine appointed him court painter. Due to the transfer of illusionistic ceiling painting from Italy to his homeland, Egid Schor is considered the founder of Baroque ceiling painting in Tyrol. Johann Paul Schor first studied with his father, settled in Rome in 1640 and became a pupil of Pietro da Cortona (1596-1669) and Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680). In 1654 Schor became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Della Porta Giovanni Battista
Amstelodami, apud Elizeum Weyerstraten, 1664. Cm. 13, pp. (16) 670 (22). Cfr. Iccu; Riccardi, II, 307: "Bella edizione"; Brunet, IV, 826: "assez jolies"; Graesse, V, 417; Ferguson, II, 216; Caillet, 8851. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

RUYTER, Michiel de.
Knuttel, Pamfletten 9100; Tiele, Pamfletten 5262; cf. Koelmans, De reis van Michiel Adriaanszoon de Ruyter in 1664-1665. First edition of the journal of the Dutch warship Spiegel, which served as the flagship of Michiel de Ruyter (1607-1676) during an expedition to the coast of Africa, the Caribbean and Newfoundland. At the head of a squadron of twelve ships, the Spiegel had officially been sent to the Mediterranean as a martial exercise against the Barbary pirates. However, its real destination was the coast of West Africa, where the Dutch West India Company (WIC) and the English Company of Royal Adventures were fighting to control the trade in gold and ivory. In an expedition that was secretly planned by anti-English members of the States General, De Ruyter was to recapture the lost African possessions. After a diversion along the Spanish coast, the Dutch set sail to Africa where, aided by local soldiers in service of the WIC, De Ruyter retook all lost possessions. For the next mission, he was ordered to recapture Nieuw-Nederland (the New Netherlands: parts of modern New York, New Jersey and Delaware), which had recently been captured by the English. The squadron sailed to the Caribbean, where they captured sixteen English merchant ships. They abandoned plans to conquer the New Netherlands, perhaps for fear that it might be defended by a powerful English fleet, so after damaging the English fishery near Newfoundland, De Ruyter triumphantly returned home to the Netherlands. With a description from a French-language bookseller's catalogue mounted on the inside of the cover. … [Click Below for Full Description]

1664. Amsterdam Blaeu, [c.1664]. Original hand-coloured engraving. Plate Size: 48.7 cm x 38.6 cm. Sheet Size: 65.2 cm x 55.7 cm. Original map. In very good, clean condition. Wide margins. Latin text on reverse. [Koeman II, 1803:2.]. From: J. Blaeus Grooten Atlas, oft Werelt- Beschryving, in welcke 't Aerdryck, de Zee, en Hemel, wort vertoont en beschreven. Amsterdam, J. Blaeu, 1664. (Van der Krogt 2, 621). Beautiful map of mid-17th Century Russia published during the reign of Tsar Alexis of Russia, of the Romanov Dynasty, as Moscow vied for regional hegemony with the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and Sweden. 'Mosqua' (Moscow) is in the lower right corner. Smolesnsk is just squeezed in within the maps lower border. Novogorod can be seen just below the outflow of Lake Ilmen. In the upper left lies Estonia and the Gulf of Finland. Below this is the 'Livonia' region which is now between Latvia and Estonia. The regions listed as 'Ingria' and 'Careliae Pars' on the map were then under the control of the Swedes. The Russians would eventually seize this territory and dominance of the Baltic and build their new capital St. Petersburg there. This lay in the future. The map's political delineation shows the westward extent of Moscow's reach. 'Lithva' in the lower left of the map was then within the territory of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This region is now modern-day Belarus: 'Witespk' is now the Belarussian city of Viciebsk. Relief depicted pictorially and the historic place-names are in Latin. The final sentence concludes: "men begint een swaer hooft met Englant te hebben" (one begins to get sick and tired of England).Lacking the last blank, but otherwise in very good condition and wholly untrimmed.

Tabernaemontanus, Jacobus Theodorus.
Basel Werenfels für König, 1664. (38 x 23 cm). (14) 663 S.; 1 Bl., SS. 665-676, 1 Bl., SS. 677-1529, 66 Bll. [Click Below for Full Description]

Francesco Maria LEVANTO (Attivo intorno al 1664)
[Click Below for Full Description]

BECKER (VON HERVORD), Peter.
Rare Dutch translation of a work on fortification giving a very detailed description of the mathematical problems encountered in designing and building fortifications. It was originally published in German in 1664 by the German military engineer Peter Becker. The translation is dedicated to Prince William Hendrik of Nassau. The engraved title-page shows workmen with tools and plans facing a female figure, while a child or putto and an ape sit drawing. The ape may be a joke alluding to the informal Dutch name for a pantograph, which translates as "drawing ape".A very good copy. Jordan 0208 (5 copies); Hoogendoorn BEKP01D (6 copies, incl. 1 incomplete); Sloos, Warfare 08049; STCN (3 of the same copies); cf. Jähns, p. 1207.
