CORNEILLE (Pierre).
Picot 108.

George and Michiel Van Gogh
London: R. Royston, 1664. 1st. Half-Leather. Collectible; Very Good. Printed by F.G. for R. Royston, London, 1664-1665. Ambassador from the States General of the United Provinces. Translatred into English, "with the Answer which his Sacred Majesty returned theronto". Two pamphlets bound together. These two pamphlets are important exchanges in the escalating struggle between the British and the Dutch, which led to the declaration of war a few months after the pamphlets were published, and also includes references to the West Indies. The Gogh pamphlet consists of some charges by the Dutch against the British interference and states "the fitting and preparing of Vessels of War on both sides", delivered just a few days before the British took New Amsterdam, prompting a lengthy and bitter reply by Sir George Downing., 1665. The 2 pamphlets are16 and 104 pgs. respectively and measure 7 5/8" x 6". The binding is a later half brown calf and marbled brown boards. (Also contains "A Reply of Sir George Downing Knight and Baronet, Envoy Extraordinaire from His Majesty of Great Britain, by Sir George Downing. To the Remarks of the Deputies of the Estates General upon his Memorial of December 20, 1664 Old Stile" (pgs. 1-104). Affixed to the front pastedown is a bookseller's description of the book. The Gogh pamphlet has been cropped a bit too close, affecting the catchwords, and has a small 1/2" hole that has gone thru each page, affecting a few letters. The title page has scattered slight browning. The Downing pamphlet is clean and cropped correctly. Pages arwe tight in the binding.

ZACCHIA, L.
Venetiis, Apud Turrinum, 1664. Title-page of the first work printed in red and black, both title-pages with a large woodcut vignette. Two works in one volume. (100), 404 (misnumbered 406) pp.; (76), 180 pp. Folio. Later half calf, spine with raised bands, label with gilt lettering, marbled boards, three vellum corners (vellum on one corner gone). Vinciana 1161 for the 1679 edition which was the first collected edition of these two works, these two separate original editions lack; Einaudi 6102 also the 1679 edition; Kress S.1150, first work only, second work not in Kress; Goldsmiths 1425, first work only, the second not in Goldsmiths; both not in Camus. Scarce first edition of both works. Lanfranco Zacchia was an Emilian jurist and the author of a Latin treatise (the present one) on wages which deserves mention for the rarity of the consideration of that subject in the days when he wrote. Zacchia distinguishes different forms of wages which he regards as the reward for any description of work. Wages are fixed by the monarch or the law, by custom or contract, and failing these, by a judge, who in fixing them should take account of the ability of the workman, the quality of his work, and the price of food. He also studies the judicial effects on wages of alterations in the value of money. The work deals with the subject in 110 questions or problems, both practical and theoretical, and treating numerous professions and sorts of work. Zacchia also deals, in various places, with the problem of usury. The second work deals with the decisions taken by the Rota, after the title-page … [Click Below for Full Description]

DESCARTES, René.
Lugduni Batavorum (Leida), ex officina Hackiana, 1664. in-4, pp. (36), 123 (mal num. "This book was the first attempt to cover the whole field of animal physiology. The work is really a physiological aoppendix to his Discourse on method..." (Garrison-Morton). Buon esempl. (lieve brunitura della carta).. Garrison Morton 574. Wellcome Cat. II, 453..
