Francisci, Erasmus; pseud.:) Gottlieb Warmund.
Bayreuth, Johann Gebhard, 1664. Mauser 321 und HAB A 3755). [Click Below for Full Description]

[American Indians]
[Np, but probably Holland, 1664. Engraving, 12 x 7 1/2 inches. Old crease mark across lower left corner, closely trimmed at upper left margin of print. Remnant of tape in upper right corner. A good copy. A fine engraving of an American Indian family consisting of a father, mother, and baby. The man, dressed in decorated shoes, leggings, and cape, is holding a bow and arrow and carries a quiver. The woman, carrying the child at her breast, is also handsomely dressed and is wearing jewelry on her wrists, arms, and across her chest. Although the natives are identified as being from Canada, a palm tree is in the background. The engraving is derived from an illustration originally published in François Du Creux's HISTORIAE CANADENSIS, published in Paris in 1664. The work from which this particular print derives is presently unknown, although the artist and engraver are identified, respectively, as A.a. Diepenbeck and A. Melaer, and "fol. 405" is engraved in the upper left corner. A delightful European representation of an Indian family, most probably produced before 1700.

DESCARTES René
chez Charles Angot, 1664. In-8 (mm. 227x165), p. pergamena antica, tit. oro su tassello al dorso, tagli rossi, 35 cc.nn. (frontesp., dedica a Colbert, prefazione), 448 pp.num., 4 cc.nn.

- [THE WORLD AND THE THEORY OF LIGHT]
Paris, Iacques le Gras, 1664. 8vo. Very nice contemporary full mottled calf with five raised bands to richly gilt spine. All edges of boards gilt. Old owner's name to title-page (Cognel, 1741). A small marginal strip of paper to outer blank margin of title-page, far from affecting printing, and very discreet. A lovely copy with large margins. (16), 260; 31; 30 pp. + final blank. Woodcut initials and vignettes. Richly illustrated in the text and with five full page illustrations (all woodcut). ¶ First edition of one of Descartes' most important works, his seminal "The World", which contains the fullest exposition of his philosophy, covering everything from method to metaphysics, astronomy, physics and biology.<br><br>It is in this foundational work, written in the 1630'ies, that Descartes presents us with his corpuscular cosmology and explains the creation of the solar system and the heliocentric system in general. As the entire philosophy presented in the work is based upon the heliocentric view, it is no wonder that Descartes, after having heard of Galileo's conviction due to suspection of heresy, delayed publishing the book (see eg. his letters to Marin Mersenne), which then only appeared posthumously, in 1664.<br><br>"...he had given an account in "Le monde, ou Traité de la lumière" of cosmogony and cosmology as products simply of matter in motion, making the laws of motion the ultimate "laws of nature" and all scientific explanation ultimately mechanistic. This treatise remained unpublished in Descartes' lifetime. So too did the associated L'homme...He withheld these es … [Click Below for Full Description]
