LABBÉ, Philippe
1664. 16 p.l., 394 (i.e. 392) pp. 8vo, cont. vellum over boards (minor browning). Paris: L. Billaine, 1664."This is the first edition of the earliest extant bibliography of bibliographies (despite the 'curis secundis auctior' on the title). It is basically an alphabetical list, arranged by authors' first names, followed by eight intricate subject indices, among them one of publishers' and booksellers' catalogues. Appended is a very useful numismatic bibliography. The work enjoyed three later editions during the seventeenth century and provided the basis for Teissier...Labbé (1607-67), one of the most learned polymaths of his time, was a Jesuit professor of philosophy in Paris."-Grolier Club, Bibliography, 62. Haebler, in his Handbuch, states that this is the second book on incunabula and the first in which the word is used in connection with printing. A fine copy and rare. Old stamp on verso of title and another on following leaf. ❧ Besterman, The Beginnings of Systematic Bibliography, pp. 50 & 54. Taylor, Book Catalogues, pp. 176, 208, & 219-20.

DESCARTES, René (1596-1650)
chez Michel Bobin & Nicolas le Gras, au troisiéme pillier de la grand salle du palais, à l'esperance & à L. Couronnée : 1664 : Paris : 8vo: ¶8 A-Q8 R2; 2A-B8; 3A-B8 (blank B8), 170 leaves, pp. [16] 260; 31 [1 blank]; 30 [2 blank]. Woodcut device on title of a bird in flight with a snake in its beak with floral sprays on each side, woodcut head and tail pieces and initials and 28 woodcut diagrams in the text. : Le monde, suppressed by Descartes after the trial of Galileo in 1633, presents a more or less complete statement of his cosmology. His great achievement was to develop a system of physics based on a simple theory of matter and a few simple laws - very similar to Newton's laws of motion - which also allowed him to account for all the known properties of light. The text was edited by Claude Clerselier (1614-1684) who added, anonymously, Gérauld de Cordemoy's 'Discours ... touchant le mouvement et le repos' and a treatise on fevers whose author I have not identified.

Folio, cont. vellum over boards, yapp edges. Munich: J. Jäcklin, 1664. First edition of this beautifully illustrated and important treatise on fortification. Many of the plates highlight lines of sight as well as cross-sections of walls and their foundations. There are also several more practical illustrations which display various equipment used by the besieging force and the besieged. The final plate shows the construction of mines to penetrate heavily fortified positions. Each figure is numbered and corresponds with explanations in the text. A fine copy in contemporary vellum. ATTENDOLI, Dario (Attendolo)
Venezia, Combi e La Nou, 1664. In-8 (188 x 114 mm.). Olschki, Choix, 258. Sabin 98732. UCBA II, 2041. Colas 2978. Lipperheide 23. Third edition of the most complete of the early costume books. With 415 woodcut costumes. Title with small abrasion and some rare and very mild soiling; overall an attractive copy with good and neat impressions of the plates, nicely bound in modern dark blue morocco, richly gilt spine.

Qualche trascurabile e sporadica macchietta. Cfr. Brunet V, 1104; Olschki, Choix, 258; cfr. R. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). TACITUS.
Strassburg (Argentorati), Ediderunt Georgius Andreas Dolhopfius & Johannes Eberhardus Zetznerus, 1664. 8vo. (XVIII,1122,(2 blank)) p. Overlapping vellum 17 cm (Ref: VD17 547:695101K; Schweiger 2,1002; Dibdin 2,452; Moss 2,643; Graesse 6/2 9; Fabricius/Ernesti 2,398) (Details: 6 thongs laced through the joints. Engraved title, depicting an altar, left of which stands a Roman emperor, right a German warrior; on the surface of the altar the text 'Aeternitati', for Eternity; just above the altar hangs the globe, upon which stands an eagle with spread wings. This scene seems a combination of two Roman coins. It was perhaps made after the verso side of a coin struck by Constantine the Great in Trier in 321 A.D.; on this coin there is however no eagle; a scene consisting of a globe on which an eagle stands, is to be seen on a denarius of Caracalla, struck after 217 A.D. This frontispiece is purely propagandistic in its presentation. It depicts not so much the struggle between the Romans and the German tribes, that Tacitus tells about. It rather symbolizes the claim of the Holy Roman Empire (Sacrum Romanum Imperium, Heiliges Römisches Reich), that it was the legitimate successor 'for eternity' of the Roman Empire. The imperial banner of the Holy Roman Empire depicted a black eagle) (Condition: Vellum age-tanned and slightly worn & spotted. Head of the spine chafed.
