GIRAFFI, Alessandro
1664. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A fine English translation of Alessandro Giraffi's "An Exact History of the Late Revolutions in Naples." This first-hand account of the revolt against Habsburg Spain in Naples in 1647. Masaniello, a local Italian fisherman, led a revolt which ransacked armories and prisons in Naples - a historical event that has been retold, painted, and argued for centuries. Masaniello was described as, "...a young man of twenty-seven, beautiful and graceful in appearance, his face was brown and somewhat burned by the sun: black eyes, blond hair, with locks that ran down his neck." (St. John., 68) This fine book, finely rebound in Moroccan red leather, includes a full-page woodcut portrait of Masaniello. This book is considered very rare. The translator, James Howell, was the 'author of the most curious volumes in English literature' (Hawkins, Library Catalog, 1990). [Attributes: First Edition]

BYTHNER, Victorinus
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An incredibly rare analysis of the Psalms of David by Victorinus Bythner. Bythner wrote this work as a reference on the language and vocabulary used in the psalms in both Hebrew and Latin. This work saw substantial popularity and was reprinted through the mid-19th-century. According to the 'Dictionary of National Biography', "Bythner's grammatical works, though written in curiously faulty Latin, are models of lucid and compact arrangement, and continued long in use... The most important 'Lyra Prophetica Davids Regis' is a grammatical analysis of every word in the Hebrew psalter." (DNB) Bythner first published this work in 1650, and two editions were printed in 1664. This, the first of the two, has a different publisher imprint than the latter. (Wing). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueb … [Click Below for Full Description]

- [THE WORLD AND THE THEORY OF LIGHT]
Paris, Iacques le Gras, 1664. 8vo. Very nice contemporary full mottled calf with five raised bands to richly gilt spine. All edges of boards gilt. Old owner's name to title-page (Cognel, 1741). A small marginal strip of paper to outer blank margin of title-page, far from affecting printing, and very discreet. A lovely copy with large margins. (16), 260; 31; 30 pp. + final blank. Woodcut initials and vignettes. Richly illustrated in the text and with five full page illustrations (all woodcut). ¶ First edition of one of Descartes' most important works, his seminal "The World", which contains the fullest exposition of his philosophy, covering everything from method to metaphysics, astronomy, physics and biology. It is in this foundational work, written in the 1630'ies, that Descartes presents us with his corpuscular cosmology and explains the creation of the solar system and the heliocentric system in general. As the entire philosophy presented in the work is based upon the heliocentric view, it is no wonder that Descartes, after having heard of Galileo's conviction due to suspection of heresy, delayed publishing the book (see eg. his letters to Marin Mersenne), which then only appeared posthumously, in 1664."...he had given an account in "Le monde, ou Traité de la lumière" of cosmogony and cosmology as products simply of matter in motion, making the laws of motion the ultimate "laws of nature" and all scientific explanation ultimately mechanistic. This treatise remained unpublished in Descartes' lifetime. So too did the associated L'homme...He withheld these essays...and inste … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
