JAPANESE WOODBLOCK BOARD
Japan: mid-Edo to early Meiji.A most instructive carved woodblock from the Torii school of artists, which was founded by Kiyonobu Torii (1664-1729), and still continues. Their work is mostly reserved for single-sheet prints, oftentimes theatrical posters and playbills. Many of their woodcuts were devoted to bijinga (pictures of beautiful women), using the benizuri-e technique, which involved using one or two colors of ink on the woodblocks rather than hand-coloring.There were three generations of artists named Kiyomitsu Torii, the first lived 1735-85; the second 1787-1869; and the third 1833-92.In fine condition.❧ Chibbett, The History of Japanese Printing and Book Illustration, pp. 142-69.

Somer, Jan.
Frankfurt, Johann Frantz for Wilhelm Serlin, 1664. 4to. (8), 200 pp. With 8 engraved plates (some with touches of colour, two folded). - (Bound with) II: Wenner, Adam. Türckisches Reisebuch von Prag aus biß gen Constantinopel [.]. Nuremberg, Johann Andreas Endter & Wolfgang Endter's heirs, 1665. (8), 135, (5) pp. Title printed in red and black. Contemporary full vellum with handwritten title to spine. Exceedingly rare Mediterranean travelogue: one of two German editions published in the same year (the other, an entirely different translation, by Cunradus in Amsterdam; the Nuremberg edition cited by several bibliographies is fictitious). Dutch editions had previously appeared in 1649 (the first) and in 1661. Although the Amsterdam-published German edition dates the journey to 1640-42, the Dutch first edition as well as the present translation make it clear that it had taken place as early as 1590-92! Somer's voyage began inauspiciously - he was captured by a Turkish galley in the harbour of Famagusta and briefly enslaved, but was soon set free after the French consul at Alexandria intervened for him. In spite of this episode, he travelled the Ottoman Empire at a time of relative peace (the Long Turkish War with the Habsburgs would not break out until 1593), spending several months in Egypt, Constantinople and Palestine. His colourful account includes a description of desert sandstorms and the trade in Egyptian mummies (not all of them ancient) as well as extensive chapters on Constantinople, the Ottoman court, the ubiquitous baths, Turkish customs and manners, the Muslim fai … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAGGI, Girolamo
Amstelodami: sumptibus Andreæ Frisii, 1664. 1664 TORTURE Girolamo Maggi TURK Prisoner Bells & Tower of Pisa Illustrated 2in1 Girolamo Maggi was an early 16th-century Italian scholar who composed several military treatises. His two most famous works are often found printed and bound together, ‘De Tintinnabulis’ and ‘De Equuleo’. While imprisoned by the Turks in the dungeons of Constantinople, Maggi wrote these works recounting his encounters on bells and on torture – two remarkably different works. ‘Tintinnaublis’ is Maggi’s reaction to the lack of bells and bell towers in Constantinople. He covers the history of bells and the transmission of sounds through church steeples and towers. It features fascinating engravings depicting bells and bell ringers, however, the most important illustration is a folding engraving of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This work features the notes and commentary of Franciscus Sweertius. ‘Equuleo’ is a much more difficult work to palate. This treatise accurately describes the methods and instruments of torture including many fine, but unsettling engravings of the treatment of martyrs. The Ottoman’s overseeing the prison in which Maggi resided ordered him to be executed by the torture of strangulation. This work includes notes and commentary of Gottfried Jungermann Item number: #3360 Price: $750 MAGGI, Girolamo Hieronymi Magii: De tintinnabulis liber postumus. WILLIS, Thomas.
Typis Ja. Flesher, Impensis Jo. Martyn & Ja. Allestry; Eberhard Welpen, London; Strasbourg, 1664. First edition, an exceptionally fine copy in contemporary armorial binding, and with outstanding provenance, of the "most complete and accurate account of the nervous system which had hitherto appeared, and the work that coined the term ‘neurology’" (GM). ?With this contribution, [Willis] was entitled to be a member of the notable group of seventeenth-century anatomists that included Valsalva, Malpighi, Leeuwenhoek, and others? (Lilly). ?Dissatisfied with the imperfect and fragmentary descriptions in earlier accounts of the brain, Willis devised a comprehensive and comparative program of brain dissections, which he carried out with the aid of his pupils Christopher Wren, Richard Lower and Thomas Millington ? one of the earliest examples of collaborative scientific research in England. Willis classified and described ten pairs of cranial nerves, six of which are still recognized, and was the first to grasp the physiological significance of the ?circle of Willis,? the circle of anastomosed arteries at the base of the brain by which full circulation to all parts of the brain can be maintained even when the carotid or vetebral arteries are blocked. From his observations of animal brains, Willis hypothesized that the convolutionary complexity of the human cerebral cortex is correlated with man?s superior intelligence, and that the cerebellum, a similar structure in all animals, is the source of involuntary action. Willis also coined the term ?neurology,? which made its first appeara … [Click Below for Full Description]

Firenze: all' insegna della Stella, 1664. First edition. pp. (4, title page in facsimile), 5-91, (1, colophon). Original vellum-backed contemporary flexible boards, sm 8vo (7.75 x 6.75 inches; 19.7 x 14.4 cm). The front free flyleaf has the title neatly printed in an old hand. "The first methodical work on snake poison. Redi demonstrated for the first time that, for the poison to produce its effect, it must be injected under the skin" (Garrison-Morton 2102). See also Russell and Scharffenberg no. 123. This first edition has some interesting early associations. It is from the library of Gabriel de Glatigny III (1690-1755) with his custom bookplate on the front pastdown. Gabriel de Glatigny III was a knight and head of the public prosecutors at the Cour des Monnaies in Lyon which is the court that dealt with financial crimes in France at the time. Additionally he was a member of the Academy of Sciences, Literature, and Arts of Lyon. The half title page and the first page of text bears the oval armorial name stamp of the second owner, Ex. Bibliotheca J. Richard D.M. Included with the first edition of this work is Peter Knoefel's translation into English entitled "Francesco Redi on Vipers" published in Leiden in 1988 by E. J. MELLO, D. Francisco Manuel de].
[Lisbon?, A. Craesbeeck de Mello?, 1664?].. FIRST EDITION. 4°, disbound. Caption title. Woodcut initial on p. 1. Some light browning. In good condition. 54 pp. A-F4, G3. Lacking G4, a blank. *** FIRST EDITION? This Demostracion is an elaborate proof and defense for a previous work with a similar title, also written by D. Francisco Manuel de Mello under the same pseudonym, Declaracion, que por el Reyno de Portugal ofrece el el Doctor Geronymo de Santa Cruz todos los Reynos, y Provincias de Europa, contra las calumnias publicadas de sus emulos. Both works defend Portuguese independence from Spanish domination, and are important elements in the literature of the Restauração. The bibliography of both works is complicated, and all editions are rare. There appears to be only one other edition of the present text, also a 4º with a caption title, containing 16 unnumbered leaves, and with a colophon stating that it was printed in the Officina de António Craesbeeck de Mello, 1664, though there may be another, with (17) ll., by the same printer, with the imprint 1644. However, for various reasons stemming from the text, which refers to events of the early 1660s, such as the Portuguese campaign of Don Juan of Austria, this work could never have been printed in 1644. Our guess is that this 54 page version would be the earliest, and that it appeared in 1664. Mello divides his argument into three parts. In the first, he reviews Portuguese military triumphs over the past 24 years. In the second, he reviews the duplicity of Spain in its relations with France, Holland, England, and other E … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Nadányi, János (c.1643-1707)], [HOWELL, James, translator]
London: Printed by W. G. for Henry Marsh, 1664. [Hungarian History]. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Octavo (17 x 11cm), pp.[18] 32; 49-302 [2]. Later nineteenth or early twentieth century dark brown full calf with gilt titles to red label on spine. Several black ink ownership inscriptions to recto of the first original leaf, including a note recording payment for the book, possibly its very first purchase. Some old repair work to this first leaf. Textblock browned with some spotting, especially to preliminaries. Boards worn with some surface cracking to the leather, upper board bowed, some rubbing and chipping to extremities. Scarce with only ten copies recorded on copac. Nadányi's family had ruled his home town of Körösladány in Hungary since the thirteenth century, but during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries Turkish invasions radically altered the power dynamics of the area. János was sent to the Low Countries for his education, where he published this short history of Hungary in Latin in 1663. Having toured Europe, including England, where he likely arranged for this translation to be produced, he returned home to become a lecturer, and later a priest.
