[PRAETORIUS, Johannes]
1664. Large engraved vignette on title. 16 unnumbered leaves. Small 4to, attractive modern marbled boards. Leipzig: C. Kirchner, n.d [1664 or 1665].First edition of this most uncommon account of the 1664 comet, visually the most impressive of the 17th century. It was observed by many of the greatest scientists of the period including Cassini and Borelli in Italy, Auzout and Petit in France, Hooke in England, and Samuel Danforth in North America. In this work, Praetorius uses the pseudonym of Johannes Richter, "astrophilo." Praetorius (1630-80), "had an open eye and a sharp ear for all wonder stories, witch tales, and accounts of ghosts and sorcery current among the people. He indefatigably collected all information on remarkable subjects and happenings, and was fond of popular gossip."-Faber du Faur, German Baroque Literature, pp. 199-200-(who describes related items but not this work). The fine and large vignette on the title depicts the course of the comet with the constellations in the background. Praetorius was clearly familiar with the early and contemporary literature on comets and astronomy because of the many references he makes in the text. He describes the appearance, size, and path of the comet.Fine copy.❧ Lalande, p. 265. Waibler, "Johannes Praetorius (1630-1680).

Tagli azzurrati. [Click Below for Full Description]

I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "The first method for estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him." ― Niccolò Machiavelli, The Prince Niccolo Machiavelli is one of the most important figures in 15th- and early 16th-century Renaissance philosophy. His works helped define what has become political science. His most famous work "The Prince" has infamously coined the term 'Machiavellianism' regarding politics and dishonest politicians. It has often been considered the first work of modern philosophy, mostly because it conflicts so strongly with Catholic doctrines concerning politics and ethics at the time. "The Art of War," Machiavelli's treatise on military science, was the only theoretical or historical work to be published during his lifetime. This book of 'high military' concepts discusses military discipline, civilian interactions, how to live without factions, how to define war, and how to conduct diplomacy during a time of war. In 'The Prince,' Machiavelli treads a line between accepting tyranny and supporting free republic. He advises leaders on 'acceptable' tyranny, justifying many immoral actions taken by kings and princes; however, this point likely was written to encourage medieval Catholicism to be less strict in their relationship with the law. Ultimately, Machiavelli was seeking to provide rulers with a guide on how to be accepted by their subjects - however necessary - be it commanding respect, demanding actions through law, using bribery, or even imparting fear. Venetiis, apud Ioannem Viezzerium, 1664. Small folio (28.5 x 19.5cm), contemporary presentation binding in vellum richly gilt on boards with golden roll borders and corner tools, central golden fleuron with painted coat-of-arms, golden gauffered edges (rear cover with lack of vellum at the edge, top and bottom of spine defective). Pp. (14), 177, (3), textually complete, inside in clean condition (some browning due to paper quality, some spots to pp. 47/48). Frequent misnumbering of pages. First and only edition, mostly bibliographically unknown, and certainly printed in a very limited number of copies. It is apparently lacking the engraved portrait of the author, however, on Worldcat/KVK are listed only 2 other copies, in the ONB in Wien and in the British Library, both listed without mention of the portrait. No copy listed in Germany, apparently. Under a pharmaceutical point of view this book is relevant for the 4th and final chapter, containing the section ‘De medicamentis’, starting from p. 165, leaf X3r, with a list of pharmaceutical remedies and syrups. Amstelodami: sumptibus Andreæ Frisii, 1664.
1664. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Girolamo Maggi was an early 16th-century Italian scholar who composed several military treatises. His two most famous works are often found printed and bound together, 'De Tintinnabulis' and 'De Equuleo'. While imprisoned by the Turks in the dungeons of Constantinople, Maggi wrote these works recounting his encounters on bells and on torture - two remarkably different works. 'Tintinnaublis' is Maggi's reaction to the lack of bells and bell towers in Constantinople. He covers the history of bells and the transmission of sounds through church steeples and towers. It features fascinating engravings depicting bells and bell ringers, however, the most important illustration is a folding engraving of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This work features the notes and commentary of Franciscus Sweertius. 'Equuleo' is a much more difficult work to palate. This treatise accurately describes the methods and instruments of torture including many fine, but unsettling engravings of the treatment of martyrs. The Ottoman's overseeing the prison in which Maggi resided ordered him to be executed by the torture of strangulation. This work includes notes and commentary of Gottfried Jungermann. CHRYSOSTOME, John Saint
1664. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Happiness can only be achieved by looking inward & learning to enjoy whatever life has and this requires transforming greed into gratitude." ― John Chrysostom A rare 17th-century printing of John Chrysostom's sermons and homilies. Chrysostom was one of the most important Early Christian Church authors and preachers and is most remembered for his sermons and homilies. He preached on many different subjects, but his most frequented topic was helping the needy. Chrysostom calls for followers of Jesus to set aside their material desires to help the poor, often in a way that shamed the rich and guilted them in to giving. "Do you pay such honor to your excrements as to receive them into a silver chamber-pot when another man made in the image of God is perishing in the cold?" (Chrysostom in Liebeschuetz) This three-volume edition was edited and translated by Paul Antoine de Marsilly. [Attributes: First Edition]
