. . Excellent. Large card of 956x786mm, formed by the union of four sheets, two of them engraved (with combined printing) and the other two printed, predesigned to that end. The two upper sheets are composed of a gallery of portraits of all the Spanish kings up to 1664, entitled Portraicts de tous les Roys d Espaigne depuis Atanarezo, qui a commencé a regner en l an de grâce 343 jusqu à Philippe IV du nom à présent. The two lower sheets, printed, feature a summary of the main events that took place during each of their reigning periods. The group contains the most indispensable knowledge for a king about his predecessors, equals, kings of another country, and the main historical landmarks of the country they rule. The author, François Jollain, formulates it with clarity: it is convenient that each lieutenant on earth [each king] chosen by the King of Kings [God] to rule the fates of a territory knows of the feats and events of their fellow men [the other kings] . Printed in 1664, the last arch of the gallery, was occupied with a portrait of the engraved effigy of monarch number 91, Phillip IV, who was reigning at that time -a present Regnant, with the following arch occupied by the coat of arms of the Spanish House of Bourbons, as can be seen in the fragment catalogued as piece 02265 in the Huesca Museum, where only the two upper sheets with the margins trimmed, are kept(1). The text that occupies the two lower sheets, in parallel to the portraits, ends with the information regarding the ninety-first Spanish monarch. In the copy we offer however, a portrait of Charles II is included, along with a legend detailing his date of birth and that he was proclaimed King on the 8 October 1665. So we are looking at a copy on which the plate of the second engraved sheet was modified and press run at the end of 1665 or the beginning of 1666, with a total of 92 portraits, exactly as in the other complete copy we have found, which is kept in the Bibliothèque nationale of France. [ http://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb322877279/PUBLIC ]. The legend was probably put to good use, providing information about of the dates of birth and proclaiming of the child monarch because then, as his brief history didn t allow for more landmarks, it was unnecessary to draft a text about him, thus avoiding having to print on the fourth sheet again. - // Refs.: Huesca Museum (Spain), 02265.- // (1) The item is recorded in CERES database, catalogued as Retrato de todos los Reyes de España desde Atanarezo a Felipe III (Portrait of all the Kings of Spain from Atanarezo to Phillip III) [sic. Phillip V].

Peter Stuyvesant Confirms a Manhattan Land Grant Only Three Months Before Handing Over "Niew Amsterdam" to the British

1664 - Manuscript Document Signed. Land Grant to Daniel Terneur, [New York, N.Y.], May 16, 1664. 1 p., 16 1/2 x 13 in. Archivally framed to 26 1/4 x 26 in. Countersigned by Carel Van Brugge. With paper seal. Stuyvesant grants land to Daniel Perneur on the "island of Manhattans about the Town of new Harlem. Lying against the Land of Jochim Pieterse. also three parcels at Van Ceulen's Hoeck." In turn, Terneur agreed to pay his taxes and otherwise "obey their Patrons as good inhabitants are in duty bound to do."With an embossed beaver seal (the symbol of the New Netherland) affixed, Stuyvesant confirms the grant of a plot of land to Daniel Terneur.Three months later, on September 8, 1664, the inhabitants of New Amsterdam chose British rule when they refused to defend the colony ruled by their draconian Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant. He was forced to surrender the city to the British forces. ExcerptStuyvesant confirms the grant of a plot of land to Daniel Terneur: "Petrus Stuyvesant, on behalf of their Excellencies the Lords States General of the United Netherlands and the Honorable Lords Directors of the Priv. West Indies Company.together with the Honorable Council.have given and granted to Daniel Terneur on the Island of Manhattans about the Town of new Harlem a certain parcel of land.Lying against the Land of Jochim Pieterse.also three parcels at Van Ceulen's Hoeck."As proprietor, Terneur agrees to "acknowledge and obey their Patrons as good inhabitants are in duty bound to do," and to submit to "the payment of Tythes" and "other such burdens and imposts as may be required from the Settlers."Historical BackgroundThe Dutch influence in the New World is famously associated with the Hudson Valley. Peter Minuit's bargaining with the Manhattoes for the purchase of the island on which they hunted large game remains shrouded in speculation but regardless of the details, Manhattan became Dutch territory with the founding of Fort Amsterdam in 1626. Securing the mouth of the Hudson allowed for wider Dutch settlement further up the river valley, and for forty years, the Dutch maintained a powerful European interest in America. The most famous Dutchman from this brief period was the colonial Governor Pieter Stuyvesant. Stuyvesant was transferred to New Amsterdam from his post as colonial governor in the Lesser Antilles, where he had lost a leg during a naval battle with the French near the isle of St. Maarten. His rule in New Amsterdam was draconian and he was wildly disliked by the Dutch colonists. When the British fleet sailed into New York Harbor in 1664 with the intent to attack, the Dutch refused to defend the colony, choosing British rule over further governance by Stuyvesant. Styuvesant was forced to surrender the Dutch city to the British, who renamed it for their king's brother, the Earl of York.Fleeing persecution (and a murder charge in Amiens, France) Daniel Tourneur was driven from his French home by Catholic persecution and invading German armies in 1648. Like so many other religious refugees, he sought refuge in Holland, at Leyden, where he met and married Jacquelin de Parisis. Two years later, in 1652, he sailed with his wife and infant son, Daniel, Jr., for New Netherlands. He was made a corporal in a military company formed to protect the colony against Indian attack on April 7, 1654. In August 1660, he was appointed Magistrate for Harlem, serving several terms. He was a delegate to the General Assembly in 1664, and was also one of the Nicolls (Harlem) Patentees.[1][1] Riker.

A DEFENCE OF THE ANSWER AND ARGUMENTS OF THE SYNOD MET AT BOSTON IN THE YEAR 1662. CONCERNING THE SUBJECT OF BAPTISM AND CONSOCIATION OF CHURCHES....TOGETHER WITH AN ANSWER TO THE APOLOGETICAL PREFACE SET BEFORE THE ESSAY

Cambridge [Ma.]: Printed by S. Green and M. Johnson for Hezekiah Usher of Boston, 1664. [2],46,102pp. plus the final blank. Small quarto. Modern calf, gilt leather label. Light marginal dampstaining to latter half of text. A few leaves trimmed close, affecting marginal notes in some places. Minor toning and foxing. Very good. A very important early American imprint, the first prose book of over one hundred pages produced in the British North American colonies. It is the longest and probably one of the only obtainable works from the first quarter century of printing in America. This work is of the greatest importance as a document of New England church history. The Synod of 1662 was largely concerned with the question of baptism and the church membership of children. Holmes notes: "...afterwards, church bodies were strained between Synodists and anti-Synodists for half a century or more...Like a red thread in a tapestry, the question of baptism runs through the whole history of the Protestant movement in Europe, in England, and in America. Puritans with strict views, like those held by the Rev. John Davenport of New Haven, administered baptism only to the 'infant seed' of church members of regenerated life who were in full Communion; that is, only to children of persons who had experienced conversion and could give an account of spiritual transformation...." This system of belief worked very well in the first generation of New England settlement, but by the 1650s increasing numbers of the second generation and new immigrants could not qualify themselves to partake of Communion. Thus, these parents were unable to confer church membership on their children. Moderating forces suggested a relaxation of the rules of church membership, a position Richard Mather took as early as 1645. The subject was hotly debated until the synod of 1662, when Jonathan Mitchel and Richard Mather led the way to what is known as the Half-Way Covenant. This opened the way for church membership for the children of professing Christians in good standing in the community. This liberalization of the rules for church membership was abhorrent to the more conservative elements in New England. John Davenport, a leader of the conservatives, was joined by Increase Mather - the son of Richard and a student of Mitchel - in attacking the decision of the Synod. Davenport and Mather called for a return to the stricter rules for admission to church membership in a pamphlet attacking the Half-Way Covenant. The present work is the reply of Richard Mather and Jonathan Mitchel. In it, they restate the arguments they had presented two years before, and elaborate upon them. But Holmes says, "If strict logic were the only thing to be considered, the unbending Davenport and his young disciple were correct. But the altered state of the church needed compromise. It seemed to the synodists the lesser evil to admit unregenerate persons to a modified half-way membership, than yield to the pressing alternative of admitting them later to full membership and to the Communion. Mather, after the death of his father, saw this and he reversed his position." This work, a dispute between Richard Mather and his son, Increase, ties together two views of New England theology from its most famous family. It is of futher interest for its printers, the Green family, the third printers in British America, and for its publisher, Hezekiah Usher. To find a 17th-century American imprint of this early date and importance is extremely difficult today. No copies appear in auction records for the past thirty-five years. EVANS 89. CHURCH 588.         Edit Du Roy Donné à Paris, le 28 May 1664.

No Binding. Fine. quarto, 18, [2] pp., light red smudge to upper blank margin of first page, otherwise a fine clean copy. This decree establishes the French West India Company. The company was formed by this Edit to control all of the French American colonies, already settled or to be settled in South America, the West Indies, and Canada. This well-known company was established for the purpose of opening up trade with America principally along the Amazon, and in Canada, Acadia, Newfoundland, Florida and the islands of the Antilles. The company was granted a monopoly on trade with America, which was to last for forty years. It was supposed to populate Canada, using the profits of the sugar economy that began in Guadeloupe. Its capital was six million pounds and its headquarters was in Le Havre. The stock of the Company was so considerable that in less than six months, 45 vessels were equipped, with which they took possession of all the places in their grant, and established commerce. Despite its special privileges it soon got into difficulties. It was badly hit by the war of 1666 and could not face that of 1672. Colbert would not take over the risks and the Company was dissolved by Royal command in 1674. The King paid its debts amounting to 3,025,000 livres and took its capital of 1,287,185 livres as reimbursement, and the Colonies were reunited to the State. Variant issue of Wroth and Annan, numbers 60 and 61. This edition not in Sabin, or European Americana. See JCB III, p. 111, for its description of a variant issue in that library. Maggs did not have a copy in their 1936 catalog The French Colonisation of America. Not in Staton & Tremaine, not in Lande, not in Beinecke Lesser Antilles. Henry Stevens had a copy of the 1675 revocation of the Company in their 1926 catalog of Rare Americana, which, coincidentally, was also printed by Veuve Saugrain. (It was priced at £ 31 10s, and was the first copy that the firm had met with).

Very nice contemporary full mottled calf with five raised bands to richly gilt spine. All edges of boards gilt. Old owner's name to title-page (Cognel, 1741). A small marginal strip of paper to outer blank margin of title-page, far from affecting printing, and very discreet. A lovely copy with large margins. (16), 260; 31; 30 pp. + final blank. Woodcut initials and vignettes. Richly illustrated in the text and with five full page illustrations (all woodcut).. First edition of one of Descartes' most important works, his seminal "The World", which contains the fullest exposition of his philosophy, covering everything from method to metaphysics, astronomy, physics and biology. It is in this foundational work, written in the 1630'ies, that Descartes presents us with his corpuscular cosmology and explains the creation of the solar system and the heliocentric system in general. As the entire philosophy presented in the work is based upon the heliocentric view, it is no wonder that Descartes, after having heard of Galileo's conviction due to suspection of heresy, delayed publishing the book (see eg. his letters to Marin Mersenne), which then only appeared posthumously, in 1664."...he had given an account in "Le monde, ou Traité de la lumière" of cosmogony and cosmology as products simply of matter in motion, making the laws of motion the ultimate "laws of nature" and all scientific explanation ultimately mechanistic. This treatise remained unpublished in Descartes' lifetime. So too did the associated L'homme...He withheld these essays...and instead published his general system of physics...in the Principles of Philosophy in 1644." (D.S.B. p. 52). Beginning with doubting man's sensations and the relationship of these to the world around us, Descartes sets out to develop his view of the physical world. He establishes his laws of motion and the theory of the lack of void or empty space in nature. Having established these theories, Descartes can fully explain the nature of light, and he gives us the twelve properties of the behavior of light, all based on his belief that light travels instantaneously (of course also possible, since nature is without void).Brunet: 611; Norman 629

De Homine Figuris, et latinitate donatus a Florentio Schuyl.

Lugduni Batavorum (Leida), ex officina Hackiana, 1664, - in-4, pp. (36), 123 (mal num. "This book was the first attempt to cover the whole field of animal physiology. The work is really a physiological aoppendix to his Discourse on method." (Garrison-Morton). Buon esempl. (lieve brunitura della carta). Garrison Morton 574. Wellcome Cat. II, 453. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
