Alpinae seu Foederatae Rhaetiae Subditarumque ei Terrarum nova descriptio.

Willem Blaeu, Amsterdam 1662 - This detailed map of eastern Switzerland depicts the Graubunden Canton. Includes Chur, Davos, St. Moritz, etc. The region of Graubunden was once part of the Roman Empire's Raetia province. Throughout, the map labels cities, towns, villages with topography beautifully rendered in profile. The four corners of the map include beautifully engraved cartouches with the title cartouche engraved by Philip Cluver featuring soldiers and river gods. Engraved by Simon Hamersveldt. The map was originally published by Jodocus Hondius and reissued by Blaeu with his own imprint. The map is in good condition with minor wear along original centerfold. Minimal foxing. Original pressmark is visible. Willem Blaeu (1571-1638) was a prolific Dutch mapmaker who started one of the most famous map publishing firms of the 17th century. It was at this time that the Dutch controlled the map trade, and their ornate and beautiful maps had immense popularity. Blaeu was instrumental in driving this dominance in his lifetime, and this legacy was continued by his sons. This is a beautiful example of his work. Map. Engraving. Image measures 15 x 19.5".

Theatrum Sympatheticum auctum...de Unguento vero Armario

Nuremberg: Johann Andreas Endter & Wolfgang, 1662. Early Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. Finely rebound in full polished calf, some foxing and discoloration to title along with an old owner's mark, title trimmed a little close at bottom, scattered light foxing; a nice clean copy overall. The best Latin edition with the added material by Papin and Mohyus (8), 722, (42)pp. Digby was a renowned world traveler who supposedly spoke 10 or 12 languages - he collected recipes and scientific discoveries to bring back to England. The basis of this work is an extension of a speech he gave in Montpelier a few years previous on the Powder of Sympathy where an element of the weapon was treated in order to cure the wound it caused - usually by removing the bandage from a musket wound, treating the bandage with the powder and thereby curing the wound. The theory was remarkable for its high levels of both nonsense and popularity. Hudibras mocked the idea in the following year and a 1687 joke version had it performed at a set time on a ship born dog in order to determine longitude. Size: Quarto (4to). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. Category: Medicine & Health; Science & Technology. Inventory No: 045796.

THE TRYAL OF SIR HENRY VANE, KT. AT THE KINGS BENCH, WESTMINSTER, JUNE THE 2d. AND 6th. 1662. TOGETHER WITH WHAT HE INTENDED TO HAVE SPOKEN THE DAY OF HIS SENTENCE (JUNE 11.) FOR ARREST OF JUDGMENT, (HAD HE NOT BEEN INTERRUPTED AND OVER-RULED BY THE COURT) AND HIS BILL OF EXCEPTIONS. WITH OTHER OCCASIONAL SPEECHES, &c. ALSO HIS SPEECH AND PRAYER, &c. ON THE SCAFFOLD

[London], 1662. Small quarto. Modern three quarter black calf and cloth, spine gilt. Lightly tanned, an occasional small stain. Final four leaves repaired with some sixty words (in whole or in part) in facsimile. Final leaf mounted. Trimmed close, occasionally affecting pagination in upper margin. Good overall. First and only edition, the Frank Deering copy, with his gilt leather bookplate on the front free endpaper. Henry Vane was born in England in 1613, came to New England in 1635, and was elected governor of Massachusetts the following year, aged only twenty-three. Deeply religious, Vane was among the most radical of Puritans. He supported Anne Hutchinson during the Antinomian crisis, and became a close ally of John Cotton. Vane's stay in Massachusetts was tempestuous, and he returned to England in 1637 to become a member of the Long Parliament, though his interest in New England continued. Vane was instrumental in procuring the Rhode Island charter, and his friendly efforts to aid the New England colonies were appreciated by Roger Winthrop and Roger Williams. Soon after the fall of Cromwell and the restoration of the monarchy he was imprisoned for two years, convicted of treason, and executed. Lowndes says "THE TRYAL was written by a Sectarist in favor of Vane and printed by stealth." The text contains the speech he had intended to speak from the scaffold (but was forbidden by court order) which would have elaborated his revolutionary ideas on parliamentary supremacy and the compact between ruler and ruled, issues that resounded in colonial American history for more than the next one hundred years.

A BRIEF NARRATIVE OF THAT STUPENDIOUS TRAGEDIE LATE INTENDED TO BE ACTED BY THE SATANICAL SAINTS OF THESE REFORMING TIMES...TOGETHER WITH THE CONFESSIONS, SPEECHES, AND PRAYERS OF GEORGE PHILLIPS, THOMAS TONGE, NATHANIEL GIBBS, FRANCIS STUBBS, AT THE PLACE OF EXECUTION, ON MUNDAY DECEMB. 22, 1662

London, 1662. Small quarto. 20th-century red half morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Light foxing and toning. Last few leaves lightly dampstained at bottom edge; final five leaves with some loss to bottom margin, minutely affecting a few words of text. Good. First edition of this astonishing narrative, laying out a plot by a New Englander living in London to murder King Charles II and re-establish Cromwellian rule. Largely given in cued dialogue, as furnished by a courtroom shorthand reporter, this work recounts the narrative of a plot on the King's life by Captain John Baker, "then living in East-Smithfield, formerly of New-England." Baker was an old adherent of Hugh Peter, or Peters, executed for regicide sympathies in 1660. William Hill, author and informer for this work, encountered Baker in the streets of London and describes him as "but an illiterate and rough-hewn fellow," though capable of great mischief, for "in New-England he might be sufficiently possessed with villainous principles;" thus, Hill decides that he will "modestly put my self upon the sifting of him." This led to hints of a plot to seize and murder the King, slaughter "those Rogues at Whitehall," and restore a "Godly Party" of former Cromwellians to power. Professing complicity, Hill met with conspirators over the next two weeks - mostly disaffected military veterans and seamen, some with New England connections - in private chambers and taverns, where logistics for arming the rebellion were deliberated. All the while, however, Hill was in contact with Sir Richard Brown, a government spymaster, who collected the intelligence as it emerged, and "from whom I received instruction every night." On Oct. 28th, with the enactment of the plot seemingly imminent, Brown and Lieutenant of the Tower Sir John Robinson decided to pounce. Hill accompanied a detachment of soldiers to a pre-arranged meeting place where at least five of the conspirators were apprehended: Riggs, Hinde, Tonge, Stubbs, and one White, a cane merchant said by Tonge to have "bought armes for six men for this design, at his own cost and charge." Captain Baker of Massachusetts was not among them, however, having last been heard of at the Feathers Tavern in Fish Street three evenings before. The remainder of the narrative chronicles, in vivid and often desperate dialogue, the arraignment and trial of six men for High Treason, with further details from preliminary examinations, and four dying speeches or prayers. Hill testified against his co-conspirators and was in turn cross-examined by the court. The elaborate organization boasted of by some of the conspirators may have been illusory in the end - Riggs and Hinde assured Hill that "Windsor Castle was their own" with "five hundred men...fixed in and about Windsor," that "all the churches in London were concerned in it," that "four hundred assistants" were ready in Dorsetshire, and that two thousand horsemen, for whom armor and weaponry had been procured, were expected to ride into London on Monday the 27th, preparatory to "the fatal night." All of these people and plans seem to have melted away, however, once the ringleaders were arrested. And Captain John Baker of New England, who above all seems to have planned the securing of the King's person and the assault on Whitehall, simply fades from the story, despite Hill's account and Riggs' testimony at the trial. A fascinating tale of an American colonist whose place in British history might have been measured alongside the likes of Guy Fawkes.

Basilika: The Workes of King Charles

1662. CHARLES I.Basilika: The Workes of King Charles, The Martyr. With a collection of Declarations, Treaties, And other Papers concerning the Differences Betwixt His said Majesty and his Two Houses of Parliament.London: Printed by James Flesher for R. Royston, Book-seller to His Most Sacred Majesty, 1662.First folio edition of the works of King Charles I—the enormously popular (and vainly suppressed) testament to the executed monarch?'s political principles and spiritual devotion—the first edition directly approved by Charles II, beautifully printed with three magnificent double-page copper-engraved plates, engraved frontispiece (by Hollar) and title page, handsomely bound by Mansell. In late 1647, with tensions between Charles I and Parliament mounting, the king fled from Oliver Cromwell and the army. In November, he escaped "to the Isle of Wight, where he seems to have expected that Colonel Hammond, the governor of Carisbooke Castle, would protect him… Hammond, however, was faithful to his trust, and Charles became a resident, and before long a prisoner in the castle" (DNB). The next year, he would be tried and executed. "A few hours after the King's execution, his Eikon Basilike was in the hands of the people… So marvelous was its effect, that contemporary authorities declare that nothing but the Government's ingenious and persistent condemnations of the work prevented an immediate restoration of the crown"(Almack, 3). "Charles' posthumous campaign of persuasion was perhaps the most successful he ever waged… By the end of the first year of the Commonwealth, 'The King's Book' was everywhere, showing up like an irrepressible phantom, even in miniature editions designed for concealment" (Schama, History of Britain II:177). "The work is a masterpiece in its expression of Charles' principles… and by making a martyr of this Stuart king, [it] exercised a considerable influence on English history" (Kunitz & Haycraft, 212), helping prepare the way for the 1660 Restoration of Charles II. This collection features the first royally sanctioned printing of the Eikon Basilike. Directly approved by Charles II and licensed exclusively to London printer Richard Royston, this majestic and wide-margined folio printing was seen as the finest production of the late king's writings.Almack 61.         Les memoires de messire Philippe de Comines

A La Haye: Ches Arnout Leers, 1662. Fine. Ches Arnout Leers, A La Haye 1662, In-12 (9,5x16cm), (49) 600pp. (14), relié. - New edition edition which is due to Denys Godefroy. It is illustrated with two portraits of Louis XI and the Duke of Burgundy, and a leaflet table. Binding in full vellum nineteenth environment. Smooth spine with cold title. Mors split tail of 6 cm.

Louis & Daniel Elzevier, Amsterdam 1662 - In-16 (75x133 m). 8 ff. n. ch., 622 pp., 4 ff. n. ch.

[London]. 1662.. [3]-134,[1]pp.
