All'interno, 21 tavole fuori testo incise su rame, 1 tavola sinottica ripiegata.                                      a supervisione dello scienziato Athanasius Kircher presso l'università di Würzburg.

        Insula Matanino vulgo Martanico.

1657 - Amsterdam, 1657. Original colour. 470 x 570mm. A large map of Martinique, during the conquest of the island by the French. North on the compass rose errs by 45° East. In 1635 the 'Compagnie des Îles de l'Amérique' sent nearly a hundred settlers from St Kitts to Martinique, where they built Fort St Pierre. On the map the island is divided in two with 'Demeure de Francois' to the north and west, and 'Demeure de Sauvages' (the indigenous Caribs) over the rest of the island. The map does not mention Fort St Louis, a second fort built by the French in 1638. The Caribs were exterminated or exiled by 1660.

Adam in Eden: Or, natures paradise. The history of plants, fruits, herbs and flowers

London: Pr. by J. Streater for Nathaniel Brooke 8vo (27.7 cm, 10.9"). [10] ff., 396 [i.e., 446], 66, 551?-629, [25 (index & adv.)] pp.. 1657 Sole edition: A guide to plants and their medical uses, organized in the fashion "which Anatomists use in Mans body, which they divide into four parts, viz. The upper, middle, and lower Regions; and lastly, the Limbs" — so that the work begins with the walnut tree, because "the fruit of it doth resemble the Head in severall particulars" (p. 1). Coles was a proponent of => the doctrine of signatures, a theory that every plant had a signature or "simple" attribute that demonstrated its potential usage by way of similarity, association, or analogy; he had first addressed this philosophy in his Art of Simpling, and this present work is one of the fullest expressions of it since its origin with Paracelsus. Among the plants described here are => New World items such as tobacco, mechoacan, guaiacum, sarsaparilla, potatoes, Jerusalem artichokes, and cacao. The plant names are given in English, Latin, and Greek, with each entry offering a brief physical account of the plant, a list of the types (if any), the places and times in which it grows, the medieval humor with which it corresponds, and the medical uses for which it is appropriate. On this last, medical front, there is considerable => gynecological lore. The title-page is printed in red and black; the preface is followed by a poem in Coles's honor entitled "To His Esteemed, William Coles, upon his New Methodized History of PLANTS" and signed by one "Anthracius Botanophilus." This copy bears evidence of a print-shop mishap: The sheet on which p. 288 was imposed came into contact with another wet sheet, and some type transferred! Contemporary speckled calf, covers framed in blind double fillets, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label, board edges with gilt roll; binding with small scuffs, joints and edges rubbed with joint leather starting to show small cracks, spine with smudged remnants of hand-inked title in one compartment. Free endpapers and two preliminary blank leaves excised; fly-leaves with offsetting to margins. Age-toned throughout and intermittently spotted, with some eaves more notably darkened or foxed. A few corners dog-eared. A solid and not unhandsome copy of an interesting work.

        Colding Schlos und Stat.

Kobberstukket prospekt af Kolding. 35 x 48 cm. Johannes Janssonius erhvervede i 1653 Braun & Hogenbergs kobberplader. I 1657 udsendte Janssonius 8 bind med ialt 500 byprospekter. Nærværende kobberstik stammer fra denne udgivelse. Prospektat er første gang udgivet i femte bind af Braun & Hogenbergs "Civitates Orbis Terrarum".. Georg Braun og Frans Hogenbergs berømte værk "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" kom ialt til at bestå af 6 bind, udsendt i årene 1572-1617 i Köln. Her findes mere end 500 prospekter af - eller kort over - (især) europæiske byer.

0.0 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Basileae [Basel], Sumptibus et Typis Emanuelis König, 1657. Folio. Contemporary full mottled calf with 5 raised bands and title-labl to spine. Remains of a paper label to top of spine. Capitals worn, so cords are showing - lower ones a bit torn. Corners a bit worn, and minor worm holes to lower right corner of front board. Previous owner's name to front free end-paper. Title-page cut down (margins shaved off, not affecting printing) and mounted. Browning throughout, mostly light. Overall a fine copy. (10), 708, (90) pp. + 1 double-page woodcut plate. With 269 large (full and half page) woodcut illustrations.. Rare first edition thus, being first collected edition of Agricola's works on mines, metallurgy, mineralogy and geology creating in effect an opera omnia of his technological writings - containing the rare fourth (and final) Latin edition of Agricola's seminal "De Re Metallica", which is not only one of the most important and influential works on mining and metallurgy but also one of the most beautiful and lavishly illustrated, with hundreds of full and half--page woodcut illustrations throughout. The present edition constitutes the most complete collection of Agricola's works, and the present final Latin edition of "De Re Metallica" "is valuable because it contains few typographical or factual errors. The original woodcuts are present, but they are not quite as sharp after over a century of use through three previous editions. The book is necessarily a close paginary reprint as the woodcuts had to be accommodated to the text." (Neville). This forth and final edition of "De Re Metalicca" is essentially identical to the first three editions (1556,1561, 1621), but it is the only one to contain other works as well, namely the other five that are present, making it the most complete Agricola. "One of the first technological books of modern times. "De Re Metallica" embraces everything connected with the mining industry and metallurgical processes, including administration, prospecting, the duties of officials and companies and the manufacture of glass, sulphur and alum. The magnificent series of large woodcut illustrations by Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch add to its value. Agricola made an important contribution to physical geology. He recognized the influence of water and wind on the shaping of the landscape and gave a clear account of the order of the strata he saw in the mines." (PMM 79). Until the publication of "De Re Metallica", Pliny's work "Historia Naturalis" was the main source of information on metals and mining techniques, and Agricola made numerous references to his predecessor. Agricola described and illustrated how ore veins occur in and on the ground, making the work an early contribution to the developing science of geology. He described prospecting for ore veins and surveying in great detail, as well as washing the ores to collect the heavier valuable minerals, such as gold and tin.The work is also interesting in showing the many water mills used in mining, such as the machine for lifting men and material into and out of a mine shaft. He described several mining methods which are now obsolete, such as fire-setting, which involved building fires against hard rock faces. Georgius Agricola (1494-1555, birthname Georg Pawer) studied medicine and chemistry at Bologna, Venice and Padua. In 1527, he moved to Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, where he opened a medical practice. This locality, with the mining activities of the surrounding area, had a great impact on his daily life, and he began to study mining techniques and mineralogy which eventually - after 20 years work - resulted in the publication of "De Re Metallica"."De Re metallica" is considered a classic document of Renaissance metallurgy and metallurgy in general, and it remained unsurpassed for two centuries. In 1912, the Mining Magazine (London) published an English translation. The translation was made by Herbert Hoover, then an American mining engineer, later President of the United States.Wellcome II, p. 18Neville, vol. 1, p. 19Horblit 2a + b (First edition)Dibner 88 (First edition.)PMM 79 (First edition)
