        Colding Schlos und Stat.

Kobberstukket prospekt af Kolding. 35 x 48 cm. Johannes Janssonius erhvervede i 1653 Braun & Hogenbergs kobberplader. I 1657 udsendte Janssonius 8 bind med ialt 500 byprospekter. Nærværende kobberstik stammer fra denne udgivelse. Prospektat er første gang udgivet i femte bind af Braun & Hogenbergs "Civitates Orbis Terrarum".. Georg Braun og Frans Hogenbergs berømte værk "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" kom ialt til at bestå af 6 bind, udsendt i årene 1572-1617 i Köln. Her findes mere end 500 prospekter af - eller kort over - (især) europæiske byer.

0.0 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Basileae [Basel], Sumptibus et Typis Emanuelis König, 1657. Folio. Contemporary full mottled calf with 5 raised bands and title-labl to spine. Remains of a paper label to top of spine. Capitals worn, so cords are showing - lower ones a bit torn. Corners a bit worn, and minor worm holes to lower right corner of front board. Previous owner's name to front free end-paper. Title-page cut down (margins shaved off, not affecting printing) and mounted. Browning throughout, mostly light. Overall a fine copy. (10), 708, (90) pp. + 1 double-page woodcut plate. With 269 large (full and half page) woodcut illustrations.. Rare first edition thus, being first collected edition of Agricola's works on mines, metallurgy, mineralogy and geology creating in effect an opera omnia of his technological writings - containing the rare fourth (and final) Latin edition of Agricola's seminal "De Re Metallica", which is not only one of the most important and influential works on mining and metallurgy but also one of the most beautiful and lavishly illustrated, with hundreds of full and half--page woodcut illustrations throughout. The present edition constitutes the most complete collection of Agricola's works, and the present final Latin edition of "De Re Metallica" "is valuable because it contains few typographical or factual errors. The original woodcuts are present, but they are not quite as sharp after over a century of use through three previous editions. The book is necessarily a close paginary reprint as the woodcuts had to be accommodated to the text." (Neville). This forth and final edition of "De Re Metalicca" is essentially identical to the first three editions (1556,1561, 1621), but it is the only one to contain other works as well, namely the other five that are present, making it the most complete Agricola. "One of the first technological books of modern times. "De Re Metallica" embraces everything connected with the mining industry and metallurgical processes, including administration, prospecting, the duties of officials and companies and the manufacture of glass, sulphur and alum. The magnificent series of large woodcut illustrations by Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch add to its value. Agricola made an important contribution to physical geology. He recognized the influence of water and wind on the shaping of the landscape and gave a clear account of the order of the strata he saw in the mines." (PMM 79). Until the publication of "De Re Metallica", Pliny's work "Historia Naturalis" was the main source of information on metals and mining techniques, and Agricola made numerous references to his predecessor. Agricola described and illustrated how ore veins occur in and on the ground, making the work an early contribution to the developing science of geology. He described prospecting for ore veins and surveying in great detail, as well as washing the ores to collect the heavier valuable minerals, such as gold and tin.The work is also interesting in showing the many water mills used in mining, such as the machine for lifting men and material into and out of a mine shaft. He described several mining methods which are now obsolete, such as fire-setting, which involved building fires against hard rock faces. Georgius Agricola (1494-1555, birthname Georg Pawer) studied medicine and chemistry at Bologna, Venice and Padua. In 1527, he moved to Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, where he opened a medical practice. This locality, with the mining activities of the surrounding area, had a great impact on his daily life, and he began to study mining techniques and mineralogy which eventually - after 20 years work - resulted in the publication of "De Re Metallica"."De Re metallica" is considered a classic document of Renaissance metallurgy and metallurgy in general, and it remained unsurpassed for two centuries. In 1912, the Mining Magazine (London) published an English translation. The translation was made by Herbert Hoover, then an American mining engineer, later President of the United States.Wellcome II, p. 18Neville, vol. 1, p. 19Horblit 2a + b (First edition)Dibner 88 (First edition.)PMM 79 (First edition)

        Astrea: A Romance

      - London -H. Moseley, T. Drink and H. Herringman 1657 - An extremely scarce copy ofthe first English publication of Honore D'Urfe's Astrea, generally considered the first classical French novel. 'Translated by a person of quality': attributed to John Davies, (16251693). Davies's fluency in French came from the years he spent in France during the interregnum. He earned his living by translating works from French, Spanish, and Latin. With a vignette title, head pieces and capitals. Volumes II and III of three volumes. Honor d'Urfe, marquis de Valromey, comte de Chateauneuf (February 11, 1568 June 1, 1625) was a French novelist and miscellaneous writer. He was born at Marseille, and was educated at the College de Tournon. A partisan of the League, he was taken prisoner in 1595, and, though soon set free, he was again captured and imprisoned. During his imprisonment he read Ronsard, Petrarch and above all the Diana of Jorge de Montemayor and Tasso's Aminta. It was in Savoy that he conceived the plan of his novel Astrea, the scene of which is laid on the banks of the Lignon in his native province of Forez. It is a leisurely romance in which the loves of Celadon and Astrea are told at immense length with many digressions. The recently discovered circumstances of the marriages of the brothers have disposed of the idea that the romance is autobiographical in its main idea, but some of the episodes are said to be but slightly veiled accounts of the adventures of Henry IV. The shepherds and shepherdesses of the story are of the usual type in pastorals, and they discourse of love with a casuistry and elaborate delicacy that are by no means rustic. The first part of Astrea appeared in 1607, the second in 1610, the third in 1619, and in 1627 the fourth part was edited. In 1628 a fifth was added by D'Urfe's secretary Balthazar Baro. Possibly the single most influential work of 17th century French literature, Astrea has been called the novel of novels, partly for its immense length but also for the success it had throughout Europe: it was translated into a great number of languages and read at every royal court. It set the fashion temporarily in romance narratives. Condition: Rebound in half morocco bindings with marbled boards. Externally sound although atriflerubbed and bumped. Internally, firmly bound. Remarkably bright and clean for the age of these books, with minimal age toning, slight dusting, and just the odd spot. Copperplate ink signatures of Eliza Jeffreyes, onedated 1660 to title pages.         Frauenzimmer Belustigung.

- VD 17 23:287542M. Dünnhaupt 8.2. Bircher 5. Vgl. Goed. III 248, 10 und Hayn/G. II 672. Nicht bei Faber du Faur.

Cambridge: ex officina Joann. Field; impensis Guglielmi Nealand 1657 - [4],56p. with a final leaf of errata. ESTC lists eleven copies, of which only two are in North America, CSmH, ViU. First edition. Isaac Barrow's second publication, and the second of his two epitomes of Euclid, each designed as an undergraduate text. He eventually became master of Trinity College, Cambridge, and as a mathematician was regarded by his contemporaries as second only to Isaac Newton. Newton has often been described as Barrow's pupil (e.g. in the DNB), but this appears not to have been the case; by 1669, however, there was some sort of working relationship between the two of which the details are not entirely clear.         ANNALES ET HISTORIAE DE REBUS BELGICIS.

Joannis Blaeu, Amsterdam - 1657. First Edition, 4to, [11], 569pp, plus [22] page index and errata page, frontispiece engraving of Grotius. In Latin. Vellum binding and red leather spine label, binding ltly discolored and worn at edges, several pages ltly foxed, but about 95% of all pages very clean with little, or no foxing. The hinges are tight. A narrow section of the title page about one by seven inches, under the title, has been neatly removed and replaced with a neatly tipped in piece. It appears that whatever was removed was handwritten in ink because there are two or three letters remaining. Perhaps it was a valuable signature, or notes by a prominent person, or possibly nothing more than an ugly scribble. It couldn't have been the author's signature since his dates are 1583-1645. Grotius seems to have been a Renaissance man, whose learning and interest in many fields began at an early age. The book is a history of Belgium and the Netherlands from the period 1559 to 1609. It was begun in 1603, when the author was only twenty years of age, and was still being updated and revised at the time of his death. It was then brought out by his sons, Peter and Cornelius. THE BIBLIOGRAPHER'S MANUAL OF ENGLISH LITERATURE, by Lowndes, 1834, lists only the English edition of 1665. See also Brunet II 1767. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
