N. Sanson bei P. Mariette, 1656
1656. This important and attractive French map of China is based on an indigenous Chinese map copied by Jesuit, Matteo Ricci, and brought back to Rome in 1590 by his fellow Jesuit, Michele Ruggieri. The map extends to include the northern tip of the Philippines and a curiously curved Korean peninsula. Korea was usually shown as an island in the 17th century, so Sanson's depiction is a cartographic improvement. The Great Wall forms the northern boundary and the map is filled with rivers, mountains and villages. A detailed explanation panel in bottom right is surmounted by Pheme, the personification of fame and renown.

Truly unique handwritten French Sermons from 1656 painstakingly written in a small, neat hand, and elaborately disguised in box with marbled interior decorations made to look like a Thackery novel (Die Newcomes) from the outside. The 204 page sermons book is without boards though firmly bound, and is 10cm tall (Thackeray ?book? is 15cm tall), the pages are toned from the ink and there is a stain, possibly from water, over the top corner of the pages but the sermons are for the large part very readable assuming one has the patience and speaks the language. The first four pages and the final couple of pages are missing, plus a contemporary paper square obscures part of the text on Pages 5 + 6, corners folded over for the 1st 50 or so pages, includes separate title square, the board covering the hollowed out space in the book is slightly loose. An explanatory typewritten note explains that the sermons were from June-July, 1656. Dispatched from the UK same or next working day. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Salvator ROSA (Napoli 1615 - Roma 1673)
Etching with touches of drypoint, signed in plate lower right. Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, thin margins, in excellent condition. The Rosa has performed three prints of this type depicting the battle of newts, probably very congenial to his own way of interpreting the ancient heroic. It is clear in the artist the inspiration derived from the Battles of marine Gods by Andrea Mantegna, which also recreates the joyful spirit of pagan myth, and with similar compositions of Odoardo Fialetti. The works appear to have been made in the same period of Different figures, dating from between 1656 and 1658. Bartsch 12; Rotili 13; Wallace 93; Massari, Tra Mito ed Allegoria, p. 440, 166. 1656. London, 1656. First and Only edition. Inspired by the Puritans of Massachusetts? Booth, A., Attributed. Examen Legum Angliae: Or, The Laws of England Examined, By Scripture, Antiquity, And Reason. Cujus Author Anagrammatos Est, Ha Nomos Boa Hos Bary. London: Printed by James Cottrel, 1656. [xvi], 151, [11] pp. With an errata leaf. Lacking the blank leaf between pp. 102 and 105. Quarto (7-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Recent calf, gilt title and blind fillets to spine, endpapers renewed. Moderate toning, faint dampstaining to head of text block, light foxing to a few leaves. An appealing copy. $2,500. * Only edition. Legal reform was a priority when the Puritans assumed power during the Interregnum. Among many proposals put forward at this time were the establishment of courts for small claims, the conduct of pleading in English, the adoption of civil marriage and abolition of the benefit of clergy. These points are made in Examen Legum Angliae. Other proposals include capital punishment for adultery and partible inheritance with a double portion for the eldest son. As Haskins has shown, many ideas in this book could have been inspired by the laws of Massachusetts. "Although Puritans on both sides of the Atlantic turned constantly to the guidance of Scripture and drew upon a common fund of moral attitudes, the English proposals [recorded in the Examen Legum Angliae] bear so striking a resemblance to the laws in force in Massachusetts that it is tempting to conjecture that copies of the [Massachusetts] Code had reached the hands of the English reformers. Significantly, the author of … [Click Below for Full Description]
