[12], 239, [1], 255-286, 189-210, [2] pp. Title page printed in red and black. Small folio. Nineteenth-century quarter calf and marbled paper boards. Joints slightly rubbed; occasional spotting and browning to text. First edition, variant with "Livewell Chapman" in the imprint. [12], 239, [1], 255-286, 189-210, [2] pp. Title page printed in red and black. Small folio. A Classic of Utopian Thought. A celebrated work of political philosophy, which had a profound influence on America's founding fathers. "The written constitution, the unlimited use of the elective principle and the separation of powers are all points which may have been derived directly from the Oceana, while all the minor points of machinery, rotation, checks and balances, popular ratifications and special protection for the constitution seem to have been first formulated by Harrington" (A. E. Levett in Encyc. of Social Sciences). Although the Dedication, signed by Harrington, is to Cromwell, and despite the fact utopia commonwealth is decidedly anti-monarchist, evidently fears of political repercussions led to the dispersal of the printing among three different printers, resulting in irregularities of typography and pagination. ESTC, alone among sources, calls for a frontispiece portrait, but if one was indeed ever issued with it, it is very rare. No copy at auction has ever appeared with one, and neither the Pforzheimer … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: John Crook, 1656. First edition. Title printed in red and black, complete with errata leaf and initial and final blanks. [24], 151, [9] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary English blind-ruled calf, printer's waste endpapers; cloth clamshell case. Provenance: Robert Davies (early signature on title); with Bernard Quaritch (collation note on rear pastedown). Discreet repairs to joints, a wide-margined copy with shoulder-notes uncropped. First edition. Title printed in red and black, complete with errata leaf and initial and final blanks. [24], 151, [9] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. First edition, in a contemporary binding, of this selection of Saint Patrick's works, edited by the Anglo-Irish historian James Ware (1594-1666). An important text, containing theeditiones principes of St. Patrick's 'Confessio' and 'Epistola,' based on the 'Book of Armagh' and the manuscripts from the British Library (Cotton Nero E.1) and the Salisbury Cathedral Library. These are the two sole surviving manuscripts generally accepted as having been written by "The Apostle of Ireland." The first gives a short account of his life and mission. The 'Letter to Coroticus' (or 'Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus'), announces that he has excommunicated the Brittonic warrior Coroticus because he had taken some of Patrick's Christian converts into slavery while raiding in Ireland. ESTC records only five copies in the US: Folger, Harvard/Houghton, Huntington, UCLA/Clark, and Yale/Sterling. Scarce: according to auction records, only one copy has sold in at least the past fifty years. ESTC R15348; Wing P726. See New … [Click Below for Full Description]

ERPENIUS, Thomas.
Grammatica Arabica; cum varia praxios materia, cujus elenchum versa dabit pagella.Leiden, Johannes Maire, 1656. 2 parts in 1 volume. 4to. Mid 19th-century half tan calf, gold- and blind-tooled spine. [12], 172, "282" [= 284] pp. Third edition, expanded and edited by Jacobus Golius, of Erpenius's classic Arabic grammar. The present edition is augmented with an Arabic chrestomathy that Fabricius had published in 1638. Erpenius (1584-1624) revolutionized Arabic scholarship in Europe and made the Netherlands the most important European centre of Arabic studies before he died of the plague in 1624. His grammar remained the standard work in the field for two centuries. With the owner's inscription on a free endleaf, and a meticulously lettered note on p. 42 of the Lockman fabels. Some small defects, but otherwise in very good condition, with only a small marginal tear repaired and an occasional minor and mostly marginal spot or stain. Binding with a restoration at the head and foot of the spine but otherwise good, with slight wear at the hinges and extremities. The best edition of a classic Arabic grammar.
Paris, Cardin Besogne, 1656. 8vo. With engraved double page map of the Amazon Basin. Contemporary mottled calf, gold-tooled spine. [10], 190 pp. Reissue of an interesting work on the Amazon River by Blaise François de Pagan, count of Merveilles (1604-1655), dedicated to Cardinal Mazarin. The account is often considered only a slight variation on Acuña's work, but Pagan contradicts him on several points. The author probably had some travel accounts at his disposal which were unknown to Acuña (the reports by Teixera and Du Pará for example). The map drawn by Pagan is of great importance, since it shows the French colonial ambitions in the region. Our copy was originally in the library of the philosopher John Locke (1632-1704). It is inscribed by Locke and bears a press-mark, the date of purchase, the number of pages, the price paid for it (noted on page 11, as he always did), and a list of pages which interested him.Binding chafed, spine restored. Good copy of a rare work, with a most interesting provenance and complete with the map, often lacking. CHARRON PIERRE
A Leide, chez Iean Elsevier, 1656. Cm. 12,5, pp. (24) 621 (13) + 2 cc. bianche. Qualche sporadica e trascurabile arrossatura. Esemplare fresco e ben conservato. Cfr. Iccu; Willems, 775: "Seconde édition elzevirrienne de Charron". [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1656. wear to faux book and page loss to sermons. A wonderful, unique, fascinating and rare hand written book of French sermons from 1656 encased in a 'fake' book- Thackeray's Die Newcomes. There are 204 pages of neatly written sermon, the book is 10 cm tall. The first four or five pages and final couple of pages are missing. First and last pages have wear. The corners are folded on the first 50 or so pages. A square of paper with family crest (I think) has been stuck to the sermon's first page- possibly contemporary to the faux book or earlier. There is an explanatory typed leaflet stating the sermons were preached at Marsillac (Marcillac?) June - July 1656. There is also a maroon morocco leather panel which looks to be from a 19th century binding. The faux Thackeray book/box is 15 cm tall, 11 cm wide and 2.5 cm across the spine. It has wear- the half morocco leather is rubbed and there are splits along the spine hinge. The marbled lining paper is bright.

Daniel King, etc.
London: Daniel King, 1656. The Vale-Royal of England or, The County Palatine of Chester Illustrated. Wherein is contained a Geographical and Historical Description of that Famous County, with all its Hundreds and Seats of the Nobility, Gentry and Freeholders From 1656, the history and antiquities of the county of Chester in northwestern England, edited and introduced by Daniel King, with material by William Smith, William Webb, and Samuel Lee. Illustrations are by King and Wenceslaus Hollar. This text features a double-page map of the county, three textual illustrations, and two plates. Other copies of this book also include eleven plates with illustrations of coats of arms, but these seem never to have been included in this copy. One of the plate illustrations in this copy, a handsome depiction of the court of Hugh Lupus, Earle of Chester, does not appear in any other copy that I've located online. Also, interestingly, two original errata slips remain present. Additionally, at the end of this volume is A Short Treatise on the Isle of Man by James Chaloner, who was to become governor of the island. This 29-page treatise is illustrated with a coat of arms plate and a double-page map. Condition: The book was rebound in the early 1800s with new endpapers, flyleaves, and title page; the original title page is missing, so that the 1656 text opens on the dedication page. This page shows signs of repair. The covers have wear and some water damage, as seen in the photos; the water staining has almost no effect on the text. There are ownership marks on the front endpaper, dated 1836 … [Click Below for Full Description]

It the second work Glauber to defend himself against his former partner Christoph Farner of Loechgau (1616-1683) their partnership had dissolved with much acrimony. The first was: Apologia odeer Vertheidigung gegen Christoph Farner’s Lügen (Frankfurt am Main, Thomas Mathias Götze, 1655). Ad 2: First edition of the one of several publications he wrote to promote his "invention" of a universal medicine: drinkable gold.Ad 3: First edition of three dialogues between three specialists once again promoting Glauber’s universal tincture in glowing terms. It gives a clear insight in the philosophy and mental attitudes of Glauber’s colleagues.Ad 4: First edition of Glauber’s Gold-maker’s book.Ad 5: First edition of an account of the various ways to purify metals with the help of fire, written in the wake of Paracelsus’s Coelum philosophorum. Like the souls in Purgatory, metals will be purified by fire: this was an essential step, because Glauber’s tincture would not convert them to other metals unless they were pure.Ad 6: First edition of an account of Glauber’s laboratory, revealing all its secrets and describing all the instruments and furnaces. This copy includes Johannes Janssonius van Waesberge’s 15-page stocklist, Catalogus librorum, lacking in some copies (Gugel calls it extremely rare).Ad 7: First edition of the fifth part of an alchemical work on the medicines and methods invented by Glauber. Stefano Della Bella (Firenze 1610 - Firenze 1664)
MENNES, John, Sir (1599-1671); SMITH, James (1604/5–1667)
London : printed by H.G. for Henry Herringman, and are to be sold at his shop, at the signe of the Anchor in the New Exchange, 1656. Second edition. Octavo. Pagination pp. [6], 101, [1], collated and complete with 4 leaves of publisher's advertisements at rear not called for on ESTC. [Wing, M1711]. Later red morocco with Cheney family monogram in gilt to front and rear boards, rubbed and joints cracked, Edward Cheney's bookplate to paste-down. Light browning to text, minor repairs to several edges and loss to G2 (two words supplied in manuscript), upper margins close trimmed just touching some headlines and page numbers. Pencil annotations and ink underlining to a few pages. [Wing M1711]. This influential and celebrated verse miscellany contains a mixture of learning, satire, obscenity, and wit. It includes a number of poems by the staunch royalists, Sir John Mennes (1599-1671) and James Smith (1605-1667). Mennes was a naval officer. Smith was a clergyman who was also much admired for his poetry and his wit. Their poetic exchanges were both entertaining and subversive. They weaved humour, ribaldry, and political references in to what also served as royalist propoganda. 'Musarum' was first published in 1655, with this second edition following in 1656. It contains the verse of Mennes and Smith together with a number of unattributed poems, whether by them or others has been much debated over the years. Their work was highly influential on the development of Restoration genres including the burlesques of Samuel Butler and the travesties of Charles Cotton. QUILLET (Claude).
94384 QUILLET (Claude). [Click Below for Full Description]

DESCARTES (René).
108614 DESCARTES (René). Musicae Compendium. 1656 DESCARTES (René). Musicae Compendium. Amstelodami, apud Joannem Janssonium Juniorem, 1656. in-4. 2ff. 34pp. (1f.blanc). Demi-veau moderne genre ancien. "After graduating in law from the University of Poitiers, as a gentleman volunteer in the army of Prince Maurice of Nassau in 1618 (Descartes) met Isaac Beeckman at Breda. Beeckman aroused him to self-discovery as a scientific thinker and introduced him to a range of problems, especially in mechanics and acoustics, the subject of his first work, the Compendium Musicae of 1618; published posthumously in 1650" (D.S.B.)."The Compendium is both a treatise on music and a study in methodology. In it Descartes shows himself to be a link between the musical humanists in the 16th century - he was influenced particularly by Zarlino, whom he cited - and the scientists of the 17th. The work is noteworthy as an early experiment in the application of empirical, deductive, scientific approach to the study of sensory perception and being among the earliest attempts to define the dual relationship between the physical and physiological phenomena of music." (Special Collection Columbia University). Petite mouillure marginale, quelques rousseurs. D.S.B., IV, p.51.

CALEPINO, Ambrogio
Lugduni: sumptibus Philippi Borde, Laurentii Arnaud, & C, 1656. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Ambrogio Calepino was a 15th-century Italian lexicographer who is remembered only by his Latin dictionary. It was reprinted constantly throughout the 16th-century including more than a dozen issues by the famous Aldine Press alone! Following the Aldine issues, the 17th-century printings featured many other languages including Hebrew, Greek, Gallic, Italian, German, Spanish, Polish, English, and Belgian dialects.

Taken together, they are a virtual legal encyclopedia of the law as it stood in Coke's lifetime. The first Institutes, better known as Coke on Littleton, contains the text of Sir Thomas Littleton's Tenures with extensive commentary. First published in 1628, it was a standard work for decades and was often used as a textbook. "If Bracton first began the codification of the common law, it was Coke who completed it.... GALILEI (Galileo).
In Bologna, per gli H.H. del Dozza, 1656. 2 parties en 1 volume in-4. Frontispice. 7ff. + 2ff. 68pp. + 2ff. 264pp. Cf. Bibliografia Galileiana, dans l'édition des œuvres complètes de Florence, 1856: "I diversi Trattati avendo numerazione e frontespizio particolare, ne sono stati spesso distratti dal corpo intero delle Opere. Spesso ancora sono … [Click Below for Full Description]

DESCARTES (René).
Beeckman aroused him to self-discovery as a scientific thinker and introduced him to a range of problems, especially in mechanics and acoustics, the subject of his first work, the Compendium Musicae of 1618; published posthumously in 1650" (D.S.B.). "The Compendium is both a treatise on music and a study in methodology.
