Jacob Bšhme (1575-1624), German visionary and founder of the Behmenist sects, was a master shoemaker and amateur chemist who claimed to have received visions from the Holy Spirit on at least three striking occasions. At first and at the insistence of the clergy, he refrained from recording his revelations, but eventually he succumbed to his experiences and poured out a wealth of books, many of them in the last five years of his life. His works were immensely popular in England, and it has been noted that much of Quaker doctrine borrows from Bšhme's works and ideas. He is aclaimed as an alchemist & Rosicrucian figure. A self-taught mystic theologian and philosopher, Boehme believed that both good and evil were from God, they kept the cosmos in balanc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nicolas Sanson
Pierre Mariette. Handsome original 1656 antique engraved hand colored map of the northern portion of South America, printed more than 350 years ago. The map was drawn by Nicolas Sanson, engraved by Jean Somer Pruthenus, and published by Pierre Mariette, Paris, 1656. The image area measures a generous 40 x 54 cm [15¾" x 21¼"]. The title is displayed in a decorative cartouche at the upper right: Terre Ferme ou sont les Governations, ou Gouvernemens de Terre Ferme, Cartagene, Ste. Marthe, Rio de la Hache, Venezuela, Nouvelle Andalusie, Popayan, Nouveau Royme. de Grenade, &c. The coverage area extends from the Isthmus of Panama to Guyana, through Colombia and Venezuela, including part of Brazil and the Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Margarita, Tobago, and Trinidad. The map traces the course of the Orinoco River and locates Manõa or El Dorado on Lake Parime — the fabled "City of Gold" that inspired several unsuccessful expeditions in the late 1500s, two of which were led by Sir Walter Raleigh. Condition: This map is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no rips, tears, or creases. There is a center fold, as issued, and the map is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. This is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. The title cartouche identifies Nicolas Sanson as "Geographer to the King." He is today acknowledged by many as the "Father of French cartography."

Daniel King, etc.
United Kingdom: Daniel King, 1656. The Vale-Royal of England or, The County Palatine of Chester Illustrated. Wherein is contained a Geographical and Historical Description of that Famous County, with all its Hundreds and Seats of the Nobility, Gentry and Freeholders From 1656, the history and antiquities of the county of Chester in northwestern England, edited and introduced by Daniel King, with material by William Smith, William Webb, and Samuel Lee. Illustrations are by King and Wenceslaus Hollar. This text features a double-page map of the county, three textual illustrations, and two plates. Other copies of this book also include eleven plates with illustrations of coats of arms, but these seem never to have been included in this copy. One of the plate illustrations in this copy, a handsome depiction of the court of Hugh Lupus, Earle of Chester, does not appear in any other copy that I've located online. Also, interestingly, two original errata slips remain present. Additionally, at the end of this volume is A Short Treatise on the Isle of Man by James Chaloner, who was to become governor of the island. This 29-page treatise is illustrated with a coat of arms plate and a double-page map. Condition: The book was rebound in the early 1800s with new endpapers, flyleaves, and title page; the original title page is missing, so that the 1656 text opens on the dedication page. This page shows signs of repair. The covers have wear and some water damage, as seen in the photos; the water staining has almost no effect on the text. There are ownership marks on the front endpaper, da … [Click Below for Full Description]

Salvator ROSA (Napoli 1615 - Roma 1673)
Etching with touches of drypoint, signed in plate lower right. Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, thin margins, in excellent condition. The Rosa has performed three prints of this type depicting the battle of newts, probably very congenial to his own way of interpreting the ancient heroic. It is clear in the artist the inspiration derived from the Battles of marine Gods by Andrea Mantegna, which also recreates the joyful spirit of pagan myth, and with similar compositions of Odoardo Fialetti. The works appear to have been made in the same period of Different figures, dating from between 1656 and 1658. Bartsch 12; Rotili 13; Wallace 93; Massari, Tra Mito ed Allegoria, p. 440, 166. Dimensioni 166x108.

HEVELIUS, Johannes
1656. Fine engraved vignette on title & four engraved plates. 3 p.l., 40 pp., 1 leaf. Folio, attractive antique panelled calf (minor browning, the leaf "Ordo Figuram" extended). Danzig: Sumptibus Autoris, 1656. First edition and an important presentation copy, inscribed by Hevelius (1611-87) on the title-page to Athanasius Kircher (1601-80): "Praeclarissimo ac Celeberrimo Viro P. Athanasis Kirchero S.J. amico honorando.Autor." Near contemporaries, the two scientists had a warm and lasting relationship, which began when Hevelius visited Kircher in Avignon in 1632 and which continued for many years. From 1627 to 1630, Hevelius privately studied astronomy, instrument making, and engraving with Peter Krüger, a professor of mathematics and astronomy at the Danzig Academy. Following two years of legal studies at Leyden (1630-31), Hevelius travelled to Paris, where he met Gassendi and Peiresc, and then went on to Avignon to meet Kircher, who already had established quite a scientific reputation for himself. While there, Hevelius used his skills as an engraver to prepare the frontispiece for Kircher's second book, Primitiae Gnomonicae Catoptricae, published in 1635. As they continued in their scientific careers, Hevelius in Danzig and Kircher in Rome, the two maintained an active correspondence on scientific matters (14 letters from Hevelius to Kircher are known to survive). Kircher established himself as a clearinghouse and disseminator of news, gathering reports on eclipses and other astronomical phenomena, and supplying astronomers including Hevelius, Cassini, and Riccioli with … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Évreux (Normandy), 1656. Manuscript on parchment, 18mo (110 × 80 mm), 26 leaves, including two blanks both at front and rear. Nine lines per page in a large roman hand, rubrics. Some thumbing, one leaf with original stitched repair to a marginal flaw. Original sprinkled calf, gilt panelled spine, remnants of two brass clasp fittings, marbled endpapers. Slightly rubbed and soiled. Prayers and hymns for vespers on the feast of Saint Aquilinus (19 October), made for the curates of his chapel at Évreux. Aquilin was born at Bayeux c. 620 and served in the army of Frankish king Clovis II. He married but vowed to devote his life to God and the service of the poor. The couple settled at Évreux before he was named bishop, wherupon he built a cell by the cathedral and lived as a hermit. He died circa 695 and the oratory where he was buried was named after him, it remained the site of his veneration until its destruction under applied bombardment in 1943/4. The manuscript was made by one Louis Fromont for his uncle Mathurin in 1656. The later inscriptions indicate it was bequeated by the curate Le Goulx around 1679. . HARRINGTON, James.
London: Printed by J. Streater, for Livewell Chapman, 1656. Folio (272 x 174 mm). Contemporary ruled sheep, expertly rebacked to style preserving original spine, contemporary manuscript title to top edge, edges sprinkled. Contemporary inked notations to free pastedowns, single contemporary correction to p. 151. Discreet restoration to corners and board edges with sheep replaced in places. Light browning to contents as is usual with this title, title and following 3 leaves a little chipped at foot and along fore-edge, some finger-soiling, minor stain at fore edge of last couple of leaves, blank lower corner of pages 3-4 torn away, small hole to pp. 63-64 with loss of a couple of characters only, a little marginal worming, touching one or two printed shoulder notes; withal a very good copy. Title page printed in black and red. First edition of Harrington's utopian masterpiece, written between 1654 and 1656, publication of which was hindered by political obstruction. Typeset by three different printers to avoid seizure, the work was published with two variant title pages, one having the imprint "printed by J. Streater for Livewell Chapman", the other "printed for D. Pakeman". A portrait frontispiece is sometimes found, but a clear majority of known copies, including this one, do not have it. A convinced Republican, Harrington's Oceana - dedicated to Oliver Cromwell - described "a Utopian State with a written constitution, providing for a bicameral legislature, rotation in office, the indirect election of a president, secret ballot, and other ideas much in advance of their time … [Click Below for Full Description]

HARRINGTON James
1656. First edition. Small folio (265 x 185mm). [12], 239, [1, blank], 255-286, 189-210, [1], [1 blank] pp. Bound circa 1740 in half calf, comb-marbled boards, spine tooled in gilt on a dark-stained background. Housed in a modern cloth slipcase. London, Printed by J. Streater, for Livewell Chapman. A staunch Republican, Harrington?s Oceana described ?a Utopian State with a written constitution, providing for a bicameral legislature, rotation in office, the indirect election of a president, secret ballot, and other ideas much in advance of their time, some of which influenced the framers of the U.S. Constitution? (Walker, Oxford Companion to Law, p. 555). ?Oceana is one of those works that transcend their immediate context. The book?s historical significance is that it marks a moment of paradigmatic breakthrough, a major revision of English political theory and history in the light of concepts drawn from civic humanism and Machiavellian Republicanism? (Pocock, Machiavellian Moment, p. 384). ?Other than the Utopia [of Thomas More], this is perhaps the most famous attempt at envisioning a model commonwealth. It has been consulted at various times by those who have planned new states and commonwealths? (Pforzheimer). Written between 1654 and 1656, the publication of Oceana was hindered by political obstruction, with the type set by three different printers to avoid seizure, the work was published with two variant title-pages, one having the imprint ?printed by J. Streater for Livewell Chapman?, the other ?printed for D. Pakeman? The Pakeman imprint is considered to be scarcer. … [Click Below for Full Description]
