      8. Gest. gefalt. Frontisp., 384 SS., 16 (2 gef.) Kupfertaf. HLdr. mit Rverg. EDITION ORIGINALE: Bitting 203 Drexel 145 Georg 1657 Horn/A. 451 Oberlé, Fastes 135 Schraemli 61 Simon 805 Sotheby's, Schraemli 219 Sotheby's, Westbury 235 Vicaire 427f. - Durchgehend stock- u. wasserfl., Taf. beschnitten.- Rebacked with original spine laid down. Spotting to edges and some water stains.

Deckel grossflächig gebräunt, Neue Widmung a. Vs., erstes Frontispiz fehlt, Papier tlw. gebräunt, tlw. etw. stockfl. Sinold: Philipp Balthasar S. gen. v. A. vielfach umgearbeitet worden ist. L`Astrologue Amoureux.

Paris, Chez Louis Chamhourdy, 1657. - Engr. frontispice, [10], 67 p., with some figs., 12°, Modern half-calf with 2 lettering pieces Frontispice by Louis Spirinx (1596-1669). - Anonymus Author; Gardner and Westcott ("A catalogue raisonné of works on the occult sciences", 1903, No. 521) name a very similar title: "[Godenot] L`Astrologue Amoureux contenant la facon de cultiver, planter, et recueillir tout ce qui seme en amour. i2mo. Paris, 1657. Collation (iv) 68 pp." So the author could be someone called Godenot (?). - It seems, the book was also published with two other Parisian editors the same year: Étienne Loyson and de Luyne. (p.1) - Bookplate by Robert J. Hayhurst; frontispice slightly trimmed at the fore-edge; few tiny spots; bound within are around 100 white sheets (after the text); all together a very nice copy! Also this book has an interesting provenance, it was part of the collection of Robert Lenkiewicz (sold as lot no. 20 in the Sotheby`s Auction catalogue of 20th Nov. 2003 "Witchcraft and the Occult: Selected Books from the Collection of the late Robert Lenkiewicz").

Cesena Neri 1657. - Scarce first edition of this 17th-century survey of Italian painting, and a valuable document for developing Baroque "gusto" by a cultivated amateur. Scannelli follows Mancini’s tripartite division of Italian schools—Roman, Venetian and Lombard, and in an age in which microcosms were everywhere, he compared the whole of Italian painting to a body, likening Corregio to the brain, Titian to the heart, Raphael to the liver (!), and Veronese to the organs of reproduction. According to the Dictionary of Art, Il Microcosmo "stands alongside the works of Mario Boschini (La carta del navegar pittoresco, Venice, 1660) and of Luigi Pellegrino Scaramuccia (Le finezze dei penelli italiani, Padua, 1674), both of whom quoted him. Scannelli’s treatise represents a reaction against the notion, formulated by Giorgio Vasari, that the art of Florence was pre-eminent throughout Italy. He reevaluated the Lombard-Emilian school, led by Correggio, seeing in it an ideal synthesis of the finest achievements of the Venetian (Titian) and of the Roman-Tuscan (Raphael) schools. In taste, he showed classicist inclinations, modified by a liking for vivacity and naturalism, qualities well represented in the art of his ideal painter, Correggio" (Franco Bernabei, DA XXVIII.33-34). Little is known about the author, save that he was a priest and a physician, that he served at the court of Mantua until Francesco I d’Este died, and that he traveled to Milan, Rome and Venice. * Besterman, Old Art Books, p. 93; Schlosser-Magnino p. 614 (rather harsh elsewhere); Cicognara 204; Hollis BAL 6360 (specifying frontispiece and 18 preliminaries); not in Berlin Katalog.         Londinopolis; An Historicall Discourse or Perlustration Of the City of London, The Imperial Chamber, and chief Emporium of Great Britain: whereunto Is added another of the City of Westminster, With The Courts of Justice, Antiquities, and new Buildings thereunto belonging. [With] Map of London by Rutger Hermannides

London : J Streater, for Henry Twiford, George Sawbridge, Thomas Dring, and John Place, 1657 A very good copy of Londinopolis by James Howell, with additional loose map of London by Rutger Hermannides, probably removed from a copy of Magna Britannia. James Howell, (c1594-1666) navigated his way with some difficulty through the changing allegiances of the English Civil War, Commonwealth and Restoration, spending 8 years in prison between 1643 and 1650. He attempted various court positions, becoming Royal Historiographer to Charles II in 1660, but made most of his living from writing. Londinopolis describes the main landmarks and areas of London with outlines of their history. Lowell is frank that he has 'fetched' most of his materials from others and it is considered that much of the content comes from Stow. This copy of Londinopolis is in a later 1800's full leather binding by H Woodburn. This has a delicate blind tooled border of leaves to the boards; raised bands, blind tooled designs and title label to spine. It is showing some wear to the front hinge and edges and has a small scuff but is otherwise in very good clean condition. There is an ink signature 'Stouthall' to the front pastedown endpaper. Contents: initial blank; frontispiece by Abraham Bosso; title page in red and black inks; blank; poem in latin and english; dedication to the 'Renowned City of London' 2pp; Some Advertisements to the Reader 2pp; The Chiefest Materials 2pp; doublepage panoramic view of London by Holler; text pp 1-407 with decorative initial capitals; blank; index 6+pp; Catalogue of Mr Howell's works 1p; more works 1p; blank with pasted note by Stouthall. It is likely that this is Wing variant H3091. There are numerous pagination errors, but no loss of text eg p 85 to 84, to 95; 123 to 128; 128 to 311The title page has part of a signature at the top suggesting that the page edges were trimmed down when it was rebound. There is some marking to the bottom of the Advertisements, and to the top of p 399, but the contents are generally very clean. The paper is lightly toned. The loose map, which measures 26.5 x 13.5 cm is similarly toned but clean.

First edition of this Arabic Bible, sponsored in part by the British and Foreign Bible Society and the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. => Printer Sarah Hodgson's impressive accomplishment here, produced far from the center of British printing in London, marked a new growth in English printing in Arabic script. The main title-page is in English, with the rest of the volume (including the separate title-page for the New Testament) entirely in Arabic. The edition was supervised at first by Joseph Dacre Carlyle, professor of Arabic at Cambridge, and after Carlyle's death by Henry Ford, Lord Almoner's Reader in Arabic at Oxford; the translation was based on that of the London Polyglot of 1657. The translators involved in that 17th-century project were Saadiah Ben Fayum

Ribeira Sacra Vineyard - Galicia - Settling of Accounts between Co-owners of the Vineyard

Early manuscript describing a legal dispute over a vineyard in Monforte de Lemos, Spain. Manuscript in Spanish written on stamped paper. Folio, 4 pages. Double leaf measuring 22 x 31 cm, officially rated paper bearing the duty stamp of 68 maravedís. An early example of the settling of accounts between two co-owners of a vineyard in Monforte de Lemos, a town which today is at the heart of the beautiful Ribeira Sacra wine region. In 1657, the local court found in favour of the Abbot, D. Pedro Díaz de Balboa, who owned a quarter of Valina vineyard against the majority owner, Andrés Fernández. The judge ordered that the vineyard and its contents be catalogued and sold by public auction. Díaz de Balboa was to receive the amount he was owed by Fernández which amounted to 6 bushels of wheat and 6 canados of wine. Any further debts as well as the costs of the proceedings were also to be deducted but any remaining profits from the sale were to be returned to Fernández. This document also includes a detailed list of the costs of the trial which amounted to 2,294 maravedís [a medieval Spanish copper coin currency]. The duty stamp is a fine example of levys imposed on Spanish civilians during and after the Thirty Years' War. After 1637 all official documents were required to be made on stamped paper (papel sellado), obstensibly to guarantee authenticity, but in actuality to generate revenue for the crown. At first there were four classes of paper, designed for use with specific types of documents. Typically, the monetary value of the transaction determined the class of stamped paper, and ultimately the revenue collected by the government. This document was written on the second highest quality, therefore the transaction was of notable monetary value. Quality 1 paper would have cost 272 maravedís. Ribeira Sacra is a Spanish Denominación de Origen (DO) (Denominación de Orixe in Galician) for wines located in the south of the province of Lugo and in the north of the province of Ourense, in Galicia, Spain. It extends over the territories of 17 different municipalities that conform a zone and entity called Ribeira Sacra, which could be translated as "Sacred Shore". The vineyards are planted on the steep slopes of the valleys and canyons of the rivers Miño and Sil. It is generally believed that grape growing and wine production were introduced to the area by the ancient Romans. It is said that the legendary spiced Vinos de Amandi were shipped to Rome along with the lampreys fished out of the river Miño, to be served at the table of the emperor. It is believed that Ribeira Sacra takes its name from 18 monasteries and hermitages that were founded in the early Middle Ages between the 8th and 12th centuries and which are located in the inaccessible river valleys. It was the monks who replanted the vineyards for their own consumption and maintained the grape-growing and wine-producing tradition until modern times.

Artist: Janssonius Haeredes; issued in: Amsterdamca 1657 - - technic: Copper print ; colorit: original colored ; condition: Tear on upper and lower margin perfectly restored ; size in cm : 41 x 51 - description: Map shows the island of Ceylan with decorative wind roses, offshore ships and two cartouches. - Vita of the artist: Johannes Janssonius (Jansson),( 1588- 1664) Amsterdam was born in Arnhem, the son of Jan Janszoon the Elder,a publisher and bookseller. In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of Jodocus Hondius. He produced his first maps in 1616 of France and Italy. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with English County Maps, a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name Atlas Major, there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. It included a description of most of the cities of the world (Townatlas), of the waterworld (Atlas Maritimus in 33 maps), and of the Ancient World (60 maps). The eleventh volume was the Atlas of the Heavens by Andreas Cellarius. Editions were printed in Dutch, Latin, French, and a few times in German.

"City plan taken from ""Theatrum praecipuarum urbium"", the famous city - plans book realized by Janssonius after Braun & Hogenberg's ""Civitates Orbis Terrarum"". The work was published in 1657, with 500 plates depicting cities from all over the world. In opposition to his main competitors, the Blaeus, to realize his project, Janssonius used the plates of former cartographers and publishers. In 1653 he bought from Abraham Hogenberg the plates of the ""Civitates orbis Terrarum"" which have been then included in his work. As far as Dutch cities, he had new plates realized after Johannes Blaeu's Atlas, published in 1649. The plates in the Fifth Volume, the one about Italy entitled ""Theatrum celebriorum urbium Italiae.."", Janssonius used the plates realized by Jodocus Hondius for his ""Italia Hodierna.."" in 1627. (8), 146, (2). Contemp. vellum. All edges sprinkled in red. A milestone of French Arabist scholarship in the 17th century. I: First French edition of the "General History of the World" ("Kitab al-Magmu' al-mubarak") by Girgis al-Makin ibn al-'Amid, known in the Latin tradition as Georgius Elmacinus. Born in Cairo in 602 AH (1205 AD) to a Coptic civil servant in the War Ministry, he later served in a similar function in Syria. His chronicle had previously been translated into Latin (by Erpenius) and English (by Purchas); the work "for the first time provided wider circles in the west with an overview of Islamic history from its beginnings to the Crusades and acquainted them with the prime of the Baghdad Califate, previously almost unreceived, through an account ultimately based on Tabari" (cf. Fück). - II/III: First French translation (issued in two parts) of this important critical, at times even satirical eyewitness account of the life of Tamerlane (Timur Lenk), the great Turkish conqueror of the 14th century. "A frequently malicious account, in spite of the panegyrical form in which it is couched" (cf. GAL). Based on the original Arabic text written in 1437-38 by the Syrian author Ahmad lbn 'Arabshah who was secretary to Sultan Ahmad of Baghdad. In the late 16th century Timur was made famous in Europe through Christopher Marlowe's play "Tamburlaine" (published in 1590).
