Description: From the set of 12 views of Rotterdam surrounding the famous wallmap of Rotterdam. State: Only state. Ref: Hollstein 10.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Johannes de Vou and Romeyn de Hooghe' after an anonymous artist. Johannes de Vou (c. 1655/65-1707) was active in Rotterdam as a etcher and naval architect around 1680-1700. Romeyn de Hooghe (bapt. 10 September 1645 10 June 1708) was an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque, painter, sculptor, engraver and caricaturist. De Hooghe was born in Amsterdam. He was skilled as an etcher, draughtsman, painter, sculptor and medalist. He is best known for political caricatures of Louis XIV and propagandistic prints supporting William of Orange. During his career, de Hooghe produced over 3500 prints. He also illustrated books, and his illustrations can be found in some of the most important texts of his period. The Hieroglyphica of Merkbeelden der oude volkeren (1735) was a well known emblem book and sourcebook for classical mythology and its iconography. According to Houbraken he was particularly good at inventive arrangements of subjects in engravings. He was also a gifted painter and painted large panels for the rooms of the mayor's office in Enkhuizen and a room in the estate of Mattthijs van den Broeck in Dubbeldam. Houbraken disapproved of his dissolute lifestyle however, and felt that despite an enormous talent, as he grew older, he engraved shameful subjects that were … [Click Below for Full Description]

BARON, Robert.
London: Printed for Humphrey Moseley [1655?]. 8vo., pp. [16], 264; some pen trials to title page, damp-staining to upper left corner throughout; otherwise a good copy in nineteenth-century half red morocco and marbled boards; marbled endpapers.First edition of Baron's last literary endeavour, a violent revenge tragedy influenced by Jonson's Catiline, mostly in verse, packed with political intrigue, murders 'and Seraglio's too', all fitting subjects for its exotic setting. Not intended for performance, which been impossible during the Commonwealth, it was meant instead to be 'read and carefully digested' and is, 'by the standards of its day, an exceptionally long and elaborate play' (Birchwood, Staging Islam in England).Mirza is a virtuous prince whose father, the murderous King Abbas, attempts to assassinate him but relents just as Mirza is being throttled. Alive, but in the palace dungeons, Mirza plots his revenge. Discovering that his daughter, Fatima, is now the favourite of her grandfather Abbas's immense seraglio, Mirza calls her to his cell and strangles her. After Mirza takes his own life, the grieving Abbas relents of his wickedness before dying.Besides its colourfully incestuous and bloodthirsty plot, Mirza is notable for the author's claims to historical authenticity: it is a tragedy 'really acted in Persia' – its source being the letters written from Persia by the diplomat Dodmore Cotton, also the source for John Denham's similar tragedy, The Sophy (1641). The historical 'truth' of the play is supported by over two hundred pages of annotations, by which Baron off … [Click Below for Full Description]

They believe the deities have deemed them predestined to do heroic deeds.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Suite of 4 prints depicting the 4 seasons as compared to the stages in a married life: spring-bride, summer-wife, autumn-mother, winter-widow. These are in fact the title pages to 4 sections in the works of Cats. Pages have print and text on front and rear. Original copperplate engraving on a verge type hand laid paper. Sheet has image and text on front and rear. Description: This old antique engraved copperplate print and accompanying poetry originate from 'Alle de Wercken van den heere Jacob Cats.', (Complete Works of Jacob Cats) which was published from 1655 on. This plate is from a 1726 edition. The emblems depict lessons of many aspects of life. Each emblem typically has more than one meaning as Cats' poems talk about ethics, wisdom and morale from the perspective of love, religion and society. His work has often been critisized, but contains a treasure of truth and symbolism, often as relevant as it was during the times of it's creation. We might carry this item from a smaller size edition and a 19th c. ed. with steel engravings as well. Inquire if interested.Artists and Engravers: The Author is Jacob Cats, also known as Father Cats (born Nov. 10, 1577, Brouwershaven, Zeeland, Spanish Netherlands - died Sept. 12, 1660, Zorgvliet, near The Hague) Dutch poet. A magistrate and high official, he was enormously popular as a writer of emblem books, consisting of woodcuts or engravings with verses possessing a moral. His Mirror of Old and New Times (1632) contains many quotations that have become household sayings in the Netherlands, and he used it to express the ethical con … [Click Below for Full Description]

Plate: 'Tiencienwey'. This plate shows a view on the Chinese city of Tiencienwey or Tientsin. Also depicted are many ships. Copperplate engraving on a verge type hand laid paper. Description: This attractive original old antique print / plate originates from a German edition of : 'Gezandtschap der Nederlandtsche Oost-Indische Compagnie . aan den grooten Tartarischen Cham, den tegenwoordigen keizer van China.' (Nieuhof's China expedition from 1655-1657.) by J. Nieuhof. This German edition was published in 1666, a year after the first Dutch edition of 1665. The work was famous for its wealth of engravings, while the text was based on earlier (Jesuit) sources as well.Artists and Engravers: Johan / Jan / Johannes Nieuhof / Nieuhoff / Neuhof (1618-1672) was a Dutch traveler who wrote about his journeys to Brazil, China and India. The most famous of these was a trip of 2,400 km from Canton to Peking in 1655-1657, which enabled him to become an authoritative Western writer on China. Johan Nieuhof was born in Uelsen, Germany, of which his father (originally from Zwolle) was mayor. Nieuhof left for Brazil in 1640 as a reserve officer-candidate - from then on, barring two short family visits in 1658 and 1671, he spent all the rest of his life abroad. After an adventurous career in the service of the Dutch East India Company (or VOC) - between 1660 and 1667 he occupied posts in India and on Ceylon - he then lived in Batavia until 1670. He then disappeared without trace on Madagascar, traveling in a sloop from which he had landed to seek drinking water. The engravings are made after Ni … [Click Below for Full Description]

Uno de ellos llegó a la localidad que lleva el nombre de Leguizamón fundando el solar del mismo nombre, en el barrio de Legizamon (Etxebarri-Doneztebek, cerca de Galdakao).
