DIOGENES LAERTIUS
Tot Rotterdam, By Joannes Naeranus, 1655. 12mo (XXIV),407,(1 blank) p., frontispiece. Vellum 13 cm The greatest known source of information about the philosophers of antiquity (Ref: Geerebaert 31,1: first translation into Dutch; OiN. 164: 'reeks fragm.'; Sub Rosa 6254) (Details: 5 thongs laced through the cover. Engraved frontispiece, which depicts a gathering of philosophers, and the meeting between Alexander the Great and the philosopher Diogenes) (Condition: Vellum soiled & spotted, showing a real patina of age. Lower margins a bit narrow) (Note: This book offers an anthology (kort begrijp) of the 'Vitae Philosophorum' of the Greek author Diogenes Laertius, who probably lived in the first half of the 3rd cent. A.D. The 'Vitae Philosophorum' is a compendium full of biographies of the ancient philosophers, from Thales to Epicurus, and their doctrines. Diogenes Laertius drew his material from earlier compilations. His reliability and value differ from passage to passage. Some give invaluable information, other passages offer mere caricature. (OCD 2nd ed. p. 348/49.) The excerpts from Diogenes fill the first 110 pages, in the rest of the book we find edifying proverbs and the like from other ancient sources, from Plato to Eusebius, followed by a collection of similes taken fro … [Click Below for Full Description]

MERIAN, Matthaus
1655. Frankfurt: Mattheus Merian. unbound. View. Uncolored copper engraving. Image measures 11.5 x 14.5". This incredible circa 1655 view depicts a scene from the important naval battle during the first Anglo-Dutch War. The Battle of Ter Heijde or the Battle of Scheveningen was fought in July 31 1653 (10 August according to the Gregorian calendar) off the Dutch coast between the Commonwealth of England and the United Provinces. This final battle resulted in both sides claiming a victory and eventually led to the 1654 Treaty of Westminster. The scene depicts the Dutch fleet under Maarten Tromp engrossed in heavy battle with the English fleet under George Monck. Although Tromp was killed early in the battle, his death was kept secret to keep up the morale of the Dutch. A legend along the bottom lists the commanders and ships marked on the view. Issued in Merian's "Theatrum Europaeum". The print is in good condition with minor wear and verso repairs along the original folds and edges. Original plate mark is visible. Minor foxing. The Swiss-born Matthäus Merian (1593-1650) studied in Zurich and Paris before moving to Frankfurt, where he worked as an engraver, etcher and publisher. He lived in Basel, the city he was born in, for brief periods during his lifetime. This is a beautiful example of his work.

Nicolas SANSON d'Abeville (Abbeville 1600 - Parigi 1667)
Fine map of Asia. Nicolas Sanson was to bring about the rise of French cartography, although the fierce competition of the Dutch would last until the end of the century. His success was partly owing to the partnership with the publisher Pierre Mariette. In 1644 the latter had purchased the business of Melchior Tavernier, and helped Sanson with financial support in producing the maps. In 1657 Pierre Marriette died, however his son, also named Pierre, co-published the following years. Taken from "Cartes Générales de toutes les parties du Monde", published by Pierre Mariette. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Bartolomeo BISCAINO (Genova 1632 circa - 1657)
1655. Acquaforte, 1655 circa, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. [Click Below for Full Description]

VOYSIN, Daniel.
, . . Manuscript letter by the French minister of War Daniel Voysin de La Noiraye (1655-1717), addressed to "Monseigneur de V.A.S.". V.A.S. stands for "Votre Altesse Sérénissime" (Your Serene Highness ), which in this case is Louis-Auguste de Bourbon, duc du Maine (1670-1736), the favourite (legitimised) son of the French king Louis XIV and his official mistress, Madame de Montespan, whose name is noted twice in another, contemporary hand. Voysin requests to have a new artillery officer appointed, for the troops in Bouchain, France. This would concerns Louis-Auguste's own regiment, the "Regiment du Maine, taking part of the War of the Spanish Succession and sent in 1710 to Flanders.Old folds, and some foxing and minor tears along the extremities, otherwise good.

CASATI, Paolo.
Rome: Typis haeredum Corbeletti, 1655. Very rare first edition of this work on the theory of machines and the nature of gravity by the young Jesuit Paolo Casati. A thesis presented viva voce at the Collegio Romano, the work imaginatively envisions a Latin dialogue, in two parts, between three great physicists of the preceding generation, all recently dead in the 1640s: Galileo; Marin Mersenne, his greatest champion outside of Italy, and Paul Guldin, the leading Jesuit physicist at the Collegio Romano during the same period. The first part is devoted to the comparison between the forces produced by various machines, involving cog wheels, ropes and pulleys. The second is devoted to gravity and the problem of lifting the earth using the machines described in the first part. That a work sympathetic to Galileo, the arch rival of the Jesuits, should be printed in Rome, the intellectual capital of the Order, suggests that the power of Galileo's condemnation was already waning, and that in areas other than astronomy, public adherence to Galileian views was becoming increasingly acceptable. This work appeared in the same year as the first collected edition of Galileo's Opera (Bologna, Dozza, 1656-55). The contemporary impact of the work is not known, but according to Thorndike (VIII.179), Casati was read by Robert Boyle. A second edition, adding three further dialogues, was published in 1658. Casati (1617-1707) is an interesting and understudied figure in Jesuit intellectual life in the generation after Galileo. He is best known as the principal "handler" of Queen Cristina's high … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: E. Tyler for John Crook, 1655. Quarto, with two portrait frontispieces, engraved costume plate and folding map, and an engraved map in the text; small paper flaw affecting one leaf yet an excellent copy with the single contents leaf (not noted in the collation by Lust) and advertisement leaf bound in; contemporary speckled calf, spine ornamented in gilt. First English edition of Semedo's very important study of China (first published as Relatione della grande monarchia della Cina in 1643) with the section describing the Manchu conquest of China based on Martini's De bello Tartarico historia of 1654.'Alvarez Semedo (1586-1658) was the Portuguese Procurador General for China. He first arrived in China in 1613. Unlike other Jesuits, he remained in the south of China except for a visit to Xi'an in 1625, where he was the first European to examine the newly discovered Nestorian Tablet which had remained buried for centuries. In 1640 he wrote a detailed report in Italian to publicize the Jesuit mission in China. It is from this rare book that can be obtained very important information about Semedo's fascinating account on other important religions: the Muslim and Jewish communities in Ming dynasty in China. Semedo was the first European to describe in Europe the preparation and benefits of tea as a beverage. He wrote his original manuscript in Goa in 1638. It was first published in Spanish in 1642 by Manuel de Faria y Sousa. Martino Martini (1614-1661), an Italian Jesuit, also spent many years in China. FLEURY DE BELLINGEN
Lyon, Besson, (vers 1655).
