DV1702-47) SOLORZANO PEREIRA (Juan de).
Madrid, Morras, 1653. Petit in-folio. Titre gravé. 9ff. 1 planche. 11ff. 844pp. 44ff. [Click Below for Full Description]

BACON, Francis
1653. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly." ― Francis Bacon Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion. A rare collection of various Latin works and fragments of Francis Bacon, published here for the first time by Isaac Gruter. According to Willems, this work follows the example that is common by other Elzevier printings. However according to Goldsmid, "It appears that Louis Elzevier only printed the sheet bearing the signature x, and the six preliminary leaves. The printer of the remainder was probably J. de Jonge." The following works are included in this printing: · "De Fluxu et Refluxu Maris" ('Of the Ebb and Flow of the Sea') · "Thema Coeli" ('Theory of the Heavens) · "Descriptio Globi Intellectualis" ('A Description of the Intellectual Globe') · "Cogitata et Visa de Interpretatione Naturae" ('Thoughts and Conclusions on the Interpretation of Nature · "Filium Labyrinthi sive Formula Inquisitionis" · "Topica Inquisitionis de Luce et Lumine" ('Topical Inquisitions into Light and Luminosity'. After his studies, Binsfeld returned to his home region and became an important personality in the anti-Protestant Catholic activities Peter Binsfeld was a Medieval demonologist and Jesuit priest who lived in Trier, Germany, and died there of the plague in 1598. He was involved in the witch hunts of the time and wrote "The Confession of Warlocks and Witches", which discussed the confessions of alleged witches, and argued that torture did not affect the veracity of confessions. He thought that girls under age twelve and boys under age fourteen could not be considered guilty of practising witchcraft, but due to the precocity of some children the law should not be completely strict. This point of view can be considered as moderate, taking into account that some tribunals had condemned children between two and five years … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOSSE (Abraham)
(Brunet, I, 1127. Cicognara Library, 820). Quelques petites piqûres et rousseurs épa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Willems, 723. Haywood, Arabic Lexicography, p. 123. Golius, Jacob.
1653. Folio. (12), 16 pp., 17-2922 cols., (40) pp. With title-page printed in red and black, with Elzevier's woodcut device. Later calf, with title-label to spine. First edition of Golius's ground-breaking Arabic lexicon, which remained the most important dictionary in European Arabic studies until Freytag's dictionary appeared in the 1830s. Golius based his dictionary on a variety of Arabic lexicographical texts, the most important being al-Jawhari's Sahah and Firuzabadi's Qamus, but he also used geographical and zoological sources such as al-Damiri's book on animals. His dictionary included, moreover, Arabic words derived from other languages, most notably Turkish and Persian, which he translated directly from the source language, using Turkish and Persian glossaries. The work concludes with an extensive index, containing some 10,000 entries. "The manner in which Golius arranged his dictionary, according to the Arabic root letter and the verbal and substantival forms with all their derivates, is still the fundamental criterion of Arabic dictionaries in European languages" (Vrolijk & Van Leeuwen). The book was produced in four simultaneous issues, differing only in the imprint, all noting Bonaventura and Abraham Elzevier as printers (the colophon also noting the Elzeviers as printers), one apparently for their own distribution and others noting the book's sale by Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam or Arnout Leers in Rotterdam rather than the present Johannes van Ravesteyn. - Jacobus Golius (1596-1667), a pupil and friend of Erpenius, was one of the most important Arabists of … [Click Below for Full Description]

DV1702-47) SOLORZANO PEREIRA (Juan de).
Madrid, Morras, 1653. Petit in-folio. Titre gravé. 9ff. 1 planche. 11ff. 844pp. 44ff. [Click Below for Full Description]

CAVALIERI, Bonaventura.
Bologna: Heirs of Evangelista Dozza, 1653. First edition. Second edition (first, 1635) of Cavalieri's text containing the discovery of the 'method of indivisibles', one of the most important forerunners of the integral calculus. Book II of the work includes the statement of 'Cavalieri's principle' for the determination of areas and volumes, which considers an area as made up of an indefinite number of equidistant parallel line segments ('omnes lineae'), and a solid as made up of an indefinite number of parallel plane areas. It states that, if two planar figures are contained between a pair of parallel lines, and if the lengths of the two segments cut by them from any line parallel to the including lines are always in a given ratio, then the areas of the two planar pieces are also in this ratio (there is an analogous principle for the determination of volumes). Cavalieri's principle provided a simple and effective alternative to the Archimedean method of exhaustion, and was used by Kepler, Galileo, Cavalieri's pupil Torricelli, Wallis, Pascal, and others. The first edition of the Geometria is a notorious rarity, ABPC/RBH listing only the Macclesfield copy in the last 80 years. This second edition is not as rare, but is still very difficult to find in such fine condition as in our copy. "For Cavalieri a surface consists of an indefinite number of equidistant parallel straight lines and a solid of a set of equidistant parallel planes. These constitute the line and surface indivisibles respectively. For plane figures (or solids) a regula, that is, a line (or plane) drawn throug … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zweite vermehrte Ausgabe (erstmals 1619 erschienen). - VD17, 23:277211Q. - "Seine [d. i. Hrsg. von Andrea Albert u. a. Berlin 2014. S. 147 f).
Palau, 104340. [Attributes: First Edition]

?dition originale.
