[Walton, Izaak]
London: Printed by T. Maxey for Rich. Marriot, 1653. First edition. Engraved cartouche of fish on title, ten engraved vignettes of fish in text. Title within engraved piscatorial cartouche, 6 engravings of fish within text variously attributed to Lombart, Faithorne or Vaughan, 2 pages of music for "The Angler's Song" by Henry Lawes with one page printed upside down as intended to enable two singers to sing facing each other, type-ornament headpieces, woodcut initial. 1 vols. Small 8vo (5-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches). The First Walton. First edition of a landmark of English literature. The present copy has A3r in uncorrected state and displays most other errors as noted by Horne (although p. 114 reading VVhen not VVien); p. 245 (with a notorious error) is here in facsimile in the corrected state. The first edition of Walton's perennially popular and never out-of-print angling classic has always been difficult to find. Its tremendous appreciation in value over the last twenty years is an indication of how few copies indeed remain, outside of permanent collections, as well as how relentlessly it is still pursued by collectors. HARVEY, William.
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of the Exercitatio Anatomica De Motu Cordis (1628). "The most important book in the history of medicine. Harvey proved experimentally that in animals the blood is impelled in a circle by the beat of the heart, passing from arteries to veins through pores (i.e. the capillaries, seen by Malpighi with the microscope in 1660)" (G&M). It should also be regarded as "the first record of a complete biological investigation, giving a clear and accurate description of the methods employed to recognise the laws governing an important vital process, a knowledge of which had till then been befogged by mistaken conceptions..." (H.P. Bayon in Keynes). This is an unusually tall copy (158 mm.). In most copies the headlines, and sometimes even the top lines of the text, are shaved. In this copy none of the headlines is shaved, and on some leaves the lower edge is uncut. This copy has 11 of the 13 misprints listed by Keynes that were corrected as the book passed through the press. In addition, F3 is mis-signed F5. It is complete with the first blank leaf. Wing H1083. See G&M 759, Printing and the Mind of Man 127, etc. (the first edition of 1628). Keynes, Bibliography, 19.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Rennes: P. Hallaudays and 1665. 2 works by Jean Francois bound in one volume, LA SCIENCE DES EAUX, a first edition of 1653, and L'ART DES FONTAINES, a second edition of 1665. French text, small 4to, approximately 205 x 155 mm, 8 x 6¼ inches. LA SCIENCE DES EAUX: This work is in 6 parts of which we are lacking the sixth: Des Principes de L'Arithmetique (68 pages), which was on computation and may have been discarded before binding as irrelevant to hydraulic engineering. GOMEZ (Ambrosio)
Madrid, J.M. de Barrio, 1653. in-Folio. Titre gravé. 1f. Portrait gravé. 18ff. 364pp. 12ff. Palau, 104340. [Attributes: First Edition]

DV1702-47) SOLORZANO PEREIRA (Juan de).
Madrid, Morras, 1653. Petit in-folio. Titre gravé. 9ff. 1 planche. 11ff. 844pp. 44ff. He was involved in the witch hunts of the time and wrote "The Confession of Warlocks and Witches", which discussed the confessions of alleged witches, and argued that torture did not affect the veracity of confessions. BOSSE (Abraham)
(Brunet, I, 1127. Cicognara Library, 820). Quelques petites piqûres et rousseurs épa … [Click Below for Full Description]
