BACON, Francis
L. Elzevirium. 1653 1ed Francis Bacon Scripta Astronomy SCIENCE Philosophy Labyrinth Elzevier Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly. Francis Bacon Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion. A rare collection of various Latin works and fragments of Francis Bacon published here for the first time by Isaac Gruter. According to Willems, this work follows the example that is common by other Elzevier printings. However according to Goldsmid, It appears that Louis Elzevier only printed the sheet bearing the signature x, and the six preliminary leaves. The printer of the remainder was probably J. de Jonge. The following works are included in this printing: De Fluxu et Refluxu Maris ('Of the Ebb and Flow of the Sea') Thema Coeli ('Theory of the Heavens) Descriptio Globi Intellectualis ('A Description of the Intellectual Globe') Cogitata et Visa de Interpretatione Naturae ('Thoughts and Conclusions on the Interpretation of Nature Filium Labyrinthi sive Formula Inquisitionis Topica Inquisitionis de Luce et Lumine ('Topical Inquisitions into Light and Luminosity' Item number: #6827 Price: $750 BACON, Francis Francisci Baconi de Verulamio Scripta in natvrali et vniversali philosophia. Matthaeus, Anton.
Utrecht, Johannes van Waesberge, 1653. 4to. (8), 465, (32) pp. With woodcut printer's device on title-page. Bound in contemporary calf, spine gilt. Scarce first edition, and a handsome copy, of this comprehensive early modern discussion of auctions, including laws governing public contracts and the sale of confiscated property. Although further editions were published posthumously, the only copy of this first edition we have traced at auction was sold in the Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana, Part III (2005). To quote their description, this is the "[f]irst edition of one of the earliest and most extensive works on auction sales in the 17th century from a legal point of view; the rules governing them, their location, the sale of confiscated merchandise, etc. Anton Matthaeus was an eminent Dutch professor of jurisprudence and criminal law at Utrecht and according to Pollard and Ehrman 'produced the most elaborate of all these treatises' on auctions'." - Matthaeus commences by defining the requisites for auctions as being: advertisement, admission to the public, and a system of bidding. In the case of stolen or confiscated property, for example, Matthaeus deals with the prickly question of whether the owner or the creditors have the upper hand and first rights to the goods on sale. He also addresses the question of under what circumstances an auction can be cancelled. - Head of spine chipped; extremities a little rubbed; otherwise a clean, fresh, and fine copy. Dekkers, Bibliotheca Belgica Juridica 111. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

OUGHTRED, WILLIAM, [FRANCIS MALTHUS] & JEAN LEURECHON
William Leake [1653] Hard back later 19th century half roan. Yellow end papers. Lacks title page/frontis. 1st page "epistle to the reader" (page a) 2pp table. Contents pp.24. Text 1-[287] plus The description and use of the double horizontal dyall, pub William Leake 1652 15pp text. Ink signature to both end papers. Some pages cropped but all text present, some text soiling . Good . Oughtred (1574-1660) was a prominent mathematician who invented the slide rule and the "x" symbol. This work must rank as one of the earliest books on recreational mathematics , it is a translation of a 1630's French work by Jean Leurechon. It was thought Oughtred translated it but it was probably Francis Malthus. A wealth of mathematical posers and an interesting section on fireworks. Rare title I have only discovered two copies in auction records in the last 25 years (tprm)

Coke, Zachary [possible pseud. of Henry Ainsworth].
London: Pr. by Robert White for George Calvert, 1654 [i.e., 1653]. 8vo (17.6 cm, 6.9"). [24], 222 pp. First edition: a systematic, philosophical approach to the rigors of logical thought. The authorship of this work is debated, with some sources accepting the title-page attribution to Zachary Coke and others suggesting Brownist clergyman Henry Ainsworth (1571–1622), while still others describe the text as heavily indebted to an unauthorized, abridged translation of Bartholomäus Keckermann's Systema Logicae; Harvard notes that "the 'Advertisement to the reader' in the second edition (1657) states that Coke obtained a manuscript of Henry Ainsworth & 'printed it as his own.'" Regardless of whether this work was actually done by Coke's hand or another's, Marco Sgarbi notes that "there is no doubt that Coke's logic was the most complete logical handbook in English written before Locke's Essay" (The Aristotelian Tradition & the Rise of British Empiricism, p. 198).    The present example appears to be the variant printing of the first edition as described by the University of Illinois, with line 32 of p. 179 giving "F acies" (instead of "Fallacies"); ESTC and Thomason suggest that the actual printing date was 1653. => Printed legend "Cokes Art of Logick in English." vertically on a blank between the front free endpaper and the title-page; the relic of a ream wrapper.    Binding: Notably elegant period-style quarter speckled calf and marbled paper–covered sides, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label, raised bands, and blind-tooled decorations filling compartments.    Pro … [Click Below for Full Description]

Londoni: Excudebat Rogerus Daniel: prostat autem venale apud Joannem Martin & Jacobum Allestrye, sub signo Campanae in Cometerio D. Pauli, 1653. The first edition of the Septuagint printed in England. [8], 1279, [1]; 186, [2] pp. plus terminal blank. 1 vols. 4to (signed in 8's) 195 x 143mm. The Uncommon Quarto Printing. The first edition of the Septuagint printed in England (with the Scholia), the scarce printing in quarto format. The text is derived from the Sixtine text, and edited by John Biddle (1615-1662), the Unitarian controversialist who was imprisoned by the Parliamentary Commissioners for his religious views. The SCHOLIA ... has a separate title-leaf, register and pagination. The same setting was imposed in both quarto and octavo formats, the latter with rules separating the columns of text. In regard to institutional representation, the edition in quarto is much more uncommon than that in octavo: ESTC locates 4 copies of the quarto printing in North America, as opposed to 19 of the octavo printing. Occasionally, Daniel's reprint of the New Testament is bound up with the octavo printings to form a complete Bible. Brunet cites that format, but notes the sale of a copy on "Gr. Pap.," presumably a copy in this format. Over the last 35 years, ABPC records sale of one copy in quarto (1999) and four in octavo. Small octavo. 31 text leaves. Contemporary vellum. Latin with a list of ten English and Latin works in a different hand to endpaper. Most likely written as a school exercise, the combination of a condensed version of a Jesuit text with the list of predominantly English titles to the front endpaper suggests it was an English schoolboy receiving his education at a Jesuit school on the Continent.
