Luca GIORDANO (Napoli 1634 - 1705)
Acquaforte, 1653 circa, firmata in basso a destra "L. Etching, 1653 circa, signed at lower right "L. Jordanus". First state of two, before the address of Francesco Palmieri. Very good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, with "fleur-de lys" watermark, irregularly trimmed at margins, affecting the image on the upper-, lower- and left side, central paper fold, thinned in some areas, otherwise in good condition. This etching copy, in reverse, the omonimous painting by Luca Giordano - Pommersfelden, Schönborn Galerie. The scene is based on the Aelias' sacrifice (Libro dei Re, 18, 19-40). Stefano della BELLA (Firenze 1610 - 1664)
1653. Acquaforte, monogrammata in lastra in basso. … [Click Below for Full Description]

The rare Barrefeldt illustrated Bible of the religious group: Second House of Love. Originally published by Christopher Plantin in 1581. The spiritual ideas of Heil were expressed in the fine series of engravings designed by Pieter van der Borcht. A smaller version of the Bible was first printed by Colin in Dutch in 1613. Colin published several verions of this work,in varying formats and plates. LEYBOURN, William
1653. Engraved frontis. port. of Leybourn and numerous woodcut diagrams & tables in the text. Title printed in red & black. 6 p.l., 84, 177-279 pp. Small folio, cont. sheep (some wear & rubbing, a few unimportant stains). London: R. & W. Leybourn for E. Brewster & G. Sawbridge, 1653. First edition under this title. "Of all the seventeenth-century writers on surveying, William Leybourn probably exerted a greater influence on the practicing surveyor than any other, with the possible exception of John Love. Leybourn's first contribution to surveying was a short pamphlet, Pantometria or the Whole Art of Surveying, published in London in 1650 and written under the pseudonym of Oliver Wallinsby. This little tract proved so popular that Leybourn was prompted to enlarge it, and in London in 1653 he published [the present work] which passed through four editions in the seventeenth century and a revised edition in the first half of the eighteenth century. "Leybourn's texts are written in a clear, attractive style which probably developed out of his extensive teaching experience. They are a decided improvement over most of the texts published previously: the material is better organized, and there is a definite trend toward a generalization of the different methods of surveying."-L.W. Richeson, English Land Measuring to 1800. Instruments and Practice, pp. 113-14. The binding is rubbed, but a very nice and crisp copy. Cortachy Castle Library bookplate. Preserved in a cloth box. ? A Paris: 1653. [Click Below for Full Description]

RARE SECOND ENLARGED EDITION, of Cavalieri's principal work on the differential calculus. Cavalieri started to write it as early as 1626 which is known from a letter by him to Galilei. The book was first printed in 1635, but the present edition is much corrected and enlarged by pieces omitted in the 1635 edition. The expression "indivisibilia" is very old; it was used by Brad Wardine, but only through Cavalieri it gained significance. John Brinsley
Thomas Maxey. The Mystical Brazen Serpent with the Magnetical Virtue 1653 VERY RARE ANTIQUE. This book was found with many other in an old NJ barn. For its age, the book is in a really beautiful shape. There is no evidence of foxing nor bookworms. The book is very unique for the reason being that is has an inscription on the front from Reverend John Nelson, which is actually Reverend John Nelson Darby that usually left the Darby off the end of his name because he was proud that he was named after his Godfather, Lord Nelson. Reverend Nelson was the founder of the Exclusive Brethren, and is considered to be the father of modern Dispensationalism and Futurism. When he did a 11 hour lecture tour in Geneva in 1840 he signed copies of various influential books to a few people, which this one went to Amos Wheeler of New Hampshire that went to see the Reverend. In common practice, signed the book on the last page to show he had finished reading the entire book. This a is a beautiful book and rare signed that would be a proud addition to any collectors library.
