Buch 1.
[Click Below for Full Description]

PARIVAL (Jean-Nicolas de)
Leyde, Chez Abraham a Geerevliet, 1653.. Bon exemplaire..

It was reprinted in numerous editions; after 1583, these were appended with a treatise on the Muses by Geoffroi Linocier. All clearly demonstrated...", two folding engraved plates and three full-page woodcut illustrations. Third Edition. "Blith wrote two books on husbandry which surpass all others of their time for their practical good sense, their evidence of his own and others' farming experience, the candour of the author's judgments and opinions, and the care given to describing new farming practices and making textual changes as time and improved knowledge permitted. His The English Improver, or, A New Survey of Husbandry (1649), offering six pieces of improvement, was dedicated to both houses of parliament and the 'ingenuous reader'. In the same year another edition appeared. A so-called third impression was 'much augmented' (1652) and was, in fact, a thoroughly revised work. It was entitled The English Improver Improved, or, The Survey of Husbandry Surveyed, and its second part contained Six Newer Pieces of Improvement" - Oxford DNB. Fussell stated that "for really practical advice, [Blith's] English Improver is probably the best of the bunch." and Ernle mentions that Blith is thorough on the issue of field drainage. (Fussell, Old English Farming Books). One signature toward middle of the text block separating. Later he arranged the data and eventually collected over 1350 Observationes with appropriate Scholia. The Observationes were personal perceptions of patients and diseases, and formed the basis for the subsequent Scholia, initially dedicated as a separate monograph to personal acquaintances such as Prince Maurice of Orange, and city governments, like those of Alkmaar, Delft, Leiden, Amsterdam and Enkhuizen. In 1609 all his monographs and the treatise on urinalysis were bundled and published in Frankfurt as the Opera Omnia. Numerous reprints followed, of which this work is one. Contemporary calf, richly gilt decorated spines in 6 compartments. The second and last French edition of Dalechamp's famous herbal. The first Latin edition was published 1586-87 followed in 1615 by the first French edition. The present edition is the most complete one in the French language. "Dalechamp is considered by some authorities to have been one of the most erudite of the French botanists of the 16th century. His book is a compilation of the botanical knowledge available at that date, and is important as it shows another grouping attemp at a classification of the plants which he described. A number of woodcuts were especially made for the book from plants sent to the author by Lobel, l'Ecluse, and others, but for the most part were taken from previously published works" (Hunt 154). Dalechamp was a student of Rondelet and among his regular correspondents were Conrad Gesner, Joseph Justus Scaliger, Robert Constantin and Jean Fernel. First two leaves of each volumes have the outer margins somewhat browned, else a fine copy. Nissen BBI, 447.
