See Firth, "The Development of the Study of Seventeenth-Century History" in Transactions of the Royal Historical Society 7 (1913), 27. Lowndes notes that this work was "not very favorable to the character of the monarch," and DNB calls Wilson's work "strongly prejudiced against the rule of the Stuarts (DNB XXI, 553). ARVIEUX, Laurent d'.
This edition not in Atabey; Blackmer; KVK; NCC; Saalmink; Tiele; WorldCat. A surprisingly rare re-issue of the first Dutch edition of D'Arvieux's Voyage, translated by Gerard Kuipers. Dressed in local costume, D'Arvieux travelled widely in the Levant and was well-versed in Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Hebrew and Syriac languages. He resided in Sidon (or Saïda) from 1653 to 1664, when he was sent on a mission to the Arabs of Mount Carmel, which is narrated in the present work. The account includes a general description of the traditions and customs of nomadic tribes and is illustrated with 3 fine plates. The first edition was edited and posthumously published by Jean La Roque in 1717. The present Dutch edition is a re-issue with a new title-page of the 1780 edition, printed from the same setting of type, and apparently unrecorded.Binding with some light wear, otherwise in very good condition.

BOSSE, A
1653. BOSSE, A[braham]. Moyen Universel de Pratiquer la Perspective sur les Tableaux. [2], 80 pp. Illustrated with additional engraved title, an engraved title-page for the explanation of the plates (verso is plate one), plus 32 engraved plates, two of which are folding. 8vo., 210 x 130 mm, bound in contemporary speckled French calf, red morocco spine label stamped in gilt. Paris: chez l'auteur, 1653. BOUND WITH: Le peintre converty aux precises et universelles regles de son art. [8], 72 pp. Illustrated with an engraved dedication. Paris: chez l'auteur, 1667. First Edition of each work. A single bound volume of works on perspective and painting by the prolific author on the subjects, Abraham Bosse (1602-1676). Moyen Universel furthered Bosse's controversial promotion of the artistic theories of the French geometer Girard Desargues (1591-1661), who emphasized the importance of an artist's technical understanding of perspective. In it, Bosse discusses and illustrates the application of perspective to the complicated anamorphic designs on vaults and ceilings. Bosse's views lead to his famous dispute with Charles Le Brun, who preferred to deemphasize the technical aspects of art, believing more in an inherent genius that made an artist great. The dispute would end in Bosse's expulsion from the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, an institution he helped found. The second work, Le peintre converty, appropriately bound with Moyen Universel, presents a discussion between representatives of different arts on the importance of perspective in each of their disciplines. HARVEY, William.
London: Printed by Francis Leach, for Richard Lowndes, 1653. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of the Exercitatio Anatomica De Motu Cordis (1628). "The most important book in the history of medicine. Harvey proved experimentally that in animals the blood is impelled in a circle by the beat of the heart, passing from arteries to veins through pores (i.e. the capillaries, seen by Malpighi with the microscope in 1660)" (G&M). It should also be regarded as "the first record of a complete biological investigation, giving a clear and accurate description of the methods employed to recognise the laws governing an important vital process, a knowledge of which had till then been befogged by mistaken conceptions..." (H.P. Bayon in Keynes). This is an unusually tall copy (158 mm.). In most copies the headlines, and sometimes even the top lines of the text, are shaved. In this copy none of the headlines is shaved, and on some leaves the lower edge is uncut.
