PERRAULT, Francois
Chez Pierre Aubert, Geneva, 1653. RARE AND INTERESTING WORK ON DEMONOLOGY FIRST EDITION. 8vo. pp. [xxxii], 233, [xxiii], 78. [par.]-2[par.]?, A-Q?, Aa-Dd?, Ee? (lacking Ee8 blank). Roman letter, some Italic. Floriated woodcut initials, woodcut head and tail-pieces, bookplate of Dr. Maurice Villaret on pastedown. Light age yellowing, very light spotting on title and a few margins. A very good, clean copy in late nineteenth century three-quarter brown morocco over marbled paper boards, signed David, spine with raised bands, gilt title, all edges gilt. First edition of this rare and most interesting work on demonology in general with a highly unusual second part recounting the author’s personal experience of a haunting, or poltergeist, in which he and his household were subject to a series of unremitting attacks from an evil spirit; the work was written by Perrault (or Perreaud) in 1613 but not published until 1653, when he was already 81 years old. It was translated into English and German and reprinted several times. "The Demonologie was not written as a free standing treatise. Its significance therefore derives from its being a preface to L’Antidemon de Macon, a highly personal account of an extended haunting which Perreaud explains by referring to maleficent magic. After describing the poltergeist activity at length, he then informs the reader that some people thought the trouble lay with his wife’s maid who was already suspected of being a witch and came from a suspect family. . His favoured explanation, however, involves a third person altogether. The previous owner (of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Plat, Hugh.
London: Printed by Bernard Alsop 4to (19.5 cm; 7.75"). [4] ff., 232 pp., illus.. 1653 Formulas, recipes, precious stones, agriculture, and industrial arts are a few of the topics addressed in The Jewell House. First published in 1594, this appears here in its second edition, which curiously has two variants of the title-page, with some spelling differences and each listing a different printer: One listing Elizabeth Alsop, the other Bernard Alsop! Same collation for both "editions." The title-page tells us the work is "Faithfully and familiarly set down, according to the authours own experience. By Sir Hugh Plat of Lincolns Inne, Knight. Wherunto is added, a rare and excellent discourse of minerals, stones, gums, and rosins; with the vertues and use thereof. By D.B. Gent." The DNB online summarized the contents of the work: "The first part lists 103 experiments, ranging from the practical to the fantastic. These include recipes for preserving fruit, flowers, meat, and water, and for a tooth-cleaner; a cheap way to erect a small bridge without the need to place supports in the water; a chafing dish to keep food warm without coals; how to keep garments free from moths; how to dispose of wasps and rats; a cement for mending glasses; and how to know what cards your opponent is holding. The second part deals with soils and manures, the third with distillations, the fourth with moulding and casting metals, and the fifth, entitled ‘An offer of certain new inventions which the author proposes to disclose upon reasonable considerations’, covers a diversity of topics such as the brewi … [Click Below for Full Description]

CAVAZZI DELLA SOMAGLIA, CARLO GIROLAMO. - [ONE OF THE EARLIEST PROPOSALS OF GOVERNMENT BONDS]
Milano, Nello Reg. Duc. Corte, perGio. Battista, e Giulio Cesare fratelli Maletesta Stampatori, 1653. Folio. In contemporary full vellum. Title written in contemporary hand to lower edge. A few early leaves reinforced and a 1x1 cm hole in leaf pppp2 with loss of text. Ex-libris stamp (Ghislanzoni) to lower part of title-page. Otherwise a very fine, clean and crisp copy. (56), 792, 76 pp. + the engraved frontispiece by Frederico Agnelli. First edition thus, being the hugely expanded second version of Cavazzi's famous fiscal analysis of the Duchy of Milan and of Lombardy in general (which had been under Spanish rule since 1559, and was to remain so until 1701), constituting one of the earliest proposals of government bonds in (what is now) Italy. Furthermore, the present work was Manzoni's main source of knowledge about the plague when writing 'Promessi Sposi' (The Betrothed).A much shorter preliminary work comprising merely 146 pp. appeared in 1647, under the same title. The present work is hugely expanded and is essentially a different work.Cavazzi here gives a thorough analysis of taxation and the general cost of public administration, which had become an exceedingly important issue for the city of Milan. Over a 25 year period, the debt of Milan had risen to uncontrollable heights and this is the first serious attempt to improve the city's economic status. Cavazzi occupies himself with duties on, among other things, salt, wine, oil, meat, flour, and horses and argues that the tax burden might be reduced through both efficiencies in spending and through raising of funds thr … [Click Below for Full Description]

PINTO, Fernão Mendes
London: J. Macock, 1653. Some moderate marginal worming at the rear (also affecting the boards a little), gentle preliminary browning; overall an attractive copy.. Small folio, title-page in black and red; contemporary calf, spine sympathetically renewed in period style with raised bands, gilt panels and red morocco label. First English edition: one of the great travel narratives of all time, recounting the experiences of a Portuguese adventurer in the Far East over a period of 21 years. Although Pinto's claims to have been the first European to set foot on Japanese soil are erroneous (he was preceded in 1542 by the Portuguese adventurer Diego Zeimoto), he was nonetheless one of the first European visitors to Japan and is known to have visited the islands four times, was a prominent figure in the Jesuit mission to Kyushu during the 1540s, and was a personal friend and patron of St. Francis Xavier, indeed is credited with having financed Xavier's first Jesuit mission to Japan. Born in humble circumstances, Pinto departed Portugal in 1537 in a fleet commanded by the son of Vasco da Gama, and did not return to his homeland until 1558. During this time he traversed vast distances, providing rich first-hand accounts of India, Abyssinia, Malacca, Sumatra, Java, China, Tartary and Burma. By his own accounts he was shipwrecked, enslaved and sold on numerous occasions but invariably survived and even prospered as a merchant soldier in the Far East. Pinto first visited Japan in 1545, landing on an island to the south of Kyushu. Pinto returned to Portugal in 1558 and wrote his Peregri … [Click Below for Full Description]

Liceto [Liceti] Fortunio
Typis Sebastiani Sardi, 1653.
The second part deals with soils and manures, the third with distillations, the fourth with moulding and casting metals, and the fifth, entitled ‘An offer of certain new inventions which the author proposes to disclose upon reasonable considerationsÂ’, covers a diversity of topics such as the bre … [Click Below for Full Description]

MARCELLO, Frater.
Original diary kept by Frater Marcello, one of the Apostolic Commissars sent by Pope Alexander VII to the Malabar coast of southwest India, not principally to convert the infidels, but to promote the union of the ancient Saint Thomas Christians with the Church of Rome. The goal of the mission was a reconciliation of the Saint Thomas Christians of the classical Syriac (Chaldaic) rite, who had rejected their Jesuit archbishop Francis Garcia. The majority had revolted against the archbishop in 1653 and forsaken his authority by taking an oath for the purpose at the foot of a cross situated in Mattancherry, thereafter called the "Coonen Cross". They then appointed their archdeacon archbishop, violating Church polity and effectively seceding from the Roman Church. The diary is very important for the history of the Saint Thomas Christians on the Malabar coast and the conquest of that coast, especially Cochin, by the Dutch fleet under Rijcklof van Goens as it contains many, undoubtedly new details. The manuscript has been trimmed close to the text but with no significant loss. It shows occasional ink stains and sometimes slight browning but remains in good condition. An important primary source for relations between Christian, Muslim and Hindu groups on the Malabar coast in the late 1650s and the 1660s..

Pinto, Ferdinando Mendes
London, 1653. Large quarto. Contemporary speckled calf, neatly rebacked in matching style, gilt leather label. Outer corners worn. Ink notation to titlepage. Text moderately tanned, seventh leaf reinforced and repaired with tissue. Very good. The extremely rare first English edition of a classic travel narrative, first published in Lisbon in 1614. Mendes Pinto left Portugal in 1537 and did not return until 1558. During that time, Pinto visited Japan four times, claiming to have been the first European to set foot on Japanese soil, in 1543. He gives firsthand accounts of India, Abyssinia, Malacca, Sumatra, Java, China, Tartary and Burma. "Not only an account of his travels but a work of art, which is at once a picture of Asia, a relation of what he did and saw, a summing up of the Portuguese Empire, a vast gallery of portraits, and an encyclopedia of adventure both in the sphere of action and of the spirit" - Maurice Collis.

[MAP - NETHERLANDS - GELDERSE VALLEI]. BROECKHUIJSEN, Justus van.
Deys, Gelderse Vallei 435 & pp. 81-83; Donkersloot-De Vrij 408. Large wall map showing the Slaperdijk (literally: "sleeper dike") in the Dutch region the Gelderse Vallei, running from the Utrechtse Heuvelrug ("Utrecht Hill Ridge") in the south to Fort Daatselaar in the north. The dike was built in 1653 as a backup in case the northern Rhine Dike or Grebbe Dike between Wageningen and Rhenen should break (as depicted in the inset map), which had caused major flooding in the past. When in 1704 the Slaperdijk Managing Board wanted to prevent the illegal cutting of trees they asked the surveyor Justus van Broeckhuijsen (ca. 1670-1724) to make a map they could use as an instrument to enforce the law. The result was an appealing wall map, not only functional in character, but also serving a representative purpose. The present copy appears to be in the first state with the names of the original board members. The two sheets in the upper corners are trimmed off about a centimetre shorter as the two in the middle, likely as issued. There is some minor damage in the upper outer corners from previous mounting and some minor browning, otherwise a very good copy.
