MARCELLO, Frater.
1653. Original diary kept by Frater Marcello, one of the Apostolic Commissars sent by Pope Alexander VII to the Malabar coast of southwest India, not principally to convert the infidels, but to promote the union of the ancient Saint Thomas Christians with the Church of Rome. The goal of the mission was a reconciliation of the Saint Thomas Christians of the classical Syriac (Chaldaic) rite, who had rejected their Jesuit archbishop Francis Garcia. The majority had revolted against the archbishop in 1653 and forsaken his authority by taking an oath for the purpose at the foot of a cross situated in Mattancherry, thereafter called the "Coonen Cross". They then appointed their archdeacon archbishop, violating Church polity and effectively seceding from the Roman Church. The diary is very important for the history of the Saint Thomas Christians on the Malabar coast and the conquest of that coast, especially Cochin, by the Dutch fleet under Rijcklof van Goens as it contains many, undoubtedly new details. The manuscript has been trimmed close to the text but with no significant loss. It shows occasional ink stains and sometimes slight browning but remains in good condition. An important primary source for relations between Christian, Muslim and Hindu groups on the Malabar coast in the late 1650s and the 1660s.

Small octavo. 31 text leaves. Contemporary vellum. Latin with a list of ten English and Latin works in a different hand to endpaper. Most likely written as a school exercise, the combination of a condensed version of a Jesuit text with the list of predominantly English titles to the front endpaper suggests it was an English schoolboy receiving his education at a Jesuit school on the Continent.

CAVALIERI, Bonaventura.
Bologna: Heirs of Evangelista Dozza, 1653. Second edition (first, 1635) of Cavalieri's text containing the discovery of the 'method of indivisibles', one of the most important forerunners of the integral calculus. Book II of the work includes the statement of 'Cavalieri's principle' for the determination of areas and volumes, which considers an area as made up of an indefinite number of equidistant parallel line segments ('<em>omnes lineae</em>'), and a solid as made up of an indefinite number of parallel plane areas. It states that, if two planar figures are contained between a pair of parallel lines, and if the lengths of the two segments cut by them from any line parallel to the including lines are always in a given ratio, then the areas of the two planar pieces are also in this ratio (there is an analogous principle for the determination of volumes). Cavalieri's principle provided a simple and effective alternative to the Archimedean method of exhaustion, and was used by Kepler, Galileo, Cavalieri's pupil Torricelli, Wallis, Pascal, and others. The first edition of the <em>Geometria</em> is a notorious rarity, ABPC/RBH listing only the Macclesfield copy in the last 80 years. This second edition is not as rare, but is still very difficult to find in such fine condition as in our copy.</p> <p>"For Cavalieri a surface consists of an indefinite number of equidistant parallel straight lines and a solid of a set of equidistant parallel planes. The first edition of the Geometria is a notorious rarity, ABPC/RBH listing only the Macclesfield copy in the last 80 years. This second edition is not as rare, but is still very difficult to find in such fine condition as in our copy. "For Cavalieri a surface consists of an indefinite number of equidistant parallel straight lines and a solid of a set of equidistant parallel planes. These constitute the line and surface indivisibles respectively. For plane figures (or solids) a regula, that is, a line (or plane) drawn through the vertex, i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mascardi Agostino
Francesco Baba, Venezia, 1653.

A map of Persia, indicating major settlements, regions, and mountain ranges, as well as the march of the Ten Thousand . The Ten Thousand were a group of mercenary units, mainly Greek, drawn up by Cyrus the Younger to attempt to wrest the throne of the Persian Empire from his brother, Artaxerxes II. Their march to the Battle of Cunaxa and back to Greece (401 BC-399 BC) was recorded by Xenophon (one of its leaders) in his work, The Anabasis. This map was compliled by the French cartographer Pierre du Val, and published in Jansson's Atlas of the Antique World , Accura … [Click Below for Full Description]
