Gerolamo SCARSELLO (Bologna 1624 - 1678 circa)
Opera molto rara. "Etching, circa 1650, without printing details. After Guido Reni. A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with ""circle with clover and letter"", trimmed to the borderline or with thin margins, very good condition. A very rare work, undescribed."

Gerolamo SCARSELLO (Bologna 1624 - 1678 circa)
1650. Acquaforte, metà XVI secolo, monogrammata in lastra in basso. "Etching, mid-sixteenth century, monogrammed in plate below. After Guido Reni. Example in the second state of two. Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""coat of arms with eagle"" dates back to the mid-seventeenth century, trimmed to the copperplate, small abrasions visible on the reverse, otherwise in excellent condition. Bolognese painter and engraver was a pupil of Francesco Gessi. His graphic work so far known amounts to 6 etchings depicting mythological works by Guido Reni and Giovanni Andrea Sirani. The date of birth of Scarsello is documented at January 19, 1624, while that of his death is not exactly known, but presumably occurred after 1678. Malvasia, in fact, describes the date 1678 worked i … [Click Below for Full Description]

ont Not Stated : Not Stated. 1650. Hardcover. Book, An early and uncommon Testina edition of the collected works of Niccolo Machiavelli, containing his most popular and influential works, including 'The Prince'. Illustrated with engravings. This is one of five 'Testina Editions' of Machiavelli's works, named because of the bust of Machiavelli engraved to the title page. The leading title page is dated 1650, however the four other title pages preceding each work is dated 1550. Both of these dates are incorrect, and the exact date of this editions publication is unknown. 'The British Library Short-title Catalogue of Italian Books Printed in Italy 1465-1600' suggests that this work was actually published 1610, 1620 or 1640. Machiavelli's works are very often misdated, as they were dated retroactively due to the papal ban on Machiavelli's works that begun in 1568. The Testina Editions are known to have false dates, and there are many variants which are difficult to identify, with numerous rearrangements of the text. It is suggested by Ebert that this edition was printed in Geneva. Collated, complete. The final blank is present, and the pagination matches the Jisc record held at the National Trust Libraries. Collated from Jisc and from online scans. Illustrations to pages 116 and 117 of 'Dell' Arte Della Guerra'. Register runs as )(4, A-Rr4, )(2, a-n4, o1, A4, e4, a-mm4, aaa-ttt4, aaaa-tttt4, uuuu3. Blank leaf bound between 'Il Principe' and 'Discorsi'. A collection of the works of Niccolo Machiavelli, divided into five parts. Jan Jansson , Amsterdam
1650. 56 x 44.5 cm. Fine example of Jansson's sea chart of the Pacific, the first chart of the Pacific to show California as an Island and the earliest sea chart of the Pacific to appear in a Dutch Atlas. A long chain of islands appear in the South Pacific, which are likely a vestige of Terra Australis by are noted by Jansson to have been discovered by Hernando Gallego in 1576. California is an island, based upon the Briggs model, but lacking the 2nd Punta de la Concepcion suggesting reliance upon Goos or his sources. The large Terra Incognita in the Northwest nearly connects Asia with the Island of California, separated only by the Fretum (Strait) Anian. Many place names in California.

Rara. Bartsch, XIX, 1; Bertelà 927.

Adriaen van OSTADE (Haarlem 1610 - Amsterdam 1684)
Acquaforte, 1648-1650 circa, firmata in basso a sinistra 'Av. ostade'. Etching, 1648 - 1650 circa, signed with the artist's name 'Av. ostade' at lower left. Third state, of four, with fine cross-hatchings on the sleeve at the level of the tankard. Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, with watermark, trimmed at margins, in excellent condition. Godefroy doubtfully dates the plate at 1667. The original painitng that inspired this print was formerly in the collection of William Baillie. Hollstein 10.III; Bartsch I.355.10; Godefroy, p. 62 n. 10

Bartolomeo BISCAINO (Genova 1632 circa - 1657)
Opera molto rara. Etching, 1650 circa, not dated. Example of second state, inscribed in lower center "Daman. ex." Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, with partial and unreadebale watermark, in very good condition. The existence of first state has been hypothesized because the name of the printer Daman appears in darker ink than in the rest of the etching. Very rare work. TIB: 47.029 S2

Opera estremamente rara. " Etching, the artist's signature is missing. Magnificent proof, with good contrast and rich tonalities, on contemporary laid paper, no watermark, trimmed at the platemark or with very narrow margins, in excellent conditions. Gerolamo Imperiale descended from a family belonging to the Genoese aristocracy which included collectors, dealers an patrons of the arts. His biography is quite sketchy; we only know that he lived for about thirty years during which his contribution to the graphic arts was limited to only four different works. According to Bartsch, these ""were made with exceptionally good taste and noteworthy technical expertise"". A very rare print." Bartsch vol. XX, pag. 71, 3.

Giovanni Benedetto CASTIGLIONE detto "Il Grechetto" (Genova 1616 - Mantova 1670)
Etching, 1650 circa, signed at upper left with monogram GB, followed by the surname CASTILONE.Only state. Excellent example, printed on contemporary laid paper, white margins of 0,8 mm circa, with partial and unreadable watermark, in very good condition. This etching is attribued to Catiglione for the presence of the artist's last name, composed in the same way as his monogram and signature in other works, and similar to the artist's signature included in his two portrait series. Furthermore, the placement of the signature is analogous. A possible contradiction to this attribution is presented by the strong similarities this etching displays to a series of four works not etched by Castiglione (TIB, 097-100). Willem Janszoon BLAEU (Uitgeest 1571- Amsterdam 1638)
Detailed map of the region bounded by Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh and extending inland up the Ganges and Indus Rivers to Tartary and the Himalayas, including Katmandu, Kabul and other legendary cities along the great trading routes. Extends south to include a large portion of India, including Narsinga, Orixa Decan, etc. Elephants shown roaming in the Ganges and Camels east of Kabul. Decorative cartouches and sailing ships. Blaeu's map of India was one of the earliest Dutch maps to follow the work of Baffin. William Baffin's map represented a significant leap forward in the mapping and geographical understanding of India, significantly improving on earlier printed maps of India by Mercator and Linschoten. The differences are especially noteworthy in the interior of Baffin's map. The Indus River is shown for the first time in a relatively accurate fashion. Western and most of central India are mapped in a relatively accurate format for the first time. One of the most prominent features which first appears on the Baffin-Roe map is the Longe Walke, the route lined with trees between the palaces at Agra and Lahore. Copperplate with fine original colouring, very good condition.
