Blaeu-- Joan
VESTING SCHENKENSCHANS "Schenken-Schans - Het Tolhuis - 't Huis te Hal - Griethuisen - Christina of Nieu Schenkschans" kopergravure vervaardigd voor Joan Blaeu's Stedenboek in of na 1649. In de tijd met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 43 x 52 cm.

Prijs: Euro 650,-.

17DE-EEUWSE STADSPLATTEGROND VAN LEIDEN"LUGDUNUM BATAVORUM vernacule Leyden". [Click Below for Full Description]

Rare first and only edition, in the original Italian, of the account of the Theatine monk and apostolic missionary Francesco Manco's voyage to India and his missionary work there, prepared for the press posthumously by Girolamo Fabri (1627 -1679) in Rome. Manco (d. 1646), born in Lecco, Italy, travelled in 1639/40 via Basra and Bandar Abbas to Goa in India with Pietro Avitable (ca. 1590 - 1650) and other Theatines. [PAMPHLET - WIC - BRAZIL].
Amsterdam, Claes Pietersz, 1649. 4to. Modern half faux snakeskin with paper sides, title in ink on spine and front cover. [36] pp. Rare first and only edition of a pamphlet in the form of a conversation between Amsterdam citizens in a café, who discuss current affairs. The title translates as "Amsterdam fireside-chat, about one thing and another thats now talked about".The main topics of discussion are the Dutch-Portuguese War, the West-Indian Company, Portuguese piracy and the disputed occupation of Angola, Sao Toméa and Brazil. The author is in favour of a peace-treaty with the Portuguese, and discusses at length the 19 articles delivered by the States General to the Ambassador of Portugal at The Hague. The discussion also turns to the case against Bulstraten and Hamel, magistrates of Brazil, that was in court at the moment. They were accused of stealing over 40 tons of gold from the West-India Company and of failing to respond properly to the rising "revolt" of the Portuguese in Brazil.Pages numbered in ink. Genomen in August 1649.Utrecht, Jan Havick, 1649. 4to. Modern brown half morocco. [20] pp. Second edition of a splendid satire of the burgomasters and council members of the city of Amsterdam, presented as an official resolution of the city government concerning the West India Company (WIC)'s troubles with the Portuguese in Brazil. The Portuguese had retaken Brazil and other possessions from the WIC and there was a great debate in the Netherlands as to whether the government should step in to support the WIC and if so how far they should go. Many investors would loose everything if the WIC permanently lost its trade in Brazil. The present fake resolution gives a statement from each of the burgomasters and councillors (under their real names). Many at the time apparently thought the resolution genuine and were furious at the authorities, who were not amused. They immediately published an Examen vande valsche resolutie ... (Examination of the false resolution ...) accusing the anonymous perpetrators of the hoax of deliberately trying to turn the populace against the council. This may have merely served to advertise the original pamphlet as a satire, for it was reprinted soon after the original appeared.Slightly browned, a few small marginal tears and corner of the fifth leaf torn. Binding rubbed along the extremities. Otherwise in good condition. Asher 252; Borba de Moraes, pp. 211-212; Sabin 16744; STCN (6 copies); WorldCat (6 other copies).

BLONDEL, David.
With a woodcut printer's device on title-page. Contemporary limp vellum. 109, [1 blank] Second edition of a work questioning the existence of the female pope Joan, who supposedly reigned from 855 to 857, written by the French Protestant historian David Blondel (1591-1655). According to the legend, originating from the 13th century, pope Leo IV was succeeded by a talented woman, disguised as a man, who reigned as a pope for two years before her true identity was discovered after she gave birth to a child. Blondel believed the legend to be false, stating that there is no contemporary evidence supporting a female pope and that the chronology of 9th century popes doesn't leave any room for a female pope reigning between Leo IV and his successor Benedict III.With an armorial bookplate on paste-down. Title-page and first few pages slightly soiled at the upper margin, a few minor stains, otherwise in very good condition. Gouda, Jasper Cornelisz, 1649. Small 4to (20 x 14 cm). Modern half vellum. [31], [1 blank] pp. First and only edition of a pamphlet on the strife in Brazil between the Dutch West India Company (WIC) and Portugal, in the form of a dialogue between four Dutchmen and a bartender in an Amsterdam tavern. It is one of a series of anonymous pamphlets published on the subject in that year, "much superior to anything which had as yet been written on the subject" (Asher, p. 197).The men discuss the latest news concerning Brazil, including the Zeeland privateers, the sugar trade, the establishment of the Portuguese Brazil Company (Companhia Geral para o Estado do Brazil), and the causes of the failure to make peace with the Portuguese. They also discuss the poor position of the WIC and suggest it would be better to revoke the Company's monopoly and allow merchants free trade with Brazil.Slightly browned, two small stains on last leaf, not affecting the text, otherwise in very good condition. [MELYN VAN DOORNINCK, Cornelis?].
With woodcut illustration on title-page, repeated as tailpiece. Modern half sheepskin parchment. 20 ll. First edition of a pamphlet criticizing the conduct of the Dutch West India Company (WIC) in Brazil, in the form of conversations between five men on Dam square in Amsterdam. It's a vehement attack on the WIC and the Dutch government concerning their strife with Portugal in Brazil. Since 1645 the Portuguese had violently resisted Dutch rule in Brazil, which depleted the treasury of the WIC. This, exacerbated by internal corruption, nearly bankrupted the WIC. The Dutch government's debate whether to financially support the WIC or not, led to many pamphlets by opponents and supporters of the government's plans. The conversation is held between two Dutchmen, a Portuguese, an Englishman and a director of the WIC. The pamphlet argues that Portugal must protect itself against Dutch privateers and that the Netherlands should not try to retake Brazil and Angola. It also urges peace, and claims the Portuguese are making efforts in the peace negotiations in contrast to the "monster" WIC.Slightly browned, with a few small spots, otherwise very good. Binding in very good condition as well. Asher 263 and pp. 197-198; Borba de Moraes, p. 33; Knuttel 6477; Sabin 1351.

n.p. (London): W. D. in R. M., 1649. Early Edition. 12mo. ((8),236,(12); then (2), Folding frontispiece present, as is the portrait opposite p., 203. Modern full black morocco, boards and spine tooled in blind, black lettering label,m gilt; boards with a raised lozenge bearing a crown and "C. R." , marbled endpapers. Originally attributed to Charles I, it is now acknowledged that the author is John Gauden. There were at least 40 different English editions printed in 1649, Madan observes that this is the only edition printed in England to contain the real name of the printer, William Du-gard, which appears in the imprint of the Apohthegmata. Madan's pagination indicates a final blank, not present here. The frontispiece has been strengthened at the horizontal fold, with a tiny loss, else this is a very good copy in a fine binding. Madan 22. Very good.

[MOERMAN, Johannes].
Sedighe onderwijsen der creaturen. In rhijm ghestelt. [engraved title-page:] Apologi creaturaru[m].Antwerp, Jacob Mesens, 1649. Oblong 8vo (11.5 x 16.5 cm). With 55 etched illustrations on integral leaves (including the title print of Hermes/Mercury releasing Persephone, with motto "utilia prudenti imprudenti futilia"). Contemporary vellum. 56 ll. Rare first and only Dutch edition (or adaptation), in verse, of an emblem book in Latin verse by Johannes Moerman (1556-1621). Each emblematic illustration faces an eight-line Dutch verse with a one-line Latin title, intended for moral education. The etchings include views of the earth and the heavens, landscapes, people engaged in various activities, including a ploughing scene that makes one think of Bruegel a quarter century later, some where buildings play a major role, but above all animals, including many fantastic beasts: siren, hydra, centaur, satyr, griffin, dragon, unicorn and others. But for the mid-17th-century reader, the rhinoceros may have seemed as fantastic as any of the others. Of the 55 engravings, 51 are printed from the original plates of the 1584 edition in its first issue, which are attributed to the Bruges artist and etcher Marcus Gheeraerts the elder. Although his name does not appear in either the Latin or the Dutch edition, the contemporary manuscript spine title of the present copy reads, "Emblem|Marcus|Gerarts". Jeudwine calls these "the most distinguished illustrations of the period in the Netherlands". The other four engravings are printed from the new plates attributed to Pieter van der Borcht the e … [Click Below for Full Description]

[MANUSCRIPT - NAVIGATION]. PLEMP, Joan J. (Jan Jansz.?).
Konst der zeevaert.[Rotterdam?, ca. 1649?]. Folio (32 x 21 cm). Manuscript in Dutch, written in a clear upright gothic cursive hand in brown ink on paper, with 41 illustrations (an equinoctial compass sundial, quadrants and numerous diagrams, more than half in colour and a few full-page or nearly full-page); 5 coloured cartouches with scales, brief tables, etc.; and more extensive tables of data. Two of the colour illustrations are dials with movable parts (now pasted down at their centres). Contemporary sheepskin parchment. [2], 178 pp. not including paste-downs. A detailed, extensive and well-illustrated manuscript handbook of the art of navigation, probably prepared for publication but certainly never published, written by "Joan J. Plemp" whom we tentatively identify as Jan Jansz. Plemp (d. 1650), a Rotterdam official who oversaw the surveying of the city. The 178-page text, mostly in the form of questions and answers (like a catechism), is divided into 6 chapters. They provide detailed information and tables of data for making calendrical calculations; the use of the compass, including names and positions of important stars and calculating corrections for magnetic declination; tables of ephemerides giving the daily positions of the sun; determination of latitude and longitude by day and by night; calculating distances; solar declinations following Tycho Brahe; and much more. The colour illustrations include a splendid equinoctial compass sundial for keeping time at sea almost a century before Harrison's chronometer; and rectangular quadrants.

BLITH, Walter.
London: printed for I. Wright, 1649. London: printed for I. Wright,, 1649. Creating farmland and improving yields Quarto (182 x 139 mm). Early 20th-century calf, spine lettered in gilt, covers panelled in gilt with gilt floral cornerpieces, gilt turn-ins and edges. Contemporary annotation to p. 37 and a couple of minor corrections to text. Spine lightly sunned, minor running mark to first few leaves, closely cropped in places without loss. A very good copy. One of two 1649 editions, of unestablished priority. Walter Blith (1605-1654) has been called by Robert Trow-Smith "the greatest of the mid-seventeenth century writers" in the field of agriculture (English Husbandry, 1951). In this work, Blith advocates draining and making water meadows, inclosure, the use of manures, and plantations. "In spite of the currently fashionable interlarding of Biblical references and quotations his directions are surprisingly clear: but like many another he was too far in advance of his time to be generally heeded, and it was more than a century later before any real progress was made with the improvements he advocates" (Fussell, p. 53). There were two editions in 1649 (most easily distinguished by their titles, the present "English Improover" and the separate "English Improver"). Wing placed this edition as the first, although "Improver" is also commonly cited as such. "Improver" is roughly double the pagination, and the Thomason Collection copy has a note of accession of December, both evidence that it is the second edition. Expanded third and fourth editions followed in 1652 and 1653. … [Click Below for Full Description]
