Pleasing contemporary blindstamped pigskin, covers framed with three floral rolls, arabesque in central panel, raised bands, ink titling at head of spine, early paper shelfmark at bottom, remnants of ties. Each title page with a (different) device, ornamental headpieces, historiated initials and tailpieces, a number of smaller woodcut images, charts, and diagrams, and 23 SOMETIMES STRIKING FULL-PAGE ENGRAVED SHEETS (with 24 images, one sheet containing two images), the cuts including, in the first part, an engraved title page (featuring a musician angel on a globe) and a full-page engraved portrait of Leopold William, Archduke of Austria, and, in the second part, an engraved frontispiece of Orpheus and Cerberus. Musical notation printed on many leaves. Front pastedown with engraved bookplate of Bernardine Murphy. Pigskin a bit soiled and peeling away slightly at top and bottom of spine, corners somewhat worn, but the period binding quite sound and still attractive. Occasional mild browning or foxing, perhaps three dozen leaves with faint marginal dampstaining, other minor imperfections, but still an excellent copy without serious defects, consistently clean and crisp internally. This is a major work in music and acoustics and a book with sometimes remarkably diverting plates, written by one of the most significant scientific writers of the period. The work is a storehouse of knowledge for the entire field of music, and, as such, it provides us with a valuable understanding of the area of study as a whole in the middle of the 17th century. As a work so encyclopedic in scope, it was long consulted as the definitive work of musicology. Kircher's wide-ranging treatment includes coverage of acoustics, vocal chords, birdsong, and the operation of many musical instruments, some of his own invention, and these instruments are illustrated by some of the most engaging and informative plates. Kircher demonstrates an excellent understanding of Baroque musical composition, and he illustrates his analysis with many musical examples, including a work of his own; among other musicians represented are Allegri, Gesualdo, Monteverdi, and Palestrina. Kircher speculates on the power of harmony to heal the world's ills, as well as the bite of the tarantula. He was assisted in producing this monumental work by the concert master of the Gesu, the Jesuit church of Rome, Antonio Maria Abbatini. Called by Ferguson "a man of vast--almost cumbrous--erudition," Athanasius Kircher (1602?-80) was a polymath, learned in the humanities, biblical studies, and, above all, the sciences, which had fascinated him since his youth. Born in Germany, he entered the Jesuit order as a teenager and taught mathematics at the Jesuit College in Rome, where he resided for 46 years. Undeterred by the relatively recent trial of Galileo (in which his Jesuit College had played a role), Kircher was a believer in the Copernican theory and an early observer through the telescope. He studied and wrote on many things (a partial list would include the heavens, hieroglyphs, physics and mechanics, magnetism, medicine, and volcanoes). Our copy comes from the collection of California philanthropist Bernadine Murphy Donohue (1904-68), who was awarded the title "Papal Countess" by Pope John XXIII for her charitable works.

      London: By R.I. to be sold by John Wright, 1650. Scarce first edition. With the rare portrait frontispiece and engraved titlepage. Small 8vo [132 by 80mm], full contemporary calf, sometime sympathetically and expertly rebacked to correctly marry the boards which are paneled in blind in ornate fashion with floral corner-pieces also in blind, edges with a double-ruled gilt fillet line, edges gilt tooled, the spine with double-ruled gilt raised bands and a red morocco label ruled and lettered in gilt. [x], 197 pp. A nice copy indeed, being well preserved and a complete copy of this scarce work, with light typical age mellowing. The binding is sturdy and still attractive. SCARCE FIRST EDITION WITH THE RARELY ENCOUNTERED PORTRAIT FRONTISPIECE. A SELDOM ENCOUNTERED CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNT OF KING JAMES I WRITTEN BY A MEMBER OF HIS COURT. ONLY A SMALL HANDFUL OF COPIES HAVE APPEARED IN RECENT YEARS. The work has long been attributed to Anthony Weldon, due somewhat to its not overly flattering portrayal of the monarch and due to its publication within a few months of Weldon’s death. The justification for the criticism inherent in the book is usually presumed to be because of Weldon’s dismissal from the royal court. At first a popular courtier, Weldon wrote an assessment of the Scottish people which was far from positive and the former James VI of Scotland did not take kindly to it. While these attributions and assumptions have held for centuries there are nowadays opinions emanating from more modern scholarship which challenges both the authorship of the book and the story of Weldon’s dismissal from court.

This curious and singular work is not a mere geographical work, but contains many things relating to Jewish antiquities, and to the manners and customs of the people? (Lowndes, 848). A Pisgah view of Palestine is a reference to Moses? view, from Mt. Pisgah of the Holy land where he was not permitted to enter. Fuller?s book provides a contemporary and comparable work to Milton?s works. Hopkins describes Fuller?s atlas as the first English bible Atlas (169 p.) Fuller used three engravers, John Goddard, Robert Vaughan and W. Marshall and maintained a uniform style. Rarissima prima edizione del 1650 di questo trattato sulla peste del medico bresciano Girolamo Occhi Rizetti. Rizetti operò durante la pestilenza che colpì Brescia nel 1630 e che mietè molte vittime. Rizetti descrive diversi tipi di febbre in particolare febbre dell'Austro (dal vento Ostro, si pensava che la peste venisse trasportata dal vento), la causa della peste del 1630, diversi tipi di veleno (arsenico, sandaraca, lepre marina, veleno della salamandra, veleno della vipera e dell'aspide, dipsadi, rana, del Cantharis, oppio, mandragola, torpedine, aconito, scorpione, tarantola, veleno del cane rabbioso, mallo di noce, erba sardonia o erba annua ecc.). L'autore dedica un'ampia parte ai veleni in quanto associava gli effetti del veleno suul corpo umano alla peste studiandone la causa. Alla fine del volume un breve trattato (65 pagine) sulla febbre che colpì le basse campagne bresciane nel 1649, loro descrizione e cura. Opera collazionata e completa. Bella legatura in piena pergamena seicentesca con titolo manoscritto al dorso. Esemplare in mediocri condizioni ma raro, solo cinque copie censite su SBN delle quali una mutila. Copertina in piena pergamena seicentesca con titolo manoscritto al dorso in discrete condizioni generali con usure e parti mancanti ai margini e dorso. Segni di umidità. Legatura in buone condizioni. All'interno le pagine si presentano in discrete condizioni con fioriture e gore d'umidità marginali che hanno causato fragilità della carta al margine superiore con perdita di qualche lettera fino alla carta b e da pag. 277 alla fine. Il testo in sè non risulta tuttavia danneggiato. Very scarce first edition of 1650 of this treaty about plague by the physician from Brescia Girolamo Occhi Rizetti.Rizetti worked during plague affecting the city of Brescia in 1630 which provoqued many victims. Rizetti describes different kind of fevers in particular the austro one (deriving from the wind, because people think the plague was transported by wind), the cause of plague of 1630, different kind of poison (arsenic, sandaraca, sea hare, salamander poison, viper and aspis poison, dipsadi, frog, Cantharis poison, opium, mandrake, torpedo, monk's hood, scorpio, tarantula, raged dog poison, nut, sardonia herb or blister buttercup etc.). The author dedicates a wide part to poisons because he associated the effects of poison in human body studying the cause of plague. At the end of the volume a brief treaty about fevers (65 pages) which affected lower countryard of Brescia in 1649, their description and treatment. Collationed complete work. Beauitufl full parchment cover of the XVII century with manuscripted title in the spine. Copy in poor conditions but complete, only five copies in italian libraries of which one with missing pages. Full parchment cover of the XVII century with manuscripted title in the spine in fair general conditions with wearings and missing parts in the edges and spine. Humidity signs. Binding in good conditions. Inside pages are in fair conditions with foxings and humidity stains in the edges causing weaknesses of paper in the upper edge with loss of some letter until page b and from pag. 277 until the end. The text in itself is not damaged.

      Willem Blaeu, Amsterdam - Beautiful map of southern Spain in original color with gold highlights, circa 1650. Shows Andalusia with Seville, Cordoba and the Strait of Gibraltar. Decorative features include ornate cartouches with cherubs and architectural elements, a compass rose, ships and two coats of arms. Minor overall aging and offsetting, full original margins. Willem Blaeu (1571-1638) was a prolific Dutch mapmaker who started one of the most famous map publishing firms of the 17th century. It was at this time that the Dutch controlled the map trade, and their ornate and beautiful maps had immense popularity. Rebound in early 19th century sheep with corners and marbled paper over boards; spine desiccated; separation beginning at the front hinge; textblock is sunken in the middle so that the central signatures are pushing out towards the fore-edge (images available); the textblock was tightly trimmed at the time of rebinding and there is occasional mild loss of text, usually just the shoulder notes suffer, but on a few occasions the text itself; still quite readable as any loss is minimal; text is toned throughout; names and early doodling on the verso of the title page; previous owner name on the front pastedown; endpapers show evidence of moisture exposure but there are no distinct tidelines in the textblock; while this copy has some challenges, it remains an extraordinarily scarce book; digital images can be made available upon request. (1584-1648), grande storico spagnolo, fu ambasciatore presso la Santa Sede; proprio tale lunga ed apprezzata carriera diplomatica si pone alla base di questa raccolta di massime politiche (a ciascuna delle quali corrisponde un emblema) che gli garantirono notevole fama. L'opera si colloca dottrinalmente sulla scia della fortunata letteratura politica sulla ragion di Stato che ebbe inizio alla fine del Cinquecento e si protrasse fino agli anni Quaranta del Seicento.       First and only edition of this sumptuously illustrated work, a singular source for the documentation of several of the most elaborate large-scale globes, inventions used to make celestial and terrestrial maps, and astronomical mechanisms, some now lost, constructed during the latter decades of the seventeenth century.<br/><br/> Coronelli (1650-1718) was the greatest maker of terrestrial globes and maps during the last half of the seventeenth century and the founder of the Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti, the first geographical society. He published some 140 works in his lifetime, the first at the age of 16. Probably born in Venice, he earned his doctorate in theology at Rome in 1674, excelling in the study of astronomy and Euclid. A little before 1678 he began working as a geographer and was commissioned to make a set of globes for the Duke of Parma, each of which was 1.8 metres in diameter. They so impressed Cardinal D'Estrees, ambassador to Rome and advisor to Louis XIV, that he invited Coronelli to Paris in 1681 to construct a pair of terrestrial and celestial globes for the King. The present volume is particularly noteworthy for the information Coronelli includes on these massive and highly decorative globes which took him two years to construct. These extremely ornate works, one of which is illustrated here, were 3.9 metres in diameter, and weighed two tons, and remained until the 1920s the largest globes in the world. They stood on a marble base of five steps and were held by a system of four meridian-rings and a massive horizon-ring supported by eight pillars, all in bronze. Each had a wooden frame covered with glued layers of plaster and fabric and an outer surface of very fine linen on which the information on the globe was painted and lacquered. These globes established Cornelli's fame, and also his fortune as his globes became an essential feature of the great houses and libraries of Europe. <br/><br/> Among other noteworthy descriptions and illustrations in the present work are those of Treffler's <i>Sphaericum Automatum</i>, a self-moving celestial globe, now lost. It was for sale for the price of 8000 Talari in 1688 at the time Coronelli was passing through Augsburg, and his description of it appears to be the only surviving evidence that it existed. Also noted by Coronelli is Weigel's <i>Globus Pancosmus</i>, which had a circumference of 9.5 metres with interior effects such as a breeze which could be made to blow from any desired quarter, various elements such as rain, hail and thunder and images of people of different nationalities. <br/><br/> The work contains 4 large fold-out celestial maps in circular format engraved in a spectacular baroque style. These celestial maps are especially noteworthy because they were based upon the most recent astronomical observations and were copied into the eighteenth century. Also included are two large terrestrial maps - the western and eastern hemispheres. First Latin Quarto Edition (Guibert, pp. 158-159).First Latin Quarto Edition of Descartes' Important Work on the Workings of the Body and Soul Including Significant Contributions on Ethics and Psychology. The first Latin editions were published by Elzivier in 1650 in both 12mo and quarto formats - most likely simultaneously although the 12mo version is typically given priority. This Latin translation of the original French edition of Les passions de l'ame (1649) was done by Samuel and Henri des Marets. An English translation was also published in the same year. The Latin edition of Descartes' last work, Les passions de l'ame (1649), was written in Egmond-Binnen, his last Dutch residence, for Queen Christina of Sweden, and first published in the original French the previous year. It discusses psychology, ethics and the relationship between mind and body; Descartes believed that the soul was a definite entity giving rise to senses, thoughts, feelings, affections and acts of volition and he was one of the first to regard the brain as an organ which integrated the function of mind and body. Such beliefs had a powerful influence on the thinking of men like Robert Hooke, Giovanni Borelli, Jan Swammerdam and Thomas Willis, and, at a time when scientific research was expanding rapidly, Descartes' theories helped to explain the more puzzling problems of human physiology (see: Heirs of Hippocrates, no. 291). "Finally, he brought physiological psychology within the compass of his system in 'Les passions de l'aime' in 1649. This system aimed to be as complete as Aristotle's, which it was designed to replace. It was not by chance that it dealt in the same order with many of the same phenomena (such as the rainbow), as well as with others more recently investigated (such as magnetism)." (DSB). "D'apres les tables de Lansberg, pour le méridien de Bologne. Dans la part I de la publication, il y a un catalogue d'étoiles, réduites à 1630" (Houzeau/L.). - Edges, corners and spine-ends rubbed and bumped; hinges beginning to split. Sumptuous giltstamped éventail-style binding: double borders of a narrow zig-zagging design and a wider rosette-and-flower-design within floral braces and double fillets enclose a large central compartment, the corners of which are occupied by round-headed pointillé fans emanating from tendril corner stamps. The same éventail stamps form an elaborate central rosette with tendril stamps at top and bottom ends. The empty space in between in filled in by intricate tendril and dentelle blindstamping. The various elements of the design are starkly set off by empty quarter-inch fillet borders enclosing the corner éventails with quadrants and the central rosette with a lozenge; the tendril infilling is structured by the same blank borders forming a cross, thus dividing the cover into four richly tooled, mirroring quarters. The spine is framed by the same zigzag and floral borders as the covers, enclosing a narrow blank border and a finely tooled dentelle and semi-rosette design echoing the cover infilling. - Title page bears 1772 ms. note of ownership by the Capuchin monk Giovanni da Cento, who introduced the volume to his monastery's library in Cento (Emilia-Romagna). Later in the library of the Swedish collector Thore Virgin (1886-1957) with his repeated signature (dated Stockholm, 16 May 1914) and his bookplate (dated 1911) and collection stamp ("Bibliotheca Qvarnforsiana").         Unheard-of Curiosities: Concerning the Talismanical Sculpture of the Persians; The Horoscope of the Patriarkes; And the Reading of the Stars

      London : Humphrey Moseley, 1650 1st English edition of this extremely rare early work on the Cabala. Jacques Gaffarel first published the work in 1629 in France where it was extremely popular - Edmund Chilmead produced the first english version in 1650. The preface to the edition states &#39;This Curious Booke was printed Thrice, with the space of Sixe Moneths: Twice in Paris; and Once, in some other City of France not named in the Impression. And it is suspected, and upon very good Grounds too, that the Booke-sellers of Rouen, in hope of Gaine, printed it more than Once; though not without very great Corruption, both of the Sense and Stile.&#39; The book caused considerable controversy, but Gaffarel became librarian to Cardinal Richelieu and had his protection. This copy lacks the 2 charts of the heavens but is otherwise complete and newly and expertly rebound in full leather. With Chilmead&#39;s preface, title page, dedication to Edward Bysshe, letter to My Lord Bishop of Nantes, the Author&#39;s Additions, and Advertisement to the Reader, Table of Chapters and Contents, and text with a number of small engravings. The book has many signatures of previous owners across the title page, preface and end of the book. It has also been much annotated in pencil, particularly towards the end. The paper is very soft and has had some damp spots. It has had a number of paper repairs and added backing to some pages and particularly page edges to give some protection. There is no loss of text.
