BACON (Francis).
A Paris, chez Guillaume Loyson et Jean-Baptiste Loyson, 1647. in-8. Titre gravé. 15ff. 508pp. [Attributes: First Edition]

JCB II, p. 360; not in JFB Catalogue; Sabin 99443; European Americana 647/28: "Though conventionally described as a Latin version of the Ingolstadt, 1622, German translation of Pedro Gobeo de Victoria's Naufragio y peregrinatio, 1st publ., Seville, 1610, Harold Janz points out that this is in fact a novel for which Gobeo's account was 'merely ... raw material'.". VESLING, Johann
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Johann Vesling was a 17th-century German anatomist and surgeon who was primarily remembered for his medical textbook, 'Syntagama Anatomicum', which was a collection of lessons and essays on tissue dissection. This book was one of the earliest systematic discussions on the human lymphatic system. While living in Egypt and Palestine, Vesling developed many of his views on anatomy and eventually published these studies in 1641. That first edition did not include any illustrations; however, subsequent editions such as this 1647 edition, feature 25 impressive full-page plates of human anatomy and surgical procedures. ben Israel, Manasseh
Amsterdam: NP, 5470. Hardcover. g+ to fine. Small octavo. 7.5x5". [5] 201pp. [4]. Rebound in modern dark brown leather boards, with blind-stamped tooling on the covers. Gilt lettering and ruling on the spine. In four parts, each with its own title page. The initial title page is illustrated by detailed woodcuts of biblical scenes (including the giving of the torah) and decorative motifs. There are four additional title pages throughout the text (separating parts) each framed by decorative woodblock motifs and including a vignette of a winged face. The originally dedication pages from the first edition are reproduced here, with the final part having its own dedication section, dated "5407" [1647]. The work, compiled, written and originally published by famed Rabbi and printer Menasseh ben Israel is a compendium and comprehensive guide of Jewish holidays, practices and observances throughout the year, organized into five parts. Originally dating from 1645-1647, the book was produced, as stated by the author, "for the use of our Portuguese Nation", and was specifically geared towards the Jewish education of the newly established Sephardic (specifically Portuguese) diaspora community. A significant portion of the Sephardic community in Amsterdam would have been ex-marranos/conversos (Jews, who had outwardly converted to Catholicism during the inquisition in Spain, who then immigrated and were able to reestablished their Jewish identity, aka former "New Christians"), and thus were unable to read Hebrew, hence the text's publication in Portuguese. Topics range widely … [Click Below for Full Description]

BACON, Francis
1647. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly." ― Francis Bacon Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion. An extremely rare Elzevier printing of Bacon's "History and Reign of Henry VII". According to Willems, these Hackium publications were printed from the house of Elzevier. In this book, Bacon provides a detailed account of the life of Henry VII, however, not just from a historical perspective, but also providing a sense of the character of the king. From Bacon himself: "He was careful and liberal to obtain good intelligence from all parts abroad... Towards his Queen he was nothing uxorious; nor scarce indulgent; but companiable and respective, and without jealousy. Towards his children he was full of paternal affection, careful of their education, aspiring to their high advancement" (Craik) However, because of his attitude and often lackadaisical temperament, he was thought of as an incompetent leader unable to overcome serious difficulties. Francis Bacon creates one of the best biographical sketches of the late-15th-century English monarch. [Attributes: First Edition]

HOBBES, Thomas
"The condition of man . . . is a condition of war of everyone against everyone" - Thomas Hobbes, De Cive In 1647, there were multiple editions of Thomas Hobbes's "Elementa Philsophica de Cive" published. It also happened to the same year as the first printing, but this, the third edition, includes the same engraved title that includes three allegorical figures. These figures correspond to the major divisions of the work - liberty, empire, and religion. Editions beyond the first are considered the best executed printings. Willems describes a third printing collation, which meets the present volume. [Attributes: First Edition]

He is best known for his identification of the genuine letters of church father Ignatius and for his chronology of the worldÕs creation stating that man was created in 4004 b.c. in one of his last published works, Annalium pars posterior (1654); despite the fact that his chronology is not taken seriously today, Annalium gained the most international recognition of all his writings. CIVIL WAR IN WALES.
[London?], Printed in the Yeare 1647. Small 4to. Disbound, pp. [2], 6, a little toned, but very clean and crisp. Very rare sle printing. In the summer of 1647 (one exisiting copy is known to be dated by hand July 1st) the war (which in the end killed a higher proportion of the British population than the First World War) had dragged on for almost five years and Parliament was gaining the upper hand, mainly by installing the County Committees, staffed by loyal men. These functionaries collected the taxes Parliament needed, rounded up horses and supplies for the army, and carried out any other commands Parliament sent out. This and the growing power of the army (and taxation for its maintenance) led to support for the Royalist cause and Charles I. This call to arms specifies the grievances against the Parliamentarian committees and denounces their brutality. The people rising up were not so much in favour of the king, but his rule was considered less unpleasant and burdensome than Parliament. And indeed in this pamphlet there is no Royalist propaganda or 'hail to the king' at all. It is an almost anarchist denounciation of arbitrary power in itself, its arrogance and aloofness. ESTC R201640, recording copies in the BL, National Library of Wales, Cardiff Central Library, the Bodleian and at Folger Shakespeare Library.

Johann Vesling (1598-1649) was a German scholar of botany and medicine, who became professor of anatomy and surgery at the University of Padua in 1632. ‘Syntagma anatomicum’ was an extremely successful textbook favouring practical knowledge ‘which dissection offers to eyes and hands’ over mere theoretical questions. Vesling guides the reader through a textual cum visual dissection head to foot, proceeding according to the body parts an anatomist would encounter from the moment of the first incision, beginning with skin and body fat. As he proceeds, he examines bones underlying the soft parts which are being dissected and the complexities of the nervous system, the vessels that take blood to the brain (‘circle of Willis’) and the lymphatic system—these being among the earliest and most thorough medical descriptions of these anatomical structures. ~The copperplate illustrations were 'intended for the commonest nee … [Click Below for Full Description]

May was a lawyer, dramatist, poet, historian and classical scholar. A supporter of Parliament, he was named its secretary and commissioned to write the History of the Parliament.
