Estienne, Charles et Jean Liebaut.
Rouen: Jean Berthelin, 1647. Derniere edition ([16] introduction, advertissement, table; 674; [20] table des matieres; [20] L’usage de la Iauge); first published in Latin 1554 and in French 1591, translated and augmented by Liebaut (or ‘Liebault’). Surflet’s English translation first appeared in 1600 (See our book no.1104 for the second Englished edition). Quarto (23cm x 18cm), in modern half leather over marbled paper, gilt title to spine; marbled endpapers, red lettered title page; illustrated throughout with a number of woodcuts showing lay-outs, stills, etc.; final section on measurement (l’usage de la Iauge) with figures in text. An early country handbook and encyclopaedia which, if it could not bring science fully to bear on farming and country life, at least sought to bring reason and order. An important foundation book on agriculture and health (also distilleries). Considering the popularity of the book ( French editions ran until the early 18th century), it appears surprisingly scarce. A clean, presentable copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

AELIANOS, Claudios || SCHEFFERUS, Johannes (Ed.)
Strassburg, Friederici Spoor, 1647. 8:o. Graverat titelblad,+ (14),+ 384, 359-397,+ (120) s. Maskhål i marginalen. Denne levde på 2:a århundradet e. Grekisk-latinsk parallelltext.

NAPLES].
[Lisbon], [colophon] por D.[omingos] Lopes Roza, 1647?. 4°, later plain grey wrappers (minor soiling), old manuscript title on front cover, text-block edges rouged. Caption title. Four-line woodcut initial. A bit rubbed on final page. In very good condition. Engraved bookplate of Victor d'Avila Perez. (6 ll.). *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this rare account of a 1647 rebellion in Naples led by Masaniello (Tommaso Aniello), a fisherman, against the rule of Philip IV of Spain. The rebellion briefly created an independent Neapolitan republic, which lasted only until 1648 but remains a celebrated moment in the history of Naples. Not surprisingly, few if any accounts of this rebellion were printed in Spanish dominions. This one appeared in Portugal, which had declared its independence of Spanish rule in 1640 and was still at war with Spain. The relevance of all this for the Portuguese war of independence is summed up on f. A4v.This Relaçam begins with a recap of the history of Naples and Sicily under French and Spanish rule (including the Sicilian Vespers), briefly describes the recent rebellion in Sicily (ff. A1v-A2r), then moves on to a detailed account of the rebellion in Naples (ff. A2r-A4v). The central characters are Masaniello and the viceroy of Naples, Rodrigo Ponce de León, fourth Duke of Arcos, but the names and actions of many others are also included. On ff. A4v-A6v is the full text of the agreement between the viceroy and the people of Naples, dated Naples July 12, 1647. In it the viceroy grants Neapolitans limited self-government, promises restrictions on taxes, an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Recent period-style quarter calf over cloth, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, endpapers renewed, title page re-hinged. Title page printed in red and black, woodcut head-pieces and decorated initials. Toning, light browning in a few places, light soiling to title page. Chipping to edges of preliminaries and first six pages with minor loss to head-lines, lower corner lacking from leaf B3 with some loss to catch-word. Small later owner initials to title page, interior otherwise clean. An appealing copy. * First edition. The work by an anonymous author describes the practice of the courts, the forms of writs and an explanation of law terms as they existed during the reign of Edward I. It was John Selden who first called the attention of the public to this ancient treatise, and was instrumental in procuring its publication. While Bracton earns the highest praise as the father of legal learning, Fleta earns a share of it for the illustrations he offered to some of the obscurities found in Bracton. [Click Below for Full Description]

Boehme, at the robust age of 37 in 1612, wrote his first treatise Aurora, oder Die Morgenroete in Aufgang. In 1613, an unauthorized copy of the manuscript was copied and circulated by Karl von Ender. Its reception "raised him out of his homely sphere, and made him the centre of a local circle of liberal thinkers, considerably above him in station and culture." However, the local pastor primarius of Gorlitz, Gregorius Richter, leveled a charge of heresy. The local muncipal council administered an admonishment to no further "meddle in such matters." This charge Boehme [publicly] followed for 5 years. In 1618 Boehme again started writing expository & polemical treatises. The majority of his works were written, though not formally published, from 1619 - 1624. A second major work, Der Weg zu Christo, was published in 1624, and signaled a renewal of clerical hostility.
