Lilly, William.
Pr. by Theo. Brudenell for John Partridge & Humph. Blunden, 1647. First edition: the most important work from the famed English astrologer, and in its time the most influential such treatise => printed in English rather than Latin. Lilly (1602-81), whose prediction of the King's defeat at the Battle of Naseby made his name as a professional fortuneteller, became deeply involved in politics, only to see his influence wane after the Restoration; at one point, he was accused of involvement in setting the Great Fire of London, which he had predicted a number of years before. His writings -- which included a series of almanacs issued under the banner of "the English Merlin" -- lived on, and have in modern times regained much of their former authority in the field of horary astrology. In addition to => a full, detailed guide to Lilly's astrological practices and school of thought, the work at hand provides a "Catalogue of most Astrological Authors now extant, where Printed, and in what year": an extensive => bibliography of astrology texts still of use to scholars today. The third book has a separate title-page (noting publication in 1658 by John Macok, but with pagination and signatures continuing uninterrupted from the first two books), and the text is illustrated with => numerous diagrams and sample star charts throughout. Even a quick browse here uncovers points of interest beyond the astrological. This thick book lays before us a full array of the common as well as the cosmic reasons people consulted astrologers in the 17th century: How to tell if a woman be "honest" … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stefano della BELLA (Firenze 1610 - 1664)
Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1647. Bibliografia: De Vesme-Massar 89, III/III. Etching and engraving, 1647 approx. Example in the third state of three, with publisher Vincent's address on lower part. Excellent work, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmed to platemark, small signs of glue on verso, in general in good condition. On the background, added in the second state, we can see the ossuary of Les Innocents Cemetery in Paris, under whose arches the representation of the Dance of Death took place. This event might have been Della Bella's source of inspiration.

Al-Suyuti, Abd al-Rahman ibn Abu Bakr.
Paris, Sebastian & Gabriel Cramoisy, 1647. 8vo. (24), 179, (17) pp. Contemporary full vellum with handwritten title label to spine (faded). First Latin translation of this three-part pharmacological treatise on the nature and effect of medicines gained from animals, vegetables, and minerals (including some quite superstitious material), published under the name of the mediaval Egyptian polymath Abd al-Rahman Al-Suyuti, whose "versatility stands out as unique in the history of Arabic literature" (GAL II, 144), but probably assembled from various Arabic sources. The first part, covering animals, is likely Al-Suyuti's own "Diwan al-Hayawan", translated by Abraham Ecchellensis after a manuscript in Cardinal Mazarin's library; the authors and manuscript sources of the following two parts remain unidentified. Within the notes, this edition uses several Greek, Hebrew, and even Arabic interspersions in the type. - Some browning to paper. 18th century French note on lower flyleaf; handwritten duplicate note and stamp to title-page. Insignificant paper flaws to pp. 103-106, merely affecting the pagination; small edge tear in p. 151f.; loss to lower margin of last leaf but one of the index (not touching text). - Krivatsy 11586. Choulant 389. Wellcome II, 2. Ebert I, 9151. Krüger, Bibliographia botanica 35. Catalogue of the Library of the Medical and Chirurgical Society of London 145.

Stefano della BELLA (Firenze 1610 - 1664)
Acquaforte, 1647 circa, firmata in basso al centro "Ste. Dla Bella inv. et fe. Cum Pri. Reg.". [Click Below for Full Description]

The work by an anonymous author describes the practice of the courts, the forms of writs and an explanation of law terms as they existed during the reign of Edward I. Selden brought this ancient treatise to the public's attention and was instrumental in its publication. While Bracton earns the highest praise as the father of legal learning, Fleta earns a share of it for the illustrations he offered to some of the obscurities found in Bracton. Giovanni Francesco GRIMALDI detto il "Bolognese" (Bologna 1606 - Roma 1680)
Acquaforte, circa 1647/50, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. "Etchings, about 1647/50, signed on plate at the bottom left. Only state. Magnificent proof, rich tone, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""paschal lamb in double circle"" (Heawood 2838), with thin margins, low oxidation, otherwise in excellent condition. Known as the Bolognese, Grimaldi was probably born in this city around 1606 and, in fact, the production of recent years was strongly influenced by his first contacts with the tradition of the Carracci. Mattei PORRONI
Rarissima edizione. Vanitas, Lob der Mageren, Neu-Latein und deutsch, mit Musik-Noten - Balde, Jakob:
München, Straub für Wagner, 1647. circa 13,5 x 8,4 cm., 2 Bll., 176 SS., mit Kupfertitel, 1 ganzseiten Kupferstich und 4 Seiten gestochene Noten. Neuerer Pergamentband VD17 23:000585F. Seltene erste deutsche Ausgabe der lateinisch 1638 erschienenen Sammlung humoristischer Gedichte und Lieder zum Lob der Dünnen von dem neulateinischen Dichter Jakob Balde (1604-1668). Hier mit einer neuen deutschsprachigen Einleitung von ihm, sowie mehreren zusätzlichen Texten, Übersetzungen und makkaronischen Gedichten in einem deutsch-lateinischen Gemisch. Bemerkenswert sind die gestochenen Notenseiten mit Totenköpfen in den Ecken - das erste Lied beginnt: "Helft singen ihr verbainte leuth all die im dürren orden..." Das makabre Frontispiz zeigt einen Toten, der aus dem Grabe wieder aufersteht und umgeben ist von Schädeln, aus denen Pflanzen wachsen. Die Kupfertafel (von W. Kilian) mit einer sehr originellen Abwandlung des klassischen Hieronymus im Gehäus: ein dürrer alter Mann in einer Schreibstube mit einem kleinen Löwen begrüsst einen dicken Gast mit den Worten: "Du seye gleichwohl feist und dickh, Bleich sein und mager, ist mein glückh". - Etwas gebräunt, wenig fleckig, Titel angerändert, ein Blatt mit Einriss ohne Verlust. CAUSSIN Nicolas;
