Merian reproduced Ferrari's plates, reversing them in the printing process, and sometimes adding butterflies or other features or combining figures from more than one illustration ... Other illustrations ... were drawn from the work of Caspar Bauhin. The large ... engravings ... are entirely new.' (Lucia Tongiorgi Tomasi). Hunt notes that "most copies seem to have variations in the plates so that it is impossible to describe an 'ideal' copy" (vol.I,p.255); but the present copy appears to contain the maximum possible number of plates: one more than any copy listed as havi … [Click Below for Full Description]

BONTEKOE, Cornelis.
Three rare editions in one volume, two by Cartesian physicians on medicine and pharmacology, the third on practical chemistry, also with medical applications:Ad 1: First edition of a general introduction to medicine and pharmacology by the Dutch Cartesian physician Cornelis Bontekoe (1647-1685). It reflects the modern scientific method that had made Bontekoe a controversial figure, beginning with matters of chemistry before moving on to medicines derived from minerals, animals and plants, then discussing various ailments. Part 2 comprises a 58-page pharmacopoeia.Ad 2: First edition of a Latin adaptation of a Dutch handbook of practical medicine by the Dutch Cartesian physician, chemist, pharmacologist and entomologist Steven Blankaart (1650-1704). It discusses a wide variety of ailments and their treatment, giving recipes for medicines. Blankaart was an early user of Van Leeuwenhoek's new microscopes, and the blood vessels shown in one of the plates may have been based on microscopic views. Ad 3: Rare third edition of a Latin treatise on practical chemistry by Giovanni Francesco Vigani (ca. 1650-1712) from Verona, who apparently had no university education but was to become professor of Chemistry at Cambridge in 1703.With an early owner's name at the head of the title-page struck through and another written below it by the medical writer Jacob(us) l'Hommart (1666/67-post 1702). All three works somewhat browned, but otherwise in good condition, ad 2 with a small marginal tear in 1 leaf and the foot of the margin of the outer 2 bifolia of its last quire cut 1 to 6 mm short. Amsterdam - Hugues Picart + Jean Boisseau, 1647
Tchemerzine, II, 782 ; A.J. Guibert, 46-48 ; Brunet, II, 610. [Click Below for Full Description]

COMENIUS, Johannes Amos.
Bibliography of the Works of J. A. Comenius: www.lib.cas.cz/kvo/bibliografie-komensky/index-en.html (3 copies); WorldCat (2 of the same 3 copies); this ed. not in Picarta; STCN; cf. ESTC R224086 ("1647" [=1657] English ed.). Fourth known copy of the first edition of Hendrik Schoof's Latin and Dutch adaptation of Comenius's Janua linguarum, an extremely influential version, aimed at a broader public, that served as the basis for the "1647" [=1657] Latin and English edition. No copy is known in any Dutch library. This revolutionary method for learning Latin contained 1000 sentences that attempted to present the basic Latin vocabulary in the context of its use, rather than teaching rules of grammar and memorizing lists of words. Schoof's Latin and Dutch edition is based on this revised version of the simplified text. Instead of 1000 numbered sentences it contains 500 numbered groups of related words, usually opening with the most general word, followed by more specific words. Schoof's present edition served as the model for Joseph Brookbank's Latin and English edition, published in 1657 ("1647"on title-page). Since the book was intended for beginners, often people with relatively little education, most editions were small and inexpensive and have become extremely rare. With two owner's inscriptions on title-page and a Latin poem(?) on an end leaf. With minor soiling and foxing, but still in good condition. The binding is soiled and rubbed, but remains structurally sound. An important and extremely rare Comenius edition intended for a popular audience.

Panoramic view of Leiden - Jacob Salomonsz Savary after Claude Rivet, 1650
1647. ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PANORAMIC VIEWS OF LEIDEN EVER MADE. "Lugdunum Batavorum Hollandiae Celeberrimum Et Academia Florentissima". Copper engraving made in 1647 by Jacob Salomonsz Savary (1617-1666) after a drawing of Claude Rivet of 1640, on 4 mounted sheets, with the title in woodcut. Below, 18 columns on 6 sheets with the description of the "widely famous city of Leiden" in Latin, Dutch and French. Published by Claes Jansz. Visscher in 1650. Original handcolouring with later additions. Size: 59 x 212 cm. (Frame: 83 x 240 cm) When Joan Blaeu published his townbook at the end of the Eighty Years' War, this panoramic view of Leiden from the south was made, on four large sheets. In the lower left corner the engraving is dedicated to the governors of the city and university of around 1646. Two reading putti and the goddess of wisdom Pallas (in auricular style), decorate the cartouche. The names of the main buildings are mentioned directly in the view. At the top left we see the coat of arms of Holland with the lion, at the top right there’s the coat of arms of Leiden with the keys. The embellishment of the print was beautifully made and shows the clothes of the time. The architecture is depicted accurately, except for a few details, such as the top of the southern transept of the Hooglandse Kerk, which is represented with onion-shaped forms. The rightmost (fourth) sheet of the engraving is important, because it shows us the situation on the east side of the city (between Nieuwe Rijn and Oude Rijn) after 1644 and before the last extension of 1659. Also one gets a goo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leo Belgicus - Francisco Corbelletti/Famiano Strada, 1647
LEO BELGICUS Copper engraving published by Francisco Corbelletti in Rome in 1647 as part of Famiano Strada s De Bello Belgico [Of the War in the Low Countries]. Coloured by a later hand. Size. 31 x 22,1 cm. The Dutch lion is a household name. The animal symbolizes the strength and courage of the Low Countries. The lion plays an important role in football in our present time, but the depiction of the Netherlands as a lion was introduced in difficult times, at the end of the 16th century, when the Netherlands were fighting the Eighty Years' War for independence against the Spaniards. From 1583 onwards, a number of maps with the Netherlands in the form of a lion came on the market. The lion map not only functioned as a useful map, but was often hung on the wall as a statement. It was an expression of active citizenship, of pride, of self-awareness and often served as a spectacular piece in the house of a merchant or government building. Gallia Belgica was the northern part of Gaul between the Seine and the Rhine in Roman times. As a Latin name, Belgica later became synonymous with the Seventeen Provinces and the Low Countries. This lion map is attributed to Johan Willem Bau(e)r (1607-1640) or Jan Miele (1599-1664), both were involved with engraving for Famiano Strada s book on the Eigthy Years' War. Aesop.
1647. London: printed by F.B. for Andrew Hebb, at the signe of the Bell in St. Pauls Church-Yard, 1647. Slim small 8vo, [2], 182, [8] pp., with signatures H and J transposed (i.e. bound out of order). Later (c. 1820) calf, more recently rebacked. Bookplate of Francis Freeling. Internally good, title-page and first and last leaf stained, occasional minor soiling, small worm trail in the top margin of the last few leaves. § A truly rare book, with a distinguished provenance. The book is printed in black letter and a previous owner (perhaps Freeling) has noted at the front in ink "I consider this to be a book of very great rarity. It is said to be Caxton's translation tho not a faithful represnt [sic]". The last recorded copy sold was the Moncure Biddle copy in 1952. No other copies currently recorded anywhere, though the 1647 edition is in Lowndes, the Britwell handlist, and NCBEL. BL, Bodleian, Harvard, Yale, UCLA. PML recently added a copy not noted in ESTC. Die Karte enthält Teile des heutigen North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine und Nova Scotia. [Click Below for Full Description]
