Philippe Chifflet; Thomas a Kempis Saint
Antwerp: Ex officina Plantiniana Balthasaris Moreti, 1647. 12mo. [24], 439, [14] pp, engraved title. Handsomely bound by Magnin in fine brown Moroccan, gilt, raised bands, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Light rubbing. Inscription on first blank. Half title and engraved title soiled, occasional spotting. The Imitation of Christ is a Christian devotional book. It is a handbook for spiritual life arising from the Devotio Moderna movement. Aside from the Bible, no religious work has been widely read or translated more than the Imitation of Christ. The text is divided into four books, which provide detailed spiritual instructions: "Helpful Counsels of the Spiritual Life", "Directives for the Interior Life", "On Interior Consolation" and "On the Blessed Sacrament". The approach taken in the Imitation is characterized by its emphasis on the interior life and withdrawal from the world, as opposed to an active imitation of Christ by other friars. The book places a high level of emphasis on the devotion to the Eucharist as key element of spiritual life. Very Good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

PUGET DE LA SERRE Jean.
The Miror which flatters not, London). [Click Below for Full Description]

BLAEU, W
Amsterdam, 1647. No Binding. Fine. 14 ¾ x 19 ½ inches. Fine original color; fine condition. A pristine example of Blaeu's splendid map of this vital area of South America that contains the mouths of two great rivers-the Amazon and the Orinoco. The map extends from the Gulf of Paria in Venezuela in the north and includes in this area the islands of Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada and Margarita. Its southern limit is Sao Luis in northeastern Brazil, and it encompasses the entire mouth of the Amazon. Also on the map are Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, and it also depicts the Guiana Highlands. A prominent feature on the map is the legendary Lake Parime, the object of searches by many explorers, not least among them Sir Walter Raleigh and Alexander von Humboldt. It was believed that on its shores would be found the city of Manoa, otherwise known as El Dorado.

DONNE, John
London:: John Dawson,, [1647].. First Edition. 4to, pp. [xviii], 218. Bound in contemporary full calf with the initial blank, rebacked and rubbed along the hinges, front hinge tender, some staining to the title-page, a very good copy of the first issue. Keynes 48; Wing D1859. The earliest of Donne's controversial writings. Donne was famously of a neurotic temperament and frankly admits his fascination for the act of suicide in his Preface '...whensoever any affliction assailes me, mee thinks I have the keyes of my prison in mine owne hand, and no remedy presentes it selfe so soone to my heart, as mine own sword.' He was nonetheless reluctant to publish his doubts about the absolute sinfulness of suicide and only circulated the Biathanatos among friends in manuscript. He sent a copy to Sir Edward Herbert, and, in 1619, another to Sir Robert Karre, writing: 'It was written by me many years since; and because it is upon a misinterpretable subject, I have always gone so near suppressing it, nor many eyes to read it: onely to some particular friends in both Universities, then when I writ it, I did communicate it: And I remember, I had this answer, That certainly, there was a false thread in it, but not easily found: Keep it, I pray, with the same jealousie; let any that your discretion admits to the sight of it, know the date of it; and that it is a Book written by Jack Donne, and not by D. Donne: Reserve it for me, if I live, and if I die, I only forbid it the Presse, and the Fire: publish it not, but burn it not; and between those, do what you will with it' … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bellissima prova, impressa su carta vergata coeva priva di filigrana, rifilata al rame, leggere tracce di colla al verso, nel complesso in ottimo stato di conservazione. Etching and engraving, 1647 approx. Example in the third state of three, with publisher Vincent?s address on lower part. SWEERT, Emanuel
[Frankfurt or Amsterdam, 1647. Copper engravings, with expert modern hand-colouring. A fine highly decorative pair of 17th-century tulip portraits from Sweert's 'Florilegium'The Dutch florist Emanuel Sweert produced his 'Florilegium' at the behest of the Emperor Rudolf II of Austria. Six editions were published in Frankfurt (1) or Amsterdam (5) between 1612 and about 1647. The present pair of Tulip prints are amongst the most beautiful of the images produced for the 'Florilegium': the flowers of 24 varieties are shown with brief explanatory text beneath each one, all beautifully arranged in ranks that echo the patterned precision with which they were grown by 17th-century gardeners.Tulips today are highly appreciated for the joyful range of colours and the elegant shapes they present in early spring. At the time when the present images were printed, Tulips were the main horticultural obsession. Their growing was essentially a pastime for the rich and powerful. The search for new varieties (particularly the bi-colour or 'broken' varieties) reached its zenith in Amsterdam in the 1620s and 1630s with a sort of 'dot-com' speculation and investment frenzy when individual bulbs fetched more than a medium-sized house.Cf. GASSENDI, Pierre
Woodcut printer's device on title & one engraved plate with a port. of Epicurus. 4 leaves, 5-236, [18] pp. 4to, cont. French sheep (head & foot of spine neatly repaired, several signatures lightly browned), single gilt fillet round sides, spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Lyons: G. Barbier, 1647. First edition of an important book; this life of Epicurus, which emphasized his philosophy of physics, was the foundation of Gassendi's Epicurean atomism. His atomic theory was applied to chemistry by Boyle and adopted by Newton in his new mechanical philosophy. "Before Galileo and Descartes had succeeded in combining mathematics with mechanics, the chief refuge of hard-headed opponents of scholastic verbalism and Renaissance Platonism was the tradition of Greek atomism...Its chief representative during the period of Cartesian domination was Gassendi, who stands both as the climax of Epicurean atomism of the Renaissance in its accommodation to a mathematical science of nature, and as the first of the explorers of the implications of that science for the traditional empirical philosophy of knowledge. Gassendi is thus with Hobbes one of the fathers of 'scientific' empiricism...Gassendi indeed fancied himself the creator of the great rival scientific system to that of Descartes, the system founded on sound experience. History has reserved that distinction for Hobbes; yet it probable that Gassendi contributed far more to the actual advance of scientific ideas than his more consistent and gifted British fellow-worker."J.H. Joints and headcaps neatly restored, some rubbing in places, corners just worn at tips, small stain at head through to sig. G2, a few minor blemishes, a very good copy. First edition. The third and last of the three great collections of Jacobean drama was published long after the deaths of Beaumont and Fletcher, in 1616 and 1625 respectively, but still echoing the format of the folios of their contemporaries Jonson and Shakespeare. The volume contains 34 plays and a masque. Not all the plays are by Beaumont and Fletcher: Beaumont alone wrote The Knight and the masque, several are collaborations between Fletcher and Philip Massinger, and some attributions remain conjectural. Wishart's account of the campaign of the Marquess of Montrose, fighting in Scotland for the royalist cause in the years 1644-1646 is a glowing account of heroic loyalty. The book paints its picture at the expense of other royalist figures and Charles I would order it supressed for this reason. While initially successful Montrose would eventually be defeated and in 1650 he was executed with a copy of Wishart's book hung around his neck. , 8vo , [xxiv] 248 & [8] 192 pp .
