Opera Chirurgica
[Click Below for Full Description]

¶ Dupin n°844.

La PEYERE, Isaac de], 1594-1676.
A aris. Chez Augustin Courbe, dans la petite Salle du Palais, a la Palme. 1647.. 1647. Book 8vo. 16.5x 11cm, [xiv],272,[4]p. title page in facsimile, lacks map and frontis plates, bound in contemporary full vellum, incomplete copy of a rare book (cgc) T.P.L. 6322. Alden, Lande 1278, Rich, Sabin. cf. T.P.L. no. 21 for the first english translation; 1850. It is included in Recueil de Voiages au Nord, by J.F. Bernard. q.v. and a new English translation was printed in the Hakluyt Society's Publications no. 18. 1855. This relation, generally regarded as material on Greenland, is rather more an account of regions further west. It is written in the form of a letter to Monsieur de La Mothe le Vayez containing accounts of voyages by Frobisher, Hudson, and Munck. La Peyere secured his material in Demark while a member of the French ambassador's staff, 1644-45, but his work contains many inaccuracies. Captain Johan Munck, an early explorer of the north-west portion of Hudson Bay, is mentioned on the map in this edition. (Wanting in this copy). The unnumbered pages at the beginning of the book are an advertisement describing the map. .

[WATERCOLOUR - BOTANICAL]. HEROLT, Johanna Helena.
Reitsma, Maria Sibylla Merian & dochters, ill. 110 (p. 147; a nearly identical drawing of the same wallflower specimen with 1 butterfly); Wettengl, Maria Sibylla Merian 1647-1717, kunstenares en natuuronderzoekster, no. 120 (ill. 44 on p. 85; a similar watercolour including the same wallflower specimen, with no insects). Characteristic original watercolour botanical drawing by Johanna Helena Herolt (1668-post 1721), the eldest daughter of Maria Sibylla Merian and Johann Andreas Graff. It shows a wallflower (Cheiranthus cheiri) and double hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis) with two inchworm moths (Geometriae) in the air, two inchworms and two pupae. She probably drew it in Amsterdam around 1700. Though she still remains in the shadow of her mother, she was a fine flower and insect artist in her own right and there is growing appreciation of her work. Her watercolours, more baroque than her mother's and often with brighter colours, radiate vigour and vivacity: the flowers, painted with intensity in every detail, really come to life. Reitsma, p. 135, notes that the prices for the flower watercolours increased with the number of insects, so the present watercolour must have been unusually expensive. Most of Herolt's work is numbered and the present watercolour is numbered "145"[?] on the back. The published catalogues rarely note the numbers, but we understand the highest number known is 164.Characteristic watercolour in fine state of preservation, with certificate of authenticity from Dr. S. Segal, Amsterdam. Herolt herself may have revised the upper part of the hyacinth.

1647. 4to. (10), 648 [but: 598], (4) pp. Contemp. half calf with giltstamped spine. Rare first edition of "the oldest complete translation of the Qur'an into a European vernacular" (Encylopedia of the Qur'an). Du Ryer's work served as the basis for further translations of the Qur'an into English, German, Dutch, and Russian, and was instrumental in introducing Europeans to the tenets of the Muslim faith. Du Ryer was a celebrated linguist and had lived in Egypt and Turkey, where he studied classical Arabic. His introduction briefly summarizes the Muslim religion for Christian readers, noting customs such as Ramadan, circumcision, the practice of having up to four wives, the significance of Mecca and Medina, Sufi brotherhoods and wandering ascetics, and finally the Islamic recognition of Jesus as a prophet but not the son of God. A prayer printed in Arabic is included on the verso of leaf e2. - "Du Ryer's translation of the Qur'an [...] became an unparalleled literary success [...] The easy availability of the Qur'an accompanied a newfound interest in the Orient; additionally, du Ryer's translation lacked the polemical tone of previous editions, an orientation which arose mainly in ecclesiastical contexts. Du Ryer used Islamic commentaries such as al-Bayawi'sAnwar al-tanzil, the Tafsir al-Jalalayan by al-Mahalli (d. 864/1459) and al-Suyu i (d. 911/1505), or an excerpt from al-Razi's (d. 606/1210) great commentary made by l-Raghi l-Tunisi (d. 715/1315) entitled al-Tanwir fi l-tafsir, quite casually in his translation, merely noting them in the margins. Vignon, Claude after
Francois Langlois, il Ciartres, 1647. Very good overall. An engraved portrait of the fifteenth century conqueror Timur (Turkic word for "Iron").Timur (1336 - 1405), known as "Timur the lame" or Tamerlane, was a conqueror whose successful military campaigns across Eurasia made him the most powerful leader of the Muslim world, second only to Alexander in terms of conquests. From Samarkand, his capital, his conquests included Iraq, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Mesopotamia, Georgia, India, Syria, and Turkey. His territory stretched from the Mediterranean to Mongolia, from India to Russia. He was on his way to conquer Ming China in 1404, when he died during a brutally cold winter. The portrait depicts Timur with a long mustache, bust length, turned to the right, wearing a hat of fur and cloth decorated with a feather and a brooch with pendant pearls. He wears a cloak fastened on his left shoulder with a brooch shaped like a flower. The portrait was engraved after one by Claude Vignon (1593 - 1670), a French painter noted for his distinctive style and unusually expressive portraits.Engraved by Jerome David, after Claude Vignon, plate 9 from a series of 36. 'C. V. inventor', top left and with publication line: 'F. L. D. Ciartres excud. Cum Privilegio' at top right, and the title centered over the portrait, "Magnus Tamerlanes". Watermarked laid paper.7 1/2 x 9", trimmed close.

Colbert de Lostelneau
Paris: Estienne Migon, 1647. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition, 1647. Small folio, bound in early 20th C. half vellum, marbled boards, red and dark green leather gilt spine labels, pp. (12), 459, collated complete with 48 engraved plates, with text and battle formation charts, using red and black dots in various configurations, with some folding plates printed in three or four colors, with in-text wood engravings. Generally very good, light wear and soil to binding, tide mark from old dampstain to bottom margin, coming into preliminary pages and noticable up to p. 5, after which it almost totally disappears, affecting only minimally the first plate and no other plates after that. The plates are bright and very nice, and the battalion formations have a distinctly modernist feel to them. Very rare.
