VIETE
François Viète, the greatest French mathematician of the sixteenth century. Vieta became a key figure in its development and his influence can be seen on Descartes, on Harriot, and even on Newton and Leibniz. All his books were published privately at his own expense for distribution to his friends and are therefore notably rare. DSB 14, pp. 18-25 ; P.M.M., 103. ***First edition, printed in Mexico City, of one of the rarest and the mos … [Click Below for Full Description]

LUCRETIUS - LUCRECE - LUCREZIO - NARDI (Giovanni)
Florence, Amato Massa, 1647. Early illustrated work on Egyptian funeral customs, mummies and art of embalming. "The poem's medical authority lasted in Italy until well into the seventeenth century, when one published commentator on the DRN was in fact a physician, the Florentine Giovanni Nardi. His Paraphrastica explanatio of 1647, an ambitious work ignored, or worse, by later Lucretian exegetes, examines the text from the point of view of content rather than form; and in his own scientific treatises Nardi not infrequently resorts to Lucretian quotations in the course of scientific demonstrations' (Cambridge Companion to Lucretius, pages 217-218).

STENGEL GEORG.
Haenlin & Wagner, 1647. In 16° (160x95); pagg. (16), 636, (52).

Amsterdam, Janssonius, 1647. 12mo (13 : 6.5 cm). (16, including engraved title), 540, (16) and (4 blank) p. A tiny early note on rear pastedown reading ?Mai: 11 lig. 5. den:? suggests that the book was purchased at eleven maiores (of whatever currency), and that the binding (ligatura) did cost five denarii. As Hungary was the only country where denarii were still struck throughout the 17th century, the binding seems to have been executed there. The volume remained in the region. There are two subsequent ownership inscriptions from Kronstadt (Brasso in Transylvania) on title-page: the superior judge Johann Jakob Mylius (died in 1832) and the preacher Johann Friedrich Hiemesch (1793-1869). - The text is a classic first published in four books in 1633, a fifth was added from 1642 onwards and a sixth around 1653. The present edition has no letterpress title and the dedication year is misprinted 1663 for 1643. The preliminaries match the copy digitized by the Bavarian State Library. - Vellum dust soiled, free front endpaper glued to pastedown, internally fresh. Contemporary, probably Hungarian vellum binding with blind-stamped fillets and blue edges gauffered in gilt with a star pattern. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Giovanni Francesco GRIMALDI detto il "Bolognese" (Bologna 1606 - Roma 1680)
1647. Acquaforte, circa 1647/50, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra.
Ogni scena, incisa in rame all'acquaforte, misura mm 154x120 circa, più ampi margini bianchi (mm. 320x215 i fogli). The barrel of the tankard is engraved with a continuous scene which skillfully combines at least two different images which are after lost works by Titian. The Titian - derived images: The clothing of the poor and part of the feeding scene, which straddle the tankard's handle are found with the same Latin inscription, in a 1647 Paduan publication by Mathias Bolzetta de Cadorinis, VII opera misericordiae piis animis dicat. Rare Signature of Richard Lovelace. Extremely rare example of the signature of cavalier poet Richard Lovelace (1617-1657) - the only known privately owned example of his hand. Save for his "To Althea, from Prison", of which contemporary manuscript copies are known, Lovelace's work achieved limited popularity in his time and there is a corresponding derth of manuscript material in his hand. Only one complete manuscript in Lovelace's hand - a petition to the House of Commons - is known to exist. His signature appears on a series of 13 documents, of which this is one, relating to land transactions in Kent. CELM LoR 63. Rutherford [Rutherfurd], Samuel
London. 1st Edition. Very Good. FIRST EDITION (1647) IN CONTEMPORARY BINDING OF AN IMPORTANT WORK IN THE THEOLOGY OF SAMUEL RUTHERFORD. Rutherford's Christ Dying and Drawing Sinners to Himselfe was published in 1647, the last year he served in the London Assembly. "In th[o]se four years he participated fully in the Assembly's debates over church government and published a number of major works … Rutherford's main responsibility in London was to advance the presbyterian cause … In England, he earned a place in one of Milton's sonnets as a prime defender of Scottish presbyterianism (DNB)." "Rutherford's writings during the London years provide a significant commentary of the theology of the Westminster Confession and Catechisms. In Christ Dying and Drawing Sinners to Himselfe Rutherford elaborately scrutinizes the Antinomian notion that the law has no obligation for the Christian" (Dictionary of Scottish Church History and Theology). For Rutherford and the Puritans, "the stress [was] upon the individual's experience of faith. Later in Christ Dying, Rutherford seems to make just this point" (Guy M. Richard, in The Supremacy of God in the Theology of Samuel Rutherford). First edition, with handwritten ownership details of William Bernard Sears, master wood carver, on rear endpapers. London: printed by J[ohn]. D[awson]. for Andrew Crooke at the Green-Dragon in Pauls Church-yard, 1647. Small quarto (144x185mm), contemporary full calf. [38] 1-598 + errata. Owner signature on title. (MACHINES, EARLY HISTORY OF). HERO OF ALEXANDRIA
Bologna: Carlo Zenero, 1647. Second Edition in Italian n. Following the first edition of 1589, this is the second (and only obtainable early) edition in Italian of one of the most popular books on ancient technology of the Renaissance, highlighted with fascinating woodcuts of inventions that include the first steam-powered engine. "Pneumatics," as this book is commonly known, is the work of the first century Greek mathematician Hero (or Heron) of Alexandria, who here provides detailed instructions for building machines and practical scientific instruments to demonstrate his ideas. As Brittanica observes, the work "describes a menagerie of mechanical devices, or "toys": singing birds, puppets, coin-operated machines, a fire engine, a water organ, and his most famous invention, the aeolipile . . . . This last device consists of a sphere mounted on a boiler by an axial shaft with two canted nozzles that produce a rotary motion as steam escapes." Like other Greek classics, "Pneumatics" arrived in Europe in the 15th century via Constantinople the only major city of the ancient world to survive to the Middle Ages without being conquered and sacked. Its libraries, with their holdings of ancient GReek manuscripts, avoided the fate of other institutions in Alexandria and elsewhere. Hero's works were among those brought to Italy by the great Greek scholar Cardinal Basilios Bessarion (1403-72), who donated his substantial library to the Republic of Venice, the most stable Italian city-state, where it became the foundation of the Library of Saint Mark's. Aldus Manutius began printing G … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAAR, Johann Jacob.
Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 308; Tiele, Bibl. 952. Second edition of Johann Saar's extensive account of his travels in the Dutch East Indies, the Moluccas and Ceylon. After living in Batam, Batavia and the Moluccas in the service of the Dutch East Indian army, Saar moved to Ceylon in 1647 and most of the descriptions refer to that country. The book was first published in 1662. Besides Saar's own account, the publisher included several contemporary accounts by Andersen, Iverson, Nieuhof, Mandelslo and others, to give Saar's account more credibility. The illustrations underline the diversity of the narrative, and depict besides some beautiful views of Ceylon, pearl fishery, elephant hunting, and a view of Middelburg (Zealand). Owner's stamp on back of portrait, severely browned (as usual), some leaves with faint waterstains, not affecting the text, otherwise in good condition.

Geree, John.
Pr. by A.M. for Christopher Meredith, 1647. First edition of this defense of Geree's Vindiciæ pædo-baptismi (published in 1646), itself a reply to both Infant Baptism God's Ordinance by Michael Harrison and Two Treatises and an Appendix to Them Concerning Infant-Baptisme by John Tombes. Geree, a Church of England clergyman, may be best remembered for his summary of Puritan philosophy, The Character of an Old English Puritan -- the publication of which was another result of the voluminous controversy with Tombes over infant baptism. Uncommon: OCLC, ESTC, Wing, and NUC Pre-1956 report only eight U.S. holdings, one of which has been deaccessioned.

Contemporary half tanned leather (extremities worn, corners of boards heavily scuffed), paper shelf label to spine. Internally only very little browned, faded dampstain to gutter of a few leaves. Extensive ink marginalia in a neat early hand throughout. Provenance: D.G.Seidel (signature on title-page); Library of the Count of Solms-Wildenfels (armorial bookplate inscribed "Comes de Solms" to front pastedown). Internally a fine, crisp copy. ---- NLM/Krivatsy 12328; Waller 9931; Osler 4166; Choulant-Frank p.243; Roberts & Tomlinson, p.236-239. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION (after the octavo first edition of 1641) with plates by Giovanni Georgi. Remarkably, the first edition was not illustrated, reflecting the reality that it was still possible to sell books on anatomy at this time without reference to images. Notably, the copperplates in this first illustrated edition bear little or no relationship to the powerfully influential woodcuts of Vesalius' Fabrica. In spite of its aesthetic limitations, Vesling's book found a ready market, and was reissued numerous times and translated into the main European languages including English. The plates were "intended for the commonest needs but are mostly original engravings and represent some organs of the human body more correctly than their predecessors. They were very popular at the tim … [Click Below for Full Description]

Brehme, Christian).
Dresden, Gimel Bergen Erben, 1647. - Erste vollständige Ausgabe, vorher auszugsweise 1637 in 'Allerhandt lustige, trawrige . Gedichte' erschienen. [Click Below for Full Description]
