> Piantanida, 3436 e segg., cita solo edizioni succes … [Click Below for Full Description]

JANSSONIUS, J.:
1647 1647 - Samtidigt håndkoloreret kobberstik. Amsterdam 1647. 45,3 x 55,8 cm. Makholm 27.

FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION (after the octavo first edition of 1641) with plates by Giovanni Georgi. Remarkably, the first edition was not illustrated, reflecting the reality that it was still possible to sell books on anatomy at this time without reference to images. Notably, the copperplates in this first illustrated edition bear little or no relationship to the powerfully influential woodcuts of Vesalius' Fabrica. In spite of its aesthetic limitations, Vesling's book found a ready market, and was reissued numerous times and translated into the main European languages including English. John Owen - Cambro-Britanni Oxoniensis
Amsterdam: Elzevier, 1647. 18mo (9,6 x 5,2 cm). (4), 212 pp. Full calf, covers with gilt filets, board edges with gilt-decorated elements, spine with 3 gilt fleurons, green morocco gilt-lettered label and 3 raised bands. With engraved title page and engraved portrait as frontispiece. John Owen [c.1560 - 1622] was a Welsh Latin poet. He was a headmaster of Henry VIII's school at Warwick for some years but then moved to London and became a professional poet. Altogether, he published 10 books of epigrams. His epigrams became almost overnight very popular throughout Europe. Dutch and German publishers were the first to gather the different books together into a single, unified publication. Because of his perfect mastery of the Latin language, his epigrams earned him an enduring reputation as the "British Martial", after the Roman poet Marcus Valerius Martialis. This is an interesting and unique copy. There are probably at least four editions of this 1647-Elzevier-edition. Willems states that there are three and our copy is certainly not mentioned by him. This edition also not in the Elsevier Heritage Collection. This is the third of the four Louis Elzevier-1647-editions that are mentioned by the STCN; curiously however, the portrait in our copy is not mentioned there by the STCN, as is also conform the collation-formula of that copy. The engraved title page, unsigned and as frontispiece an engraved portrait of Owen, also unsigned. With a headpiece and an endpiece. Fine antiquarian condition. HEROLT, Johanna Helena.
, . . Cf. Reitsma, Maria Sibylla Merian & dochters, ill. 110 (p. 147); Wettengl, Maria Sibylla Merian 1647-1717, kunstenares en natuuronderzoekster, no. 120 (ill. 44 on p. 85). Characteristic original watercolour botanical drawing by Johanna Helena Herolt (1668-1728), the eldest daughter of Maria Sibylla Merian and Johann Andreas Graff. It shows a wallflower (Cheiranthus cheiri) and double hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis) with two inchworm moths (Geometriae) in the air, two inchworms and two pupae. She probably drew it in Amsterdam around 1700. Though she still remains in the shadow of her mother, she was a fine flower and insect artist in her own right and there is growing appreciation of her work. Her watercolours, more baroque than her mother's and often with brighter colours, radiate vigour and vivacity: the flowers, painted with intensity in every detail, really come to life. Reitsma, p. 135, notes that the prices for the flower watercolours increased with the number of insects, so the present watercolour must have been unusually expensive.Characteristic watercolour in fine state of preservation. Herolt herself may have revised the upper part of the hyacinth.

(1953). D'Ailly noemt als vervaadigingsjaar ca. 1630.
