Giovanni Francesco GRIMALDI detto il "Bolognese"
Acquaforte, circa 1647/50, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Etchings, about 1647/50, signed on plate at the bottom left. Only state. Magnificent proof, rich tone, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark "paschal lamb in double circle" (Heawood 2838), with thin margins, low oxidation, otherwise in excellent condition. Known as the Bolognese, Grimaldi was probably born in this city around 1606 and, in fact, the production of recent years was strongly influenced by his first contacts with the tradition of the Carracci. Grimaldi created over fifty etch … [Click Below for Full Description]

SWEERT, Emanuel.
Florilegium. Amsterdam 1647 - Copper engraving. Later colour. Size: 21 x 33.5 cm. (8½ x 13 inches). In fine condition with good margins. Beautiful engraving of six species of berry. The designs are well balanced on the page and the captions elegantly inscribed. Emanuel Sweert was prefect of the gardens of the Emperor Rudolf II in Prague. His Florilegium was first printed in Frankfurt by Kempner in 1612 -1614. It was originally a sales catalogue for plants and bulbs from Sweert's gardens, to be sold at fairs in Frankfurt and Amsterdam, but now these very attractive engravings are regarded as fine examples of 17th century botanical illustration and are much collected. Engraved by JANSSON, Jan.

In 1593 he was admitted to the Society of Antiquaries. He also wrote a dialogue for the society concerning the coin of the kingdom and existing prices. Spelman resettled in London, in 1612, and completed his treatise 'De non temerandis Ecclesiis', which was written about his uncle Francis Sanders. According to the title, it was written 'to a gentleman who, having an appropriate parsonage, employed the church to prophane uses, and left the parisioners uncertainly provided of Divine service. A conversation between Spelman and Sanders resulted in the writing of the treatise. It was intended only for private circulation, but was printed in London in 1613. A reissue came in 1616. Spelman also took interest in the colonies in America, and became a member of the council for New England shortly after its foundation in 1620. He took a prominent part in the control of the company from this period up to the resignation of their charter in 1635.
