LA CALPRENEDE (Gauthier de Costes de).
12 vols. in-8. [Click Below for Full Description]

GASSENDI, Pierre
Woodcut printer's device on title & one engraved plate with a port. of Epicurus. 4 leaves, 5-236, [18] pp. 4to, cont. French sheep (head & foot of spine neatly repaired, several signatures lightly browned), single gilt fillet round sides, spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Lyons: G. Barbier, 1647. First edition of an important book; this life of Epicurus, which emphasized his philosophy of physics, was the foundation of Gassendi's Epicurean atomism. His atomic theory was applied to chemistry by Boyle and adopted by Newton in his new mechanical philosophy. "Before Galileo and Descartes had succeeded in combining mathematics with mechanics, the chief refuge of hard-headed opponents of scholastic verbalism and Renaissance Platonism was the tradition of Greek atomism...Its chief representative during the period of Cartesian domination was Gassendi, who stands both as the climax of Epicurean atomism of the Renaissance in its accommodation to a mathematical science of nature, and as the first of the explorers of the implications of that science for the traditional empirical philosophy of knowledge. Gassendi is thus with Hobbes one of the fathers of 'scientific' empiricism...Gassendi indeed fancied himself the creator of the great rival scientific system to that of Descartes, the system founded on sound experience. History has reserved that distinction for Hobbes; yet it probable that Gassendi contributed far more to the actual advance of scientific ideas than his more consistent and gifted British fellow-worker."J.H. LOSTELNEAU.
A Paris, de l'imprimerie d'Estienne Migon, MDCXLVII (1647). in-folio, pp. (12), 459, (1), leg. coeva in p. pelle, dorso a nervi con tit. e fregi oro (restauri alle cerniere). Precede l'opera dedica a Luigi XIV. Ottimo esempl. (nota di possesso al tit. ''Paulus Boursier Taurinensis'') Olschki, Choix I, 108. Brunet III, 1178. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Beaumont, Francis and John Fletcher (Gentlemen)
Humphrey Robinson, London, 1647 - First collected edition. 1 volume complete. Lacks portrait frontispiece of Fletcher. Folio in fours. Title page backed. Pp. [i-lii], 1-75 [76], 1-143 [144], 1-165 [166-168], 1-71 [72], 1-172, 1-92, 1-50 [i.e. 52], 1-28, 25-48 , with the usual occasional mispagination: few marginalia not affecting the text and some brown foxing spots but not affecting the readability of the text. The first few and final pages have a brown spot at the top margins but not reaching the text. This is the last of the three great published collections of Jacobean drama. The work contains 34 plays and a masque., All pages are in order confirmed by the catchwords though page numbers as occasionally misnumbered. Bound in later full calf with raised bands and compartments with red and black leather labels with gilt titles and with blind borders. "The 1647 folio has attracted significant attention from scholars and bibliographers, and various specialised studies of the folio (books on the book) have been written. As with Shakespeare's First Folio, the typesetting of individual compositors and the work of individual printers has been traced and analysed – including that of Susan Islip, one of the rare instances of a female printer in the 17th century." Willing to help 'mend his Native Country, lamentably tattered, both in the upper-Leather and sole, with all the honest stitches he can take. And as willing never to bee paid for his work by Old English wonted to pay. It is his trade to patch all the year long, gratis. Therefore I pray Gentlemen keep your purses. London. Printed by J.D. & R.I. for Stephen Bowtell, at the signe of the Bible in Pope’s Head Alley. 1647. This is the first edition of Nathaniel Ward's remarkable and early book. Ward was a Puritan clergyman, author most notably of The Body of Liberties, which was the first code of laws written for the colonies. The Simple Cobler was written a few years later and was published in Englan under the pseudonym Thomas de la Guard. Bound with leather spine and corners, marbled papers over boards. A nineteenth century binding. Gold lettering on the spine in the English manner (bottom to top). There are notes and underlined passages and pointing hands drawn in the margins on a great many pages - done quite a long time ago, but I cannot tell if the marginalia is seventeenth century or eighteenth century or even nineteenth century. Endpapers are more recent. The book has undergone a very expert restoration including the following: new endpapers, repair to bottom corner of the t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johannes JANSSONIUS
Rarissima edizione. The atlas includes re-issues of Barentsz's 10 maps (first included in "Caertboeck vande Middelandtsche Zee", 1595) of the Mediterranean, with Jansson having completely changed the title and reworked the decorative embellishments, removing many of the great images originally added by Barentsz. "This celebrated encyclopedic work, by far the most thorough and complete up to date, easily surpasses Bacci, Marbod, and Leonardus in quantity and quality of information; it is further distinguished by its intimate knowledge of the art of the lapidary and must therefore be regarded as the first treatise to offer more than the briefest of views of gem cutting.
