- First edition of the complete works of the 'Father of German Surgery'. Fabry was the first to advocate amputations above the gangrenous of injured parts. He is accredited with the first amputation of the thigh and was the first to remove a gallstone from a living patient. Fabry described a procedure for the treatment of fracture-dislocations of the cervical spine. He had considerable mechanical ingenuity and deviced many pieces of apparatus and instruments. - M.A. Severino (1580-1656) of Naples, was a famous anatomist and surgeon. He introduced a mixture of ice and snow for freezing to produce surgical anaesthesia, and perform a number of tracheotomies during an epedemic of diphtheria. - Heirs of Hippocrates 247; Krivatsy 3842; Parkinson & Lumb 798; Waller 2908 + 8888; Wellcome III, p.4.

In Padoa, Paolo Frambotto, 1646. Legatura strettamente coeva in piena pergamena semirigida con titoli manoscritti al dorso. Bell'esemplare, genuino e marginoso. STC XVII Century, 261. Michel-Michel, II, 130. Cat. Hoepli, 649. Cfr. Predari, p. 136.         Afbeeldinge der voornaemste gezichten van Duinrel gediestig opgedragen door zyn hoog-edels onderdanigen dienaer.[Amsterdam], Pieter Schenk, [ca. 1720]. Oblong royal 4to (ca. 23×28.5 cm). With engraved title/dedication and 16 numbered engraved views (15×18.5 cm). Modern half sheepskin parchment.

The Anglo-Dutch Garden 76; Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) XXV, p. 228, 1234-1258; Springer Bibl. Overzicht, pp. 43-44. A complete set of 16 numbered views of the magnificent buildings, gardens and woods of Cornelis de Jonge van Ellemeet's "Duinrel" estate, built on the edge of the dunes near Wassenaar. Like the other great Dutch estates of the 17th century, it included gardens, fountains, mazes, etc., but it is distinguished from the others by its extensive woods and uncultivated land, and its location at the edge of the sand dunes near the coast. This silvan flavour is also reflected in the emphasis on the Greco-Roman goddess Diana in the decoration, and the present series of engravings includes the Diana pavilion. When Ellemeet (1646-1721), Procurer General for the Dutch Republic, bought the estate in 1680, much of it was still wild land and dunes, and in the next two decades he turned it into the lavish wooded estate shown in the present prints. While some great estates of the day appeared in many different print series over the years or have even survived to the present day, the various views by Schenk are nearly the only surviving images of Duinrel. In very good condition, with large margins and only an occasional very minor spot. A fine and historically important series of prints of the Duinrel estate.

With: (2) FLAMSTEED, John. An abstract of a letter from Mr. J. Flamsteed, ... giving an account of the eclipses of [Jupiter]s satellits, anno 1686; and containing a table of the parallaxes of [Jupiter]s orb, and an ephemeris of [Jupiter]s geocentric places for the same year. [London, 1685]. From Philosophical Transactions , vol. 15, pp. 1215-1230. (3) FLAMSTEED, John. An abstract of a letter from Mr J. Flamsteed. ... giving the description & uses of an instrument for finding the distances of [Jupiter]s satellits from his Axis, with the help of the table of parallaxes and catalogue of eclipses; printed in the preceding Transactions. [London, 1685]. From Philosophical Transactions , vol. 15, pp. 1262-1265. With an engraved astronomical instrument for calculating the positions of Jupiter's moons. 3 parts. 4to. Disbound.

www.adsabs.harvard.edu (under Flamsteed and Flamsteedio); for Flamsteed's life: DSB V, pp. 22-26. Three astronomical articles (2 in the form of letters) by England's first Royal Astronomer, John Flamsteed (1646-1719) at the Greenwich Observatory from its establishment in 1675, published in the Philosophical Transactions of the British Royal Society in the years 1683 and 1685. The first article gives observations of a 1682 lunar eclipse by Flamsteed himself, Edmund Halley and a certain Haynes. The second gives Flamsteed's calculations of the eclipses of Jupiter's four moons for the coming year 1686, intended in part as an aid to the determination of longitude. The third gives an engraved dial with four scales around its perimeter, with Flamsteed's description of its use to calculate the positions of Jupiter's moons.. Flamsteed's magnum opus, his great star catalogue and charts, appeared posthumously in 1725 and 1729, so his most important publications during his own lifetime were a single book in 1680 and a dozen short astronomical articles in the years 1672 to 1686, three of them present here. The articles and plate have been disbound, but they are otherwise in very good condition, with only some minor spots in the text and a couple tears (one repaired). Three of Flamsteed's rare non-posthumous astronomical publications, with an engraved plate of his calculating dial.
