Boxer in the Introduction to the facsimile edition). As well as the East Indies, there is much material on the Straits of Magellan (since several of the voyages came from the east), and descriptions of a number of significant early visits to the Philippines, China and Japan, India, Mauritius, etc. Among them are the Arctic discoveries of Heemskerk and Barentsz, the East-India voyages of Houtman, de Keyzer and Van Spilbergen, the circumnavigations by Van Noort, Le Maire, Schouten and Van Spilbergen.         Lancastria Palatinatus Anglis Lancaster et Lancashire

Amsterdam 1646 - Willem Janzoon Blaeu (1571-1638) 'Lancastria Palatinatus Anglis Lancaster et Lancashire' from "Le Théatre du Monde ou Nouvel Atlas” published in Amsterdam, 1646. Copper plate engraving with original hand coloring. Paper size:24"x19 1/2". Condition: Generally good with some minor aging along margins. A beautiful map Lancashire, England showing towns, villages, fortifications, forests, rivers, churches, abbeys, coastal features, and much more. Decorative title cartouche with blank shield, and three family crests, one of which is also blank. A decorative scale of miles is at bottom right. Original hand coloring, Dutch text on verso. Willem Janzoon Blaeu (1571-1638) was the founding father of the single most important cartographic publishing company in the Netherlands for nearly one hundred years. Blaeu’s firm was based in Amsterdam, the center of European cartography at the time. Blaeu was also the hydographic expert for the famous East India Company and the chief cartographer of the United Republic of the Netherlands. Willem, along with his son Johanne, published the first two volumes of "Le Théatre du Monde ou Nouvel Atlas” in 1635 by 1672, however, the atlas had expanded into 12 volumes, the "Geographia Blaviana”, depicting in about 600 maps the entire known world with most up to date cartographic exactness of the time. The Bleau-atlasses, meant for the wealthiest Europeans, were produced using exceptionally high quality standards of engraving, typography, paper and hand-coloring, not to mention being expertly surveyed within the company. The maps are among the most beautiful ever made, embellished in the baroque style with ornamental cartouches and marvelous staffages so that the viewer is struck by the decorative value his eyes see.***If you frame up this item with Arader Galleries you can take a 50% discount off the listed price of this work of art.***

- First edition of the complete works of the 'Father of German Surgery'. Fabry was the first to advocate amputations above the gangrenous of injured parts. He is accredited with the first amputation of the thigh and was the first to remove a gallstone from a living patient. Fabry described a procedure for the treatment of fracture-dislocations of the cervical spine. He had considerable mechanical ingenuity and deviced many pieces of apparatus and instruments. - M.A. Severino (1580-1656) of Naples, was a famous anatomist and surgeon. He introduced a mixture of ice and snow for freezing to produce surgical anaesthesia, and perform a number of tracheotomies during an epedemic of diphtheria. - Heirs of Hippocrates 247; Krivatsy 3842; Parkinson & Lumb 798; Waller 2908 + 8888; Wellcome III, p.4.
