Daniel Featley
London, England: 1645. Extremely RARE First Edition of a famous debate between Daniel Featley, one of the translators of the King James Version Bible, and members of Churches of Christ (soon to morph into "Baptists") in 1600s England. The official title is, THE DIPPERS DIPT. or, THE ANABAPTISTS DUCK'D AND PLUNG'D OVER HEAD AND EARES, at a DISPUTATION IN SOUTHWARK. Daniel Featley was a very learned scholar, but he had grown out of favor with the authorities, and this is his attempt to regain his standing as a staunch defender of the powers that be in government and in the Anglican Church. Consequently, although his separatist-dissenter opponents have the better of him in the debate (in my opinion), he attempts to paint them as extremists in a biting caricature. This is a really important work in the history of early English Protestantism. It touches the following subjects: Baptism -- infants or adults? rebaptism of adults who were "baptized" as infants? sprinkling or immersion? The Church -- high church Protestantism or independent congregations? Book of Common Prayer -- a good substitute for the Bible? Clergy -- valid (and even necessary), or can common people read and understand the Bible for themselves? I bought this book from a dealer in Australia, and I know of no other first edition for sale anywhere in the world. Anyone interested in the history of baptism, independent Churches of Christ, English Baptists, or an early defense of Anglican theology will find this book fascinating. For those interested in antiquarian books -- especially in early English Protestant theolo … [Click Below for Full Description]

[MARITIME HISTORY - PRIVATEERING].
[36] pp. Two dialogues discussing Dutch warships capturing Dunkirk privateers and merchant ships. Dunkirkers, serving the Spanish Navy, were a major threat to Dutch trade and shipping, taking hundreds of ships during the Dutch revolt. The present pamphlet discusses several commanders of warships, including the Zeeland captains Jacob Pense, Gerrit Verhagen, Jan Evertsen de Jonge and Jacob Verhelle, who captured no fewer than 30 Dunkirk ships in just one year. Jan Evertsen de Jonge was the son of the famous admiral Jan Evertsen, who had captured the infamous Duinkerk privateer Jacques Colaert in 1636 and later fought several battles in the first and second Anglo-Dutch war. The pamphlet concludes with a list of captured ships mentioned in the text. It seems to have been written to advocate the fitting out of more warships to protect Dutch (or more particularly Zeeland) trade.Spine damaged, otherwise in very good condition. Ad 1: rare series of engravings of Roman art and architecture after drawings made by the French draughtsman Adam Philippon during his travels in Italy. "Adam Philippon was Jean Le Pautre's teacher, and the present suite was, in part, etched by Le Pautre after his master. It is thus among Le Pautre's earliest work. ... The remains of the present suite was apparently etched by another of Philippon's pupils, Gabriel la Dame ... The number 26 is given by Guilmard as the number of plates for which Le Pautre was responsible, but ... the exact number for which Le Pautre was responsible remains uncertain. ... In 1640 Philippon had been one of a group of artists sent to Rome with Roland Fréart by Louis XIII to try to persuade Nicolas Poussin and other artists to return with them to France. It is probable that the young Le Pautre travelled with him" (BAL). Ad 2: very rare early impression of a series of 6 plates, each with two designs … [Click Below for Full Description]

Relation de la province du Japon.Including: BARRETTO, Francesco. Small 8vo (14.5×9 cm). Contemporary limp sheepskin parchment, later endpapers. [10], 308 pp. Rare first edition of the French translation of an important Jesuit account of the Far East by Antonio Francesco Cardim and an important account of the Malabar region in India by Francesco Barretto. Originally published in Italian, also in 1645, they here published together, translated by François Lahier.Although the title of Cardim's work might suggest it discusses only Japan, it is especially important for its extensive accounts of Thailand and Vietnam, among the earliest we have, and also describes St. Paul's College in Macau, China, the first Western University in the Far East, where Cardim served as rector from 1632 to 1636. It covers the history, religions (notably Buddhism) and customs of the regions. Barretto's account of Malabar "begins with a brief but informative discussion of conditions in Malabar, followed by a review of affairs in the missions to the St. Thomas Christians and to Cochin, Ceylon, Jaffna, Madura, Mannar, the Coromandel coast, and Bengal" (Lach & Van Kley). With some mostly minor and marginal water stains in the last quires, more serious in the last few leaves, leading to some damage and an old restoration in the last leaf with no loss of text. ALPINI, Prosper and Jacob BONTIUS.
De medicina Aegyptiorum, libri quatuor. Et Iacobi Bontii In Indiis archiatri, De medicina Indorum. Editio ultima.Paris, Nicolaus Redelichuysen, 1645. 2 parts in one volume. Small 4to (22.5 x 17.5 cm). Title page printed in red and black; woodcut chapter initial and head-tail pieces, 2 text illustrations and 3 full-page woodcuts. Full vellum, title gilt on spine red label. [11], 150, [25]; 39, [1] ff. Somewhat later edition of the first important work on the history of Egyptian medicine. Alpini (1553-1617) was an Italian physician and botanist who spent three years in Egypt studying botany and hygiene as a companion to the Venetian Consul Giorgio Emo. This work is considered "one of the earliest European studies of non-western medicine. Alpini's work dealt primarily with contemporary (i.e. Arabic) practices observed during his sojourn in Egypt. These included moxibustion - the production of counter-irritation by placing burning or heated material on the skin - which Alpini introduced into European medicine [...] Alpini also mentioned coffee for the first time in this work" (Norman). Jacobus Bontius (Jacques de Bondt, 1592-1631), whose work on Indian medicine is included, was a Dutch physician and botanist. He travelled to Persia and Indonesia to study the botany of the area. He was the first to study cholera on the island of Batavia in 1689, before it was known in Europe, and died on Java. His botanic and medical works were published after his death by Pisonius. He "was probably the first to regard tropical medicine as an independent branch of medical science. He spent the l … [Click Below for Full Description]

"One of the most frequently reprinted works of medical pharmacy was the Thesaurus of ... Mynsicht, an M.D. of Helmstedt who became physician to the duke of Mecklenburg and others ... It purported to reveal to the "sons of doctrine and wisdom" a most secret way of compounding drugs based on his own experience and practice" (Thorndike). Von Mynsincht was the first to describe emetic tartar. At the end of the text is a small treatise concerning the philosopher's stone. Forbes, John
Amsterdam, Lowijs, Elzevier, 1645. (44) 789 (51) p. Contemporary gold-stamped folding Vellum with gilt-edged text-block, Folio (Wanting ties. The largest and most famous work of Scottish presbyterian divine John Forbes (1593-1648). Forbes studied at Heidelberg (under David Pareus) and Sedan and was appointed professor of divinity in King's College, Aberdeen in 1619. Refusing to sign the Solemn League and Covenant he was deprived of his benefice in 1640. Eventually forced into exile he abandoned his native country and embarked for the Netherlands. There he travelled through the different provinces and frequently preached in the Scottish and English churches. He chiefly resided at Amsterdam where he prepared his irenicist magnus opus for the press, the first edition of the work presented here. Forbes' Instructiones comprises sixteen books on major theological subjects which is seen at one of the greatest attemps of the seventeenth century to give a history of dogmas. It earned him the reputation of being one of the greatest theologians of the reformed church.) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

GUYBERT, Philbert
Rouen: Nicolas Loyselet, 1645. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Philbert Guybert was a 17th-century physician who is best known for writing his collection of 'charitable' works. Guybert had a desire to care for the poor and his works were designed to as a self-help book and offered accessible and affordable remedies for illnesses of varying degrees including treating the plague. He also wrote about using wine as a medicine and how to make medicinal wine and jellies. This was important as it helped establish accepted processes for drying ingredients used in powders and pills. Guybert provides lists of common substances and their medicinal properties including vegetables, plant, minerals, and animal - all which Guybert considered to be medicinal in some way. (Perkins, p.122) It was an important book in helping quell the conflicts between Parisian apothecaries and doctors of the time.

Von Wolfgang Endter. 25,0 x 35,0 cm (Darstellung) / 34,5 x 39,4 cm (Blatt). - Oberhalb in der Darstellung betitelt "Dess Heiligen Römischen Reichs Stadt Franckenfurt Contrafait, In der Zeit der Belägerung. Anno M.D.L.II.". -händler in Nürnberg.
